I enjoyed Jhonen Vasquez' "I Feel Sick" mini-series, so when I saw the Squee trade-paperback, I picked it up, not knowing what to expect...
Well, I certainly wasn't expecting it to be one of the best Comics I've ever read, but that's just what it was.
The first half of the book is comprised of Squee stories- Squee is a little boy whose parents have no use for him; he is pursued by Aliens & Monsters, pushed around by bullies, and his only friend is the new kid at school....who just happens to be the Son of The Devil...
I had no problem immediately falling in love with little Squee- He's so CUTE! (And who wouldn't identify with the childhood fear of waking up facing the wall.....with your back exposed to potential monster-attack!)
The other half of the book is comprised of short strips from Vasquez' Johnny the Homicidal Maniac comic. The "Meanwhile" strips are worth the purchase price alone. My favorite concerns a man on a first date who finds his stomach-ache turning into unexpected....Diarrhea. The way he attempts to explain this had me laughing for about 10 solid minutes.
This book has made me a Jhonen Vasquez fan for life, and I hope that I can get some other people to give this incredibly gifted creator a try.

This book was my first exposure to the work of Jhonen Vasquez. One of my roommates came home from visiting a friend's house, where he had read through Squee! just once, and proceeded to regale us with about three of the installments. From memory. With gestures and full voice characterization. That's one heck of an impression to create with a single read.
As the other reviews will tell you, Squee! is a spin-off from Jhonen's inaugural effort, Johnny the Homicidal Maniac. The gains of experience show both in the artwork and in the storytelling and pacing. The artistic style has settled down into that polish that comes only with practice. Each mini-story has a concise concept that is tightly plotted, and has a real ending (instead of one of Jhonen's signature "I'm tired of this, here's a wacky* random bit out of nowhere!" wrap-ups so common in the Invader ZIM series). And the ideas the stories revolve around are Jhonen at his creative best--both wildly original and familiar concepts, but presented in that delightfully skewed way that only he can.
The Meanwhiles and other strips, creative breaks from the incessant tedium of drawing Johnny for seven issues, are a very mixed bag. Happy Noodle Boy is just random nonsense and mental effluvia, and Wobbly Headed Bob is elitist and depressing. The various Meanwhiles, though, are (for the most part) as hilarious, and well-executed as the Squee! stories.
The upshot: Squee! is full of both inspired humor and intelligence (and if you're at all interested in Jhonen's work after reading these reviews, it's probably the best introduction).
(*yes, that's right: wacky.)

Literally laughed out loud quite a few times reading this. I'd read Johnny the homicidal maniac online and wanted to read this too, but I couldn't find it. I decided both were worth buying irl. Someone saw the colorful cover and snatched it from my desk to look. They opened the book, went white, immediately closed it, and put it back down. Then they said something like. "Oh, God. Those pictures... is... this book good?" I said yes. "Well, as long as you're enjoying it..."
I am.
I am.

A spin off of Jhonen Vasquez' Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, Squee is non-stop hilarious from beginning to end. First featured in the pages of JtHM, his neighbor Squee has his share of very bad luck. His parents hate him, he has encounters with aliens, he's picked on in school, and he's invited for dinner by another kid named Pepito with horns on his head and has the devil for a father. There's all this and tons more to be had as Vasquez displays the same type of twisted humor that made JtHM so popular. I actually like Squee more than I did JtHM; you can't help but feel sorry for the kid while your laughing like an idiot at his plight. Also included are meanwhiles which include tales involving alien abduction experimentation, big headed vampires, a hilarious take on Tickle Me Elmo, and a tale starring Vasquez in which he gleefully pokes fun at himself.

Ok, so you do have to have a very dark sense of humour to appreciate this book. But you probably do, if you're looking at this review in the first place.
Also, you probably came to Squee after reading Johnny the Homicide Maniac, where Squee was just a very minor character. And well... guess the great news! This is four times better than Johnny!
Gone are the neurotic border decorations, the overly self-indulging monologues, the teen angst and the suspiciously well-rendered psychotic scenarios. This is just extra-dark fun, with riotous scenarios (hey, who's so unlucky to be abducted not by one, but two alien killers in the same night? The same day he learned that his desk-pal at schook is the son of Satan?) and clearer art.
The only negative comment: yes, that damn stick-noodle boy or whatever it's called is still in somewhere. Oh well.

