Love the story but the book was misprinted and the binding misaligned. I had already given it as a gift to my granddaughter. Therefore I felt wrong taking it back and returning it. Next time I check the book's condition before give it as GIFT.

If you like Boynton books, you'll love Barnyard Dance. There's lots of action & movement, silliness & fun, and of course rhymes and animals. Our 21-month-old loves it because it moves right along and he can dance to the rhythm of the lyrical text. I highly recommend it!Barnyard Dance!

I have given this book several times to little ones and I always get rave reviews from moms about how much they love it. I can't wait to add this one to the collection when my own little guy comes this fall!

Good book nice rythm but unfortunately my three and a half year old only wanted to hear it once and that's what I'm basing the rating on as he in the end is what I get my thrills from when buying childrens literature.

it brings smiles out every time it is read!!!! a very endearing book to share with the grandkids at my daughter's home. when i recieved an invite to a baby shower, it said instead of giving a card to give a book and sign it and in that way baby grows up knowing you gave the book with lots of love. i immediatly thought of this book and got two!!!! that way i could give one at the baby shower and one to my son and his daughter to enjoy at their home!!!! just before giving the one to my son i was able to read it to my nephew during a visit to meet him for the first time. what a sweet story!!!!

My son typically loves Boynton books. He also is obsessed with his belly button (he's 16 months old) but he really doesn't have much interest in this book. He'll bring me over lots of other books to read to him, but not this one. I think the story/plot line is just fine, but - he obviously doesn't agree much!

This book is absolutely adorable. I fell in love with it the first time I read it. My son is now one years old and is totally getting into books now. It's made out of solid materials so it takes a lot to damage it. The prices online are easily 60% of what you would pay in a chain store so it's a no brainer to get it here.

Sandra Boynton books are never disapointed me.

One of my daughter's favorites, and mine too. We've been reading this together since she was a few months old, and now that she's two she loves reading some of the parts herself ("beebo!"). A very cute Boynton favorite.

This is an adorable book. Not only did my 2 year old niece love it but so did her mother! The illustrations are cute and it is packed with fun images of little belly buttons. And what little toddler does not love showing off her belly button!

I was disapointed with this Boynton book. It is not a cute and clever as some of her others. My son seems to like it well enough but it is not as enjoyable as The Going to Bed Book or Barnyard Dance. I would skip buying this one.

My daughter (15 months) loves animal books so I thought this one would be lots of fun. But, she wants nothing to do with it. The pictures aren't eye catching and the story is confusing for a little one.

This book deserves five stars. I am leaving this review only because the description says extra-big, extra-fat and extra-fun. While it is extra-fun it is neither extra-big nor extra-fat. I was looking for the jumbo board book about 9" x 10" this is a mini board book about 6" square. Where is the extra-big extra-fat edition?

we've got most of the boynton books. even though he greatly enjoys books in general, the boynton books he has never warmed up to. he simply can't stand them - shoves them out of the way and reaches for another book as soon as we open the 2nd page. of all the boynton books, i myself find this one the least interesting visually and the text is insipid. my favorite of her books is hippos go berserk. son doesn't care if it either, though.

I don't know how Sandra Boyton does it. She comes up with the most simple concepts and turns them into books that both me and my kids adore.

My family has nearly the entire Boynton collection of board books. But the Belly Button Book is among the best. There is just something about the little hippo saying "Bee boo" to describe his belly button that cracks me up. And when he points to the balloon and says "Boon!" it just slays me. (Oh yeah that's right. I'm 38 years old and I'm personally enjoying this book aside from the enjoyment of watching my kids like it. You heard me!!)

Even better is watching my son lean over to poke his own belly button every time it's mentioned in the book (which is every single page). He leans over, pokes himself in the bee boo, and laughs...ever single time. It's great.

