I saw the movie before purchasing the book. I was disappointed with the book. I was hoping to read about Bart's life in greater detail and the struggles he went through as a child. The book was more about his travels with the band. Not what I expected

Bart Millards early years were shadowed with heart breaking
verbal and physical abuse from his very spiritually lost and bitter father. Gods hand was on him even through those very difficult years by giving him the love of music, the gift of awesome vocals and a great sense of humor as an escape.
How God uses the painful and difficult trials to teach his chosen to grow in faith, teach perseverence, mature us. Even when we cant see the good in our circumstances, God is orchestrating all things behind the scenes for our good in His own timing for the good of all who believe on His sons name Jesus Christ. Barts lyrics reflect raw emotions that are real, resonating to the broken souls, lifting up the name of Jesus to rescue us.

This is a remarkable book that is so much better than the movie. The movie was very good but this book is wonderful. They left so much out of the movie that I thought was important. This book made me smile, laugh and cry. It touched my heart. His testimony in the back was a blessing to me. I've always loved this song and had it played at my beloved husband's memorial service. My husband went through cancer like his Dad and before he died had both of sons holding his hands just like Bart and his brother did. I couldn't help but cry since it brought back so memories after 13 years. I highly recommend this book.

I chose this rating because reading this came at the time I was experiencing doubt and exhaustion. I was starting to care too much about what others think of me. Was I doing enough? On the first hearing of Imagine tears flowed down my cheeks I am the youngest of five and mother died when I was ten years old. My dad was abusive. I have loved the Lord for as long as I can remember and I have always wanted to please Him. This book could have been my story. I have always known that I am led by the Spirit and it guided me to this reading. God is indeed good and reveals His perfect timing.

Being a Christian and a big fan of MercyMe, I found this book, "I Can Only Imagine" put me on a more personal level with Bart Millard and MercyMe and closer to God and seeing how God worked through their lives! From What Bart dealt with growing up, the forming and naming MercyMe, to the fact that just because negative things are happening in Bart's life, his faith remained strong and God was working with him by his side. I have already recommended it to many friends and can not wait to my actual book to come in to continue to share the story. I can also not wait for the movie to come out as well. I received a copy of this book in exchange for me to write a honest review of it. My hard copy of the book came yesterday!

A wonderful book of love, hurt and grace. Bart Millard of the music group, MercyMe reveals the story behind the number one song, I Can Only Imagine. He gives us the “nitty gritty” details of his life, his relationship with his parents and brother, his early years in music and how God has brought it all together. His hard life was one of a horrible childhood due to abuse by his father. He shares how God changed his life to a life of love and forgiveness as he watched God transform his father into a man Bart aspires to become. We see how he trusts God for the future and how these plans have enabled him to become not only the leader of a number one group, but also a man who has learned to be a loving man of God as a husband, father, and friend.
This song is so special to so many, but to especially dear to me as we had it played at my dad’s funeral. I never hear it that I don’t think of him and try to imagine just what heaven will be like when I get there.
I highly recommend this book for all to read. I received a complimentary copy from Thomas Nelson--W Publishing through Netgalley and the opinions expressed are my own.

I Can Only Imagine byBart Millard. Oh my gosh I just cannot believe that Bart invited me into his life so completely and honestly. Bart Millard just in case you don't know is the lead singer of Mercy Me. His childhood was terrible. His dad beat him. His mom left him at a very young age. But this is what Bart did to escape that cruel life-- he went to school and church. He took every opportunity to escape his home and be in church and do whatever that church had to offer. His dad was a great athlete in his day and Bart tried to be like him but when his ankles were crushed in a football accident Bart found his gift. God had given him a voice to sing songs up to heaven. "I Can Only Imagine" is Bart's gift to his father after his death. The movie evidently doesn't show it (I have never seen the movie) but Bart's dad was a good guy who after suffering a head injury became an awful guy then when he was given a death sentence of cancer Bart's dad turned to God and once again became a good guy. Bart learned to love and appreciate his dad during this time. This song which Bart wrote in 10 minutes is Bart's gift to his dad using the comment that his grandma made while leaving the gravesite. Bart gave this gift to Amy Grant to sing so that it would become a great song but Amy in her love for Bart gave it back to him knowing that this song was his song and that this song would put Mercy Me at the top of the charts.
I would recommend this book for reading to anyone whether or not they have heard the song or not, though I cannot imagine not having heard this song. This song topped the charts for Christian Music and then managed to crossover into many other venues of songs. This book shows the courage that it takes to be Bart both as a child victim of horrible abuse as well as the hardworking man who wanted to sing songs up to heaven and make it in singing and then finally making his marriage be the success that it is today. This book is a great Christian read, a great Bart Millard/Mercy Me read, a great social justice read. I can't imagine anyone not reading this book and enjoying it even though I cried so much that my sinuses are surely cleared forever.
I received this book from BookLook for this review.

