As much as I've been looking forward to this book, I barely made myself finish it. I think this may have been my least favorite book in the series. After DNFing the previous book in the series, I had really high hopes for this one, so maybe I just set them too high?

The setup is interesting; NSA Agent Joaquin Muñoz agent trying to save the long, lost daughter of a murdered Russian scientist that may just hold the secrets to the life altering genetic discovery he made right before his death. After a recent string of murders point toward the killers seeking her out as well as his best friend's murder after investigating these deaths, Joaquin decides to basically stalk and then kidnap the woman he believes to be the one the killers are after. Just one problem, she doesn't believe him about her past. She doesn't have any memories, but she does have some vivid dreams of a girl that just may be her. So what's a guy to do? Take her to the safest place he can imagine, Club Dominion of course.

Unfortunately, this is also exactly where the book began to take a downhill turn. For those that may not remember Joaquin, he's Kata's brother from Surrender to Me. After losing his father at a young age he's never been the same. It's caused him to completely detach himself from feeling anything, including his family. I have to say I found a hard time connecting to something this extreme. The man has basically avoided anything to do with his family for years, even though all of them make more than numerous attempts to reach out to him.

The chemistry between Joaquin and Bailey was lackluster at best. Bailey is not a submissive but has the makings of one, and Joaquin is not a trained Dom, but has the urges of one. Enter Club Dominion and some kinky fuckery and BAM there's spankings and feelings are involved.

Their connection seemed to be the stuff of BDSM stockholm syndrome. I just couldn't connect to it for the life of me. They go from strangers to screwing in just a matter of days. The entire book basically circles around the suspense plot, which while somewhat interesting, never really grabbed me either.

Will I read the next book in the series? Probably. Though I don't think I'll be rushing to read it as soon as it releases.

Marie's Tempting Reads ARC Review:

What can I say about His To Take by Shayla Black? First off, other than being wickedly delicious and filled with suspense and the sensual BDSM we enjoy from Miss Black's Wicked Lover books is that the characters are a bit different compared to previous characters in this series. However, I am NOT saying this is in anyway a bad thing, in fact I found the characters beyond likable and may well be my new favorites in the series. We got the sexy yet stern, Joaquin who wants to save another woman from getting tortured and killed like his friend had. He risks EVERYTHING, including his job to protect Bailey the sweet and seductive ballerina who is the next target from the horrendous bad guys that are after her for secrets she doesn't quite remember. After taking her to Club Dominion, things get heated between captor and captive and they both learn a few things about themselves that they didn't realize were inside them the whole time.
I loved how intricate and well woven His To Take was. It had the perfect blend of suspense and romance. The love scenes were both sensual and deliciously erotic. I LOVED how we got not one, but TWO characters new to BDSM. Luckily we have some previous Wicked Lover characters that both guide and teach the newbies what they need to know. I was also amazed because both characters have great instincts when it comes to BDSM play but neither one has any issues taking some guidance from others to make sure everything is safe and pleasurable.
I really liked Bailey. She is a wonderfully talented ballerina with a body I envy. She is also a sweet submissive. She just doesn't realize it until arriving and exploring the popular BDSM club she is being kept in. Now Joaquin is a very stern man. He also happens to be a Dom. It takes him experiencing feelings and instincts he never thought he had, until Bailey came into his life. After talking things out with the club's owner, he starts to realize himself, that he always liked the control in the bedroom but he never gave much thought to it until Bailey shows her almost bratty and fiery side. This is when things heat up and become more then a job to Joaquin.
Sex between Bailey and Joaquin are inspiring, sexy, and oh so good as they both explore the different dynamics in BDSM. Not only do we get this sinfully addicting romance, but when danger gets closer, the action intensifies and the suspense becomes edgy, just the way I enjoy these books!
His To Take was SO GOOD that I had to make sure I gave it the rating it deserved. I thought this story was well written with some sexy as sin scenes and a edgy storyline that giving this story ANYTHING less than a FIVE SHOOTING STARS was impossible! His To Take was worth EVERY. SINGLE. STAR. I gave it. Bottom line. This book was sincerely good and I enjoyed reading every page! Well done Miss Black. Well done.

I love this series. In this book we get to meet Kata's brother Joachim. He is hot, but has no idea about BDSM and no idea he's a Dom. I wish there had been more with Thorpe and Sean "training" him. Bailey was a sweetheart and "virgin" to all things Club Dominance. They had great chemistry, and there was a seriously disturbed bad guy running around.

