Amy shares her vulnerability and the steps she took to overcome tremendous challenges in her life. As I read through many of the things on the list I find myself nodding my head over and over as I can identify so closely with much of what she says.

The book includes tips and ideas for overcoming habits that might be holding you back. I was honored to interview Amy on our podcast and find her very authentic and passionate about her work.

I love self-improvement books and have read many. Given the hundreds of reviews this one has and based on the sample I read, I bought and was glad I did. However, for me, this is very 101 information mostly. Someone new to this kind of book no doubt would find a lot here helpful. But if you've read and learned from Marianne Williamson, Wayne Dyer, Shirley MacClaine, and Sharon Salzburg, among other wonderful authors, you probably won't find 13 Things as powerful as someone of the customers have pointed out. In fact, I skipped the last two chapters, They Don't Feel the World Owes Them Anything and They Don't Expect Immediate Results, because I've never felt this way ever and certainly don't need at age 50 to have this driven home for me. This is what I mean by people who are looking for a more basic self-help guide. Perhaps these are unresolved issues for them and so this book might be an important resource.

This is an interesting approach to providing steps to being productive, creative and consistently working toward your goals. The method used is to tell you what "NOT" to do (this must be annoying to "Remember the Ice" author Bob Nicoll) but by definition by reading stories about what NOT to do you clearly receive best practices for what to avoid and action steps to achieve your goals.

Very easy read and stories to illustrate what the author is writing about. A lot of good stuff to assist in making one mentally strong. This will be a book I will go back to to refresh myself on the concepts taught by the author.

Excellent read. I am recommending it to many of my patients. They also have nothing but positive things to say about it. And a big thank-you to the author for not dissing mental illness. She makes it clear in the opening of this book, that you can be mentally strong while having a mental health diagnosis. Great Read!!!

I managed to slog through to #8 before the chapter title '[Mentally Strong People] Don't Make The Same Mistakes Over and Over' finally brought me to a stop. If you suffer from mental illness, PTSD from childhood abuse, and/or systemic oppression, this book will trigger you. The author makes vague statements about getting therapy and cutting contact with abusers, but spends the rest of the time victim-blaming and telling questionable anecdotes about parents and children. There are valuable tidbits, but they're not worth excavation from a book that makes everyday human mistakes (especially stemming from disability and illness) feel like capitulation to mental 'weakness'.

As others have said, the ideas here are very basic but definitely not presented well for a beginner in self-help, especially a depressed one. Check out the sites 'Out of the FOG' and 'The Body is not an Apology' for a better start.

After reading the description and introduction in the book, I was very excited about how the author, a trained mental health professional, overcame her own life tragedies and difficulties. Unfortunately, instead of offering research and deep personal insights into how she overcame her own loss and other significant challenges, she uses vague anecdotes about basic clinical problems and examples from historical artists, engineers, businessmen, and even presidents. While there certainly was some helpful information to glean from these famous people, I'm confident there are a number of other self-help or history authors that one could read from to gain just as much or more insight into these people's lives.

In summary, the author failed to provide any meanungful help to normal people enduring some of the most difficult aspects of their lives, a professional life that must go on amidst the loss of treasured loved ones. It's a terrific and practical topic, which is why I bought the book. But now I'm glad I bought it on sale for $2.

This is a really fantastic book written by somebody who has lived through the things they are teaching you. I have studied the topic of personal development for more than 20 years and felt like the author really brought some new perspective and thought to the key elements of what it takes to be mentally strong. If this is a topic you're interested in I highly recommend this book.

I recommend this book for anyone interested in developing or enhancing the qualities of mental strength. Amy Morin offers practical advice which can be used to examine our own thinking and to challenge the limiting thoughts that we sometimes have.
Anyone can use this book to enhance mental strength.

EXCELLENT book!!!! This is very detailed about the authors experience w/ grief...do not be afraid...that is the first several pages, then it takes off and is one of the best books I have read regarding inner strength, how to respond to criticism, not giving up w/ critique's that may not be accurate...w/out fluff like "you are awesome"...it is a very simple, yet intellectual read. Loved it.

This book strikes me really hard (especially on self-awareness vs "entitlement") because it teaches against what some Christian preachers are telling us. Morin tells the truth, no higher power (including Biblical God) promises that life would be fair to you, nor the world owes you anything (nor you do the world any favor by whatever good things that you do since before you were born, the world has already been here), nor that you are so exceptional that you don't have to follow the process that everybody else has to go through. Highly recommended for those who want to develop a higher emotional intelligence.