Bart Millard shares his incredible story, telling about how he penned one of the most touching modern songs – and penned it in ten minutes, in fact. But, of course, as singer Amy Grant tells him, “Bart, you didn't write that song in ten minutes. It took a lifetime.” – very true words. And this books fully tells that story of his...
“Music gave me hope when I felt hopeless. Love when I felt unloved. A reason to embrace life when I was dying inside.”
If you've already enjoyed watching the new film “I Can Only Imagine”, or are looking forward to watching it – maybe it's time to read the book. Written by MercyMe's lead singer and writer of the chart-topping song “I Can Only Imagine”. The book explores more of Bart's life in further detail, than the movie allows. And written quite well, if I may say so (and it's so quotable too! Some of my favorite quotes are included in this review). If you're a fan at all, I'd recommend enjoying both the book AND movie – but in the order of your choice.
Let's discuss the story a bit. Bart tells of his childhood in depth, of his father who turned abusive after an accident (Bart specifically says “It was like a Jekyll-and-Hyde story), and how as a young boy growing up in that household, Bart had to turn to his imagination for means of escape. Music became his passion in life.
“But through all that noise in my life, whenever I heard a perfect union of melody and lyric in a song, something traveled from my ears to my heart and made me feel alive.”
Now, if it hadn't been for his Mammaw Millard, there'd be no MercyMe, and there'd be no “I Can Only Imagine”. This woman is the heroine of several important chapters in Bart's life, and a mighty lady she is.
In the latter half of 2001, the song “I Can Only Imagine” hit the radio – everyone was listening to it (Christian and non-Christian alike) – and it topped the charts and broke records.
“No one can write better scripts than God.”
I loved the book – Bart shares so much of his life on these pages – some of it is laugh-out-loud funny, and some of it completely serious stuff. He tells all about how the band MercyMe formed, and about how sometimes... things just lined up so well, it could have only been done by the hand of God. He shares some deeply personal things about his family, and opens up tale after amusing tale to us, his fans. I gained strength and inspiration just from hearing about his successes, failures, and other experiences.
I definitely recommend this to anyone interested. It should be passed through the churches to give everyone the opportunity to read it for yourself.
“While I am here on earth, I am both a work in progress and already made whole because of the cross. I am a child of the risen King who will wrestle with the flesh. I'll win some and lose some, but it can never change how Christ sees me because the cross was enough!”

The back story of the famous song is written by the lead singer/songwriter of MercyMe. It begins as a story of early trauma, abuse and neglect, resulting in a wounded, damaged adolescent. Bart Millard’s father, an intimidating, severe figure in Bart’s life for many years, was diagnosed with cancer, which wrought a spiritual transformation that was life changing for both of them. A relationship characterized by pride and fear softened into one of repentance, honesty and openness. Bart says his father went from being a monster to being his example in all things. Bart’s father died in Bart’s senior year of high school, but by then, a firm foundation had been constructed for Bart which would guide him all his life.
Bart tells the story of the formation of MercyMe, a band that self-promoted for many years, ministering mostly through youth worship events, including conferences and camps. Living on a shoestring, the band worked together to cover all the bases necessary to keep itself going. This is a fascinating story of the group’s slow success, living on the edges of contemporary Christian music.
Bart’s paternal grandmother, a great influence in Bart’s life, was the inspiration for both the band’s name (“Mercy me!” she once said. “Get a real job!”) and the famous song. After Bart’s father died, she said, “Bart, I can only imagine what Bub must be seeing right now.” Her words percolated in Bart for many years before he wrote, in 10 minutes in the middle of the night, the words to the now-famous song.
The tale of how the song wove itself into the band’s history and gradually skyrocketed to fame, taking the band along with it, is a fairly simple story, part of the great charm of this very readable book, told simply and engagingly.
A bonus is the sweet story of Bart and his wife, Shannon, who knew at 13 that she would marry Bart. The reader senses the great blessing these two have been to each other and how Shannon’s family helped preserve Bart through his traumatic childhood.
Everyone will enjoy this book, although two groups of people may struggle emotionally with the first third of the book: those who have not been exposed to childhood trauma and those who have.
I received this book for free in exchange for my unbiased review through the Thomas Nelson BookSneeze Program.

Wow. Where do I begin? I was working for a small town Christian bookstore when Almost There released. A very good friend grabbed me one day as I came in for my shift and pulled me back to our music section.
"You've got to hear this!", she exclaimed, telling me the song had been a part of the worship service at her church that week. I slipped on the head phones and within the first few lines I was awestruck.
Mercy Me, a group I knew nothing about, had captured every thought and imagining I'd ever had about Heaven. I bought a copy and when my husband got home that night I told him, "You've got to hear this!"
My husband is like Bart: music, all types, genres, and decades make up his world. His life, like Bart's, is lived to a soundtrack. It was a miracle I'd found a song my husband knew nothing about, but it was a song that moved him like it moved me. (He still gives me "credit" for his love of Mercy Me!)
I shared all of that so you can hopefully grasp just how special this book is to me. Bart's story and how that song came to be is woven into the tapestry of my own walk with God. I changed how I worshipped after hearing "I Can Only Imagine", and now that my parents are with Jesus, the song and now the story have taken on a deeper and richer meaning.
Watching God move through Bart's life was a painfully gorgeous illustration of Romans 8:28. Of course, we have the beauty of hindsight, while Bart was living in those moments of fear, isolation, and pain. I cried for him, and I kept telling him to hold on, because better days were to come.
Obviously, he knows that now! But that's how powerful his story is. You just want to encourage him and pray for him and his dad, his entire family, as you read. And it's written like you're talking to him at a coffee shop, or over dinner.
I'm so grateful Bart included the last chapter in the book. He'll probably never even read this, but just as "I Can Only Imagine" changed my journey with God, his latest song, "Even If" has arrived in perfect time for this leg of my journey. A new, harder road that keeps me telling Jesus, "Where else can I go, Lord? Only You have what I need, and have been faithful to me."
As a woman in ministry, that song resonates with me, just as the song that led to a love for Mercy Me and their soundtrack did all those years ago. The journey wasn’t easy for Bart Millard, but as he wrote in the book, "But the fruit on a tree's branches is not grown for the tree but for those who will eat from it."
Praise God for such good and nourishing fruit!
I received an advance copy from the publisher with no services or obligations promised in return.