The only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 3 is because we got to see LOTS of all the old crew. And I do mean lots and I do mean all, plus lots of babies and pregnant women.

Next book is Alex, and I can't wait. I've been wanting his book for awhile.

How can you not love a book by Shayla Black!!!!? You CAN'T!
His to Take is so very, very good. Joaquin and Bailey's story is one huge roller coaster of emotion, danger, secrets and love and it all starts with a kidnapping! Bailey's life is thrown into a tailspin with nightmares and lies - she isn't who she's always thought she was and the one person who has the answers, has demons of his own. Their journey for the truth opens their eyes, hearts and souls to one another and the family that surrounds them. Truths will be told, desires will come alive and love will take a hold of them that nothing can stop.
This book is just awesome, plus we get the bonus of seeing old friends from earlier books!
Congratulations Shayla!

3.75 stars--HIS TO TAKE is the ninth full length installment in Shayla Black’s adult, contemporary Wicked Lovers erotic, romance series focusing on a close knit group of friends, family and formers SEALs, FBI and NSA agents who partake in the BDSM life style. This is NSA Agent Joaquin Munoz and ballet dancer Bailey Benson’s storyline. Although HIS TO TAKE is the ninth book in the series, it can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty as can most of the books in this series.

Told from alternating third person points of view the storyline focuses on the search for a missing woman who disappeared twenty years earlier and is presumed dead at the hands of a terrorist cell searching for information into DNA manipulation. With what appears to be a serial killer on the hunt for all women who fit the missing female’s description, NSA Agent Joaquin Munoz disobeys the direct orders of his superiors and sets out on his own to save a woman the others believe holds the secrets to a two decades old mystery. When Bailey Benson’s profile matches all of the previous victim’s profiles, Joaquin easily locates and abducts Bailey then hides her away at Club Dominion-the BDSM club owned by Mitchell Thorpe (Theirs to Cherish #8).

The premise finds Joaquin immediately attracted to Bailey but our hero is a man who does not do relationships; does not fall in love; and has had very little contact with anyone in years. His reaction to Bailey is visceral but I didn’t quite buy into Joaquin’s growing love. He is an NSA agent whose life has been spent rescuing others and hunting terrorists. Their time spent at Club Dominion finds our hero needing to ‘spank’ Bailey for her lack of self preservation and in this the storyline takes a rather unwelcome turn for this reader. Neither Bailey nor Joaquin had ever considered the BDSM lifestyle but in the presence of the others, both have a need to partake of the action. This particular aspect of the storyline felt awkward, contrived and unnecessary, and frankly not believable. It was short lived and not without some cringe worthy moments especially when both were acting on the advice from the professional BDSM members. Joaquin’s need to punish Bailey does not sit well with the others-there is no role playing or Dom/sub action, it is purely punishment for disobeying orders.

Most, if not all, of the previous storyline couples and lovers play a secondary or supporting role as many favors are called in to help with the investigation into the number of deaths and the people hunting for Bailey Benson. Callie, Sean and Thorpe (Theirs to Cherish) prepare for their upcoming wedding and by way of a storyline role or mention, the extended and ensemble cast of characters makes for an interesting few days in isolation for Baily and Joaquin. It was nice revisiting with previous couples, lovers and their growing extended families.

The sexual situations include some BDSM, some spanking and punishment-not only for our leading couple but as part of Club Dominion’s available assets. Most of the BDSM content is voyeuristic as we are pulled into the needs of the heroes, from the previous storylines, to punish their lovers for a perceived act of betrayal or disobedience-again, these actions felt a little gratuitous and unnecessary to the overall plot. I understand that WICKED LOVERS is a series whereby all of our heroes and heroines partake in the BDSM lifestyle, but Bailey and Joaquin were completely out of their element and uncomfortable with what needed to be done.

HIS TO TAKE is a fast paced, intense and intriguing storyline. Shayla Black combines mystery and suspense, with a little bit of erotic imagery to stimulate the senses and need to read on. Revisiting old friends and previous storyline characters was a welcome addition to HIS TO TAKE. I am looking forward to many more storylines in the Wicked Lovers series.

I was one to anticipate *dancing in place* His to Take, something about the cover, the synopsis...just screams READ me. It's helps that I'm a fan of the Wicked Lovers series as well.

His to Take (Wicked Lovers #9), I feel can be read as a standalone but always better read in a series as characters from the previous books do make an appearance.

This story is about an agent Joaquin and the counterpart Bailey. Instantly, we are gravitated towards action, the plot draws you right in and I was hooked right away.

