Review:Typophiles will eat this book up; however beginning and even seasoned designers might have troubles with this book. For one, it's all text. Hardly any diagrams or visual examples to be had. Are you kidding me? One of my crazy design teachers once said "If a book doesn't have pictures then don't read it!". I'm beginning to believe her. It's like reading the directions for the VCR and just as dry. If you've read any of Ellen Lupton's DIY books, then "The Elements of Typographic Style" has to be th... Read more
Review:Was hoping for a lovely coffee table book with large images of book covers.
Instead it is a poorly written book about books. As an artist, I was looking to this book for inspiration, however the best images are shrunken down to 1 or 2 inches tall, and the few large images are of perhaps the worst covers they had access to. wanna read a book about books? Maybe this will do. Hoping to enjoy the actual artwork of the books this book is about? Keep searching elsewhere, this is not your final stop... Read more
Review:A fantastic peek behind the curtain of production on one of my all-time favorite cartoons. Seeing the hidden roots of my favorite characters and the sheer amount of effort put into A:TLA is a real treat. The love the creators and crew have for this series is on full display and their enthusiasm jumps off the page. A must-have for any fan of animation. Read more
Review:I love the idea of anti-stress coloring. This book sounded perfect, and it mostly is. However, as others have mentioned, the binding is way too tight! It adds some stress because of having to constantly push open the pages to get to all of the details. I do like the small size of the book. Read more
Review:This book was written for me - the scary thing is, there must be a lot of me's out there for a book to be produced. As a 'share-shy' creative, Austin's book is a wealth of information and inspiration. Two things I have absorbed so far: 1) Utilise the global reach of the internet network by posting and sharing, it will surpass anything face to face networking can achieve. 2) Don't post/share anything you wouldn't want an employer or client to read. Review:Anyone looking for an explicit how-to-dress-well for our moment in history will be disappointed. The Lost Art of Dress is more of a cultural history -- that said, though, it contains fascinating history and an explanation of applying the principles of art to fashion. Further, the author doesn't just mindlessly slam today's "different" look, she explains WHY these are poor designs that don't really help women look their best, and she explains what does make a good design. You can then easily appl... Read more
Read more
Review:This book is essential to any artist interested in studying the principles of design as related to 2D compositions. It is an easy and entertaining read also. The concepts will inspire you to push every frame of a story to its greatest story-telling potential. I wish it was a bit longer, but that's just because I want to hear more of what he has to say. Review:A wonderful book for improving drawing technique! This is especially helpful for pros who have used line, (as I used to) This book has helped me tremendously in enhancing my style. Though I don't exclusively use the red pastel pencil Mr. Maughin uses, I modify his techniques to use in pencil, but I will use his technique faithfully when I get a chance to explore how to do it in his original style. If you are patient and commit some time, it's well worth it to learn his methods. Read more