You may be familiar with the hit song “I Can Only Imagine,” but you probably don’t know the history and background of the song and the story behind it. In “I Can Only Imagine” Bart Millard tells his story along with the story behind the song. Really, his story IS the story behind the song as Millard tells of the difficulties that he had growing up.
Throughout Millard’s recounting of his story, he describes some of the details of his early life and just how MercyMe became a band. Millard tells of his dual ankle injury while playing football that led to him quitting football and joining the choir. Eventually, he even starred as Curly in “Oklahoma.”
Much of Millard’s story focuses on his relationship with his father and the pain and abuse that he suffered at his father’s hand. After being hit by a car while directing traffic on a construction site led to a frontal lobe injury in his father’s brain, his father was never the same. His parents eventually divorced and Bart was left to live with his father. Even though Millard had an older brother, his father somehow seemed to have targeted him with the verbal and physical abuse that he doled out.
While in the 9th grade, Millard’s father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Knowing that it was terminal resulted in a dramatic change in his attitude and behavior. As his father faced his own mortality, he began to become more like the man that had existed before his accident. The abuse stopped and he began to really embrace the faith that he had only outwardly professed. This began a relationship and friendship between Bart and his father that had not existed before.
As his father’s health continued to deteriorate, their relationship grew deeper and stronger. When his father finally passed away, Millard talks of just how much God had done to restore the relationship that had been so frail and volatile.
Along the way, as Millard describes everything that happened between him and his father, he also tells of how he and his wife, who he’d known since they were young, kept coming back to each other. Eventually, they realized that there was a reason for that and they broke off the relationships that they had with other people to embrace what had been right in front of them all along.
Millard also tells of how he wrote “I Can Only Imagine” in a matter of minutes and how the music came to be at the end of a recording session which had all but been wrapped up. And in the miracle of this short span of time came about a song whose span and influence exceeded any other song before it.
The story of the song, the band, and this father-son relationship engrossed me. Having lost my own mother to pancreatic cancer, I was gripped from the very beginning. I could relate to Millard’s story in some ways and not in others, but his telling of the story was powerful and moving, drawing me in and keeping me reading page after page as the story unfolded.
“I Can Only Imagine” had always been such a powerful song to me, now having read the story behind the song and the songwriter, an already powerful song somehow became more so. Regardless of where you stand in terms of faith, it would be hard to read this account without being moved in some way. I urge you to pick up a copy of this book and dive into this story. You won’t be disappointed and it may just be an encouragement and a jolt to your faith to read of how God’s hand worked in the life of Bart Millard.

The song, I Can Only Imagine by MercyMe has a forever place in my heart. it was one of my mom's favorite songs and it was one of the first choices to use in her memorial video.
Memiors and Biographies are the most difficult for me to review. I'm commenting on more than just a book, it's someone's life.
I Can Only Imagine by Bart Millard is a sad, but uplifting read about how this beautiful song by the same name came into existence.
Bart walks you through his childhood, which like many isn't entirely pleasant, onto adult years and what shaped him and MercyMe into what it is today. He reveals where the band name came from, as well as the history of the beloved song. throughout the book you feel what he has gone through and may even relate to it.
the journey of how this song came into existence is beautiful, the meaning behind it even more so.
being somewhat of a 'non-believer', I didn't crack open this book for the scripture or spiritual significance of it. However, it was noticed and notin a bad way.
it's hard for me, believing the way I particularly do (someone who was raised in the church but stepped away by choice because of events that made everything questionable) to read a faith and spiritually based book and take the same things out of it that my Christian counterparts would. Suprisingly though, I did not walk away empty handed, so to speak.
I understand the faith Bart has, and k also understand the spiritual struggles he faces throughout the book. I am also thankful that he was able to present us with a beautiful piece of music, that even I can completely enjoy. ?

What will it be like for a believer in Christ to die and go to heaven? Bart Millard’s answer is “I Can Only Imagine.” If you have not heard this beautiful worship song, I encourage you to go to YouTube and listen right now. Then read the memoir I Can Only Imagine written by Bart Millard, lead singer and organizer of MercyMe and writer of this song. God inspired him to write the song, and he had it down on paper in ten minutes, but as legendary Christian singer Amy Grant told him, referring to his background, “Bart, you didn’t write this song in ten minutes. It took a lifetime.”
Millard’s memoir details what a movie by the same name could only highlight. A product of a severely dysfunctional family, he suffered extreme physical, verbal, and emotional abuse followed by a long period of neglect which could still be punctuated by paternal outbursts of anger. But through it all, God had a plan. This book details Bart’s relationship with God and the dual miracles He worked in the life of Bart and his dad. How could Bart’s father morph from a monster into a role model? How could Bart forgive his father for the horrible abuses wrought on him and go on to become a kind and loving father and husband himself? The answer to these mysteries is summed up in one word—God. More exactly, the miraculous power, love, and mercy of God.
The book also shares how the band MercyMe was formed and worked its way up the ladder in the dog-eat-dog competitive music industry while remaining true to God’s calling for them. Theirs was not a path of instant success, but it was one that glorified God and reflected His plan and goals.
This memoir is well written and honestly reflects the struggles Bart had in his personal as well as musical endeavors. The part of the book that deals with abuse is, of course, difficult to read, but Millard shares enough that the reader understands the depth of what happened without being drawn into lengthy descriptions of the brutality. Millard shares his pain but also inspires with the wondrous miracle of God’s love.
I would like to extend my thanks to netgalley.com and to Thomas Nelson (W Publishing) for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

