I enjoy all the "in Death" series by J. D. Robb and this is a good one. The futuristic background, while not overplayed, adds to the complex story line and Eve Dallas is a great heroine, although she'd hate that description.

The above quotation, which J.D. Robb utilizes to introduce this novella, effectively captures the essence of the murders which form the basis of this story. INTERLUDE IN DEATH was originally released in an anthology titled OUT OF THIS WORLD, a collection of futuristic stories by four well known women authors. It can be understood as a standalone story, but its brevity does not allow the amount of character development or background information that is available in the full length novels. Thus, my rating reflects those factors and I believe will be shared by listeners familiar with the series' main characters, who undoubtedly will find this more enjoyable than those unfamiliar with the ... IN DEATH series. This story takes place during the spring of 2059, it was published chronologically after BETRAYAL IN DEATH, the twelfth full-length novel in the series.

Eve Dallas is upset - her commanding officer has placed her in a situation that involves three things that she detests; attending social events, public speaking and off-planet travel. He has scheduled her to make a presentation at a seminar during an interplanetary police conference being held at Roarke's spectacular new Olympia resort. Of course, Roarke is delighted, as he views it as a chance to vacation with her and show off the resort, a trip which she undoubtedly would have refused to make if not for the fact that it was an official request which she could not refuse. When they arrive, Roarke has been energized by the space travel while Eve is exhausted by the tension of the trip and her fantasy of the rocket crashing into a stray meteor and her being burned to a crisp by a fire fed by the rocket fuel. Perhaps the only consolation for Eve is that Lt. Peabody, Feeney and Dr. Mira are all at the welcoming reception. Of course, the reader immediately recognizes that the presence of these familiar characters means that this conference will be anything but a restful interlude for Eve and Roarke, and instead will undoubtedly morph into an INTERLUDE IN DEATH.

Eve immediately meets the legendary Commander Douglas R. Skinner, his wife Belle and his adjutant Bryson Hayes. Skinner was wounded during the urban wars and attained the rank of full Commander by the age of 44. He requests a private meeting with Eve at which he makes known his intense dislike of Roarke and insults her with his comments regarding her lack of judgment and the effect it would have on her career. Eve and Roarke are both amazed at his vehemence and his desire to discredit Eve and destroy Roarke, who of course vows to discover the source of Skinner's hatred in order to protect both Eve and her career given the nature of Skinner's reputation and connections.

Soon, a murder occurs and the evidence points to Roarke or someone in his employ. Eve's desire to pursue the investigation is complicated by the fact that the resort is outside her jurisdiction; she soon learns that the police chief of the resort (hired by Roarke) is a strong willed woman with an agenda of her own, Darcia Angelo. Before long (remember this is only a novella), another murder occurs; then Roarke and Eve are almost killed. Eve gradually uncovers the complicated reaons behind Skinner's obsessive behavior, but not in time to keep she and her team safe from a determined killer intent on revenge.

This is an enjoyable fast moving story, although its limited length means there is less character development and a more straightforward plot than in Robb's novels. Nevertheless, the climactic final scenes are as tense and fast moving as in all the full- length stories. In addition, there are two special treats for readers of the series. First, both Roarke and Eve learn previously unknown and interesting details concerning their fathers. (As series readers know, their ability to overcome the terror of their childhoods has strengthened the bond between them.) In fact, as Dr. Mira sagely summarizes one of the lessons for Eve of this episode is "blood doesn't always tell". Second, the conclusion of this story reveals a much more sentimental side to Eve than the reader usually sees. Her complex reactions to the situation are pitch perfect but quite unusual. In conclusion, as Darcia states so aptly, the violence and subsequent investigation were a "hell of a way [for Eve] to stay out of a workshop"; of course, Eve simply hopes that her next vacation will be on her beloved streets of NY.

