A must have in the collection of any serious gardener. I always refer to this book when i have questions regarding my garden. I really like this edition even tho it is missing a section on propagation.

New to a particular location? This book is a must have. This is the second copy I have bought as a gift for friends who have moved west. Everyone has commented on what a valuable reference tool it is.

Personally, I prefer the older editions of Sunset Western Garden Book but this was ordered as a gift for a friend. I assume she is happy with the new format. She was quite pleased to receive the book as a gift!! Prompt delivery and excellent new condition.

Being a landscape architect this is the Bible.. I bought so many of these books, the truth is that after long use, the pages fall apart, at least of the older books. On this edition which I bought last year, pages are holding together better.
good photographs and excellent data.

Nice to see that the actual dividing lines have been corrected for the different zones in Contra Costa County. Easy to select the correct plants and understand the care instructions when you are given the correct information. Thank you Sunset. You actually improved yourself.

I was told that, as a beginning gardener, this was a "must-have" book. It is a beautiful piece of work, no doubt, if you have some knowledge of gardening and plants in general. Because the book takes in so many climate zones, I found it difficult to navigate. I would have preferred a book that sorted plants by climate zones rather than alphabetically. Of course, this would probably make the book too big to handle. The sections that designate good plants for shade, seacoast gardens, slopes, etc., are helpful but too limited. Although the photographs are beautiful, the book, in my opinion, is better suited to someone that has a more extensive knowledge of plans that I do. It will make a nice reference book with the help of a landscaper.

This book was recommended to me by the Master Gardeners of Seattle. It is a great reference book and has been incredibly helpful in learning about what plants might do well in the Pacific Northwest. I highly recommend this book! Everyone should have it in their library.

This newest edition brings more information about plants and gardening throughout the west. I've been using The Western Garden Books for overs sixty years and each new edition something to add to my gardening pleasure and skills.

This book contains a wealth of information I will never need and lists many plants I will never find at my local nursery. But it doesn't address issues well. I had mushrooms on my lawn and some areas just look sad for no apparent reason. Mushrooms don't appear in the index. Lawn doesn't appear in the index. Grass does and it gets just two pages with no tips whatsoever about treating problems with lawns. There are just 2 pages for the general index and 15 pages for you look up the names of various plants. This is not the ultimate gardening guide. It's a reference guide to hundreds of specific plants and a decent reference for choosing what to plant. Just hope it all grows without a problem.

The absolutely best book for Western gardens. It is the benchmark by which all others are measured. It is cited in landscape plans, used to create drought-tolerant landscapes, and relied upon by landscape architects, gardeners, designers, and planners.

What's not to love about this encyclopedic book? An excellent overview of western regional seasons, plants that work in the west, and a good schedule of most common vegetable plants and their calendar needs.

The pictures are outstanding and descriptions and instructions are very helpful. But if you don't know the name of a particular plant or tree, one has to go page by page to find what one is looking for. Good luck. Don't know what the solution is.