I was leery about the story initially thinking to myself, with the way the two characters unusual circumstances and meeting can they really build any sort of relationship from a non-threatening standpoint, never mind form anything romantic.

I love that Joaquin has this strong code of ethics, Bailey ends up being his mission and his main priority is to keep her safe. In the process, I discover this strong alpha male type character has a Dominant in him that's lying dormant that only appears where Bailey is concerned. Reading how he develops as a man, dominant, and battle his inner demons that may potentially cause him to stop pushing others away to protect himself is at times frustrating but as a reader you understand his thoughts and how he battles with himself to prevent the pain that may potentially ruin him and the one person that may "save" him, that could be his cure is the one person he wants to push away but is constantly drawn to Bailey.

Bailey's history is so traumatic and as a reader, I'm able to visualize what she's seen, the panic, the nightmares, to the love, passion, and determination. As a reader, to be able to feel the emotions of her pain, from her nightmares and for each "missing" piece to fall into place to create the bigger picture, seems to make things worse for her. It's when she's out of those nightmares, when she looks around is when she feels like she has a "family"...temporarily, with circumstances the way they are and unconventional means, once everything is over, what happens when reality kicks in?

With the way these two characters battle their demons, enemies that are hunting for them while they are on the run, It's amazing how they come together and really do seem stronger together than apart.

The story captures the attention of the reader from the first page, not wanting to close the book till the story is complete. On the edge action, suspense, thriller, romance...it's all here. Was not at all predictable and keeps the reader on the edge where you can visualize the entire plot...even the sinful way that Joaquin claims Bailey in something as "simple" with his all giving demanding passionate kisses...never mind the sex...it gets hotter...a few cold showers may be needed when reading His to Take.

I must bow to the greatness that is Shayla Black! His to Take the 9th book in the Wicked Lovers series is one of my favorites of the series. Shayla pulled me into the book from the start and there was no turning back and no sleep until the book was devoured. She pulls you into the world by updating you on previous characters and couples lives who you have grown to love if you are a follower of this series. The world of Wicked Lovers comes alive as she keeps all the amazing characters to life by showing you how their lives have changed and progressed since last reading about them. This book is thrilling and you FINALLY get to meet the elusive Joaquin Munoz and introduced to Baily Benson a beautiful ballerina who captivates your heart with her strength, her courage, her talent and her beauty.

Joaquin has a good heart but starts out on the wrong foot with Bailey. To save her life and keep everyone they know that is involved safe is an adventure and page turner in itself. You can’t help but want to throttle Joaquin and tell him what an idiot he is and several times I had odd looks from friends or family as I am griping about how Joaquin is being an idiot. I did not feel like I was reading this book I felt like I was in the world of the Wicked Lovers and couldn’t stop reading because I had to know what was going to happen. I loved that the Club Dominion and the characters from there are back and you are also included in how they have been doing and what is in store for them as well.

I was completely absorbed by this book it was so well written that I cried, laughed and shared in the happiness of the characters as well as their fears. I would sometimes even forget that I was reading a fictional book and was feared for those that I loved. This book has a great plot that continues to unravel and engage you. The only complaint that I can say is that I was sad when I finished the book. I wasn’t ready to leave the Wicked Lovers world that Shayla Black has so vividly brought to life!

HIS TO TAKE by Shayla Black is another deliciously wicked and dangerous installment to the amazing Wicked Lovers series. This is an enticing romance about a man on a mission to uncover the truth and the woman he craves to protect. In Ms. Black's books were are used a seasoned Dominant trying to tame his submissive. With HIS TO TAKE, we take a turn and follow a man who yearns to explore the dominant side of himself with the woman who brings out all of his protective instincts. It's a nice change of pace and I enjoyed the journey immensely.

Boundaries are pushed, steamy sex scenes are taken up a notch, and the suspenseful thrill ride that this takes you on, is delightfully entertaining. In most of the books in this series, it takes me no time to fall in love with the characters. But in HIS TO TAKE, Joaquin and Bailey have to work for it a little more. I didn't have that instant connection that I'm so used to. This author has never let me down before, and I just knew it would be only a matter of time, where there would be some turning point in the story, and then my heart would soar for these two. And that is exactly what happened here. These characters brought out each other's strengths and banished their weaknesses. They grew independently and grew as a couple, breaking down wall after wall to finally reach one another's hearts. This is where Shayla Black is a genius with her words. She sucks you in with all the emotion pouring out of the pages. It gets you right in the gut. She breaks your heart and then mends it, leaving you in a state of bliss.