As usual, Susan Erickson does a superb job as narrator of the story. As a fan of the series who has been gradually attempting to complete the volumes which I have not read, I surprisingly find that I have come to prefer the audio version to the print version. I would therefore suggest that this unabridged CD version is also an easy way for other readers to discover whether they share my enthusiasm for Erickson's narration. The shorter length (only three CDs which total approximately three hours) makes the price very affordable and means a much shorter time commitment than the approximately ten hours of the unabridged novels. In addition, the Brilliance Audio format of very short tracks (average under one minute each but no breaks noticeable to the listener) is incredibly convenient if at times you need to listen in short segments or might be interrupted unexpectedly. Finally, I strongly suggest that new readers interested in the series read (or listen to) at least the first two books in the series (NAKED IN DEATH and GLORY IN DEATH) before sampling the later stories in the series. While I do not believe those are the best entries, they are very good and if not read first the later stories (including this one) contain some potential spoilers regarding Eve's and Roarke's childhoods.

I love this series, can't stop reading them. J D Robb ranks with the best. Very gripping series with strong, exciting chacters, plot twists, emotional highs and lows. Each book leaves me wanting more! This one was shorter, but still filled with everything I've come to expect.

Once again, Robb is amazing. Love every single book she writes, have not been disappointed yet! And the neat part is you can read her books without reading the whole series from the beginning...although I would!

I felt ripped off when I got this book. I also paid more than $2.99. There was no indication that it was only a short story. I also ordered Midnight in Death, which is the same thing! I guess it is buyer beware but for the amount of times I order books from here, I never felt cheated before and this time I definitely did. I will certainly make sure this never happens again!

I am biased, but for all of those J.D. Robb fans, Interlude in Death was just as great a mystery-romance as all the others. I just cannot get enough of Eve, Roarke, Peabody, Mavis, and the rest of the regulars!

Eve Dallas has just come off the case concluded in Betrayal in Death, and she and Roarke are spending a week off-planet at Roarke’s Olympus resort. Unfortunately, it’s not exactly a vacation. An interplanetary police conference is being held at the resort and the NYPSD has required Eve, Peabody, Feeney, Mira and Morris to attend. To further complicate matters, Eve has been tasked with giving a seminar during the conference. Put the social interaction required by a conference together with the teaching situation and add in the space travel required to get to the resort and Eve is at the point of “Just kill me now!”

Only minutes after arriving at the opening reception, the chief aide for retired Commander Douglas Skinner approaches Eve and tells her that Skinner wants to see her at his table. Skinner is an icon of the policing community and the Urban Wars, considered both a hero and a legend, and has great influence in the policing community. With little social foreplay, Skinner regales Eve with his ultra-conservative views on a woman’s place in society. Then he states that he will graciously overlook her sins in that area and arrange for her Captain’s bars if she will set Roarke up to be prosecuted for actions in his past.

If you have followed the series with any regularity, you know exactly how Robb writes Eve’s response, particularly when Skinner threatens to destroy her career if she does not comply. When one of Skinner’s bodyguards tries to force Eve to sit back down, she then, in front of hundreds of law enforcement personnel, levels both the guard and his partner with one blow apiece – and walks away.

Several hours later, the bodyguard is found viciously murdered in a stairwell. Eve and Roarke are quickly cleared of suspicion by the local police, and Eve assumes the role of associate investigator along with the local chief. However, Skinner, during his keynote address to the thousands attending the conference, accuses both Eve and Roarke of conspiracy and murder anyway.

Eve’s investigation gets to the heart of the matter quickly. Skinner’s crusade is based on a decades-old sting that he commanded, a sting that cost the lives of 13 police officers when Skinner’s informant betrayed them. That informant was Roarke’s father. Since Patrick Roarke is long dead, Skinner is convinced the case will not be closed – and justice served – until the son pays for the sins of his father.

Before Robb is finished with this novella, we will laugh out loud at the verbal interchanges that Eve has with both Roarke and Peabody. We will continue to see the emotional and professional growth of both Eve and Roarke that was so evident in the last novel. And we will watch Eve follow the evidence systematically, fact by fact, to an explosive conclusion.

