While it's no "Goodnight Moon," there is something still entrancing about the prose in "The Big Red Barn." Some of the wording is awkward, but the story is nice (life in the barn from morning to night, cute animals!), and the board version is perfectly sized for small hands. Illustrations are lovely and the length is perfect for our 14 month toddler.

I got this particular copy for my grandson's 3rd birthday. He loved it so much that he slept with it for weeks. One of my sons had it completely memorized by the time his copy finally wore out so much it couldn't be taped together any more. One of Margaret Wise Brown's best books ever!

Want sleepy contented toddlers? Read this to them EVERY night! I have read it literally THOUSANDS of times to my three children over the years, have the all the poetry memorized, and even I get sleepy just thinking about it...

It's a pet peeve of mine when rhyming books use the same word to rhyme with. This is very repetetive and not a captivating story. They are nice pictures and my 18mo enjoys looking at it.. but I can't stand reading this book.

I normally love her books and my daughter loves animals, so it seemed like a no-brainer to get this for her. But my daughter lost interest in the book quickly because it wasn't a very interesting or catchy book. It didn't flow well and I found it dragging on. It got to a point in which my daughter shut the book, midway, and asked if we could choose something else.

The Big Red Barn is one that my children and grandchildren have loved to read this book in its littler form. I suspect that this size will be so ungainly to handle that the child that I ordered this book for will not be able to handle it or hold it in bed, as did ours. I suspect also that because it is not a board book, it will not hold up very well. There was no way of telling when I ordered the book, that it was such a gigantic copy, but I would not have kept it had the date that I needed it for was too close to return the book and get another of the right size.

I knew it was going to be used, but it was chewed up and in such poor condition that I threw it away. It was disappointing since it had been one of my kids' favorite books and I had wanted to share it with someone else.

My son is 2.5 and this is probably his all-time favorite book to this point. I am back here to buy a second copy because my son threw up on our copy last night, and it's not salvageable. We can't go long without it, so it's a good thing I have Prime and will get it in two days! My son has this book partially memorized and likes to "read" it to us. It was one of the first books that got his attention as an infant, and he continues to love it and take it to bed most nights, hence the throwing up on it while it was in bed with him.
The story is great for kids who love animals. We used it a lot when my son was first starting to talk and we were teaching him the names of the animals. It's a nice little bedtime story about all the animals going to bed in the barn. I'm sure we will continue to read it for many years to come.

My husband's Grandmother bought this for my daughter when she was born almost 12 yrs ago. I read and read this book to both her and her little brother, I can still almost read it from memory. They LOVED it, especially because I would make the animal sounds and stamp me feet then the animals did. It's a beloved book in my house, and will be one of the one's that gets passed down. I'm now going to buy a new one for a new baby in the family, I hope that baby loves it as much as my babies did.

Another book has migrated downstairs for my review. Before I wrote this review, I had to do a little research on the author. I vaguely remembered that she had no children and died young -- I was right: she never married, had no children and died of a post-surgery blood clot in 1952 at the age of 42. Yet her work lives on in a big way. Why?
Big Red Barn, like Goodnight Moon, reads like a lullaby. It is about impossible to not lull your voice when reading it. Its phrases end with a gentle rhyme, not forced-feeling rhyming couplets. And, also like Goodnight Moon, as the book winds down, the phrases become shorter until they just disappear and the story is over. That's why an adult at a child's bedtime would like. Why a toddler likes it, I don't know. It could be the animal noises interspersed in the story. It could be the lullaby effect of the book. It could be anything. I just know that my toddler likes it.
Felicia Bond is very well-known for her illustrations in the "If You Give..." series, and rightfully so. Her pictures brim with personality, color and humor. None of those qualities are lost in this edition of Margaret Wise Brown's classic.

My favorite! This was one of my favorites as a child and now one of my child's favorites. Neat fact, this book was re-written from the original publication. New illustrations too! The original did not rhyme in the same way and was very different. This is the version I grew up with though, and grew to love. Worth reading and sharing with your little one!

I love the story. It has been a favorite of many of my 2-3 year olds so our copy has long ago worn out. I came here to order another one and didn't think to check the dimensions of the book. Out of all the books I have purchased online, I have never checked the dimensions and have never felt the need. I don't plan to make that mistake again! Whoever thought a book this big was a good idea must not have children. Or maybe they planned to read it in a stadium and wanted to guarantee the kids could see the pictures from far the back row of seats. Geesh.

