Lisa Gardner is exceptional! She the only author I diligently collect. My hubby will even go to the store at Midnight when her books release just so I can read the latest one first thing in the morning!!

I have always enjoyed the Detective D.D. Warren series and it has been years since I have read a Quincy and Rainie series. I thought it was a great idea to combine the two series but something was missing in this story. I couldn't put my finger on it but I am looking forward to reading the new book that is coming out soon with these characters. I hope it will be as good as the other books in these two series.

The "queen" of crime thrillers, Lisa Gardner returns following Find Her (2016) with a tantalizing mystery suspense short story, with an un·be·liev·a·ble twist: THE 4TH MAN (Quincy & Rainie #6.5) with a preview of the upcoming highly anticipated Right Behind You, which will leave you salivating, and rushing to pre-order.
Boston Homicide Detective DD Warren has inherited a cold case and FBI Profiler, Pierce Quincy and his partner wife, Rainie Connor, have flown in from Oregon to assist with the case. (love this duo)! A ten-year-old case of a young woman murdered at the university library, in the stairwell. Manual strangulation. No signs of struggle, no evidence of sexual assault. Non-violence. Not a single print, hair, thread, speck of dirt, or swab of DNA to be recovered.
The only detail out of place; she’d been missing her shoes. A pair of dirty white Keds, which per her family, she purchased the year before for less than twenty bucks. They were never recovered from the crime scene. There was a guard on duty for the evening, plus one for the graveyard shift. The students used an electronic access system to enter the library. However, the students could also bring guests with them. These were to be manually logged in by the guard under the student’s ID.
Over the course of the years, they did not have these guest’s names and the original investigators had dropped the ball. From a list of over sixty possible murder suspects, with ten years to run and hide, the person could be clever or cold. Rainie and Quincy’s job was to push buttons of the prime suspects. (They remind me of The Mentalist ), one of my favorites. Observant. Intuitive. Sharp.
The beautiful honor student, Jaylin Banks had whispered conversations and phone calls, as well as canceled meetings leading up to the night of her murder. A smart girl dating a bad boy. Sweet and introverted.
Suspect #1: James Duchovny, the boyfriend at the time. Binge drinking, a bully, hoodlum, explosive temper, violence and a rap sheet. He had been 22 yrs. Of age at the time of the murder. A jealous rage?
Suspect #2: Dennis Ringham, early thirties; one of the two security guards working on the night in question- the university’s rent-a-cop. Someone who wanted a uniform but couldn’t have one.
Suspect #3: Laurel Santana, a professional security guard, working the graveyard shift. Married with a baby. The wild card. He had been the one to find the body. He came on at 11:50 pm.
There had also been a mysterious older female visitor. A secret meeting? Who was The 4th Man? Did someone come back or stay behind?
James and Jaylin were supposed to meet at the library and go out afterward. Her paper was not finished. He had told the security guard she was on the second floor and to keep an eye out for her. She said she needed an extra hour and would meet him at the bar. Did he return to the library later? Whoever killed her had to be someone already inside the library. Someone with access to the library.
A student, a guest, or a security guard? A 4th Man. Motive? Obsession? A classic closed-room murder, based on a true story—Lisa Gardner once again delivers an intriguing crime thriller with characters’ reader's love. The investigators prevailed, identifying the perp and finding justice in a case where the truth truly is stranger than fiction.
As always, Gardner has the perfect combo and all the essentials: Setting, a perpetrator, an alibi, a suspect, a victim, a puzzle, evidence, a motive, a detective or sleuth, a clue, a plot, and a finally, a breakthrough. Lisa Gardner and Karin Slaughter always deliver the best novellas!
A killer teaser, with a bonus preview of more "real-life inspired "suspense, "Right Behind You", where we continue with an unstoppable team; Quincy and Rainie as they take on a spree killer with the help of their foster daughter and an expert in fugitive tracking. The novella is worth the read to get the preview of the real deal. Trust me, it is extraordinary. Was fortunate to have received an early reading copy (1/31/17) - Right Behind You (review forthcoming) is one of Gardner’s best yet! Jaw-dropping, spine-tingling . .
“Had a family once. Father. Mother. Sister. Lived in our very own double-wide.” . . . .