But in the end, this novella will fulfill a role that a full-length novel cannot accomplish well – it will become a morality tale. Before the novella is complete, Robb will march five fathers and five children across the pages. She will portray the devastating effects that the long-ago sins of those fathers have brought down upon those children so many years later.

Then she will, through Eve, Roarke and the murderer, drive home the theme: Although a father may give life to the child and the sins of the father may be visited upon the child, those sins do not make the child what he or she is. That decision is completely up to the child.

I have read several J.D. Robb novels; her ability to draw distinctly different characters makes her stories most engaging. There is always a measure of humor to spice the brew, but this one amused me more than most. I downloaded it on my Kindle at about 9:30 p.m., and finished reading it at 2 a.m. I was having too much fun, despite the body count The verbal interplay between Eve and the police woman in charge of the off-planet resort is pithy and playful. I hope these two bold tough women cross-reference one another again.

Beware of Spoilers!

Eve Dallas has been forced by her commander to go off-planet to a police conference that's being held at Roarke's Olympus resort. And she will also have to be a speaker while she's there. Peabody, Feeney, and Dr. Mira are all in attendance as well.

She quickly meets Commander Skinner, a retired police legend who doesn't think to highly of her. He wastes no time telling her that he believes woman have no place on the force and their job is to procreate and nurture. Then, he has the audacity to ask her to help him bring Roarke down and even dangles captain bars in front of her as incentive. When she decides to cut their conversation short one of his men man-handles her and tries to force her back to Skinner and she fights him off.

So imagine her surprise when the man that she struck is found dead in the stairwell later that night. So now Eve is on a case in a place that she has no jurisdiction, but she is being allowed to help on the case as a courtesy. She must find out who wants Roarke to go down so badly that they will kill innocent people to do it.

I'm not a person that really likes short stories so I wasn't expecting a whole lot going into this one. But I'm happy to report that I did actually enjoy it. The story was condensed, but didn't seem rushed at all. Although I would have enjoyed an extra chapter or two or even if Roberts (Robb) had made it into a full-feature novel.

"You saved me, Eve." He watched her blink in absolute shock. "What you are, what I feel for you, what we are together saved me." He kept his eyes on hers as he kissed her."

The previous books have dealt a lot with Eve's past and this one pokes a little into Roarke's with Skinner's motive for going after him being to get payment for what Roarke's father had done. It makes Roarke look at his past and he even has a dream of his own about when he found his father dead.

This was a quick fun read and any In Death fan will happily eat it up!

From the start, I knew this book was originally part of an anthology from the "Out of this World" series Out of this World. I still say even 88 pages of a JD Robb story is worth the price. In this installment, Eve has been given orders by her Commander to attend an off-planet conference and give a talk on homicide. The conference of course is held at the Olympus Resort, one of Roarke's many properties, and most of the gang from Cop Central are in attendance. Seems the big attraction, one Commander Douglas R. Skinner, a police veteran with a 50-year, spotless record is very interested in Eve, mostly because he wants to take her husband down for all the evil doings he had committed in his former life. When Eve is approached by Commander Skinner, she does what you would expect; she tells him to get lost! So begins the adventure of a settling of scores between the police commander and our favorite lieutenant, going head-to-head to balance the scales of justice. Whether you purchase the book by itself for $2.99 + tax or buy it as part of the "Out of this World" series of stories, it IS worth the money!

Including the two novellas, of which this is one, this is the 14th book in the In Death series. It has Eve and Roarke & much of the usual cast at Roarke's off-planet resort for a police conference.

Eve has an unpleasant run-in with former commander Skinner, a legendary hero from the Urban Wars. He has a serious vendetta against Roarke, and tries first bribery, then threats to get Eve to help him take Roarke down. It culminates in Eve hitting one of the commander's bodyguards, who's later found murdered, with the fairly obvious clues pointing to Roarke.