Of course, favorite changes every few days with little kids. It's wonderfully illustrated; very realistic representations of various farm animals. The rhyme is classic Wise, too; the rhymes are random and sometimes have couplets, sometimes four lines together, etc. I like to point out, or have the kids point out, the animals, practice the noises the animals make, and try to find the butterfly on every page (it's not there, though, on every page...). I like that even bats are represented kindly (not demonized), and that the animals are so distinct from each other (there aren't 4 duplicate dogs). I really like how the rhyme winds down at the end. It really helps as a last or maybe next-to-last nighttime book.
It's a well done book with great illustrations. If my copy were to burn up today in some odd spontaneous combustion, I'd probably buy another copy.
Get one as a gift for a new mom or buy it for your own kids.

I wrote the below review when my daughter was 14 months old. However, by 18 months, this was one of her favorites, and kept her very engaged. She's now 22 months, and still loves it, and it makes a great going to bed book. She loves seeing how the animals "go sleepy sleep" at night. My daughter was a big reader even by 7 months, so this book took her quite a while to warm up to, but it is a hit now with her, and with her parents. I'm leaving the text of my old review, so parents of younger toddlers can read it and see how my daughter's reaction to this book have changed, and can read my suggestions for farm books she did love when a bit younger. But, I've upgraded the review score from 3 stars to 5. I take it back-- this is a keeper!
I bought this book before my daughter was born, because it was such a cute, classic book for children. It's been around for ages, gets wonderful reviews, is written by the extremely prolific children's author Margaret Wise Brown, and features a toddler favorite-- farm animals! I LOVED how the illustrations shows life at the farm progress from day to night through the lighting-- the sunset page and the night page are just lovely. And I loved that it is a goodnight book, with all the farm animals asleep in the barn by the end.
Now, for the real test: My daughter. At 14 months, has several farm themed board books and, I am sad to say, this one is not her favorite by a long shot. Every time I try to read it to her, she gets bored about three pages in, and this is NOT her reaction to all books. Having watched her reaction to this and other books, these are my conculsions about why this one is not as engaging: (a) The cadence is not that great for a M.W. Brown book. It can read kind of awkwardly. (b) It is short on things like animals sounds and long on references that young toddlers cannot grasp, like references to children who are not there (but usually play there) and a golden weather vein (NO way board book age kids will understand what that is). In terms of learning about animals, pointing them out, and hearing mommy make their sounds, she much prefers other farm books (for example, My First Farm: Let's Get Working! (My First Board Books). In terms of classic toddler fiction books, she much prefers others like Baby Animals or I CAN FLY (Little Golden Book). In terms of board books, anything by Karen Katz is a bigger hit than this.
Before my daughter was born, I probably would have given this 4 stars, because I love it (despite the sometimes slightly awkward language), but I can't give it more than 3 stars, given my daughter's reaction thus far. If she changes her mind, I'll update the review. For the record, this book came up recently and my husband (not really knowing which books are "classics" that my daughter owns and which are not), deemed this book "boring." So, that's two thumbs down in our house against my one.

Who lives in the Big Red Barn? With the children away for the day, all the animals come out to play. See outside and in, as the animals go through their day. You'll even be able to count the ten bantam hen's eggs! As the sun goes down, the little pig squeals and some of the other animals make their last sound and we see them all heading back up the field to the barn. Who are left out to play? Why the mice, of course!
A well-written, delightfully illustrated book that young children are sure to enjoy. There is SO much to see on each page. FABULOUS!

Adorable, sweet book with nice rhythm. My 2 yr old loved it for a good while, she's over it now but I'm sure will return. It's a really cute book. It has animal sounds without quizzing the poor kid on animal sounds, the writing is sooting, and the pictures are interesting and soft. A nice bedtime story.

