I speak, read and understand German very well as both the progeny of immigrants and through collegiate studies. I bought this book for my wife so she could take a German course nearby. IMHO, a text book should give pronunciations and uses for the properly spoken language = High German. I found many errors, deviations and secondary meanings and uses throughout this book. I would not highly recommend it.

This book is great at reaching introductory parts to the language, four out of five stars because some of the example sentences made no sense, like "the waiter is in sweeden..." And silly stuff like that.

I would highly recommend this book for the beginner, who is looking for a great book that explains German, it's pronunciation, culture, etc. It really has made it fun. Also, it has taught me little things about its realtionship to English, historically and liguistically that makes it interesting. Great book for learning German, and enjoy it at the same time!

This book is terrific if you combine it with taking a beginning language class or accompanied with using the free online service Duolingo. Without the additional tools the book isn't quite enough unless know or understand how the words are pronounced.

I've been studying German for roughly three months and have amassed a vocabulary of around 500-600 words. Small number due to my work schedule.
This book is not a terrible introduction to German by any means, However it seems as though it focuses far more on all the grammatical jargon than it does actually teaching you useful words and how to properly SPEAK the language. I personally found the book boring and quite repetitive, with the C.D. being of little use. The mid and end chapter exercises can sometimes be poorly put together and make little sense.
This book is good if you have a photographic memory, and it can in some cases throw hundreds of words with all their variations at you in a single chapter and expect you to have them memorized before the end exercise.
Personally, I tend to learn better via apps, and immersion-based methods. So for that, I will give it three stars.

I have been learning German with the Rosetta Stone. This book was exactly the right resource to help understand the grammar rules and word usage. It makes sense of the language and helps cement what I am learning.

THIS BOOK IS VERY EASY TO FOLLOW AND THE PROGRESSION OF THE LESSONS MAKES IT VERY EASY TO LEARN EACH NEW MATERIAL IN THE SEQUENCE. I AM ALREADY SPEAKING GERMAN AT A CONVERSATIONAL LEVEL AND HAVE ONLY BEEN STUDYING EVERYDAY FOR THE PAST MONTH.

As someone who just recently started taking German classes, this book has been proven to be an invaluable resource. The author writes in a friendly, easy-to-understand manner, and the book is well-organized. I especially found the pronunciation guide to be one of the better ones I've come across.

This book makes the German language easy to learn. It breaks the language down to a point where it makes the learning experience easy. I am enjoying the experience in learning the language by practicing with native speakers what I am learning.

I've just received this book, so these comments are about the book's format, layout etc.
The book is quite large (8.0" x 9.25").
It stays open pretty flat.
The font is large (good for middle-aged and older readers).
The paper is cheap, but that's OK for the book's content.
There are no photographs; besides text, it includes a number of shaded tables.
It uses "white space" well to break up the text into paragraphs and sections.
There are 21 chapters.
The CD contains 83 tracks totaling 1:14 hour.
Each track contains a list of words from the book ready slowly by a male speaker.

I just started learning German. Literally just started, so I can honestly write this review from a completely beginners veiw of it. My native tongue is English, and I know a lot of Spanish. But I have always loved German culture, and that's where my family originally came from, so I decided to learn the language.
This book wasn't really the best choice though. The layout is good. And everything seems to be presented in an easy to understand order. But the CD is really lacking. I have almost no background in German speaking so I don't really know the sounds. I need a lot of work on my pronunciation. And this book just doesn't cut it. The cd has short little smatterings of words. But nothing big and useful.
Here's a prime example, on page 19 and 20 you are given a table to practice your German pronunciation..and it's not on the CD! How in the world am I supposed to make sure I'm saying it right when I can't hear it? Pretty frustrating. In hindsight I probably wouldn't have gotten this book. It's not enough for me personally, so I'm going to keep on looking for something more intensive.

Bought this book because, based on the cover, I thought it would be an easy-to-read, lots-of-photos way to teach my husband German. As a native German speaker and an ESL teacher, I was not at all happy with the format of this book. We did NOT have fun trying to learn using this book, and what's the point of learning if it can't be fun? The information in the book is correct and probably great for anyone trying to teach themselves the language without help who enjoys long grammar lessons, but it certainly wasn't for us.

On the CD they speak slowly, clearly and pause for you to practice between each word. I continue to go back and brush up or jump ahead if I need grammar help for Duolingo.
