We love this manual. We recently got a 79 Superbeetle and I borrowed this copy from my local library. I didn't even know they carried this kind of thing. Turns out, this book is GREAT! Gives you information not found in other manuals AND says it in a way that you don't need to be a mechanic to understand how to do it. This is one of the best purchases I ever made on the store.

Prefer this manual to Chilton's for our VW Convertible. Drawings are concise. Tips are geared to what isn't working and then gives suggestions on what to try first. Also contains list of parts (used, re-manufactured and new) dealers and their websites which is very helpful since no one carries parts for our 1970 Convertible here.

This is the must have book about maintaining and repairing your Volkswagen. It is viewed by VW owners as the most valuable aid, especially to those new to the VW scene. Written with some humor as well. Highly recommended.

This book is the ultimate guide for keeping your Volkswagen up to speed. The diagrams show it the way it really is - not a computer generated drawing. This way, you truly know how it looks when you get in there and what to do with all the stuff! Computer drawings throw you off base and can be confusing because they do not truly represent what's in there.

It's truly for the "idiot." The text is down to earth and humorous at times. I highly recommend this book for someone who is going to be working on a Volkswagen.

Entertaining and informative with amazing illustrations. Muir's wit and insight make this SOOOO much more than a do-it-yourself manual or Chilton's guide. It'll take you back to 1973 in every respect. Beautiful as a coffee-table book, a time-capsule, and mechanical literature.

That said, if you're serious about self-maintaining your dub, you'll need to get the Bentley (official VW) guide too.

Got this copy to replace one from the 1970s. This is the best book ever to learn how to repair a VW and many of the principles carry over to other vehicles. Really good if you are a beginner car buff.

I used the first or second edition to rebuild several VW engines in the 70s and 80s. More Zen than "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" - it's a philosophical treatise as well as a practical repair manual - and it succeeds at both. I bought a new copy recently. It was silly to buy a manual for a vehicle I don't own. Why did I do that? Is love too strong a word? How about loyalty? or appreciation?
Browsing through the section "Changes and New Ideas," on page 457, I found the solution to a problem I had 40-some years ago! The technique requires a special device - a wooded pencil! That one tip could have saved me (or could save you) from having to split the crankcase. If you drive and/or repair air-cooled VWs this book will be your most important tool.

Fantastic, must-need book for anybody who doesn't know how cars work but likes bugs.

A note for people choosing a seller: I ordered from allnewbooks, and the shipping took a few weeks, which was a bit irritating because I wanted to read the section "How to buy a Volkswagen" yknow, BEFORE I bought it.