These are the things that the little ones, like my 21 month old son, should appreciate in a book.
MWB is widely known for the books "Goodnight moon" and "The Runaway Bunny". I didn't even know about this book until I saw that my husband had picked it up at the bookstore. This book is illustrated by a different artist, Felicia Bond, and her work is sweet and uncomplicated. The story has that same rhythm and beat you follow when reading poetry, but it is also gives a peaceful feeling to it's readers(and the ones being read to).
It's a day in the life of kind of story about animals on a farm, while the children are gone. It is a perfect addition to any child's book shelf and makes for a perfect bedtime story with it's calming effect.
I highly recommend buying this for toddlers! If you already have any of Brown's other books, this one will be a welcome addition.

This is such a great little story for toddlers! So cute and sweet, perfect for bedtime. My 13-month-old will dig through his entire box of books just to find this one (the board book version), and he brings it over to me to read multiple times every evening. There are so many interesting things to point out in the pictures, and I make the story interesting for him by really vocalizing the animal sounds (I even stomp my feet when I read "the horses stomping in the hay" - he loves it!) I would recommend ordering the board book version, as it's a story better suited for toddlers who have a tendency to rip paper pages (plus the board book version is smaller and easier for little hands to hold).

Cute illustrations, but the writing is horrible... the meter is so inconsistent, and it finishes awkwardly. We've handed the book to many adult friends to hear how they read it, and they also could not get a hold of any cadence. There'd be a roll, then some staccato pages, then a roll with new meter, then a weird pause... and it just goes on for TOO LONG.

This one is a complete to read with your child. The wonderful illustrations blend completely with the wonderful rhymes dealing with animals and farm life. It may (or maybe not) be too early to classify this one as a classic, but if I were to make a guess, I would strongly suspect that this one will make the grade. There is something quite soothing in Brown's simple verse and the wonderful blend of watercolors adds to the overall feeling of peace. This is a gread book to read to your child before bed time and I have also found it is a good book to read to a hyperactive group of little ones at school. It seems to calm them down. THis is one you certainly should add to your library. Highly recommend this one.

Big Red Barn is one of those baby books that provokes either charm or annoyance in adult readers, and delight in young listeners. It is marked by Brown's soothingly rhythmic, repetitive text, sprinkled with farmyard animal noises that toddlers will love to imitate. The story opens with "a pink pig/ who was learning to squeal" greeting the sunrise. Other farm animals go about their activities throughout the day, and (just as in Goodnight Moon) the pictures become progressively darker as night falls on the barn.
This classic board book is brightly illustrated, interactive and soothing. It's a good fit for both preverbal toddlers and children who are just beginning to understand how story events progress in sequence. It's a very nice choice for both boys and girls.

We have the board book version, and I have to say, my 1 year old boy loves it. This is one of the few books he will go pick out and bring to me to read, saying, "Bih bah" (Big barn). It doesn't necessarily hold his attention the entire duration of the book, but the rhyming is wonderful, the illustrations fun, and I know it will only be a matter of time before he's willing to sit through the entire book. This one is a keeper.

It was about all different varieties of animals living in a "big red barn". The art work was very detailed. It had nice rhyming words and my little cousin would like it. By Joey- age 10, under supervision of Kevin Christofora, getting kids to read more and evaluate popular books on lists.

I give this book a mixed review. The artwork is appealing in its simplicity and literalism -- evocative, perhaps, of socialist realism. And the work involves an interesting set-up, conceptually: without humans, can animals all live together equitably, in a big red barn, without devolving into "Animal Farm"-style tyranny? But once the set-up has concluded, not much more happens: the animals play together all day and then just go to sleep. The mice continuing to run around hint at still-pregnant possibilities, but then the book abruptly ends. Some greater plot development is definitely needed. Nonetheless, my two-year-old seems to enjoy it, so I'm giving it an acceptable rating, overall.

This book is beautiful. The illustrations are typically excellent Felicia Bond but with a little more drama than whimsy at times. Second best by Margaret Wise Brown (Goodnight Moon is obviously first). The words are lyrical, rhyming, and captivating to the very young, and the older crowd isn't bored to tears or annoyed beyond words after re-reading it a hundred times. I got this book for my son five years ago, and it was his favorite for quite a while. Now my one-year old daughter carries it around and wants it read to her constantly as well. We love it. I believe it's a timeless classic, and every little one should have it in their collection.