You just can't beat Sandra Boynton books for kids. They don't teach lessons. They don't have morals. They don't have deep plots. There is no great character development. They are fun little books that usually make very little sense that are extremely fun and well illustrated. And I'm a firm believer that ANY book that makes a kid interested in reading it is a GREAT book for kids. Getting kids hooked on reading and enjoying it young will make them enjoy books more as they grow up. And that's a good thing!!! I've seen Boynton books have this impact on my older kid and now I'm seeing it happen on my younger kid. I'd recommend all of these to any parent, but especially the Belly Button Book.

My son picked this book out at our last trip to the library. That was over three weeks ago. Since then, he has insisted on us reading it at least once every day and gets quite upset when I try to suggest another book. Sometimes we read it twice in a row! Obviously, before this book is returned to the library we will have to purchase our own copy. My son has two favorite parts to this book: The first is when the hippopotomus is explaining what "bee bo" means (BELLY BUTTON!!!); my son breaks out in a huge grin there. The second is for the belly button song. I'm not sure what the tune to the song is so we just made something up but there's no avoiding having to sing the song repeatedly. My son won't let me turn the page until I've sung several rounds. This was a surprise hit for us and I highly recommend it for anyone in this age group.

I used to read this to my niece and nephew years ago. Now o read it to my 16 month old. A nurse gifted this to me when I gave birth to my daughter two months ago and I have been having such a great memory in thinking back on the fun of reading it before and my son just loves it. He repeats words here and there and has me read it over and over.

This truly is a cute book, very silly and the quick song is fun. This book is well loved and often reached for. We are fans of Sandra Boynton in our family. Only one book of many has been not so cared for.

One of our youngsters said, "Oh boy, wow!" when we first read this book. It is clearly a great favorite among our little people and some of our big people as well. It is very clever and cute. I like Sandra Boynton's books for children very much. I also like board books such as this one very much, too, as they stand the test of time and wear - not to mention tear. They don't tear and that is another positive aspect of these books. They last through several children and that is the best thing of all. Hooray for Belly Button Book and for Sandra Boynton as well.

This is delightful and entertaining. My granddaughter wants 'Graybe" to read it AGAIN so it must be enjoyable. Nothing like the animals having a good time and she gets to make sounds too! Before long, she has it memorized.

I bought this for my 15 month old granddaughter whose favorite things are books. I also bought two other books by this author. My granddaughter ignores them all and moves away to some other activity when I try to read them with her. Maybe its because they are not colorful and the drawings don't connect with her. Perhaps these are good for older children.

I generally judge rhyming stories and board books fairly harshly. Too often authors think that incorporating rhyme automatically makes a book good, or that writing for babies is easy. Sandra Boyton's "Barnyard Dance," a board book targeting babies and toddlers, is exceptional, however.

Boyton's story has a cadence that captivates even the youngest audience and that flows easily off the reader's tongue. Essentially it is a square-dance. And not only do the animals in the story follow the riveting directives of the square-dance "caller," participating with movement, so too can some young toddlers. Even small babies who can't understand the words can still appreciate the animals sounds and rhythm of this book. As a nanny I read "Barnyard Dance" over and over to a 3-7 month old girl, and not only did she never grow tired of hearing it read aloud, neither did I.

This is another in a series of fun little books to delight. The animals have a square dance, replete with rhyme. The illustrations, as always, are realistic enough yet still imaginative. Like many things in life, even for young ones, sometimes its fascinating, and sometimes not. My daughter loves this book when Granny reads it to her, and sometimes she pages through it herself, telling whoever is about what the animals are doing. After a few months, however, she began to pass it by in favor of other choices. She prefers the Going To Bed Book, also by Boynton. Still, I think this is a cute rhyme, and many kids will like it. If they've ever been to a real square dance, this would probably be a welcome read.

