Good book with interesting plot, nice historical background. I liked Johnson's alternating historical interweaving of plots. I did have a bit of confusion on when it switched from the past to the present and back, perhaps this was because I was listening to the audio version. Worth the read and I'm not disappointed I purchased it.

I love the entire Longmire series, but this one contained a couple nice surprises. First, it's a murder-on-a-train mystery, an usual setting for the stories. Second, it has a cliffhanger ending. It also alternates between the past and the present, revealing some extremely critical backstory about Walt Longmire's life.

Once again Craig Johnson brings us Longmire with a different angle. I like the books much better than the TV series. This was a mystery right out of the chute. Who was the bad guys and the options where open. I love the old sheriff with one leg...great character. Thanks Craig for another great story...Long live Longmire!

if you have read & liked any of Craig Johnson's previous books you will more then likely enjoy this one like-wise...to be continued ending is to be endured until the next segment...I am quite sure that that one will also be worth your while...highly recommended!...jo'c

I really love Longmire he neVer disappoints. Johnson's characters are so real. The wry humor and descriptions make me laugh even when the plot is at its most dire. This may be my favorite series surpassing Jack teacher and Lucas Davenport and that's saying something

Not as fresh as the earlier ones. However, I liked the jumping back and forth from early days to current. I liked the Wyoming geography, with which I am very familiar. I have stayed at the Virginian Hotel annex. Hope I don't have to wait a full year to find out what happened to Longmire's daughter.

Another in a great series. Both current day and flashback scenes are written well, with the same interesting characters and situations you have come to expect if you have read previous books. Beyond a simple whodunnit; Explores the characters and motivations, with some funny lines to keep things lively.

This was my favorite Longmire book so far. He always brings in so many characters that it is sometimes hard to keep them straight in his stories, but this one was good. Spoiler Alert-After the ending in this one, there will have to be a sequel-hopefully soon.

Another great Longmire book! Craig Johnson has written another wonderful book. This is a bit of a divergence from many of his earlier works, but just as captivating. I spend months looking forward to new books by Mr. Johnson and have yet to be disappointed.

I finished this latest novel yesterday after totally ignoring the dog. I like both mysteries and thrillers but was not expecting a Jack Reacher scenario. Loved the book but I read Longmire for the unique mystery style. For thrillers and adventures I have my favorite authors as well.

This story was very well told and woven together - past & present events. It continued to ramp up the excitement with the conclusion as it also managed to segue into the next book. I'm looking forward to the next one, for sure!

Another hit. The Longmire Mystery books keep getting better and better. My only complaint, too short. I enjoyed going back in time and learning more of Walt's history, his doubts about his career choice, etc. Great stuff.

Another in a fine series....great characters....a twisty little take that makes you want to jump to the end and find out who the bad guy was....it was worth the wait...cannot wait until the next volume appears....

While I did enjoy this Longmeier novel, I felt it was too short and did not have enough meat to fill out the plot. Probably needed another hundred or 200 pages to really make this a great story.

Also, I hate cliffhangers… That’s all I’m going to say about that.

Another in the series of Walt Longmire mystery stories. This is Mr. Johnson's latest and though it seems to be getting a little formulaic, it is still immensely readable and as always I never figure out the ending before hand. The way the scenery and characters are fully painted with words keeps me coming back for more and based on the ending pretty sure there will be more!

I love the Longmire series. I love Craig Johnson. I just did not like this book. Took me a longer time to read it. Some parts were ok and it did showcase the beginning of Walt being a deputy. Did not like the end.

I love all the other Longmire books,Ipaid 15 bucks for this one and I am sorry I bought it.The way in skips to a different time in each chapter is confusing. It would have been a great book if it was in two parts.

Craig Johnson is predictably good. I've read all of the Longmires and enjoyed them all. This one is a bit complicated, at first, jumping back and forth in time and place making it a bit confusing. The confusion clears up about half-way through and it turns in to the usual quality.

I loved the two tracks of story telling. (Sorry for the pun; I couldn't resist.) I gave it four stars only because I just hate books that end with a cliffhanger; it's a long time, if ever, we get to the finished story.

This is probably my new favorite Longmire book. I love Craig Johnson. He kept me guessing the entire time, and at times I thought maybe he was losing his story... but it wasn't until the last chapter where it all tied together and surprised me! It was awesome! Can't wait till the next book!

I loved that this one was different in its style. It moved right along and who cares about the cliffhanger, I was going to read the next one regardless and hope that Bidarte is taken care. That character and his shadow needs to go away.

At first I was somewhat confused with the story within the story but soon found myself totally captured by the twists and turns of Longmire’s new (and old) adventures. The ending was both fulfilling and unfulfilling....you’ll need to read this one! Ok, when’s the follow up coming out?

I liked the tie between the past, the railroad and the present in this book. This author always adds details of historical knowledge that add to the story. Great read and I am glad his next book it out soon.

There was a lot to enjoy about this latest Longmire mystery....but I did not enjoy the cliffhanger ending.....it could have been the beginning or the next book, but a book needs an ending and this book does not have one....

Another great Longmire story, but a little confusing if I took to long a break between reads. The story was actually two stories mixed together. Now I have to wait for "Depth of Winter" to see what happens to little Lola. Walt better be successful Craig or you are in trouble.........lol.

Have been a fan since day one...but completely finished with Craig Johnson. This attempt at writing a complete story falls miserably and lazily short of even mediocrity. The Western Star is mindless filler to reach a novel length and abandones the great characters once alive and well. I threw down the book before finishing out of respect to Vic and Henry....

Craig Johnson is a masterpiece in writing books! As you all know, season 6 of Longmire is around the corner, any day now but the waiting is there for the continuation. As now, we all will be waiting for his next book to come out and the waiting begins! #Longmirelives

Mr. Johnson continues to provide intriguing storylines that entertain me even after all his books on Walt I never feel as if the writing or story are just pushed out to meet a deadline. Love these books

Always enjoy Longmire but this was not as a intriguing story as past stories. Perhaps following two lines at the same time took away from the read. In any event I will read the next book should it come out.

Another home run from Craig Johnson! It's vintage Longmire and you have to really pay attention (a GOOD thing!) as he bounces back and forth between eras. After you finally turn the last page, you'll wish you were already holding the next volume in your hands with an unobstructed eight hours in your future. As the Netflix series debuts its final season, The Western Star is an outstanding script for Longmire - The Movie.

An amazing series & it just gets more amazing. The hardness of the western landscape is softened by the eyes of someone who truly loves it & the characters are portrayed with reality of human nature. Good story telling too.

Good read. I loved the literary device of jumping back and forth in time to tell one unified story. I did NOT care for the cliffhanger ending. We faithful readers of Mr. Johnson's work deserve better than that.