As a follow up to the infamous JtHM series, Squee is a lighter more playful ride through Jhonen's world of creepy.... stuff. Everyone loved that cute hapless little boy who was so afraid of being killed by the crazy neighbor man and just about everything else! Now he stars in his own series of trauma, fear, and misery. But our job is to laugh at his expence. Squee is the sane fellow in a world of stupid aliens, cruel parents, creepy teachers, and zombie school mates. Know this as well, dear readers, you haven't seen the last of Johnny.
The second part of the book is a real treasure. It contains the Happy Noodle Boy comics, the Wobbly headed Bob comics, and the MEANWHILES from both Squee and Johnny. (The individual comix) They're side stories, but many are quite humorous and shocking. So go, and partake in the Jhonen-y goodness.

basically if you havnt read this book yet you must be either dead in your grave(you should still read it anyways)or you are one of those 'i dont read books cuz im cool' people so, DAMN YOU!PEOPLE WHO HAVNT READ THIS...its funnie and has really good artwork that makes me jelous down to the root of my soul and bone marrow...i remember one day, explaining this book to my mom, and as she looked at me strangely and said 'thats sad' i imagined forcing her to read it, because she was neither dead or one of those 'cool' peoples and i did not understand the concept. besides the squee part of it theres a lot of extra goodness in here for you and me to enjoy and stuff(to bad its not in color though)so if you like comiks and funniness and good art buy this...but dont explain it to your mom unless she is super or you want her to stay far away from you like my mommy does...im officially rambling on and on and on now....goodbye

I'm one of those people who kinda prefers Johnny to Squee, but I still must say this statement:
BUY THIS!
Well, with that said, let me explain. It should be fairly obvious just from the cover that this isn't your father's comic book. The styles are so abstract and twisted, you just have to read it over and over again to absorb it all. And it all follows the sad, sad misadventures of a very unlucky little boy, Todd. (Known as Squee, of course) Squee's closest friends include a homicidal maniac and the son of the devil. He doesn't get much love from his parents either. All this leads to is a series of horrifically funny scenerios that pit poor Squee with the types of things we fear. But we laugh. And laugh. And laugh.
Another reason to get this: Meanwhiles. Actually, I wasn't paticularly fond of these, but they seem to be wildly popular so I thought I'd bring them up. These include Filler Bunny, one of Devi's less successful dates, Happy Noodle Boy, and Wobbly Headed Bob.
So if you love Johnny or Invader Zim, you'll like this too. Buy Johnny and Squee today!

I stumbled upon this in a bookstore by accident. Thankfully, I recognized the name Jhonen Vasquez from the funny as heck show Invader Zim. I was saddened to hear that the morons at Nickelodeon took it out of production. I was even more upset when I learned that Nick also owned the rights to all of the characters on the show! Boy am I glad that Squee and Johnny didn't make cameos' on Invader Zim; that would have been a black day indeed.
If you loved Invader Zim, then Squee's Wonderful Big Giant Book of Unspeakable Horrors will help fill the void left in your heart, and hopefully their will be more Jhonen Vasquez comics and cartoons in the future. No one else out there has his brand of subversive humor.

I was laughing about 20 seconds into the book, the part where Squee is praying for his dad to get what he wants because he's not very happy, and at the same time his dad says "I wish that kid were never born!". Then the story progresses from there. The whole thing is LMAO funny. And you can't forget the Meanwhiles. Those are little short comics and they are funny as hell!! I especially like the one with the guy on the date eating chicken, who gets sudden, unexpected diahrea cramps and tries to explain it to his girlfriend. I highly recommend this book to anyone with a kind of sick sense of humor. Also I would only recommend Squee for 13+ ages because it swears a few times.