I have enjoyed every Sandra Boynton book I've read- the pictures are excellent, the words rhyme and flow smoothly, there is always a good story/plot- and this book is not an exception. This book describes a dance step-by-step; exactly like a caller for a dance. The words really seem to make the book come alive. They have a beat and almost sound like music when read out-loud. The words rhyme, but one almost doesn't realize it because by that time they are borne onward by the wonderful tide of words. Like always, the pictures are excellent as well. As you may have realized, I really like this book and believe it is one of Boynton's best.

High energy and nice rhymes. Read it to my 8 months old once or twice and instantly became her favorite book. Not sure if she likes the designs or just the sound of the rhymes, she always chooses the Barnyard Dance over the other choices. As parents, we like reading this to her too. Highly recommended!

We got this book as a gift and read it to my baby since 3,4 months old. Very cute and easy to read. Also "Bee bo" and "Boon" became regular terms we use at home now. At 9 months my baby learned to find the belly button, and I'm giving the credit to the Belly Buttons book ;)

Sandra Boynton, Barnyard Dance! (Workman Publishing, 1993)

More fun, musically-inclined Boynton, though there's a piece or two of this where the rhythm is such that you might not get it on the first try unless you're familiar with the two-step--might want to give it a quick read-over yourself before launching into it with the kiddies. But like everything Boynton puts out, it's fun, engaging, stands up to repeated readings, and you'll enjoy it as much as the kids do. *** ½

The Lap Edition of this book is rather large. Check the dimensions of your purchase to see if you are getting the large, lap edition or the standard board book size.

As for the story, it's pretty cute. And silly as all Boynton's are. I love the onomatopoeia's that are dispersed through out. I prefer Oh My Oh My Oh Dinosaurs and But Not the Hippopotamus. This one is probably more fun to read when you have an older toddler who is discovering body parts (and which ones are hidden for most of the day).

I bought this book for my son when he was about 18 months. He loved it to pieces, literally. By the time his sister came around 3 years later, it had long since been thrown away. I started by getting her some of the other Susan Boynton books. (Birthday Monsters and Pajama Time.) She liked them. But when I got her the Belly Button Book, she reacted the same way her brother had. I was somewhat surprised to read some of the negative reviews on the store. Someone wrote that the rhymes didn't flow properly. I disagree. Perhaps some people are thinking a little to much. It's a toddler's book for Pete's sake!

I figured I'd review this even though it is overwhelmingly popular already. My granddaughter loves this book! She's just getting to the stage of being anxious when mommy and daddy leave for an evening out and reading this book puts her right back in a good frame of mind. At 10 months, she already tries to "cheep, cheep, cheep" along with the chickens. It's sooooo cute! I'm online now, buying more Boynton board books!

Great cadence that keeps our 14 month old's attention and results in a request to read it again...and again...and again. That's fine by us - we'd much rather have that problem vs. her not wanting to read! My only small complaint is that in some places, it might be difficult for our child to assign the animal sounds to the correct animal on the page (this may be an age thing) so I have to say, for example "With an Oink and a Moo and a Quack Quack Quack" there are more animals on the page than a pig, cow and duck so I add a parentheses while I'm reading "With an Oink (because that's a pig) and a Moo (because that's a cow) and a Quack Quack Quack (because that's a duck)". Otherwise, we LOVE this book. Great writing, great art, and we actually enjoy reading it as parents (can't say that for all of the kids books out there - how did some of them get by a publisher?)

This is my FAVORITE Boynton book! It is just plain SILLY; square dancing with farm animals. Indelibly endearing, the characters come alive when the fiddle-playing cow begins to sing, "Bow to the horse. Bow to the cow. Twirl with the pig if you know how." The rhythm is so musical, it's addictive, and GREAT fun to read aloud, or sing as in my case. "Prance with the horses, skitter with the mice. Swing with your partner once or twice." Simple, silly, animation; your baby will love this funny, little, board book! As an education tool, children will learn to recognize farm animals, and associate simple verbs to the action, such as bow, bounce, swing, and leap. WARNING: Barnyard Dance! may cause dancing, and the reader may develop a musical twang. Birth and up.

