Great book for someone wanting to start a company amd make it visionary. I like how they explain all their research findings and put it all together to show the importance of establishing your companies core values. Overall great read.

Excellent to understand the dynamic of building and, which is more, sustaining an organization. Being published more than 15 years ago provides an opportunity to see organizations that used to be regarded as visionary companies at the time now struggling, e.g. HP or Boeing and vice versa.

This book reads like a history of American business. The focus is on large, blue chip companies -- Disney, Boeing, GE, Proctor & Gamble, etc. It's a great read if you want to understand the past 100 years.

This book starts of with listing the visionary companies and what criteria they are using to consider them as visionary companies. You may agree or disagree with them but it is always important that you know when the author/s make it absolutely clear the context they are using. It also does a great job of describing why they felt these companies need to considered a visionary companies and what made them one. This book was recommended to us for our Strategy course at University of Chicago Booth School of Business by our strategy professor. I would definitely recommend it.

This is the most relevant, well-presented, easy-to-read research project I've seen. The data is easily transferable to to practical use. I have seen its implementation make a really big positive difference in groups within organizations.

A really good and eye opening book. I found really interesting the correlations that the writers observe that exist. The finding s seem to be in line with the new sustainability trend. I totally recommend it to anyone concerned about businesses.

Terrible book. Had to read and write about it for a class at school. It is the single most repetitive piece of writing I have come across. My suggestion is to read the first chapter, skim the middle nine chapters, and then read the last chapter. The concept behind each chapter is laid out in the first paragraph of the chapter and then the author spends 20 or so pages giving example after example. Largely a waste of time. The concepts themselves are reasonably interesting, but the book is dreadfully boring.

Theory is good, but certain claims are overrated. The great (visionary companies) have strong cultures and values and they only take in people who demonstrate those values and ideals. Check Glassdoor, a website where companies are rated by their own employees. There are enough examples where there is huge dissatisfaction with the way (visionary) companies operate and and play on their ideals.

Over all a decent read, but struggled to figure out the worth of 6 years of research.

Five star for information and insight to the real way to have a long term great company that lives for generations. Just to wordy. These writers are academics and it shows. No need to tell you, give several examples and then tell you what they just explained to you.

This was descent book, but it was difficult to stay focused on what Jim was trying to get accross. I stopped reading after about 5 chapters. It does mention great companies in the book that I've always wondered about their backgrounds though. So that was interesting at least.

Very clear and straightforward comparisons. The do's and dont's are described with names, faces, specific situations and timelines. Sometimes politically incorrect to the firms that "did not last", but such incorrectness helps deliver the punchlines. Essential for people working in big organizations, and very helpful for those who want to start a business with a firm footing.
