There were some good points and helpful but overall Ms Cap's style of teaching did not mesh for me. I found the book a little confusing. Same with her videos. I know I am in the minority . I have played bass for over 20 years so please dont comment and bash me for this opinion But as an overall resource I will keep the book for the tips I can glean from it.

This is a great book, the author breaks music theory down so you learn on a good gradient and on a pretty rapid path. It's called "Music Theory" but it's a lot more in that the author includes good drills and exercises as part of the study. The book has video links too so
that each exercise has a video where the author demonstrates the exercises. Sort of proves the author is actually a bass player not
someone in an ivory tower. The links are at [...] I use this book as well as on line bass tuition atScott Devine's
website academy.

Music Theory for the Bass Player is going to rock your world! Ariane is a well respected teacher and an accomplished musician who has tackled a tough subject -- music theory. What makes her book unique is her approach to guiding you to understand music theory first. Most books start with teaching you how to read music, then immediately jump into theory. This approach works well as a refresher for the musician that already reads, but for the musician who doesn't read music notation already, it is almost impossible to learn to read musical notation AND music theory at the same time. More than one student has tried one of these music theory books and thrown up their hands in frustration saying "I can't understand music theory!" That's just not the case! What they can't do is wade through the complex subject of musical notation and trying to understand how music works at the same time. This book relies on fretboard diagrams more than on notation and has you think things through yielding a deeper and more organic understanding of how music works. There are fun exercises and quizzes to guide you along. This book is for bass players, but it is an approach that works for all instruments. We learn to talk before we learn to read and write, same thing should apply for music. This book is an essential book for bass players, and Ariane's approach to teaching theory is one that I hope will be adopted for the sake of all those frustrated musicians out there that are convinced they'll never understand music theory. And, just to make it even better, Ariane has 89 teaching videos posted to help you learn. Go to: https://arisbassblog.com/free-vids-to-book/ and start learning!!!

I'm an intuitive player from early teens and never learned reading or theory. I haven't given up on this book yet, but as much as it boasts that a non-reader can access it - it's pretty dense material. Not "theory for dummies" for sure.

I reluctantly give 2 stars to this book which makes a very disjunct attempt at showing music theory for bassists. I have 25 years of teaching, performing and intensive/continued study of all forms of music with my teaching on Skype/Jeffrey Thomas.
This book does not follow any of the structure shown in all college level traditional/classical or modern pop/jazz methods. The fundamental Major scale, key signature, relative minor structure is not there. Also, tablature is shown and this hinders students from actually learning their notes. I have 5 students who are working on this book and I am constantly having to create supplemental worksheets in standard notation to make the examples presented in this book practical and relevant for my students. The search for a bass theory book continues.

If you are serious about learning Bass, this is the "book" for you. It's so much more than just a book, though. It is a comprehensive program that covers music theory ( the "why") as well as proper technique (the "how"). Ari is blessed with the ability to teach complex subject matter in a straightforward and easy-to-understand manner. Not very common for a player as accomplished as she is. Best thing about this program is that is constantly evolving via her blog and email updates/supplements. So, whether you are a beginner wanting to get off to a good start with a good foundation, or an intermediate player wanting to fine tune your technique or improve your theory, this book is for you. Every page you turn will make you a little bit better on the bass. Good Learning!

I have bought or checked out pretty much every guitar and bass instructional book out there (I play both), and this is the best I've seen. This book is not only beautifully laid out and written in an engaging style, but it's very clear and practical. The videos make it even more valuable because Ariane is a very engaging teacher and the sound and visual quality of her videos is excellent. My musicianship has grown exponentially thanks to this book.

As a beginner bass guitarist I believed the book to be correct until i got an email from the author saying there were 17 typos but didn't feel it necessary to replace it and expected me to correct the mistakes myself.

Very well laid out and organized book. Covers all aspects from technique to theory and is relevant to beginners and seasoned players alike. Ari is also easy to reach out to via email with questions and has an online course to go along with the book. Haven't tried that yet, but reviews are excellent.

I LOVE this book. Wonderful resource for a lot of subject I have forgotten or never learned before. Even old guitar players like me can benefit from having and using this book. Ariane is a wonderful artist and writer. Go to YouTube and see just how well a player she is. Gives one something to shoot for!!
Buy this book!! You won't regret it.

This is the best instructional book on bass playing that I have encountered so far. Ariane has managed to organize the information in a way that is useful and easy to understand.
I feel like a better bassist and musician having read this text. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to further their bass playing.
Thanks for your hard work Ariane!