Unlike in Naked in Death, Roarke's not a suspect, but Eve has to figure out why Skinner is so bent on Roarke's arrest, and whodunit, while trying to avoid stepping on toes, as she's out of her jurisdiction. There's much about vengeance, and gray areas, about how obsession can cloud and warp a mind, and the aforementioned revelations about Roarke's father.

If you haven't read the rest of the series, the characters might not be as clear due to the novella length, but then again, if you haven't read the rest of the series, why not?

This 88-page novella (similar to the earlier "Midnight in Death") was published as a thin paperback to tide diehard Eve Dallas fans over the holidays at the close of 2001. In the story, it's the spring of 2059 when we find Eve and most of her usual NYPD cronies at a conference on "Olympus", a resort planet owned by hubby Roarke. After a couple of chapters of social scene setting, including a bit of a run-in between Dallas and a famous retired Commander (Skinner), a murder in the resort hotel puts Eve (obviously out of her normal jurisdiction, but on property owned by her husband) in an awkward position vis a vis the local authorities, headed up by Chief (Ms.) Darcia Angelo. The victim was one of Skinner's employees, followed soon enough by the death of another of his staffers. Surprisingly, signs point to some sort of vendetta involving Skinner and Roarke, and that's plenty to sustain ten slim chapters of police machinations and suspense. An enjoyable short read for sure!

I have all but three of the books in the series. And since I have read every one of them at least twice, I now have the pleasure of picking and choosing just where and when in Eve Dallas's timeline I want to visit. See the beginning of her relationship with, the oh so beautiful, Roarke, the return to her painful roots in Dallas. Or this one. Out of her comfortable environment, off world via a vehicle of death. In this one she is not the one in charge. Although she is surrounded with the usual sidekicks, who seem to play a smaller role than usual. And she does not find out who really 'did it' until the last couple of chapters. Her past plays a part in this realization. We find out that Dallas and Roarke have yet another, older connection. Didn't see that one, although if I'd sat and thought about it I might have come up with it, probably not though. So all in all, a very satisfying (third) read.

I know this is a short story, but I really felt there were a lot of shortcuts taken here. SPOILER: Why does Eve decide that Skinner is the murderer? Just because she doesn't like him? She just seems to decide with no evidence or reason to think that. I guess we're supposed to forget that there is no foundation when it turns out that she is right. Furthermore, if Belle didn't share her husband's obsession, why did she hate Eve? So many inconsistencies and plot points with no foundation. It ties up too neatly, with not enough connecting materials. It was an interesting story... I wish it had been full novel so it could have gotten the attention and foundation that it deserved.

I bought "Interlude" a month ago with its 80 some pages and its pricing scheme of $2.99 plus $1.99 sourcing fee (I think I would have gone through the roof if I had only bought Interlude and had to pay the $4 plus shipping fee) is a rip off when you are led to believe this is a novel, and then only to find out its nothing more that short story and a poor story at best. I see there are number of reviewers that have been disappointed and feel the same way I do.

I have enjoyed many of Nora's books and I don't like throwing a wet blanket on her writing skill, but still I don't understand why she would release these types of marketing teasers. I do know that I won't be buying them and I'll be giving my real close attention to future releases by the author.

This short Eve Dallas story occurs in the earlier part of the series. The action takes place off planet and some reoccurring characters are introduced in this novella. The action is condensed, and it contains a good dose of the familiar interaction between the various major and minor characters of this fast-paced, futuristic police series.

To Lieutenant Eve Dallas' dismay, she once again finds herself on her husband's posh resort planet where they had spent the last week of their lengthy honeymoon. But this visit to Roarke's domain isn't for pleasure, but business. Police business. Her irritation with her commander at being summoned to a police convention only heightens when she is charged to become a keynote speaker at that same convention. But, even that pesky assignment takes a backseat when she is introduced to a legendary icon in the police world: retired Commander Douglas Skinner. Eve soon discovers that the retired commander has a violent hatred toward her husband, Roarke, with a secret agenda of revenge in mind. Together, Eve and Roarke unravel the commander's plans, but not before multiple deaths throw Eve back into another murder investigation.

