Our heroine Jessamyn Jaarda wants to be a pilot more than anything, so she can fly the raiding missions to Terra and do important and adventurous things. At the start of the novel Jess is a rule-breaker, whose biggest concern is her alter-abled brother Ethan's mental comfort and getting a piece of ice for her Mom's second birthday gift (everyone has two birthdays a year due to Mars' different rotation cycle from Earth). But when she is suspended from the ... Read more
Review:An outstanding read from Maybe with two remarkable major characters in David Dixon and Laney. Mayne explores the space tech of the next decade in crafting a hybrid spy thriller/murder mystery in this sequel to Station Breaker. I eagerly anticipate the return of these characters! Read more
Review:I see some negative reviews below this one and frankly, I'm stunned. There never has been, and never will be, a smarter piece of speculative fiction written than Gene Wolfe's masterful series. The book influenced me so strongly as a young author that to this day I pay homage to it. People ask me why I call horses "Destriers" in Guns of Seneca 6. Book of the New Sun. In fact, the rare metal that all of the m... Read more
Review:While I cannot say this book is the best that I have ever read, it definitely ranks in the top 98% or so. Gene Wolfe delivers a stunning narrative of Earth in the far-distant future. Although Shadow and Claw (the first two books in the series) have a strong fantasy/science fiction edge, they surpass the traditional mold of Tolkein and take the genre to a new contemporary level. This is one of the novels that bridges the gap between Science Fiction and legitimate Lichrachure. If you have... Read more
Review:I liked this book a lot. As an American gun owner I find it weird how many people in the world know nothing about guns. They have a good plan but of course some sissy people are going to ruin everything being little poops. every one should be able to defend themselves and this is a great example why. Can't wait to read the next book. Read more
Review:I enjoyed the story. I was disappointed in the ending. The reason is all the loose ends. It almost feels like one of those serials they showed in theaters in the 30's and 40's. Even though the author says he has wrapped this up, there are a number of things that remain outstanding. Read more
Review:It was okay but kind of disappointing. I think that it was written to put an end to these characters story lines without actually killing them off, which is ok because I don't want to see them die but other than that it didn't seem to have much of a point. Read more
Review:This is a decent "modern guy in an alternate history" story. The modern guy happens to be a chemist, kind of like the hero from Frankowski's "Cross-Time Engineer" (but without the constant sexualization of 14yo girls, and racism, so +1). And he winds up in a disorganized kingdom which is being attacked by a much more powerful militant culture (kind of like the hero from "Cross-Time Engineer"). And he makes a boatload of money, then starts industrializing the kingdom he lands in (kind of like...)... Read more
Review:This book continued the overall saga in great fashion. The main characters continue their key rolls and we as observers, come to cheer them on as the try to pull the divergent clans together and strengthen their defenses. I can't wait for the next book in the series. Read more
Review:The story slowly proceeds from where book 1 ended. Written in the same style, a bit more is happening. If you like book 1, you like book 2.
I do hope the protagonist starts using his brain a bit. He keeps talking about attacks from the sea, so why does he stick around at the coast? And for aliens not caring about his fate and worried about the impact his presence will have on the culture and technology, he happened to land in the exact right spot... Read more