Several years back, I was driving down the road. I was listening to a Christian radio station, loving the songs that were there. Then I hear the words, "I can only imagine...." and proceed to listen to the song. By the second verse, I had to pull over and listen closely. By the end of the second verse, I was bawling my eyes out, had my hands raised and was "praying" the song to the Lord. It was emotional and moving, and I knew that there had to be a story behind. This was the start of my love of MercyMe's work.
Flash foward several years, now there's a movie called "I Can Only Imagine". I watch the trailer. I cry, yet again. from the feelings I get. Now, I have the chance to review the memoir about the story behind the song and movie. And, oh my. What. A. Story. It's raw. It's moving. It will leave you smiling, it will leave you crying, it may even leave you angry. But, it will bring you closer to God. It will make you fall to your knees once again, and really imagine what that moment would be like when you stand before your Creator.
This is not a book I normally would pick up, as I'm not fond of memoirs, but this book, with it's pictures to coincide with Bart Millard's life, is beautifully, poignantly written and really brings forth the pain, the hurt, the anger and the redemption and forgiveness he went through. This is definitely one I recommend, with 5 stars and lots of praises! I can't wait to see the movie next!
*I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and was under no obligation to post a review, positive or negative.*

I CAN ONLY IMAGINE is a memoir. The author who performed the song bearing the same title wrote this book.
He includes photographs, both colored and black and white, in the middle of the book. It is not quite 200 pages. It has become a major motion picture. Bart Millard, the writer, opens with an Author's Not and an Introduction. He spread his actual content throughout ten chapters. Millard ends with a Conclusion, Appendix 1 and Appendix 2, Acknowledgements, and author bios (Millard has co-written this book with Robert Noland). Both Bart Millard is involved in Contemporary Christian Music. Robert Noland is an experienced author, having written over 76 books.
This memoir is what I have expected. I have known of and heard the son "I Can Only Imagine." I expected a positive, powerful, and inspirational book. It is all these. I felt both anger and sadness at the author's childhood. His dad's abusive behavior comes from factors he had no control over, though they were no excuse. His mother's neglect, however, seems less explainable. However, she and the author are reconciled today and he has forgiven her. His story is one of rising from a bad childhood to a highly successful Christian rock music career. But he covers how his very success and pressures of being in the spotlight had strained his family life and almost destroyed his health. It gives a reader a peek into the life of a Christian music artist.
I recommend this book for any fan of so-called contemporary Christian music. If you are one who likes "I Can Only Imagine," this is a book you will want to read. Even if you do not care about so-called Christian rock, you may be moved by this book's themes of forgiveness and healing from a troubled past.

"Isn't it interesting how some life-changing devastations are actually like the crossover switches on train tracks that take you in a totally new direction, often forcing you onto the path you were supposed to be on all along?"
That one profound thought from author and musician Bart Millard is an accurate synopsis of the message of this book. And what's great about this book is the relevance to your life and your struggles and your hopes for the future. While you may not be the lead singer of a famous band like Millard is, that's not what this book is about. This book is about choosing perseverance and faith in spite of your present circumstances. This book is about experiencing and trusting and experiencing again the faithfulness of God. It's about continuing to praise Him regardless of your feelings... and then seeing Him work things out in a way that could have only been God.
This book makes me want to be more faithful to the Lord when things aren't going the way that I think they should. It reminds me that His ways are higher than my ways, that His plans are always better than my plans, and that I need to hang in there when the going gets tough, because He is worthy of my praise, no matter what, and He has always proven Himself to be faithful in my own story as well.
If you've seen the movie inspired by this book, this book will give you even more to think about than what the movie did. I highly recommend both.

If you're already a fan of MercyMe, then you will enjoy this book. In fact, if you haven't been exposed to Bart's music, like me, you'll still like reading it. This is especially true for those of you who have been going through a difficult, painful time and need a reminder of God's kind providence. I read "I Can Only Imagine" at the recommendation of a friend and found that, even though my struggles were completely different, there was enough common ground that I could relate to Bart. He became a companion in suffering who encouraged me to persevere in the hard times. Whether you are being teased in grade school, or you're in a dysfunctional family, or your career isn't working out as you had hoped, God has something for each of us that we can never imagine - intimacy with God.

I was first introduced to MercyMe in 2007 when I was first starting this blog. A friend told me to check out a song of theirs called "God With Us," and I've been hooked on their music ever since. When I first found out that Bart Millard, the lead singer of the group, was releasing a movie for their hit song "I Can Only Imagine," I was immensely excited, and even more so when I saw this book was available for review.
Listed as one of the most popular Christian songs of all time, "I Can Only Imagine," was written by Bart as a tribute to his father. This book sets the background for Bart's life leading up to writing this powerful song. From dealing with the divorce of his parents, to the abuse he suffered at the hands of his father, and to dealing with his father's battle with cancer and death, his memoir recounts all the in between details to explain just how personal the writing of this song was to him.
I couldn't help but think of the phrase "beauty from ashes," as I read this book. Bart Millard gives a touching personal story of the redemptive powers that Jesus Christ is able to perform in our lives. How that even though we have so many messy pieces, Jesus is still able to form beauty from each of them. This is not just a story about the hit song and band, but a story of love, forgiveness, and how a personal relationship with Christ transforms us into new creations. I can't say enough about how touched I was to read this story and discover all the many things I didn't know about Bart Millard and how MercyMe was formed. I highly recommend it to everyone.
I was given a complimentary copy of this book for review purposes. I was not asked to give a favorable review; all opinions are mine.