What I absolutely LOVED the most, was having all of the past characters back together. They have become a family to me, and they definitely own a piece of my heart.

Don't be fooled by the 4 STAR rating for HIS TO TAKE. This was a fantastic read for sure and Shayla Black owns this genre in my book!

I am a huge Shayla Black fan. I love her stories. I have the collection of the Wicked Lovers series, and they are all AWESOME!!! She sucks me into her books everytime and I just read, and read, and read until I finish. Yes, they are that good to me. I love how charaters from her other books reappear in the new stories. Joaquin was mentioned in a previous book and they took his story from there, he needed love and thats what he found in Bailey. Bailey just needed someone period. She impacted his life as much as he impacted hers. They are a great match for one another because in some way they were missing what each other had to give. I am looking forward to the next story in this series.

Some how, some way, Shayla Black has done it again! From the very first page of this book, Mrs. Black pulls you in with action, mystery, and ultimately a love story. We have not seen much of Joaquin in the previous books and the reason is revealed in this book! If you can feel everything for one character- from dislike to adoration- you will feel them for Joaquin. To be honest, I was not a fan of Joaquin throughout most of the book. He is selfish and hard. However, if ever there was a character to redeem himself, Joaquin is it. As if you needed more emotion, Bailey's story will make you rage with anger and cry tears of anguish. The two of them are frustrating and endearing. Don't worry- as with the other Wicked Lovers books- there is some steamy hot romance and BDSM is definitely involved!

I love that we get to visit our Wicked Lover's friends in this book. I do recommend reading the other Wicked Lover's books before reading this one. It's not a requirement, but I feel like the reader will be more connected to the story if he/she has read the other Wicked Lover's books first. I encourage you to run- not walk- to read this book. I devoured the book in about 2 days because it was just THAT GOOD! You will not be disappointed!

This is a great book full of suspense. It is riveting! It is a fast paced page turner. I love Shayla Black books. It is a great addition to the Wicked Lovers series.
Joaquin and Bailey have great chemistry. I liked that they go to the Dominion Club to find protection. The characters from the series include them as family. They all work very well together. I like that even though Dominion is a BDSM club this book has very little BDSM. So if you don't like that you can still enjoy this book.
*** I was given this book as a gift from the author in exchange for my honest review. ****

His to Take was just the perfect combo of sexy, dangerous and a little fun that got off to quite the start...as Joaquin kidnapped Bailey. To save her of course :D Her life is in the crosshairs of a group of extremists searching for lost scientific documents they're certain she knows how to find and they're willing to torture and murder to get them.

I really enjoyed Bailey. She's a strong heroine that had a crazy ton of insanity placed at her feet and while she had some very understandable freak outs as a past she has no recollection of is unveiled she rolled with the punches, did what had to be done and powered through every heartbreaking and devastating discovery about her past. And Joaquin--even with the whole kidnapping bit--was a sexy hero. Gotta love a man who is willing to give up everything in his life to protect and avenge others even when he doesn't know them.

They had some nice heat together and fit well together. Seeing through each other's loneliness, pain and desires. It was very interesting having neither one of them personally involved in the BDSM community but at the same time curious about it and because of his connections getting some first hand experience seeing it in front of them. They had some mishaps, some confusion--both individually and as a couple--trying to work through their feelings and curiosity but in the end it worked and was hot and sexy. Nothing too out there this time. There's some spanking and a very small amount of bondage. Other than that it's fairly vanilla.

My only real complaint was the horrible lack of condoms. After knowing each other two days these two were skipping the birth control in every way possible. Totally squicks me out and really took me out of the story.

The danger and threat was gritty and gruesome. I enjoyed watching Bailey's story unfold and her slowly getting bits and pieces of the past back. Figuring out how things related to the men after her and what they were searching for and how to find the truth from all the years past. It was painful and hurt watching her remember and deal with the horrors of her childhood and all the things she'd lost because of it. There's some nail biting moments, a couple ahh what were you thinking?! ones and in the end a pretty satisfying conclusion to it all.

Overall, an exciting and entertaining read. It wasn't perfect but it was a good time and a fabulous way to heat up a cold Winter day.