I've been a fan of Sandra Boynton since the late 1970s. I was delighted to discover that she has written this extensive array of wonderful children's books. My son (now 14 months old - we've been reading this one for about 7 months) loves this one in particular. The cut-out front is fun to stick little fingers through, and the illustrations and rhythm of the text are fun to read and to listen to. He sometimes gets up and dances! He will pull this book out from among a pile of others when asked what he wants to read. You have to see the animals to appreciate Sandra Boynton's genius - the look on the face of the hen being 'swung by [her] partner' is hilarious.

Sandra Boyntons books have become favorites in our house for our 2 1/2 year old. Barnyard Dance is another hit. This, like her other books have their trademark hilarious and silly illustrations as barnyard animals big and small dance about as a cow plays a fiddle. Accompanying the colorful and lively illustrations is sandra's witty and whimsical rhymes. Cows, ducks, chickens, pigs, horses, sheep...all singing and dancing about. Kids just get a big kick out of all of it. Great fun and fun to read.

This is one of those very sturdy board books that will stand up to any abuse your young one can throw at it. Another winner from Sandra!

My 1 year old daughter received this as a gift from her grandparents when she was born. Over the past few months, she has really taken a liking to it. When I take it off of the bookshelf to read it to her, she smiles and starts clapping! Anything that makes my daughter happy, makes me happy! "Stomp your feet, clap your hands. Everybody get ready for the barnyard dance!"

You call this a children's book? Aside from the massive jumps in grammatical comprehension, this is riddled with plot wholes and dead end tangents. Absolutely zero character development, honestly. I didn't connect with any character in this book, let alone the mice and frog who are just written in clearly to fill space in the story. This book should called 'how to write a bad ending 101' because the last two pages are disappointing and tacked on in a desperate attempt to zip together a failed attempt at a plot.

Just kidding it is good.

I just bought this book for my 15-month old son. Coming from a farm background myself, I want him to be able to name farm animals even though we live in a city. This book is so much fun to read because of it's square dancing theme. It's a very fast reading book when you get into the rhythm of it. My son always points out the cow and the donkey, and loves to "Cheep, cheep, cheep".
I was pleasantly surprised with the illustrations and writing of this book. I am definitely going to get a couple more of Boyton's book for my son.

This was one of my favorite books as a child, I still have memories of my grandmother reading it to me at night. We received Barnyard Dance as a gift for my new twin granddaughters. It was the first Sandra Boynton book I had seen and I was entranced. We have read the book literally hundreds of times over the past 18 months. Like many of Boynton's board books, they totally capture and captivate toddlers. I love Boynton's lively sense of the ridiculous, the whimsical illustrations of the animals and the way the reader can almost hear the music. This book had me back online looking for more! We have eight or nine now and all of them are 'favorites'. I would recommend this one for anyone with toddlers to entertain, as her books are surely the first step towards a lifetime relationship with the written word and all the pleasures and rewards that will bring.

This made our list of top 10 books of 2013 where my son is 1-2 years old. He loves this book and always asks for it at bedtime. It cracks me up because he'll suddenly say "bee boo!" (name for belly button) if we flash him some belly button, but he can also say "belly button" too because he hears it so much in the book. He likes to point to all the funny hippos and name things in the pictures. I think the artwork is good because it's not too busy and he's sort of distractible... I don't think he sees as much in the books with a lot more busy art. It is very catchy and rhymes.

The Sandra Boynton books, including this one, were a favorite of our kids and with good reason. The pictures capture their attention, the words allows the reader to get expressive, and the rythm of the words provide a very familiar sound for the child. As our kids grew older, they were able to talk along with the book by using the picture cues and from memorizing the words that have been read to them.