I have been reading this story to my son since he was born. Two years later, he still LOVES it! So much so, that we are on our second copy. What a sweet story about barnyard animals. It's a short tale that progresses from day to night with the farm animals. As an aside, another reviewer mentioned that a butterfly is on each page. I've had fun trying to find it. Great children's book!

I don't mind reading this book again and again and again because it's one of my favorites. Margaret Wise Brown is one of my favorite authors for children.
The story is gentle and soft and sweet. The illustrations are charming. The rythm that the words set is rolling and easy. This is an easy book to read over and over agin.
This is a great bedtime story in my opinion. However, my son also enjoys reading it and making animal sounds.
Enjoy.

This is a sweet, gentle book that my two year old really enjoys. It's especially suitable as a bedtime book, describing as it does a day in the life of the farm animals and ending as they curl up in the barn to sleep. My only criticism is that I find it hard to settle into a rhythm when I read it. The cadence is uneven and the rhymes don't always work. I find I often end up skipping lines here and there to make it work better as a book to read aloud.

This book has amazing illustrations and a whimsical story about animals living and playing together in the big red barn. It is the last book I read to my son every night, as the book ends by putting the animals to sleep and the moon rising. My son(18 months) will wave and say 'night-night' to the animals. I think this will be his favorite bedtime book for a long time.

I am completely enamored with this book. The lulling words coupled with the charming illustrations have made it a favorite for my children and I, and we read it every night before bed.
The big red barn follows a group of animals on their day around the farm, as "the children are not here today, only the animals are out to play". From butterflies to field mice, goats, cows and chickens, they each have their own sounds and activities as they play together. At the end of the book the sun goes down, and all the animals return to the barn for bed time.

This is one of my daughter's favorites. The illustrations are well-done, and she loves looking for some of the smaller details (butterflies, mice, etc) on each page. It's a book I enjoy, as well, so it never gets old for either of us! And if we look hard enough, often we can find a small detail we've missed before---keeps it interesting! Most kids love books about animals, and this has a wide variety. Highly recommended!

This book works on so many levels. It's a simple board book for even the youngest readers, but its soothing messages about farm life will resonate well into the 2's and 3's, and maybe even into the early-reading years. We came back to this book again and again when my kids were little and it's still on the shelf... and I keep thinking, "maybe someday, I'll be lucky enough to have a little one to read it to again."

I think Margaret Wise Brown ("Goodnight Moon") was a very talented children's story writer. She had a simple way with words that delights both children and their parents. Her smooth rhyming verses teach your child about the on-goings of a country farm. Margaret Wise Brown's use of the prose is so much fun, you'll find it fun to reread this book many times. Felicia Bond did a beautiful job illustrating.

This is a great book to introduce farm animals to the children. There is no humor in it but it will still able to draw the children's attention with its detailed illustrations and beautiful colors. The book allows you and your child to imagine the everyday lives of the animals that live in that Big Red Barn. The ending was done in a way that would make your child feels that he or she needs to go to bed as well. I love reading it to my child as she also loves to hear the story.

My daughter loves animals and animal sounds. The Big Red Barn is one of her favorite books. This book is quieter than the Sandra Boynton books, and a good choice for cuddling up with at bedtime. After all the animals play in the great green field, the bats fly out of the barn, and soon the animals are all asleep in the Big Red Barn--except for the mice playing in the stack of hay.

A beautifully written book that captures my children's attention, yet doesn't underestimate their capacity to grasp new words like "weathervane" or "clutch (of eggs)." I read this to my daughter at 18 months and she wanted me to read it again and again. Within a month she was reciting it. After reading it so much I memorized it and started using the story to lull my newborn son to sleep. He is now nearly a year old, my daughter is 2-1/2 and they both still love the book. I have yet to tire of it. This is my favorite Margaret Wise Brown book, including Goodnight Moon and Runaway Bunny. Another MWB book that's a big hit for our family is My World.

I read this book to my daughter from the time she was one; she is now six. Now she gets a thrill out of reading it herself. As a mother, I enjoyed reading this book to my children. It is wonderful, charming and memorable.

Our daughter got this board book from a friend when she was born. They told us it was always a favorite of their daughter and they hoped ours would love it too. Well she did, and we love it as well. It has a great sound when read aloud and really makes you want to head off to dreamland. A great before bedtime story that my daughter still asks us to read almost 2-1/2 years later. I will absolutely be passing this great story onto future babies as gifts.

