Every busy parent and professional, or recent retiree needs to read this book. Beautifully written with many quotes you'll want to write down to remember. Being still is necessary in a fast paced world like ours!

Reading this book lowers my blood pressure and helps me breath more calmly. I read it on my original Kindle, which means the photographs were in black and white, which isn't ideal. Even so, they were still an important part of the book.

Pico Iyer has defined, in a nutshell and citing references from Ancient philosophers to modern songwriters, the benefits of stillness. This book resonated with me as nothing short of call to action. It's a concise summary of our current understanding of the health and mental health benefits of making time for stillness anywhere we find ourselves. I read it on Kindle and also am using the audio feature to listen to it as well. I will read, listen and repeat many times I'm sure. I recommend this book to everyone. It's short and easy to read. I recommend that if it didn't make sense when first reading it to try it another time. It may make sense then.

I've read some critics about the short content of the book. Well it rung in me, it does have a lot of substance. Maybe listen to Old Ways album while reading, as an icing on the cake.
The author shares a few great references also. You should leave the book with a hunger for stillness and quiet.
In an age of speed, I began to think, nothing could be more invigorating than going slow.
In an age of distraction, nothing can feel more luxurious than paying attention.
And in an age of constant movement, nothing is more urgent than sitting still.

Iyer's suggestions are worth doing. Only i'm having trouble settling down my thoughts whenever i sit down and try to meditate. If he included that in the book (how the likes of Cohen did it), it would have been great.

What a GREAT book. Short read, but just right. I really enjoyed it, and am working on finding some quiet time for both myself and my good friend (Mother of 4 (Girls 19, 16, 15 and a Boy 10)) so we can keep our sanity!

Actually, I haven't started reading it yet. I ordered it by mistake, as it was in with a list of "If you like Small Victories....you might like 'The Art of Stillness' ". I thought it was another book by Anne Lamott. Once I received "The Art of Stillness", however, I looked through it and decided it was a book that I'd like. I'm giving it 4 stars, as I think it will be good reading.

A beautiful essay on the art of stillness, a treasure. Every one should have a copy especially the young ones who are so often disconnected from their body in todays world of multi tasking..
I have given copies to my clients and suggest that they watch his presentation on Ted Talks.

The quotes were the only thing of value. It almost as if though the writer were boasting to a group (of equally weathly) individuals about his famous connections. And how he uses he second home as way to find "stillness".
