I love this dictionary...excellent resource for my second grader who always wants to know what words mean! Can definitely be utilized by older children as well; beautifully illustrated...this is a major plus and we love it!

I ordered this dictionary for my grandsons birthday. He will be turning 8 years old in 2 weeks. He is a voracious reader. He is in 2nd grade and is reading at the 5th grade level ! I know he will love it and it will be a treasure. I liked it so much I kept the first copy for myself! I ordered another one for my grandson tonight! Dictionary includes 35,000 words and phrases, maps, hundreds of photos, synonyms, word histories. A wonderful reference section includes countries, flags of the world, USA Presidents & Vice-Presidents, abbreviations, pronunciation guides, and signs & symbols. A wonderful book! Excellent price (thank you the store!), good quality format & beautiful clear photos! Current edition is 2008 I highly recommend this dictionary!

Excellent dictionary! Clear pictures, thousands of words, easy to read. I bought 2 for my classroom of children with special needs and so far, using them has gone well. They were a good deal and they arrived very quickly after ordering.

Hubby and I read the reviews of several children's dictionaries and even went to a couple of bookstores to physically see them and we were very impressed with this one. The others were very good too, but the illustrations on every single page of this dictionary compelled us to purchase this one for our two kids ages 6 and 8. I tested it by looking up words that I thought a children's dictionary wouldn't have such as "paraffin", "spectre", and "rosette" and was pleased to find them all. The pages are good quality paper, the printing clear and easy to read, and the photographic illustrations are very clear. Though it did have the definitions for the male and female reproductive organs, there were no pictures of them so I guess that's good if you are wanting to keep your children from seeing such things. In the back of the dictionary is a very good reference section with world maps and information about the various countries and continents, several pages of world flags, a list of the presidents of the United States, abbreviations, pronunciation guides and a picture index. This dictionary is great for kids in elementary through high school and adults can use it too. I wish I had one of these when I was in school! I can't believe a book of this scope and quality costs less that 15 dollars. A very good dictionary for anyone needing one.

I love the definitions and illustrations in this book. My 6 year old loves opening it and just wonders and reads through pages, learning something new on her own. I think this book is a must have for every family.

Comprehensive, well illustrated, and written to be understood by children aged 9 - 12. The definitions of most words searched have been easily understood by my nine year old son. Some definitions have necessitated my participation to provide a more simplified explanation. A further noted weakness of the dictionary is that a significant number of words fail to provide an example of its use in a sentence. A more consistent usage of this feature would have resulted in a 5 star rating. These faults, however, are minor and should not deter the reader from purchasing this dictionary. Some noteworthy unexpected strengths of the dictionary was the inclusion of a reference section containing maps of the world and seven continents, illustrations of the flags of the world, a list of the 50 states and their capitals, and a listing of the Presidents and Vice-Presidents of the United States. A recommended companion to the dictionary is The American Heritage Children Thesaurus.

The Merrium Webster Children's Dictionary is a premium quality dictionary for children of all ages. This book was built solid & sturdy, and it would easily last through many generations to come (I recommend the hardcover).

It's easily the only dictionary your children will ever need. It's perfectly suitable for older children, as well as beginning readers.

Jam-packed with beautiful bright illistrations, this dictionary is easy rnough for beginning readers. It's complete--you won't need another one.

Seriously. It's Merriam-Webster for kids. Has plenty of pictures and the typical information attached to each word. It has less words than Merriam-Webster because it focuses on words that children will come across. Otherwise, it is a very thorough dictionary for children and my 7-year-old daughter loves it.

I'd recommend buying Scholastic Dictionary Of Spelling (Revised) to go with it for your child to be able to look up spellings of words. Using both of them together truly helps to improve the vocabulary of your child.

I picked this book over other after reading the reviews. I am really
glad that I did. Really great book. The idea of using in a sentence
along with picture descriptions for few is a great recipe. My kids really love it. My only concern is - for a given word if we need to all synonyms,
we cannot do that. I guess we have to buy a different book for that crosscheck.

A black and white kindle dictionary is for adults.
Loved this print with the DK strength of illustration. Suitable for kids from kindergarten and up. If your preschooler knows how to spell at 4 (which I positively think is realistic to achieve with the right textbook The Reading Lesson: Teach Your Child to Read in 20 Easy Lessons), go ahead use it!

We got this dictionary for my second grader. She LOVES it. She has spent time looking through it and reading whatever caught her fancy (like the gorgeous entry on gems.) I looked up a number of words when it arrived, and it's apolitical, easy to understand, and interesting. My daughter hugging it her while hanging out is the best endorsement I can give.

This children's dictionary was well received by a child in the second grade. She was excited to have her own dictionary and has spent many hours perusing the book just for the pleasure of reading about new things. The definitions a very child friendly and the art work draws the reader from one word to another.

My second-grader needed a dictionary for school, and this one not only is expansive, but it also is very kid-friendly. My grandson is not very bookish, but he enjoys this one, because it contains just about "every word you could imagine," in his words, and because it is seductively beautiful and brightly illustrated with decent print, as reflected in his eyes. It has been a long time since I thought of a dictionary as "fun", but now I remember what it was like to explore the English language at a young age of discovery. What's more, this dictionary is more fun to read, while pondering its copious illustrations that seem to jump off the page, than even the encyclopedic dictionaries of old. To my mind, this is a near-perfect dictionary for the young (and even for the young-at-heart). This partnership of Merriam-Webster and DK is stunning, just stunning. The only negative to such an ambitiously large compendium of knowledge obviously is its size and weight. But not only did my grandson not complain about how large and heavy it is, but he has happily carried this dictionary everywhere, seemingly proud to display such a "weighty" and "beautiful" book for all to see. To tell the truth, he does look smarter just holding it. What's more, it seems not only well designed, but also well manufactured, with a real protective cover, and thick pages, that should hold up well to many years of use by young hands. Frankly, for such quality, the price seems an unbelievable bargain.

The dictionary exceeds every possible expectation that we had. We received it at noon today and as of 10pm this evening my son (7 years old) is still looking at the pictures and thinking of words to look up. This dictionary is lavishly illustrated, heavy (but easy enough for a sturdy 7 year old to carry) and is worth so much more. It really is the like having a dictionary and an encyclopedia in one.

This is a really good dictionary for kids. The words are large, easy to locate and each page has words that are illustrated like an encyclopedia. The dictionary is in color. My daughter in in 2nd grade and gets homework requiring use of dictionary. This dictionary got her hooked on to learning new words and now she likes to read it on its own. Very happy with the product.

My son is in elementary school. He is still learning the definitions of words and so forth. He wants to know the definition of words, so I bought this book. He can easily look up the words. The alphabet is on the side of the book and color coated. My son had trouble with the ordinary dictionary that we bought. He can find all the words easily in this book. There are pictures in this book as well. This is a great educational tool. The definitions are simple and easy for a nine year old to understand. I do not know the definition to every word, but this book seems to have the answers.