This was my first story in the Quincy & Rainie series. "The 4th Man" is a crossover with Gardner's D.D. Warren series, of which I've read a few. Warren, Quincy, and Rainie have teamed up to work a cold case. After going through the original case files and looking at all the suspects, the team has narrowed down the suspect list to a handful. We sit in on the interviews, but lack the information that the police and FBI have. D.D. Warren has identified one or more lies that each suspect told. Using those lies in conjunction with the questioning, they zero in on the guilty party. While the identity wasn't a surprise, the motive was. The reveal left me going 'huh?' And then I read her note at the end where she states that it was inspired by a real case. And I went 'huh' again. Truth really is stranger than fiction.
The story is tightly written; at under 50 pages there's no room for detours or extraneous details. Despite that, the story didn't grab me right away; but I was pulled in as I read. I was left wanting to know more about Quincy and Rainie. They worked well together and seem like interesting people. That was helped by the excerpt at the back from their next book. "The 4th Man" has strong plotting and writing and interesting characters.
I received an egalley from the publisher for an honest review

This is a very short story featuring Profiler Pierce Quincy and Officer Rainie Conner D. D. Warren, who plays a minor role. Although this read is a stand alone I would recommend to read the previous books to enjoy it even more.
Many years ago a young college student was found strangled in the library. At that time, only her shoes went missing. They couldn't find any DNA, nobody saw anything and they couldn't get any clues. The only suspects were the three men who were at that time in the library: 2 security guards from campus and her boyfriend.
At D.D. Warren's request, Quincy and Connor agree to see if they can find any leads talking with these three men. But what happens if maybe there was a fourth man?
The story is very good and I wanted to read more! Too short!

Lisa Gardner has brought back Pierce and Rainie in this novella to get her readers excited to read her new novel about them - Right Behind You due to publish on January 31. Since its been almost 8 years since her last book in the FBI Profiler series, this teaser sure worked for me and I am anxious to read the new novel.
In this story, Pierce and Rainie are called in to help DD Warren solve a 10 year old cold case. She and her team have done all of the leg work and now have 4 people in interrogation rooms waiting to be interviewed by the the couple. A young college girl had been murdered in the college library and there were three likely suspects that had been questioned after the murder and one '4th man' who had shown up as a possible suspect during the cold case investigation. The meticulously question each suspect and get new information on each but are still unsure about who the murderer is -- until the question the 4th person.
This is a fantastic short story and if you are a fan of this series, it will definitely whet your appetite to read the new book. If you haven't read the series -- now is the time to catch up - you won't be disappointed!

Detective D.D. Warren is working a cold case. Ten years ago, Jaylin Banks was strangled in a stairwell of the campus library. She wasn’t sexually assaulted and the three men who were in the library at the time, her boyfriend and two security guards, have alibis. D.D. enlists the help of profiler Pierre Quincy and his wife, Rainie Connor, a former police officer, to help question the suspects.
The suspects are interviewed, but no new information is elicited until D.D. begins to wonder if there was a 4th man. This line of thinking leads to some new evidence and the case takes shape.
Although a short story, about 40 pager, this is a full D.D. Warren detective story. The questioning of suspects by Pierre and Raine is well done. It keeps you guessing about who is telling the truth and whether they will be able to identify the killer.
I love Lisa Gardner’s mysteries. The characters are well drawn and even in a story as short as this one, there are twists that keep you guessing. If you’re a Lisa Gardner fan, don’t miss this one. If you’re new to her novels, this is a good place to start.

Let me tell you about my latest favorite: Lisa Gardner's The 4th Man.
Combining the characters from her books, Gardner writes a compelling little story of Boston detective D.D. Warren coming together with ex-FBI profiler Pierce Quincy and his partner, former police officer Rainie Conner. The three of them come together to solve a five year-old cold case with three viable suspects.
The case? "A young woman is found strangled in the stairwell of a college library, only her sneakers missing. With no physical evidence, no signs of sexual assault, and no witnesses, all the police have to go on are the three men who were in the library with her: her boyfriend and two campus security guards . . . all of whom have secrets, none of whom can be proven guilty."
Warren, Quincy, and Conner must delve into the backgrounds of all three suspects, snaking out secrets and lies to figure out if one of these three suspects is guilty of murder, or did they miss someone? Could the guilty party be an elusive 4th MAN?
I loved The 4th Man. Quick, engrossing, and fun.

The 4th Man by Lisa Gardner is a highly recommended police procedural short story featuring FBI Profiler Pierce Quincy, Officer Rainie Conner, and Detective D. D. Warren.
Quincy and Rainie agree to look at a cold case for D. D. Warren and see if they can build a case against one of the three suspects. Five years ago a young college student was found strangled in the stairwell of a college library. There were no signs of a sexual assault, no physical evidence left behind, and no witnesses. The only obvious thing missing were her white sneakers. There are three definite suspects, her boyfriend and two security guards, but is there an unidentified fourth man?
Gardner gives us a well-written short story here with favorite characters. Included in the eBook short is an excerpt from her new novel, Right Behind You. The only drawback is that this is a very short story, but it is satisfying to follow the clues as they reach a resolution to the cold case.

This is a short story combining several of my favorite Lisa Gardner characters. Sgt. D.D. Warren is working a 10-year old cold case of a college woman who was found strangled in the library stairwell. She contacts Pierce Quincy and Rainie Connor for their expertise. They interview 3 suspects of the 60 that were on the original list, and then one of the suspects mentions the 4th man. After interviewing the 4th man, they determine who the killer is.
Quick read, enjoyable. Based on an actual murder!