I have not watched the movie, I Can Only Imagine, yet. I wanted to wait and read the book first. I am glad I waited because I think this book adds more back-story to the movie. Of course it would, because a movie is only two hours or so long. How can you fit many years into that?
Having now read the book, I can tell you that the story is a compelling one. Bart Millard went through some very challenging times with his father. Some of the things that this man used to do to his son are beyond words. Given that background, I am surprised that Bart and his brother both grew up to be well-adjusted people. That took time and the Holy Spirit, however.
By the time I had finished reading I Can Only Imagine, I could only sit back and say, "Wow."
This book itself is sort of different to read. It seems like the time periods get tossed around. It is more like a book broken down into different life experience sections rather than a book following a logical progression of time. There are some photos that are fun to look at and help the reader to visualize some of the people involved.
Overall, I enjoyed reading I Can Only Imagine, and I look forward to now watching the movie of the same title.

I highly recommend this book even if you didn't watch the movie. However, if you watched the movie it is an excellent supplement to it. Not only does it fill in some of the areas in Bart's life that couldn't fit into a 90 min movie, it adds dimension to some of the scenes and shows how many people impacted his life and ultimately the lives of millions that have been impacted by the music MercyMe produces.
You will laugh, cry, and feel the pain as Bart tells his life story from pain to victory and beyond. If you listen to the audio version, Bart tells it like only he can tell the story.
I couldn't stop listening to it and as it seems with many successful people when no one else was around to help, his mamaws stepped in and did what only a grandmother can do.
It tells how his dad changed from a 'teddy bear' to a monster after an accident and a brain injury put him in a coma and then tells how the redemptive power of the Lord transformed his dad into a man he wanted to be like. Additionally, he adds information concerning his mom, her impact on his life and how his parents forgave each other before his dad's death.

I was so excited to get the chance to review I Can Only Imagine - A Memoir by Bart Millard. I'm sure by now most of you have already seen the movie, you know the song, but did you know there's a book?
After seeing the movie the first week it released I had so many questions as to what was true to life and what was "hollywood upped". The Memoir has answered all my questions. By reading the book you get to go behind the scenes of the movie, plus a backstage pass, so to speak, to Bart's life.
One thing I especially liked about the book is that included Shannon's side of the story. I loved this addition and it was great to read her take on things. I also really like that Bart included personal pictures of his family. I admit that I looked at the pictures first. This actually helped me to put real faces to the people I was reading about rather than Hollywood actors.
I would recommend this to any fan of Mercy Me and the song/movie I Can Only Imagine. It will give you a much more personal look into the life of Bart Millard.

I first heard the song, I Can Only Imagine, on mainstream radio and couldn't believe a song about Jesus was playing on a Top 40's radio station. Shortly after that was my conversion to a saving knowledge of Christ and the first Christian concert I attended was MercyMe. This is also where I sponsored my Compassion International child and to this day, he is still in my life - seeing him through his college days. So, this song and this band have always been and always will be special to me. Bart's life story shows how clinging to the Lord and being around the family of Christ could create beauty from ashes. Bart is so honest and transparent, yet his humility and forgiveness shine through all the trials and tribulations he has gone through. I love the 75 scriptures that Rusty shared with him and he with us at the end of the book - I have read through them and I know I will time and time again. I read this book while home sick from work and it was such an encouragement to me! I cannot wait to see the movie! Thank you for sharing your life with us, Bart!

Bart Millard’s book I Can Only Imagine was a book that I had to put down several times while I was reading it. His captivating, emotional, and spiritual roller coaster journey through life was so profound and impactful that at various moments I found myself crying so much that the words on the page became too blurred to read and other moments where the overwhelming urge to simply stop, pray, praise God, and worship was simply too much to ignore (as if we should ever ignore that urge). Bart’s honesty about the trials, failures, obstacles, and triumphs is nothing short of inspirational. If you are looking for a book that is uplifting, honest, and lays out the vital truths of God’s anointing upon a person’s life and His divine mercy and grace, then look no further than I Can Only Imagine.

Have you ever picked up a book and it was so well written that you couldn’t put it down? Well this is one of this books and BART does an amazing job pulling you into his life and making you feel like you yourself have always been a part of his story! His down to earth, write like he is talking to his friends style makes you feel as though you have always been friends! The power and passion he writes with grips your heart and changes your life. I absolutely loved this book not just for Bart’s writing style but he is never shy with the truth of God’s word. You can tell through his honesty and transparency that he really has been transformed by the grace of God. His story is laced with laugh out loud moments all while needing to grab tissues! Quite easily the best book I have read this year!

The first time I heard “I Can Only Imagine” was when I accept Jesus into my heart and always imagined how I could be the hands and feet of Jesus. Now I know!!!! Share Jesus with anyone and everyone! Bart Millard’s story is inspiring, shows how God’s grace and love surpasses everything. “I Can Only Imagine” written by Bart Millard is the story behind the song and his life. We serve a mighty God, He transformed Bart’s dad and He can and will transform you if you allow Him to. I cried, I heard God speaking to me through the words of Bart’s story. Once you accept Jesus into your heart, your life is transformed and you will never be the same. Jesus loves us so much that He died for us. Bart gets right to the truth, his story is a must read.

