Science Fiction
Review:Excellent yarn in the line of the Hornblower saga but hundred of years in the future. Lots of space battles and a interesting heroine.
Howewer, long chapters are lost with long and boring "political" discussions. I like science fiction and Weber writes good one, but he deviates with "political science 1.o1" of future star kingdoms. Read more
Review:From OldRetiredMilitary:
I really wanted to like this book, but I just could not get past the extreme Napoleonic era fighting sails motif. I've read a ton of science fiction starting in 1951 (Rocket Ship Galileo by Heinlein) and a lot of fighting sails novels starting in 1970 (Hornblower series while I was in Vietnam). I thoroughly enjoy each genre, but bringing forward almost everything from British warships of 1770-1820 to the era of a space navy just didn't work for me. I have seen the ... Read more
Review:I have just finished this book, and I have to agree with the majority of reviewers. This is not as good as previous books in the series. The biggest problem is that all authors need an editor who will tell them when they have gone off the rails - in this book, it doesn't look like it was edited at all. Every internal dialogue of the characters, every opportunity to explain their motivations, every last emotional detail was included in this book. After awhile, I got so weary with the build-up to ... Review:Any one remember the little old lady looking at her hamburger and asking where's the BEEF? There was another story about the restaurant manager asking a patron. How did you find your Streak sir? With that the gentleman said well I just picked up the pickle and their it was.
So I might say Steak=Honor=Beef. So gimmie da BEEF.

Review:This is the fourth book in a series. It tie together the three previous books and sets the stage for future books. There are at least ten more books in this series. I can't wait to read the nest one. Read more
Review:Having become obsessed with Weber's Honorverse, I have come to have pretty high standards. Over time, readers come to feel like they're living on the planets and ships in the books. It isn't just a story line that Weber and the other authors have created over the years, it's a history. Going back and filling in the gaps in the historical narrative is challenging, but I feel that A Call to Duty accomplished it's task, certainly as a first installment of a historical narrative. Worth a read for su... Read more
Review:Formula space opera. Officers on old ship facing unexpected attack by enemy forces. Usual personal stories of various characters. Space battles are ok, but nothing out of the ordinary. There are at least six similar series going as I write. Pleasent read, but not outstanding in any way. Read more
Review:To much of this book, this story, has been tòd before in other honerverse books and short stories. There are new big events, but not enough to justify a novel. Any more honor verse books like this and I'm checking out. Read more
Review:Maybe "in numrous conversations born" would be a better title? Lucky the author is good at dialogue! There maybe action later but after encountering about 400 new characters and no action whatsoever, by chapter 6, I was getting really bored. I started flicking ahead at chapter 2 - this is a bad sign. There maybe some fury or action and even some fury later in th book? I was not patient enough to find it. Maybe the action is in book 2? Maybe I need to be more patient? Clearly many other reviewers... Read more
Review:As I've been waiting for this book a long time, I must say, not up to Weber's best or even his middle level.
Having said that, I realize that this is half a book, since the publisher decreed books have to be under a certain length. But still no real action. Just umpteen pages of review and setup, but no meat to this book.
Action slow and incomplete, no surprises, no nothing. Blow up the SLN Fleet, ho humm another day. What everyone expects happens.
