As a newly diagnosed Diabetic, this book has provided me with some much needed information.
It is presented in a very easy to understand manner. I bought the Kindle copy to have easy
access. It is a really good book.

The information in this book is problematic: the information may be outdated although I can't be certain of that; but I found the information to be inadequate. The difference between Type I and Type II diabetes leaves a lot of muddy or grey area. The information is better than nothing but I would consult a variety of sources for more information. A dietician may lean towards a more food related instruction; a physician may focus more on pills and insulin instruction -- probably giving you a better guide to the medical causes, meaning, and solutions.

Book was simple to understand and to the point. Information was well organized. Book explained different types meters and how to use them. It also explained different types of medication, and how they are used to treat diabetes.
Temple of the Winds; Soul of the Fire; Fa - The Sword of Truth Box Set :: The Second Rule of Scoundrels (Rules of Scoundrels) :: Fire and Ice (Liam Campbell Book 1) :: Fire and Ice (J. P. Beaumont Novel) :: The King in Yellow (Tales of Mystery & the Supernatural)

I had previously ordered the book, I recommend it for patients all the time, wanted to see if the $5 edition was as good, I did NOT see prominently anywhere that this was a smaller, abridged pocket edition. It will be useful, smaller and easier to get through, so it will be useful, but it is NOT the full book.

I've read several "For Dummies" books and have always been happy - until now. The writer gives nice detail in some areas but leaves a great deal unsaid and unexplained. For someone who is entirely new to the diabetic journey, it doesn't provide enough information to answer many questions. Lastly, some of his information runs counter to other credible sources. It left me with the impression that he's more interested in promoting his own (seemingly biased) views, rather than approaching the subject as I've seen of other Dummies authors, which is to present the reader with enough well rounded information to make their own informed choice.

Rubin is right. The device pictured on the cover is inexpensive. You can pick it up at the local drug store and check your sugar levels. It's a good measurement for weight control also--keeps you on a plan to take off 10-to-15 pounds. Rubin also describes all the medicates a physician might prescribe and the value of each one. Rubin's "subtle" advice however, it's our diet and what we eat that counts. Carbohydrates "count" up on the sugar meter if we eat too many.

Picture shows what appears to be the full size book because the "look inside" emblem on the cover covers up the "pocket edition" sign, but when it arrived it is a miniature pocket edition with a price tag of .99 cents. I paid $5.68. With the restocking fee and shipping charges back to the store I will still be out more money than it is worth so I am stuck with it.

This is a comprehensive but concise information on diabetes. Dr. Rubin guides reader step by step in a easy to read and understand text. Diabetes is not a modern disease that 200 years ago, Greeks, Romans, Indian and Chinese described and reported - urine that tasted sweet (.P.27). Diabetes is a silent killer with symptoms of frequent urination and thirst, blurry vision, extreme hunger, fatigue and weight loss. Dr. Elliot Joslin in 1921 suggested treatments by diet, exercise and medication. Now, A1C test will check out whether it is pre-diabetes or diabetes.
Dr. Rubin lists different kind of medicines for treatment with a detail highlights on Metformin (p.234). He specially advises on protection from the dangers of new drugs on the open secret of misconduct between pharmaceutical industry and medical doctors He devotes Chapter 17 on Discovering what doesn't work in diabetes treatment. He lists four popular false claims on several websites on their "cures" (.p327). He mentions about FTC phony website to warn against the hoax and scam.
This guide book offers good solid information on this important health care issue with an appendix on restaurants and mini cookbook to try at home. It looks like modern diet of white bread, french fry and soda is toxic to our health.