You don’t have to be a Christian to have heard of the song “I Can Only Imagine,” sung by the group MercyMe. Back in the early 2000’s it was a quick hit in both the Christian and secular music worlds. Almost 20 years later the song is still well known to the world. But what’s the story behind the song? Speaking as someone who is very emotionally effected by music, I (along with many others), will take a song I’m hearing and find a way to personalize it and give it meaning for myself. For Bart (along with other artists), his music is a way for expressing the deepest parts of his life with the world. As fellow artist Amy Grant told him “Bart, you didn’t write this song in ten minutes. It took a lifetime.” (pg 146). Bart’s childhood was no fairy-tale to say the least. His parents divorced when he was young and his mother quickly remarried. For a time he and his older brother Stephen were bounced back-and-forth between their parents until their mother divorced again and moved away with another new husband. At that point the boys lived with their dad and only saw their mom a few times a year. Their father was a football star back in his days, but was bitter over losing his chances at “making it big.” He also suffered a head injury that many believed altered his ability to control his temper. Bart shares that his early days were full of many spankings that lead to whippings and beatings. His father’s temper terrified him. Never did Bart think that he could have a “normal” or even “good” relationship with his father, until his father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and the LORD slowly started to change his heart.
While there are a lot of movies “based on the book,” this book is very clearly “based on the movie.” Bart talks about the actors chosen to play both himself and his family in the film. He talks about how difficult it was to fit his entire life in a 2-hour time-slot. This book was written to fill in some of the gaps that the movie didn’t have the time to fill. It gave him the chance to talk more freely from a personal perspective instead of only seeing what happens on a screen.
I am always an advocate to “read the book before watching the movie,” and I continue that stance now. There is so much more that you can get out of a book than you can in a movie. This book was written with the actual intent to go along with the movie so I definitely recommend watching the movie too.

FANTASTIC book! I enjoyed every minute of this one. I was so excited to read this as MercyMe is one of my favorite bands and I LOVE Bart Millard's voice. This book was so eye opening to the horrendous things he went through as a child and through his life. Had me in tears on so many occasions - just breaks my heart to see children treated so badly. This book takes you through his journey. I never knew MercyMe had been around so long! So great to hear the heart of the band and learn about their journey and commitments too.
I whole heartedly recommend this book. Gives a new appreciation to the depth of MercyMe's lyrics, knowing the pain behind many of them. Also seeing how these guys are just sold out to Jesus.
This book also mentions about the movie of Bart's life that's coming out - but in the movie they had to take out a lot so Bart wanted to fill in a lot of the gaps that the movie wasn't able to include.
Please note that I was sent a copy of this book for review purposes, however all opinions expressed are entirely my own.

I never doubted Bart Millard had a story to tell. I just never knew the depth his story held. I had heard bits and pieces over the years, but I wasn't prepared for the raw honesty this book holds. And, the thing is, Bart would never have had to share it with us. I am so glad he did because in his story is the reality of God's amazing grace.
There were funny and exciting moments where I didn't want to put the book down (the history of Mercy Me and the courageous dedication of the band) and there were moments my eyes were so filled with tears and my heart so heavy I had to set the book down and walk away (the history of the abusive relationship between Bart and his dad). This book is more than just "the story behind the song." While the story behind the song is worthy of telling, this is the story of the people behind the song and the reason Bart is the man he is today. Though it is Bart's story, I think anyone reading it will find pieces of their own lives within the pages.
Reading this book felt more like having coffee with a friend than reading words on a page. So, pull up a chair, pour a cup of your favorite brew, and listen to a friend share his story....a story of the ways grace changes everything. Whether or not you know the music of Mercy Me, I think anyone will appreciate this story. It is a story about a little boy who experienced profound pain yet found healing and meaning in life through faith and hope in a God who redeems even our darkest of days.

"I Can Only Imagine" written by Bart Millard is an amazing story of God's great grace and love. Bart shares the testimony of his life, showing how God works through the hurt and broken places in our lives to bring healing, peace, forgiveness and restoration, when we place our trust in Him. Bart shares many of his life stories that brought him to discover his gift of singing that God gave him which led to forming the band, Mercy Me and to writing many of their great hits. One of the greatest songs ever written, in my opinion is "I Can Only Imagine" because it reminds me of how great and awesome it will be when I stand in the presence of my Savior! This song was written by Bart through the life and transformation of his abusive dad to God loving dad.
You will also share in the love story of Bart and his wife and how God works all things together for our good when we love Him and are called according to His purpose.
This is a book you do not want to miss, it is truly a journey that shows how God has great plans for all.
I thank NetGalley for allowing me to read and give my honest opinion. It is a Great Book.

I Can Only Imagine chronicles the story behind the number one selling Christian music single of all time. The emotionally charged story of Bart Millard's life and specifically his relationship with his father is a testament to the power of God in the lives of his children. Whether you are a MercyMe fan or not, this book is an enjoyable read and provides insights and details that are not in the recently released movie version.

An amazing book. Bart Millard’s Memoir has so much information about the life behind I Can Only Imagine. Actually tells the story of the God of Bart Millard and his working through his life to bring him to the man he is today. A very inspirational book. I liked the way the book was divided into ten chapters, each of the ten chapters plus the introduction and the conclusion were named for one of Mercy Me’s songs. Each had a few lines of the songs included. An amazing story of God at work in the lives of Bart and his family and Mercy Me. I’m so glad I read the book before I saw the movie.

The first time I heard I Can Only Imagine, I knew there was a deeply personal story behind it and have always wondered what, exactly, that story was. Bart shares painful details about his childhood and reveals how God not only changed his life but his dad's life as well. Bart doesn't just fill in the backstory, he connects to his life today as an artist. By the time you're done reading thus book, you feel like you grew up as good friends with Bart. Deeply personal yet he ends on a positive note and points you to Christ as your source of hope. A must read if you enjoy the song I Can Only Imagine.

