Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained (Collins Classics)

This Modern Library edition is gorgeously printed and well-annotated with invaluable critical notes that will make the work vastly more accessible to the average person while providing useful background to others. I would have preferred it to have included Paradise Regained, however, as I think it's an important companion to the work. Those with more of an interest in literary criticism or who wish to more vigorously digest and dissect the poem would be advised to steer themselves towards the Norton Critical Edition, however.

The only caveat here is that Mr. Pullman's contributions are not longer and deeper. His insights and his interpretive skills are invaluable. As a Milton scholar for 40+ years I find this the most useful/enjoyable edition of Paradise Lost. Period.

This is a must read for anybody interested in where much of modern Christian thought derives. The vast dialogue is eloquent, and it has been incorporated into many aspects of modern life that may go unnoticed.

This story, or epic poem, is a great theological and political satire. It is also just a fun and interesting read. It offers the darkness of the human condition and the hope that we can rise above it. I was very compelled.

Of course since he was not there he has embellished what he thinks heaven and hell are like. One suggestion if you are going to read the poem get yourself a good dictionary.

The book started off very interesting. However when it came down to reading the actual poem or what ever you call it I lost interest. Could not quite finish it. I would read a couple of pages put the Kindle down for about three or more day and then tried to read some more.

I have enjoyed the entire Joanna Brady series of books by JA Jance. They are well written, the plot holds my interest and the characters continue to develop in each successive novel. I will keep these books and others by Jance on my radar.

Absolutely amazing, i was pleasantly surprised by its many, many pages but that is because there are detailed notes about all of the "books" in the book. Yes every section is Book I and Book II etc. Great for help in comprehending, must read for anyone who enjoys literature.

Missing from my collection, this classic was a must-have. I'm not a snob about paperback vs hardcover, so for the price, this was a nice offering. I was nicely surprised by the illustrations in this volume, and pleased with the price. I'd recommend to anyone interested in reading this hallmark tome but not willing to spend a fortune for the hardbound editions. Be practical and serious, you'll only read this once or twice in your lifetime!

What began with a fall from heaven leads into this story. It's like Pilgrim's Progress in that personality flaws and evil things are given a personification--that is, they are made into a "person" to dog the heroes of the story.

It's epic Christian literature and you really should read it.

All through the years, women have been trying to attract men and men have been trying to attract women. This story tells the story of women, their moms, and aunts who are trying to find a suitable man for them to marry. I enjoyed identifying with each character and see their encounters as they were living them.

This edition contains the text, the whole text, and nothing but the text of these Milton masterworks. I would have liked at least the inclusion of line numbers in a printing of an epic poem containing more than 10,000 lines, if not a little introduction. The poem is wonderful, but a little more background for today's reader would have been useful.

I was skeptical that Milton could continue in the same quality, and the beginning was slow. He continues to develop the character of Satan, as in PL, but the Son of God triumphs decisively with authority, piety, and clarity.

I was surprised that the "undoing" or reversal of PL was not the resurrection. But PR makes so much sense. It speaks directly to Romans 5, where Paul writes "For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous." (verse 19)

I also appreciated how, like Dante, Milton puts the classical Greeks in the discourse. Satan brings a perspective and Christ brings another. Milton obviously has huge respect for the ancient Greeks. I think he shows their place in Book IV.

Milton is brilliant. I recommend PR to lovers of Milton, Dante, and all English poetry and prose.