Squee, we saw him at the beginning, now see him at the end. After being featured several times in Jhonny the homicidal maniac, Squee finnaly gets his own series. Squee is flat out hillarious! The comic peers into the life of a corrupted boy whos life seems to be cursed. An ignored soul whos only friends are his bear shmee and the scary neighbor man(Jhonny, who makes a cameo)the rest just die shortly after being in contact with him. My favorite part of the book however was the true tales of human drama and the meanwhiles. These in betweeners are collected in all their knee-splapping humor. You'll close this book with a smile, i guarantee it.

incredible...simply incredible. Yes this is a comic, but it is by no means a CHILDRENS BOOK. It contains much course language sexual and drug themes implied abuse and gory violents. I say this as a warning for one reason and one reason alone, I dont want parents of kids who watch Jhonens show on nick called INVADER ZIM to write in complaining that this book is filthy and that they werent warned. I also dont want them writing letters to nick demanding the show be be pulled because of the mans previous work. Someone at Nick offered Jhonen a show when they saw an issue of this comic, so if you like the show you will most likely enjoy this as well. However it is not inoccent like the show almost is. This comic is blatent and even at times obseen. But, it is also one of the funniest things you will ever read if you can mock yourself. the book is also worth buying because Jhonen put SOOOOOOOOOOO many little hidden things in this book that you notice something new every time you read this book. it has depth beyond the obsiniety too. it is touching and heartbreaking with an ending that will keep you thinking and talking if you get it. BUT this book should not be read without reading Jonney the Homocidal Maniac or JtHM for short this book is a sequal of sorts to that book and JtHM:the directors cut should be read first.

This book was a great thing to read. Squee's just the kind of kid you can relate to: his parents hate him, he's picked on in skool, his neighbor's a homicidal maniac, there are aliens after his organs, and his best friend is the Antichrist...okay, so he might not be the easiest kid to relate to, but he's still too cute, huh?
To tell the truth, this is one of my favorite comics I have ever read. It's funny, it's childish, it's completely sick and degenerative at times...and it was really uplifting after reading JTHM. The stories are delightfully creepy and horrible, and would make any censor want to projectile vomit all over their three-peice suit. As a warning, however, the 2 sickest (in my opinion, though I still read them with laughter and insanity) are the 'Granpa Hatey' and 'Dooky-Blood' strips. So if you have an extremely weak stomach...you know what, if you do, just don't read it. I don't think we want your guts all over the floor.
Squee's Big Giant Book comes with all the Meanwhiles, True Tales of Human Drama, Happy Noodle Boys, and Wobbly-Headed Bobs that Jhonen has published, with the exception of the HNBs in the JTHM Director's Cut. These are all pretty hilarious, however, Wobbly-Headed Bob does get old after a while.
So...umm...read it. Or I will eat your brain with cheez dip. Yum.

I can't remember why I added this book to my wishlist originally; I think I had come across some Crab Scrambly illustrations on a google search, which led me to the book he and Jhonen did together and I then added a bunch of stuff from there. I had heard of JTHM years ago, but had never read that series (and still haven't, but it's on my list now)...So while I have always been a fan of dark and gruesome humor, writing, and illustration; my palate had been limited to Edward Gorey and Tim Burton prior to this.
I am happy to say Squee instantly won me over and now has a special place in the '13th circle of hellish childhood nightmares' section of my mind...Jhonen Vasquez perfectly captures just how freaked out things and people can make you as a small person and how sometimes the very things that you fear the most, can also become your best friends and confidants, helping you to cope with the insane world in which we are brought up. I look forward to expanding my collection of Jhonen Vasquez works and similar artists as well.