WOW, what a book! This book took me on an emotional roller coaster. There are some hard, raw moments on these pages that brought tears. There are other moments that brought great encouragement and excitement. This is a story about a boy, his father, the escape music can create. And how the Lord God wove His story through it all. This book is real life. Everyone can relate to what Bart has lived at one point or another. This book is a wonderful addition to my collection. I will be reading this again. I encourage you to buy and read for yourself as well as to give. This story needs to be heard.

I Can Only Imagine is an amazing song, and I was so excited to hear that a movie had been made depicting the life of Bart Millard, lead singer of MercyMe and the band member who wrote the song. Then when I had the opportunity to read the book, seeing the movie had to wait! I just finished the book and really enjoyed it. It was not an easy read, because the things Bart had to go through as a child were horrible, but to hear how God played an amazing part in that story and how Bart knows it, is an inspiration.
The book also has some tidbits not found in the movie, which I really enjoyed learning about. If you have ever listened to I Can Only Imagine, and would love to learn what inspired the song, you will want to read this book!

I Can Only Imagine Is an amazing book. I was humbled just reading it, Mr. Millard's story is fantastic to read. To know all that he is gone through in his life and how GOD fit exclusively into it. It shows how GOD can truly heal a man. This story is so touching, and since listening to, and have all the CD's of- Mercy Me - it is a story I have been curious to read. Do not miss out on his story you will not regret it. I received a copy of this book from the Publisher and Netgalley; all the opinions expressed in this review are all my own.

I felt it a honor to be able to read this great book by Bart Millard. This was so amazing! A lifetime of living to get this song. I know he said 10 minutes but it was his life. Life of abuse and a story of forgiveness. By the grace of God, Bart is who is today. A life changed through God and music. Please read the book it is so much detailed of his life . The movie will be coming out in March but to me only so much can go into the time frame of a movie. I plan on doing both. Is there room for second chances in life? Yes I believe there are. Well written!!

This book really connected for me. It is very well written and really not me emotionally. While I was already a huge MercyMe fan, this book has brought me closer to the band and more importantly to Christ. I can now understand some scriptures better than before. This is a great book on two levels - as a good story and also spiritually. It is definitely worth reading. I could not put it down before I finished reading it. It made a long airplane ride go by very quickly.

What a thought provoking book about the lead singer of Mercy me, Bart Millard. I adored the movie about his life and the song "I Can Only Imagine " and really wanted to learn more about this amazing man of God. The book portrayed someone very human and down to earth who has been through trials and tribulations and come out on the other side loving God and his family. I highly recommend this touching book and the movie.

When I hear songs from Mercy Me band, it is the same as hearing Bart’s voice in this book. He’s telling stories of his life which give hope for all suffering people, and life for those who are searching for answers. I could not put this book down. When the song came out 9-11 had occurred and my mother was dying of cancer. This was a grief song for me and it help me through those hard days.

Wow what a story of God’s grace and love. I cried, I rejoiced, I felt God speaking. I loved the story of Bart’s life and how open he was. The abuse part just broke my heart. I have three children that we adopted from foster care that dealt with abuse. So this hits close to home. But God is awesome. He transformed Bart’s dad and He can transform you if you let him. God is still writing our story. As I read this I just kept thinking BUT GOD....

There are a few songs which speak to your heart and spirit from the first time you hear them. "I Can Only Imagine" was that song for me, and reading the story behind the song has only made the song more meaningful and endearing.
Bart Millard opens his own heart in his memoir to reveal the painful years of his youth, the emotional and physical abuse received from his father, and the abandonment of his mother. Yet through all the pain and struggles, Bart learned to depend more and more on Jesus, and the power of his faith carried him through those hard years. This book gives hope to others facing similar life circumstances, and Christ's message of mercy and forgiveness told through Bart's life is a crucial one for all. It's a powerful book, and one that won't be soon forgotten.

I just finished the book; couldn't put it down. I won't give anything away, but here's a bit of a review:
1. God is amazing!
2. Amy Grant; amazingly kind.
3. Bart and family; is there any dross left? Can't be much. xoxo
Lastly, Bart and his father's relationship struck a similar cord to the final scene in Ben-Hur (my all-time favorite movie). Judah Ben-Hur returns home after witnessing Jesus forgiving his accusers while on the cross. This transforms him from a man filled with anger, bitterness and a desire for revenge to a man who has had the sword removed from his hand. At that moment, healing and restoration takes place in his family, something Judah could not begin to imagine.
Bart's story is similar in analogy. We've seen this song touch many lives. My heartfelt prayer is that this movie will be the catalyst for forgiveness and restoration in many families, especially in the body of Christ. Amen!
*Tissue Alert for the book and the movie, btw.

If you saw the movie “I Can Only Imagine” you will want to read the book to get the real in-depth story that a 2-hour movie cannot convey. And if you didn’t see the movie then you will still want to read the book, because Bart's story is incredible. There are so many miracles, answers to prayers, and ways that God has worked in amazing ways. This memoir will inspire and challenge you.
Bart performs his unabridged audiobook excellently.

I liked I Can Only Imagine by Bart Millard. I really liked the movie and the book added history and clarified some issues. Writing one's memoir is a lot different than writing songs and not everyone can do both.
I would recommend I Can Only Imagine to readers who: want more information about the life of B Millard than the movie provided and Christian books.

So sad in places, poignant and also hopeful...just amazing to see God’s hand in so many ways; He will forgive us and redeem us if we will just come to him humbly, just as we are. It really hit home with me as my Father was very distant and angry with me and who also got saved three years before the end of his life. God redeemed our relationship as well.

