I doubt there's a better manual on guitar repair, but this one could be even better. Sometimes the organization is a bit poor and definitely feels like it's been pulled from Dan's columns over the years. The included DVD is pretty useless and feels like a bit of an upsell to Dan's repair DVD series, which is quite expensive. Despite these issues, there's a lifetime's worth of great information in here and it makes for good reading. Coupled with some digging on youtube for videos of people making some of these repairs and a few quality tools, I've been able to get good results on a few projects.

I've been playing guitar for decades but only recently have I gotten into the mechanics of the guitar itself! The book is very well organized and even has many spec information about famous guitars of famous artists. This is a must-have book for anyone who delves into guitar repair or customization. I have learned a lot just by skimming through the pages. Yes, today is the youtube era where you can learn many things online, but this book goes deeper than any YT tutorial. You'll never have to pay a $50 setup fee at Guitar Center again!

Overall a very good guide. It took some practice, but I did a complete setup for the first time in a few hours using this book. It explained anything that could (and would) go wrong, how to fix or compensate for the problem, and get the most out of the guitar. This is opening a whole new guitar hobby for me--fixing them up.

First off... The kindle version has no embedded videos that would have been on the included DVD. It would have been nice if the the store write-up would have explained that. Unfortunately the kindle version was the same write up as for the paperback version, and referenced an "included DVD." for that reason I'm taking away a star. Poor, inaccurate write up.
The lacking video issue not withstanding, this is an outstanding reference and includes information on all of the repairs / maintenance that a serious player needs to know. What surprised me was the wealth of information on advanced repairs that are really more suited to someone with advanced knowledge/experience and very comfortable with the techniques and tools described. This is exactly what I needed: a guide to regular set-ups and maintenance, and a basic understanding of the more advanced techniques of how guitars are repaired, including tools and techniques used by techs and luthiers. This information and knowledge is critical when deciding who to allow to fix your guitar or bass! Being able to discuss and understand the concepts will lead you to better decision making.
My last complaint is in the OCR used to scan the text into an electronic format for the kindle. Poor follow-up editing on the electronic version resulted in numerous misspellings (such as exclamation marks being used for lower-case "L"s on occasion, and sentences or phrases with no spaces (whichlookslikethis). It's easy to read over and through these glitches, but honestly, you shouldn't have to.
I bought the kindle version because I like the idea of saving paper and printing costs and I use my e-reader for nearly all of my books now, but knowing what I know now about the lack of a DVD and the sloppy editing, I would have chosen the print version.

If you have even the slightest dexterity with hand tools, this book shows you how to perform basic repairs. OR, you can follow the instructions and do very difficult chores around your guitar. I have several guitars, both acoustic and electric, and the book has helped me adjust the string height, fix the frets on my bass, etc. Well written and it has tons of pictures.

Very happy with the purchase. I expected a book that was much less extensive. Dan is a great at imparting simple explanations to keeping your guitar looking & sounding wonderful.
The book was shipped fast & was in top shape.

At least nearly1/2 volume of the book contains useless references making it unnecessarily bulky and heavy. There has to be a better way of organizing this book to make it useful to most of common users who are just looking for a typical guitar set ups and adjustments instruction specifics.

This book has lots of good info. From basic knowledge to more complex fixes, you can find just about anything in here. You may need to referenced the internet to see how some of this stuff is done, but the book will put you on the right path.

Very readable. Comprehensive coverage of many areas. Gave me enough info to start tearing apart bolt-on neck guitars, replacing stuff, and tweaking all kinds of things on the guitars I own. Highly recommend.

This one is a must. I do all my own set-ups and adjustments and this book covers all the bases, even beyond what you might feel doing yourself, such a re-setting a neck. Never condescending and very clearly written.
If there is something that you won't feel comfortable doing yourself, at least you will have a good appreciation of the skill level required for a pro to do the job.