Personally, I have not seen the big book version. I own the indivitual comics myself but all in all I believe they are basically the same. Being a complete Jhonen obsessor, it is hard not to love this book but I assure you, even if you have no idea who the heck Jhonen Vasquez (He has created Jhonny the Homicidal Maniac, Invader Zim, I Feel Sick, etc) is you'll be falling off your chair in horrific laughter. Squee! (No typo, it's suppose to end in an exclamation mark) is a comic about a yound boy by the name of Todd, better known as Squee. His parents hate him, he has no friends (unless you count Satan's son and a homicidal maniac), and he spends plenty of time talking to his freakish teddy bear, Shmee. Just to make things worse, anything that's terrifying, horrific, grotesque, or down-right bad has happened to him. From being chased by aliens, to being almost eaten by grand-fathers, to zombie attacks, this little boy has seen it all. It seems the only thing that helps him through it is Shmee. Jhonen is a pure genius. His work is amazing. Just a warning: This book's humor is a tad twisted. It is not meant for the weak. Overall, get this book!

This was by far the best book i have read in a long time. i just got it yesterday and i already finished it. Well anyways, Squee is a little boy who has the worst life ever. No matter how he tries to make things better, they get worse. He has a little stuffed animal friend named Schmee, and he's friends with Pepito, the antichrist. The part when he ate dinner at Pepito's house was hysterical. From the time i opened the package containing this marvel, to now, i haven't been able to put this book down.
The first half of the book is squee, which i already desribed. The second half is meanwhiles and other little small comics, two of which are about Jhonen himself. When i was reading Happy Noodle Boy people were staring at me because i was laughing like crazy. As reading this book though, i found myself utterly amazed. I haven't been able to get J.T.H.M. but i look forward to getting it. But as i was saying, this book is a must read if you like dark humor, inside jokes, and above all, dooky blood.

But it's still really good. Rather than following Johnny and his adventures, this book centers on Squee. From being abducted by aliens to fighting giant bugs, Squee really doesn't get a chance to rest. If JTHM was too dark for you, Squee would definitely be a good choice. You get Squee, and then after that, you get the infamous 'Meanwhiles' and 'Wobbly-Headed Bob' series. This comic is recommended to anyone with a dark sense of humor or any fan of Vasquez's other works. Pure genius.

Poor Squee, his parents hate him, his grandfather wants to eat him and he has not one, but two alien races trying to kidnap him...oh, did I mention his homicidal teddy bear? This book is full of dark offbeat humor that I simply could not get enough of. I have lent my book to so many friends that the pages are falling out. Aside from the Squee comics there are also Happy Noodle Boy, Wobbley Headed Bob and plenty of Meanwhiles.... If I feel the need to laugh until it hurts, I reread this book.

Squee is my 2nd favorite non-manga comic! My first one was Johnny the Homicidal Maniac (also created by Jhonen Vasquez) which has quite alot to do with the Squee comics. Squee is one of the most twisted and hilarious comics I have ever read! Jhonen Vasquez is a genius! The comedy in Squee is alot less psychological (i guess)and has alot less dialogue than in JtHM. Plus, in this book, it includes the "meanwhiles" that were excluded from the JtHM book! Plus some more Happy Noodle Boys. If you need a good laugh, try reading this book (try JtHM too)!

This is definitely the "book" for kids(or disturbed teens, or adults for that matter) that will make them have sympathy, or even empathy(hopefully not) for what happens to Todd. This is a hilarious compilation of all of Jhonen's work with Squee, and Meanwhiles which are kinda like(or are) fillers for the rest of the comics. Personally, I liked the fillers more than Squee itself. In having it in my posession since September, my cousin and my friend(as well as her sister) have borrowed it about twice each. It's one that you can find the tiny details that you might've missed the first time that you read it... or the second... or third. but still, just get it- you'll understand.

This book was really funny! I mean it, I couldn't stop laughing. This is the lighter side of Jhonen that doesn't have as much of the brooding in it as JtHM did but it's really worth the buy.
The reason I didn't give this a 5 star review is that after you get sick of the jokes, you find yourself skipping the mini-stories and it gets annoying when you've skipped through the whole book. I've tried waiting a few months until I've forgotten the jokes and reading it again but that didn't work. So this book really doesn't get better with age. But it's still really worth buying and it sets itself apart from all Vasquez's other works. It is very different and more sketchy and a little cruder than Invader Zim and has a little morbidity in it. But it's better for kids that JtHM.
The only thing I hate about Vasquez's works is that the fans try to imitate his drawing style, his sense of humour and they make *really* bad fan fiction and butcher the characters with fan art. So the fans are the only part you should watch out for.