One of the best books I’ve read in a long time! A true story of trials, tribulations and God’s amazing grace! From tears to joy, you will be blessed beyond measure reading Bart Millard’s story. Thank you for sharing your life with us! I have loved this song from day one and it will always be my number one song now knowing the story behind it! I have a life verse and now I have a life song, I Can Only Imagine!

Wow is really the first thing I have to say about this book. I love the song and the band. I never really knew the life Bart lead before Mercy Me
,but it really shows the power of God and what he can do in the lives of his people. Knowing the story behind the song and if the person that wrote makes it even more powerful and a true testimony to what God does.

I’ve been singing the song by this name for years not knowing the story behind it. This book tells of Bart Milliard’s upbringing by a father no one would wish for. He leads us through many of the same things we all experience, except Bart was dealing with abuse at the same time. Yet, somehow, God used and changed this life for good. He showed Bart, and me, he can use the most unlikely circumstances for good. Never doubt what God can do when we are at our weakest. *I received a copy of this book courtesy of the publisher in exchange for my honest review.*

One of the best books I have ever read. Bart wrote the hit song I Can Only Imagine after his father died from pancreatic cancer. His passing made Bart wonder what his father was experiencing in Heaven and what we in turn will experience one day. This is the story behind the song, Bart's journey. A truly honest story about the relationship between father and son, all the bad and the good, his lowest moments and triumphs. It is an amazing story of transformation, forgiveness, emotional healing, and love through Jesus Christ. Very poignant and touching with refreshing little moments of humor. I cried and laughed. I couldn't put it down. This book serves as a reminder that God has a plan and purpose for all of us. I received a copy courtesy of the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

A movie can only offer so much of one's story and there's so much more story here. Bart's bio and the mission of Mercy Me are truly God-saturated events that point to the work of Jesus Christ on the Cross. So much redemption for these folks but a redemption that can be found in all of us. I loved diving deeper into this story of how God orchestrates every detail.

Thank you Bart for this inspiring book of real life struggles and faith. God’s timing at every turn shows just how much he was present with you during the hardest times. This is your story but more then that it is His Story. Whether a person is going through abuse, losing a loved one, struggling with career or relationship this book speaks volumes of God presence, provision and protection.

What an honor it was to be able to pre-read this book in order to provide a review for someone considering this as a read. The book is written with such openness and vulnerability, and is purely from the heart. Bart shares a life-changing experience with his readers – and this offers an opportunity for a life-changing experience for his readers. You feel what his life was as a child and what it became as an adult based on a strong faith and the powerful influences in his life. Forgiveness is a an amazing thing. I couldn’t put the book down and you won’t be able to either. I can only imagine the impact this book is going to have on its readers. Enjoy!

Omgoodness, this book is incredible. So many things but too close too home. As I struggle with the loss of my mom a. Year ago on April 30, Bart reminds of how good God is. Cancer truly sucks but we also got a 1 1/2 with her. I think I am one of the few to miss the theater. I will be watching when it hits DVD. I need tissue to finish this book. If you saw the movie, get this book. The story continues.

When the film I Can Only Imagine came out a few months ago, my boyfriend and I immediately made plans to go see it. We both teared up multiple times while watching it, and since then I have seen the movie a total of three times. As a writer, the movie was incredibly inspiring for its message of trusting God to move mountains, and to focus on honoring Him over our worldly success from chasing our dreams. About a month ago, I saw an ad for an eBook sale for Mr. Millard’s memoir version of his story and could not pass up the opportunity to purchase it. Over the past weekend, I was finally able to read it, and it was impossible to put down.
Non-fiction is not my usual go-to genre. In fact, it usually takes me months to finish other Christian non-fiction books. However, the open conversational tone Mr. Millard kept throughout the memoir kept my interest and made the experiences all the more relatable. The experiences themselves are raw and real and will take you on an emotional roller coaster along with Mr. Millard. Aside from the physical and emotional abuse featured in the film, he also mentions his struggles when initially dating his now wife, Shannon, his oldest son’s struggle with diabetes, among numerous other ups and downs God has helped him face.
The way Mr. Millard explains how God moved mountains for MercyMe was my favorite aspect, especially when he recalled that the band received criticism from labels early on, telling the band that their songs wouldn’t work in the CCM industry. As a Christian author who has received criticism for certain aspects of my writing, this serves as a beacon of hope. Mr. Millard emphasizes that God can use who He sees fit however He sees fit in their own unique way, and for that, his memoir will have a lasting impact on me.
Mr. Millard’s memoir is well worth reading, as it points to God in the midst of abuse, fear, loneliness, pride, abandonment, anger, grief… basically every emotion and wherever you’re at in life. I highly recommend it and thank him for telling his story.

I LOVED this book. I laughed and cried with Bart. I read the book after seeing the movie, and the book has so much more of the story. Great, easy read that inspired me and left me thinking about my own life and the legacy I'll leave. Even if you've seen the movie, you don't know the whole story, so READ THIS BOOK!!

The powerful, uplifting story of the song that changed Christian music forever. We all have heard MercyMe’s song, I Can Only Imagine, at one point or another, but not the story of how it came to be. Imagine is a powerful, uplifting memoir about forgiveness, redemption, and God’s amazing grace.

I received this book in exchange for my review from the publishers. Readers get an indepth look at what Bart's life was like from growing up in a broken home to an abusive father. He shares his life stories and how things changed between him and his father over time. I truly see how God can turn things around for anyone, no matter what we've done or where we've come from. This is a must read and tear jerker.

I received a copy courtesy of the publisher in exchange for an honest review. I have followed Mercy Me for many years through their music. While I knew a little of Bart's story, I never knew the extent of what he endured as a child. This story is such an example of love, mercy and grace. A definite must read!
