I was really impressed with this book. I thought the author did a great job conveying the anarchy that would take over shortly after an environmental crisis. It does seem like a plausible phenomenon but I felt that it was a little weird that everyone knew what was happening right away. In reality, I'd expect it to take a little longer to sink in. I really liked the characters. Maybe it's just the 'girl' in me but I would have liked a more descriptive transition from friendship to romance. I think there is a big chunk of the story missing there.

I was disappointed that the book was ending because I felt that there was a lot more story to cover. I was happy to learn there is a sequel but think they should have been combined into one book. This could actually be quite a long series, especially if the author decided to share stories from other areas as well. I am very interested to see where it goes and will be watching this author.

I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.

This book started out too slowly but caught my curiosity enough that I read until I had to know what happened. The apocalyptic disaster has a different but possible cause. I like the people and cheered for them. I did not love them. The too long development of their characters made it hard to see them behave as they acted. In fact, it felt as if it was written by different authors. Each part was well written except for typos but that seems to be the norm in this genre. I hope the author(s)? rewrite the beginning for the characters that showed up later. Maybe tell the others story but don't force the characters into the story. It gets a high rating but I am being so critical because it can be so much more!

Well written (but please note, Ms. Shaw, that data and phenomena are plurals; the singulars are datum and phenomenon) end of civilization novel. The event is plausible, as are the characters. Our hero gets shot and wanders into ambushes despite his military background, which makes a pleasant change from some of the invincible protagonists out there! I'm looking forward to the rest of the series and more of Ms. Shaw's novels. It is especially gratifying to find a woman writing in a predominantly male genre.

I've read many apocalyptic novels this year and this is the first that deals with a mini ice age. The science behind it is all too real and that makes it just that much more interesting. The character development is wonderful. The idea of a soldier living by himself in the woods following many years at war is one I can relate to having been around soldiers all my life. The idea of a widow and her son needing help from this man and the fact that her late husband knew him, just adds that much more depth to the overall tale. I so enjoyed this whole story and can't wait for the next installment!

i read this after reading his graham stories. the author didn't disappoint. the crazy guy in the woods was kind of a stretch but he added a little flair. i would have like to have seen a bit more of how he lived. i liked bishop and how he was a bad ass but damages and human. maive was lucky because she seemed a bit weak and overly generous considering . maive most likly would have died or starved to death if if wasnt for her hero. the situation seems like there cant be a happily ever after so im curious how the story will go in part 2. will they again have to break feom the group or will they hold it together and where can they go if its global?

I was surprised how much I enjoyed this short but pleasant read.

Important to me, it was quite a clean read--no inappropriate language. It dealt with the unpleasant threats posed by an apocalyptic scenario in a mature but not smutty manner.

The only shortcoming? It was too short by far! The author's characters are vividly drawn, but I was left wanting to learn even more about them and their experiences in dangerous times.

Part of the pleasure of reading this book was the surprise. I had read, and been disappointed by, another of this author's kindle books. This one was far, far better in every dimension. Glad I gave him another chance, and I'd advise others to do exactly the same.

I experienced this book via Audible.

The Maunder Minimum, a very real phenomenon that is seldom discussed among "climate" groups, is a frightening scenario. Annually, more humans die from cold than from heat. Even a brief, mini ice age could have devastating consequences. I like that Shaw used that as the foundation of this book.

At times heart-breaking and brutal, the thing I think I like most about this work is the female perspective. there are so few female voices in this genre. There should be more. I enjoyed this book very much. I hear a sequel is in the workS and I plan to enjoy that one as well. Shaw's Surrender will be on my list with each new addition.

I enjoyed this book immensely. The characters came alive and seemed so real. A very good read. I'm glad the sequel is out now and I do not have to wait for it. The one thing I disliked and is really not a reflection of the story. It's more personal belief, the female lead is not a strong woman. I don't like her because she is so frail and weak and feels she needs a man. That could very well change, I hope so because she has a long road ahead of her. Thank you Ms Shaw for entertaining me this weekend with a wonderful story.

Finally, a novel about life after the world, as we know it, has come to an end that does not involve zombies trying too eat the remaining survivors! This novel is well written, has believable characters in a believable "end of the world" plot. The author leads the reader through the end of the world without chapter after chapter of repetitive blood and gore. He thrn offers his characters a slight reprieve from the struggle to survive, but does not offer his characters a solution to survival in the ice age they are facing. Shaw left this reader anxiously awaiting the next book in the series...

I purchased the audio version of this book. I have a long commute to work and enjoy audiobooks. I would literally take the long way to destinations to keep listening to this book while in my car. It has great characters that developed throughout the story. I cared what was going to happen to them next. This book was fast paced and very well written. This book could be a stand-alone even though I wanted to know what happens next to the characters. The ending is open-ended and the author is working on the sequel. This author is very talented and I will be reading what she writes next!