Hi this is a GREAT book that anyone with a twisted head can enjoy! The first half of the book is Squee! who is a kid who doesn't really have friends, his parents hate him, and he always seems to witness horrible things. Such as his best friend getting attacked by a dog. The second half of the book is the Meanwhiles, which are smaller strips that are just as good. BUY IT!

Anyone who has read JTHM must get this book. It's all of the individual Squee comics put in one big giant book of unspeakable horrors.
Nobody loves poor little Squee with the exeption of his stuffed bear, Shmee, who keeps Squee as sane as he gets, but influences him to do bad things. Squee is a smart little boy though, and won't do anything bad, because he doesn't want to be like the scary neighbor man(Johnny).
This book basicaly just intails some of Squee's unfortunate mishappenings including Aliens, bullies, Senior Satan and the Anti Christ, a dog that looks like a sheep or something, and some things that aren't that scary at all. There's alot of pain bieng inflicted amongst children that might not deserve it, but you are suppose to laugh at it. It's funny, really.
All in all, I encourage you purchase this fun filled book!

For those of you who found JtHM annoying and pretentious, give Squee a try. Gone are the whiny rants and social commentary. All that remains are over the top storylines and hillarity.
Squee is an unfortunate child who encounters horror after horror in his young life. It definitely has that "I can't believe that just happened" quality to it.
The "Meanwhile" strips are also very good, retaining a similar feel, despite not featuring Squee.

SQUEE is another MUST for anyone who can handle dark comedy. Also, if you look closely you will notice tiny things, such as....Ms. Bitters and ZIM from Invader ZIM are in there somewhere...look...you will see them.
JCV also stuck the missing "Meanwhiles" from JtHM directors cut in there.
Thats his marketing technique ya know... ;)

If you read Johnny the homocidal maniac, then you know who Squee is, a little boy (who's real name is todd)...his mom ignores him, his dad hates everything about his existence, and his neighbor is...well...a psycho killer who stops by for band aids. this has all the four isssues of the comic series, and things from JTHM that didnt even get in JTHM: the director's cut... if youre only starting to get into this world of Jhonen Vasquez's art, you should get this...everyone should get this really...

It is a fantastic comic book full of hidden messages within every page and created with a unique vision. This particular selection of stories was my inspiration as a kid to search for more work done by Jhonen Vasquez. Some tales are funny, others made like mini horror shows and most are simply intriguing. I highly recommend this book even if you're not into graphic art because you don't have to be a fanatic to enjoy it for what it's worth in entertainment. Forget Invader Zim, this is Old School good.

I'm working on a comic book so i wanted to see the examples. Unlike Jhonen's first book this one wasn't that thoughtful. JTHM was more of sad brooding interpretation to Sci-fi theory of universe creation. (Until reading jthm i thought comic books are supposed to be just funny =) squee is much better drawn but has absolutely no storyline (let alone scientific theories). The main reason for you to buy this one is to get the meanwhiles that didn't appear in JTHM: DC.

Jhonen Vasquez is one of my favorite comic book writers/artists. His sick sense of humor and darkly complex yet strangely simple drawing style just fits me.
Squee is just a lovable character who is surrounded by weirdness. Maybe you felt that way as a child. Maybe you feel that way now.
I can't wait to see new work from this guy.

Squee, the product of a truely disturbed genius. Jhonen Vasquez does a terrific job of delving into the mind of the unwanted, un-needed, and unloved child. The paranoia, the nightmares, the horror. Through the backalleys and through disturbed schoolhouses of zombies created by the twisted public school system, and even in the pathetic world of wobbly-headed Bob, Vasquez treats us to the world of thr lonely and sad hearted, the sick and twisted, and the poor innocent crigenically frozen bunnies. Please, Oh GOD please, let these poor fellows die... especially that poor poor bunny...