Out of all the bedtime stories and other books that fill my 16-month old daughter's bookshelf, Big Red Barn is her (and my) favorite. The illustrations are remarkable, and the soft and gentle prose is very soothing. As she has gotten older, my daughter has enjoyed mimicing the sounds that all of the animals make. Plus, the story is an important one for children to learn: animals of all shapes and sizes live together happily in the Big Red Barn. It is simply my favorite nighttime book of all time.

I received this book as a gift at my shower. I have been reading it to my son (now 14 months) since birth. When he finally started showing real interest in being read to, The Big Red Barn quickly took the lead as a favorite. I love the way he squeals (no pun intended) through the first few pages, because he's so excited about the book. It's a good thing I've got it memorized, since his pudgy little fingers are always in the way pointing out the objects I'm reading about. The lilting cadence of the rhyme and all of the animal sounds makes this great fun for young children (and the adults reading to them).

Goodnight Moon gets all the hype, but I like Big Red Barn even better. This is a simple story about all the animals who live on a farm and the things they do during the day. No humans are anywhere to be found in this tale. The illustrations are simple and sweet. My 8 month old daughter just loves this book! It's very soothing for bedtime, especially because at the end of the story, all the animals go to sleep in the barn. Wonderful!

The story is so cute and supports interaction and elaboration on every page. There is so much to look at in the pictures you notice something new each time you read it. So sweet. Every child should have this book!

This is an all-time great children's classic. There's something about the book that makes reading it -- soothing and calming -- for both the reader and the child. The words, tone, and rhythm work well...
This was a favorite of our family -- and should be in every baby's / toddler's library.

No other book settles my 3 year old down for bedtime like this book does. You really can't go wrong with a Margaret Wise Brown book. The story paired with Felicia bond's beautifully detailed illustrations, has a comforting and calming feel to it.

This is my daughters most read book. We've probably read it to her as much as all the other books combined. She is 14 months. We ask her to point to certain things in the book (the moon, the cow, etc) and she does. I highly recommend this book.

As a teacher of infants and toddlers, I must say this book is THE BEST! It is one of the few books an entire classroom of toddlers will sit down and listen to all the way through. My kids request this book nearly every day ("Barn book! Barn book!"). I love reading it to my own children (ages 3 months, 2 years, and 5 years) as well. Starts out bright and cheerful and winds down to quiet and calm...great for bedtime!

This is my favorite board book. It follows a full day at the farm, and is full of animals and rhymes. The book is long enough so that it doesn't feel like a one-note story each time I read it to my daughter. The illustrations are lively and full of detail.

I love Margaret Wise Brown's books and I especially love the illustrations in the originals. The illustrations in this edition of The Big Red Barn are disappointing. The artist can't seem to decide between a realistic style and a cute, stylized look. It's not a big deal but when I'm reading the book for the hundredth time to my little grandson, it's the pictures I'm studying and thinking about. He loves the book, though.

I purchased this book for my new, and first, baby. As an eager mother to be wishing to encourage books right from the start, I bought all the "popular" titles, as well as trying this book and several others. I have found that this is the favorite book of my daughter who loves to look at the barn animals hear all the animals sounds that go with it - it is a great choice!
Also loved "The Mitten"!

My 9 month old screams in delight when I pull this book out to read to him. He's engaged on every page. The rhyming, realistic pictures and the story is so darling. It's calming and beautiful... This is a MUST HAVE for your little one's library.

Not impressed with rhymes or illustrations. Not what I expected from Margaret Wise Brown. Rhymes not rhyming very well. Story and art does not take me away. Have a hard time wanting to read it to my son. Not much to take away. Sorry.

My 2 1/2-year-old twins love this book. They ask for it every night, and one of them likes to recite it. He's got the whole thing memorized. Just an excellent good-night book for this age group, right up there with Goodnight Moon.

My daughter loves this book! She's 6 years old and reads it all the way thru. If your child loves animals he or she will love this book. My daughter bugged me and bugged me to get this book for her. I highly recommend it.

I have been reading this book to my son since before he was a year old. He loves the pictures of the animals as well as the text. I've read this book so much, I actually have it memorized! Definitely a book we'll be reading for years to come.