Great book with an unusual apocalyptic event - the Maunder Minimum - a mini ice age. Looked it up on Google to see if it is a real future possibility and there are conflicting opinions. Back to the book, I really enjoyed the dialog and the characters are developed. I too was disappointed that book 2 isn't available yet. Can't wait to read it and see what the "cast" does to survive in their new world.

Just one of the possible ends to our beautiful world, as we know it. This book opens your eyes to a natural fact. This world we live in is ever changing. Who knows what the future will bring. But it mostly opens your eyes to the basic principles of mankind. Basic survival , to some at any cost . Sheep, wolves and sheepdogs. Bishop is one of the latter, pushing all to the path of righteous actions and eliminating those who act as wolves.

Enjoyed the first book in this series and look forward to the next one. A couple of bothersome errors just seemed to haunt me the whole time I was reading. Firstly, if the power is off in a remote area there is no way the water is working in the home and the pipes would have frozen in the closed off second floor bathrooms. Second, as an ex-military I would think that the author would know the difference between semiautomatic and full automatic weapons. Semiautomatic rifles are not illegal but full automatics are.

Good storyline without going overboard with unnecessary details.

I liked how main characters didn't just jump into bed together after one act of kindness or traumatic event. We know people are going through a tough time but I'm glad Shaw didn't resort to the message that 'woman needs to whore herself out to man' to survive. This has the making for a real relationships. Or at least I hope so.

Found a few minor mistakes like the female character's pistol changed manufacturer back and forth from a Glock to a Ruger. Didn't affect the storyline at all for me.

Excellent characters and a very plausible event make for an excellent story. Very fast paced compared to how the plot development happened when compared to some other stories. I enjoyed it very much.

Three stars are good without being wonderful. In this near future thriller, a mini ice age is the menacing killer of good and bad alike. A mountain resort town plays host to mob - like thugs, a psychopathic resort manager, burned-out solitary soldiers, and ordinary people. Bad weather brings the various elements together in a bid to garner rapidly dwindling resources for short-term survival. The story provides lots of almost cowboy versus godfather action, and, as such, provides entertainment. The true menace, the glacial cold from which none are safe, never quite takes its place front and center stage. I am waiting for the next installment to learn if the cold of colds lives up to its serious survival threat.

This series takes a different route to the post-dystopian future. Our hero and his crew must deal with an ice age that settles in practically overnight. The premise is somewhat thought provoking, but the speed of the weather change and our hero's ability to cope tend to be somewhat implausible.

Been waiting for this book for awhile, and author AR Shaw delivers! Loved the characters and the action scenes but especially enjoyed the relationship between Maeve and her son, Ben. Great read that gave me chill bumps on a summer night. Highly recommended,

I enjoyed the book and the characters involved in the storyline. I have read a few other books centered on the sun's activity and another ice age but this one is actually more realistic in timing and results. The characters are people you want to know better and admire in many ways. I recommend this book and I hope there will be more to follow.

Different twist on the SHTF, I sure hope it doesn't happen - I hate the cold!! The story and characters are interesting and believable. The book was well written and well worth ones time to read. I'll be sure to read more books by Ms. Shaw.

I enjoyed Surrender the Sun. The main characters were likable which is very important to me. It also made me think. I love a book that has me doing research after I finish reading it. I had never heard of Launder Minimum and it was fascinating learning about it. I am looking forward to reading the second book when it comes out.

Very interesting post-apocalyptic theory. Many authors in this genre jump start the novel with the advent of an EMP then launch into beans, bullets, and bandages with little character development. Hats off to Ms. Shaw for more depth both in the plot and her characters. I read this entire series and look forward to additional sagas!

Wonderful! I couldn't stop reading and finished it in 2 dsys! I sincerely hope there is a sequel so that we can find out what happens in the future! Well written and realistic characters that you will come to know, love and cheer for. A surprisingly plausible tale!

Another new concept for a post apocalyptic world. This is more scary because it could really happen, and there is nothing we could do about it. Well written with great characters. Looking forward to the future installments.

The cold weather conditions bring forth the desperation in people to survive and gain power. Makes you really thinks how one can survive similar situations. I really enjoyed this Post Apocalyptic version and would recommend.

I enjoyed this novel even though I found the writing a bit simple. I also didn't especially like the portrayal of the main female character as hopeless and helpless. But, overall a pretty good tale of survival in a new ice age. I really don't like these series books where you are kept hanging and waiting for the next installment. Will probably read it when and if it ever comes out.

Confusing ending . Formatting of the ebook went right into the sample for another book about something totally different and it was Confusing . It didn't really feel like and "ending" of the original story.

Original story was to short, crammed alot of survival into a very short period of time and I think would have worked better had it all been stretched out. [ spoilers maybe] Monday the schools are closed because of a "ice" day, and by Friday you have looters burning down your house. Only 220 pages (wait, even shorter with the weird book sample at the end)... I just think the story would have been better told if given the character development (none) and a proper ending.