This book ensnares a sweet little boy who is caught up in the attrocities of the world such as dysfunctional parents, boogie men, and next door neighbor's named Nny. This is not for the timid or easily offended reader as you are destined for a tumultuous ride into this boy's world accompanied by his teddy bear and his fears against everything. I highly recommend this book to those who are looking for something sadly comedic.

Little kids rejoice, there is hope for your doomed generation. A cartoon named "Invader Zim" was released awhile ago on nickolodeon; the creater, you guessed it, Jhonen Vasquez. Now, after watching that, I knew squee would be very similar, and if you look closely, you'll notice that they're VERY alike (some examples include Ms. Bitters, the aliens from "abducted", and others). Conclusion, get this book.

.... not Wobbly Head Bob. I can't say enough good things about squee, meanwhile, true tales of human drama and, for some reason that completely escapes me, I even adore happy noodle boy. Wobbly Head Bob on the other hand litterally gave me migranes. Painfully depressing. PAINFULLY. Like a hundred million termites sing showtunes in you brian painfully.
Otherwise, it's a wonderful book and most definately worth that week and a half I didn't eat lunch to save up my money and buy it. But do yourself a favor and skip the section with Wobbly Head Bob. You'll thank me later.

This book is, in the fewest words possible, amazing. The characters are intelligent, funny, and even a little creepy. Although a little more tame than JTHM it is still greatly disturbing and entertaining. I also love all the extras that were from the original comics of JTHM that were added into here. overall a great graphic novel for any intelligent reader.

Very funny material, introspective. I read Squee first not expecting too much and liked it a lot, then later picked up a Johnny the Homicidal Maniac and felt like I wasted my time with it. So liking this doesn't mean you'll enjoy Johnny or the other works.

Simply the funniest thing I've ever read! I have a very open (some would think demented) sense of humor, but this is laugh out loud stuff. Even if it disturbs you- It will make you laugh! I want to be burried with this book! Squee' got it bad! Real bad! Poor kid...... The extra material- "Meanwhiles, Wobbly Headed Bob, and Happy Noddle Boy, are pure genius!
Vasquez must have had a more disturbing childhood than most! It takes a specail breed to create stuff like this!

Squee follows the horrible life of a tormented child. Sounds preety macarbe huh? But it isn't I find jhonen's work halarious and creepy and extremely well done in one emotion I like to call this emotion "wee-plee" I don't know what it is but It's what the mimes told me to write. If you don't like what I just wrote, stupid aliens, dookie blood, and HORRIBLE parents you will not understand or like this book.
Jhonens other work is good to I definatly recogmend JTHM (jonny the hommicidal maniac)

This has been one of my most favorite books for nearly ten years. I find myself thinking about some of the jokes within the book and laughing aloud in the most inappropriate places (i.e church, work, class.. anywhere that I'm bored). I absolutely LOVE this book and I recommend it to anyone that appreciates dark humor.

Squee's Wonderful Big Giant Book of Unspeakable Horrors is a wonderful collection of almost all of Jhonen's works. Come to think of it the only not-really-semi-non-important character missing from it is Tess... No matter. It has the Antichrist, Satan, Johnny, and a stitched up teddy bear (Nny's doing)! Who could ask for more? Yes, yes... it has Happy Noodle Boy as well as all the Meanwhiles and Wobbly Headed Bob. I'm starting to convince my self to go to Great Escape (my local insane comic book store) and buy it... If you like not so deep, insane, questionably tasteful fun than here it is...

Jhonen is so great! I love his comics, and I think that he draws very well. Some people may not like his style, and it is a bit weird, but I enjoy it. His comics also make me giggle, which is great. In this book I felt so bad for poor little Squee. His big eyes and the horrors that he has to face make me just want to hug him, ya know?

If your a fan of the JTHM series or Jhonen Vasquez, this is another book to own. Based upon a child named "Squee" who lives next door to JTHM. Squee has a very traumatic childhood, but remains a loving yet constantly haunted little boy. Also "filled with meanwhiles", the book also expands on other various storylines seen throughout all of Vasquez' work.