My son loves this book! We've been reading it to him since he was 4-5 months old and he turns 1 next week and he still wants us to read this to him every day. I could probably recite the book word-for-word by memory from reading it so much, but the illustrations are so cute and it makes my son happy, so I will probably never get tired of it. I highly recommend this book!

This book still exists!!! I remember not knowing how to read a single word and still knowing EVERY word in this book from my mom reading it so many times. If you have a child now, Please please please introduce this to them. Definitely a childhood favorite of mine.

The illustrations in this book are beautiful and the animals are truly very cute. My daughter likes pointing to the different animals. They all get ready for nightime in the barn - its just the sweetest! Highly recommend.

Maybe not quite the level of a "Goodnight Moon" or "Runaway Bunny", but an absolute delight. Sweet, simple "story", and beautiful pictures. If a child likes animals, a can't miss, for reader or read-to.

My 2-year-old daughter loves this book because of the farm animals and likes pointing out the scarecrow when he appears. It's a great book for bedtime because it's calming and toward the end it gets dark and the animals start turning in for the night. The illustrations are beautiful and it is an enjoyable read for all. If your child likes animals and the moon, this is a must-buy.

Beautifully written. My 2-year old enjoys it; especially the animal sounds. It's short and sweet, we had a copy before but we had an accident in which it soaked up a full bottle of juice in the diaper bag and I just had to get it back!

This book is guaranteed to be a favorite of your young child. My 3 year old son has read it about a million times, but he still loves it. The gentle rhythm of the words, the clear, easy to understand illustrations, and the simple story make this a great book for snuggling.

This is one of my favorite books to read to my son. The prose is beautiful, concise, and profound. It's a very subtle book and takes some quiet time to truly appreciate it. The Big Red Barn is a picture of utopia; animals coexisting in peace, playing throughout the day, and then resting at night.

I am so pleased with this product. I teach kindergarten and as anyone in this field or a similar one knows books get so expensive. It arrived so quickly and is in wonderful condition. I can't say enough about the PRICE! It is so much cheaper than some of the traditional places I buy from.

Our 18 month old daughter loves this book. Easy to read, easy for her to follow. We enjoy it at bedtime. Words and pictures teach animals, some numbers, colors, etc. Much to gain from this book! Highly recommend!

There's a picture of Snoopy (from Peanuts comics) on the overturned bucket in the area "where the children play." It shows up once toward the beginning and then again in the night scenes. Does anybody know anything about how it came to be included in the story?

This was my son's favorite book at around age 2. We used it as a night-night book saying good night to all the animals before going to bed. I have a tape of him at age 2 "reading" the book all by himself! The rhythmn and rhyme are beautifully written making it fun for the reader and listener , as well.

What a wonderful story! The rhyming text is a pleasure to read, and the book progresses from day to night, making it a perfect bedtime story. I've read it so many times to my five year old twins that we now know it by heart. Get it!!!

This is a great book to read to your child beginning at an early age. The colors are wonderful for them to look at. As you read the story you can teach them all about farm animals. Highly recommend this book to all parents.

This is one of our favorites. The words are such an easy flow and the pictures bring the whole story together in a beautifully poetic way. We absolutely love this story at bedtime. My toddler and I can't get enough of this one.

This is the book my four-year-old son wants to hear every night. He loves every kind of farm story, but this is his hands-down favorite. And will wonders never cease, after about a year of nightly readings, I'm not even sick of it (although I can recite it front to back).

My son loves to read books, but this one does not keep his attention. He likes Goodnight Moon, the Boyton Books, and others, but this doesn't keep his interest. I do like that it shows various animals and their noises.

The illustrations are simple and lovely in this book. The text, however, is very poorly written with a tense that changes randomly. The book contains whole sections which do not fit the flow of the story - a rather sorry accomplishment in a board book. This book was a manuscript that M.W. Brown left when she died unexpectedly at a young age. The co-author then edited the manuscript and the publisher put it out. Read Run-Away Bunny instead for classic Margaret Wise Brown

This is one story that both my children adore. They each have their own set of favorites, but this is one story that gets read to both of them each night before going to bed. It's a delightful tale with adorable illustrations.
