This is a classic and original book about the constant dismissal of the great achievements of ancient-to-modern black, mainly African, society in mainstream academic discourse, and the clear contributions of foreign invasion and colonialism to the downfall of several great African civilizations. Chancellor Williams is a direct, inspirational, and emotional writer, and clearly exhibits some anger toward Europeans and Arabs (referred to as Asians in this book) for their continual subjugation of the black race through history. He is quite articulate and thoroughly covers all areas of Africa and their rise and fall at the hands of foreign invaders.

This book starts out with information on how Asian and European invaders penetrated Africa by the use of religion.
The Cross of Christianity and the Muslim Crescent was used to convert Africans from their original religion. If they
were not of Christianity or Muslim they were consider Pagan and therefore required to disavow their whole culture.
This book reveal how Asians took the daughters of Africans via invasions and raids and use them as concubines, this is what some would call sex slaves which created a group of mulattoes that did not accept their African heritage.
A lot of this material covered the areas that is now called Egypt and Ethiopia. I like the last two chapters which are chapter 14 and chapter 15 because they contain an action plan to solve some of the problems noted as causing the destruction of the Black Civilization.

This book is excellent and detailed. You must be somewhat educated to read it. I suggest using a highlighter or underlining in colored pen. This is not an anti-white people book. It describes, in great detail, how internal forces, the weather, and other countries meddling let to the Africa we have now. I learned more from this book than any history class, and I LOVE history. I have never heard anyone breakdown the population and struggles of Upper and Lower Egypt. Nor did I know that each had it's own line of Pharaohs. Stories of royalty, struggles, our original religious beliefs (not Islam by the way), and the law of the land, were told in a way I have never seen. I wish the religion was discussed in more detail, but that was the only thing that didn't have at least a full chapter on. Excellent read for anyone who truly loves history. Every person descendent from Africa should read this to dispell the rumours and false narratives we have been fed by our former masters and those that conquered our people thousands of years ago.

Read this book during college and loaned it to one of my students who did not return it. So happy to have it back in my library. Powerful and thought provoking.

Obviously, anything the presents an image of black people that doesnt fall within a certain narrative will be trolled, shouted down and arrogantly attacked from the start. Ignore those reviews which are often written by those who did not even bother to read the book. Black history month in america is centered around and dominated by the brutality of slavery and then ultimately the integrationists efforts during Civil rights. Thats not our history but it is one chapter of whats been done to us. It should be called "African american" history... If you want to learn about our history BEFORE we were forced to survive the middle passage, going back several thousand years while possibly learning something about yourself and your culture in the process then this is the book you need to buy. I've read much on the topic and to this day Chancellor Williams has yet to be surpassed in both his research and his delivery.

This has been one awesome book. Its clear ,concise, factual information of African and non-african relations. Its cleared up many holes in my stories over the years I have told. Gives solid historical facts in chronological order even some predynastic periods.I hope to find other books written by
Chancellor Williams.
Thanks Again

I'm not into writing extremely long reviews. But I will say this, this book is a must read for every African American. Very educational and great insight into the great achievements of black civilization. Chancellor Williams is brilliant.