This book had much less of a plot line than JTHM- okay so there wasn't really a plot line. But it was fun anywho. Happy Noodle Boy became annoying to me, as did Wobbly Headed Bob. Some of the instances are just plain disturbing -chickenscrewing anyone?- but funny in a completely gross way.

This is a great book by Jhonen...I've always been a fan, and this one was a good addition. Some of the stories are so funny that I actually teared up laughing with my husband reading them and noticing the characters overly animated faces! Gotta have a broad sense of humor and i suggest you check out the innards to see if you have a taste for the humor. Very funny/offensive. HAAA

OK this one will be a short review, predominately because this is a compilation of Jhonen's Squee series, but still a definite must have for all Vasquez fans, if for no other reason than the reprint of the Meanwhiles (if you don't know what those are then you're lacking in your daily dosage of mind torture and desperately NEED this book)

If you're at all a fan of Invader Zim or any of Johnen Vasquez's other work, this book is for you. Or if you just like reading about a weird little boy being tortured by everyone and everything imaginable, the same is true. Anyway, this book is a great read and something anyone not too easily offended can enjoy.

I have to say that I have not always been a HUGE comic book fan but this has completely changed my views. This book is funny and very intelligent. The drawings come to life immediately. I can't imagine anyone not enjoying this comic. It's really worth the read. Also, once you buy it, don't let go of it... it's a keeper.

If you've seen invader zim, you'll love it. I gave this book such a low rating for one thing: language! There is an average of a curse word a page. Not just the usual slang, but things like the "f" word and other "hardcore" cuss words. It would be so much funnier w/o those words.

If you've read "Johnny the Homicidal Maniac," then you will be familiar with the cute little boy named, Squee. Squee is a kid who seems to have the worst luck in the world. His parents hate him and wish that he would someday vanish without a trace. All of the school kids hate him and torment him. To make matters worse, he has the most dreadful nightmares about monsters and aliens. He even meets these creatures when he isn't asleep. From running away from his cannibalistic grandpa to persuading the aliens to take his parents away instead of him, from battling the dreaded "Dustmites" to the threat of becoming a mindless zombie school student, Squee is destined to grow up having some serious "issues." The book also includes the comic strips "Wobbly Headed Bob," "Fun with Filler (aww, look at the cuuute little bunny rabbit doing his filler dance!!),"Happy Noodle Boy," and the "Meanwhile" strips that were very much absent from "JTHM: The Director's Cut."
While I think "Johnny the Homicidal Maniac" is Jhonen's most creative and disturbing work, I found "Squee's Wonderful Big Giant Book of Unspeakable Horrors" to be much more entertaining and hilarious. There were many times where I was laughing very loudly as I was reading this. It's so funny that so many horrible things can happen to such a cute little character. It makes you feel guilty for laughing... but that quickly goes away and then you laugh some more--and in an even more demonic and unrelenting tone! The drawings are great and the characters are extremely humorous. Another cool thing is that Jhonen LOVES to throw in hidden messages and jokes within certain panels, so be on the lookout for them. Another reason to read this more than once.
Again, this is not intended for younger readers. While I found this much more easier to take than "JTHM," it's still very twisted, dark, disturbing and graphic. There are some very dark themes and imagery in this collection of comics, so it's not intended for those who easily get offended or disturbed. And, you must keep in mind that this book is here strictly for entertainment purposes only and is not to be taken seriously. Jhonen loves to poke fun at everything wrong in society--and even at his own work!
If you want to read something very twisted, deranged, and hilarious, "Squee's Wonderful Big Giant Book of Unspeakable Horrors" is just the thing for you. Again, it's nothing for the easily offended. Even though it's a pretty short read, I found this to be one heck of an entertaining read and it's something I'll be sure to read a number of times in the very near future. Another slam-dunk for Vasquez and his sick and warped sense of humor! -Michael Crane