For those of you who are avid lovers of J. D. Robb's "In Death" series, this episode is a must! It brings into focus just one more piece of the puzzle of Eve Dallas.

It really is a good book. Though I do have some issues with a few things. Eve's entire team is with her at the conference - Peabody, Feeney, Mira, Morris. I love the characters but it's just a bit too pat. The head of police is a gorgeous female who agrees to let Eve help. Admittedly, they have some issues, but there is just more cohesiveness than I would anticipate. It wasn't terrible though and definitely not enough to skip the book over. It's a definite must read - but I say that about this entire series so I'm sure you're not surprised...

This is a in death novella.... I really recommend reading these in order, since you get to see character growth, clearly in Eve and her affection for Roarke. One interesting dynamic here is the marriage of 2 Alpha personalities.... As I continue in this series, I'm interested in how Robb will let it play out. Peabody's dry humor is also very entertaining.

Another awesome read. The In Death Series is perfect. I have started rereading all the bookks from the beginning of the series and am reading each one in order. If you have the opportunity, do it. If you like JD Robb you'll like this book. My husband got this book for me for christmas and was worried it wasn't the right one because of it's size. I can read the normal books in about 2 nights, and it's nice to change it up a little and have an easy one night read. No worries, you don't lose any of JD's pizazz. Don't let the size fool you. I have the anthology and the novelette. It's nice to have the entire set and to have the novelette when I don't want to bother with the other stories in the anthology. The story of Eve Dallas and Roarke never gets old.

Interlude in Death and Midnight in Death are small paperbacks that were originally part of anthologies written by Nora Roberts along with other authors. Hence, the shortness of the novels. If collecting the series, you will want to also own these.

I have enjoyed J.D. Robb books for years. However, over the past several books the Death Series is becoming predictable. Eve becomes irrated with everything, Roarke forgives her everything and on and on. Strangers in Death is no exception to the predictability. Shake the series up a bit and write something totally unexpected.

Greatly enjoyed one of the first audiobooks I ever purchased. I enjoyed listening to the story. The reader did a good job with changing her voice for the different characters; even the female version of Rourke's Irish lilt was acceptable. The additional element of the supernatural and the ghost is an interesting twist.

This book has only 88 pages but was portrayed as a novel, rather than the novella that it truly is. I returned it unread so as to get my money back. If the store wants to keep their customers happy, they should practice more truth in their book summaries. I was completely disappointed with the store as well as with the author (why collude in such a sham?). Better to pay full price at Borders than to go through the hassle of a return.

Beware: the store is charging you $4.98 for a small book that is marked as $2.98. The price should be for the 2 pack of books with(Midnight In Death)and should be labeled as "MASS MARKET TEASERS". I think its completely irresponsible of the store not to indicate somewhere that this is some MINI book. I paid more than the $2.99 listed on the front of the book. This is not a review of the book - it is a review of the ridiculous 88 page joke I received. Obviously I did not read the description fully enough as this is a tease, not a book - TV Guide is thicker! I love all of the JD Robb books and was looking forward to a good read. I would return BOTH of these 88 page items but I already paid $5.00 shipping, and it would cost me again to return - lesson learned. Don't waste the money as it is NOT the bargain it appears to be.

I am a big fan of JD Robb, I just discovered her while visiting family and they had most of the "Death" series. what they didn't have I have been reading through these the store purchases. I love the way JD keeps the primary characters alive and "living their lives" through each book. JD does a great job keeping the reader up to date with the what, when, why without taking over the entire book with the back story for the characters.

downloaded and read from my public library, I loved this novella! FABULOUS story, lots of true "feels" between the characters, quite emotional, a very solid story line, I'm off to read more of the series!
