On the Run: Fugitive Life in an American City
On the Run: Fugitive Life in an American City

Review:Really good book on stereotypes and the way that social constructions are built in society that shape  people's perspectives of one. This book really conveys the idea that the class and area in which one is born into really does take play in their economic status when they're older of their lifestyle. had to read for a sociology class and really enjoyed it. Introduction to Sociology (Seagull Ninth Edition)
Introduction to Sociology (Seagull Ninth Edition)

Review:This is a typical mammoth intro textbook, which means it is far from adequate for intro courses. The authors assume that the student is going to devote eight hours a day to the intro course alone, a rather unrealistic expectation. There are dozens such textbooks, none practical. What the point in a many-page bibliography, which not even one in a thousand is even going to consult? It's about time we came down to earth, and started writing intro textbooks for intro courses. Great Issues of a Race from 4500 B.C. to 2000 A.D.
Great Issues of a Race from 4500 B.C. to 2000 A.D.

Review:This is a classic and original book about the constant dismissal of the great achievements of ancient-to-modern black, mainly African, society in mainstream academic discourse, and the clear contributions of foreign invasion and colonialism to the downfall of several great African civilizations. Chancellor Williams is a direct, inspirational, and emotional writer, and clearly exhibits some anger toward Europeans and Arabs (referred to as Asians in this book) for their continual subjugation of th... The Hoax of the Privatization Movement and the Danger to America's Public Schools
The Hoax of the Privatization Movement and the Danger to America's Public Schools

Review:The book gives quantitative and qualitative research to completely debunk testing and the corporate takeover of education. Every teacher and parent in America should read it. There would then be a groundswell of protest against the current trends in education"reform."

It is very readible and flows well, very enjoyable as well as informative. Read more

One Woman's Journey into Manhood and Back Again - Self-Made Man
One Woman's Journey into Manhood and Back Again - Self-Made Man

Review:I don't think anyone but an intelligent lesbian could have lived and objectively observed life as a man.

A man would not be the necessary outsider.

A heterosexual woman would not be able to be the necessary outsider who can critique how women pander to and enable men to be men. She would be too self-invested. Well, maybe a merciless, comedian-type could have. Read more

...And 131 More Warped Suggestions and Well-Intended Rants

Review:Most of the comments expressing disappointment here have to do with content. I bought the CD audio version and I am actually okay with the content. It's good not great, but certainly sufficient to hold my interest.

My disappointment relates to the poor enunciation of one of the reader / authors, Professor Steven D. Levitt. He is obviously an intelligent, insightful man but the CD suffers because he does not enunciate well. His speaking volume declines drastically at the end of senten... Read more

I Hate Everyone...Starting with Me
I Hate Everyone...Starting with Me

Review:This book is typical Joan Rivers - rude, raunchy and absolutely hysterical! If you do not like her brand of humor you may find this book offensive. Joan says exactly what's on her mind and does not spare any groups of people with her insults but if you like Joan Rivers, you will not stop laughing. Read more

Wally Lamb and the Women of York Correctional Institution (Testimonies from our Imprisoned Sisters)
Wally Lamb and the Women of York Correctional Institution (Testimonies from our Imprisoned Sisters)

Review:I became interested in this book after reading "I know this much is true" and "She's come undone". I was hesitant to buy it after reading that it was not written by Lamb but after reading some of the reviews I decided to take a chance on it. I finished the book in 2 days. I couldn't put it down.

The stories really are sometimes hard to hear, but it feels like something that needs to be heard. The stories in the book do humanize these writers who are criminals - but they are humans firs... Read more

Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century
Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century

Review:This is a fascinating book about a growing culture in this country. A good deal of the book follows people the author had gotten to know as she traveled with them living as a nomad. Although most of them were living as nomads because of unfortunate personal downturns, they have come up with amazing innovative ways to live. The author also points out that it is made more difficult for them because most cities don't have good legal places for people living in vehicles to park. Camping spots should... Read more

Review:The book was in horrible condition when I received it. Pages were folded, crinkled and the back cover is being held on by 2 small sloppy pieces of decorative tape. This book needs to be taken out of circulation. Read more