I'm afraid I was very disappointed with this title; I have enjoyed others in the series, but Shayla Black seems to have run out of plot engines: this is at least the fourth time she's used the "heroine in danger" plot. And again, we're treated to a smart, ambitious, strong heroine who is immediately reduced to complete incompetence, and a hero who, in his drive to protect her, only bullies her. I didn't buy Bailey as a ballerina for a minute (I'm a dancer and she doesn't act like any dancer I know). I didn't buy the chemistry between her and Joaquin, either. Shayla can write complex, fully emotionally developed characters, and what we get here is a woman who apparently thinks that because a man is hot, that he can't possibly be an abusive creep (which is how Joaquin comes across to me). And he decides that he *loves* her, when as any trained professional in intelligence, military, or law enforcement knows, is *irrelevant*. His job is to protect her, and he can't do that if he's in the room with her making moves on her. (These are the same problems I had with Wicked Ties, btw.)

Blacks fall back on "telling, not showing" the relationship developing: she *tells* us that Joaquin feels tender and protective and adoring towards Bailey, but what he *says* to her is crude and demeaning. Bailey is making legitimate arguments about her treatment, and he ignores them. This does not bode well, IMHO. In any relationship, vanilla or not, communication is key. In BDSM, with its increased and focused intensity, it is crucial. And our characters never talk. He never makes any attempt to learn her desires, her limits, her needs. She is totally vulnerable to him, and NOT by her own choice, and he takes full advantage of the situation. In my book, he ain't no hero.

Being kept in Club Dominion gave me some hope that Thorpe would ensure Joaquin would follow the rules for behavior in the club, but Joaquin seems to lack even common courtesy and decency. I had hoped that Thorpe and Callie would put their feet down and make sure Bailey was not only safe, but adequately cared for and informed about her situation.

The emotional arc of this title came across as little more than an explicit Barbara Cartland: silly brainless girl and Powerful Brooding Man meet, and at first sight, she is His. All other plot action is window dressing. I was hoping for more, and was disappointed.

Shayla Black knows how to write. Although this one has few sex scenes then previous story you don't notice until you have finished the book. The story grabs you from the first paragraph and doesn't let up until the end. The grief these two people go through different but still the same is unique and complicated. The love they share is this only way for them to heal. I highly recommend this story.

Shayla Black keeps the HOT WICKED LOVE right on coming. His To Take is a STEAMY, emotional, passionate story that will suck you in and not let go until the very last page. The revelations Bailey is forced to face made me cry. I can’t even imagine the shock and despair she had to work through. Joaquin the tough as nails Security agent who suspects Bailey as the woman he’s been trying to find, risks it all to save her. Carrying so much baggage, he too struggles to rise above his own demons. What makes this story so amazing is the strength these two people share, not only individually, but together. For those who have loved and lost and have been brave enough to find love again, this story is for you.

I loved this and I haven't read a really really good SB in a while, so I am very happy. Both the h and H were exactly what I was in the mood to read about, the suspense part of the book did not take over the romance in this one and that made me even happier to read this book. I liked that the BDSM aspect was also downplayed in this book, it would not have fit for either MC and would have seemed contrived if it had been included. I

His to take was a wonderful read. I really loved this book. Joaquin was a man on a mission and there was no stopping him. I really enjoyed his character. Even though he has closed his self of from family and friends because of a death a long time ago. I think it makes his character better. Especially when the light bulb goes off in his head and he opens up. Men always hardheaded. Bailey she was great. I just loved her. I loved her attitude, dancing and just her personality. I really enjoyed them together. I do wish we could have seen what happens with them a couple months later. So many things I question. Did they find what her dad left her on that disc after the place blew up. I am hoping it made it past the blast somehow. Lol . I wonder if there was a message on it from her dad? Do we have a baby? I am sure we will see them in the next book so maybe we will find more things out with them. This was a great read. I really enjoyed it and can't wait for more. When a man kidnaps a woman, takes her to a violent sex club, where he beats and rapes her, a serious crime has been committed. Normally, the FBI would hunt down the sexual predator and hopefully put the dirt bag in prison.

Ironically, in this sadistic story, the kidnapper is a FBI agent (Joaquin) who is just "protecting" Bailey. Sadly, the owners and employees of the BDSM club all assisted the "agent" in terrorizing and and torturing Bailey - evidently women don't have any civil or human rights in "the lifestyle".

It's scary when this type of book is listed as a romance; I doubt that most victims of sexual assault found the experience erotic or romantic. It is particularly disturbing when female writers promote sexual violence as acceptable behavior.

I loved the new twist in an old favorite series! Joaquin and Bailey were a wonderful couple. I so enjoyed seeing old character favorites. Shayla Black just keeps getting better and better! I can't wait for the next book!

When you get to book 9 in a series if your like me you are usually ready to move on but leave it to Shayla Black to keep it interesting, steamy, and well just crazy intense enough to keep you waiting impatiently for book 10!