If you're looking for a set of books for a gift or for your own children, it's hard to go wrong with Barnyard Dance and others, like The Going-To-Bed Book,Moo Baa La La La,But Not the Hippopotamus (Boynton on Board), and Pajama Time!.

I bought this for my (now 17 month old) little girl when she was just a couple weeks old. As a newborn she probably just loved hearing her mommy's voice and hearing the rhyme. I've learned rhyming is very good for babies and language development. But as a newborn, it was a book I had fun reading to her.

At two months of age Grandma commented on how baby would quiet down and look intently during this particular book. Even at that young age, it was noticeably her favorite. As soon as she learned to scoot, she would grab this book out of her little pile of books and EAT IT! This thing literally has a hole in it now where she gummed through. It was always funny to me because she didn't eat her other books.

So now she has long since gnawing on this book (by now there would probably be none of it left!) But she still seems to love it. I'm not sure its her favorite anymore. She doesn't bring this over to me to read to her that much, probably because she has so many books now. Still, every time I read it to her its guaranteed giggles and smiles and she likes to make the animal sounds along with the story.

I loved the other reviewer who said his wife taught his little guy to do the dance and he does it while the story is being read. That is such a cute idea. I will have to try it.

I have had this book for some time now, and both my children LOVE it! I read this book to my daughter as a toddler, and now I am reading it to her brother who is two. They love the rhythm of the words, and the adorable critters.

Aside from the HUGE rhythmic and visual value, this book has assisted in teaching my children about animals, and the sounds they make. Nothing beats a book that is extremely fun and enjoyable to read, but also has educational value. This is a must for every home library! I am 31, and I love this book for myself! Which makes it sooo easy to read to the kids at night after a long day! LOL!

I would HIGHLY recommend any book from Sandra Boynton. I can't even count how many of her books we now own, and this was the very first book I bought from her!

Another winner from Sandra Boynton! This wonderful book combines her classic, adorable animal characters with square dance-like commands to make it a participatory activity. Even the youngest of toddlers should be able to follow the simple instructions such as "bow to the horse - bow to the cow." As they get older, they will love repeating the fun sound effects as well, from "cheep cheep cheep!" to "quack quack quack!" Of course, each stanza also rhymes beautifully, further delighting the little ones and making it a joy to read for parents. When my niece was about 20 months old, she never tired of hearing this book and doing the dance--there was nothing cuter than seeing her do her little bow to start it off! This book will provide hours of fun for both the kids AND the adults--highly recommended!

This book is SO, SO fun to read with toddlers, who tend to love their "bee-bos" just like the hippos in this adorable board book. My kids like this book so much that their default term for bellybutton is now "bee-bo." (Yes, even the big kid.) We've had to explain why to other kids and parents...who then go and read _The Belly Button Book_ and recommend it to more friends.

On the other hand, if your kids no longer toddlers, you'll probably think this book is a waste of time.

Too bad for you. But maybe you'll eventually get grandkids to read it to...or you can borrow a niece or nephew...

I assume this was originally written as a vanity piece or gift to someone whose child once uttered the words "bee bo" because it reads like half of an idea rushed onto paper with a few hastily thrown in pages in order to meet minimum length. Insipid and pointless, this one is definitely worth skipping.

PS - Boynton, thanks for including an unsingable 2 line "song" so that it's both dull and difficult to read to a child.

This is a fun book to read.
I look for books that have simple pictures that help tell the story. (I believe sometimes the pictures in childrens' books get too distracting with too many things going on.) I look for books that have bright colors that keep my child interested in the pages. I look for books that we can do more than just read the book.
This book fits all those catagories. This pictures are simple and yet exciting enough that the keep my child's attention. We like to try to act out the dance the animals are doing after we have read the book. Sometimes we sing this book to a country music type of tune. The rythm of this book makes it a lot of fun to read. We are able to count the animals, make the sounds the animals make and in general have a great time with this book.
All of the books by Boynton are fun. However, this is among my son's favorite books.
