The Great Hinckley Firestorm of 1894 - Under a Flaming Sky
The Great Hinckley Firestorm of 1894 - Under a Flaming Sky

Review:Researched in great detail, this story is ... gripping, distressing, engrossing, relentlessly horrifying. It was like I couldn't look away from this awful thing, yet I could only deal with one chapter at a sitting; it was just heartbreaking. A "perfect storm" of fire conditions. And you can scarcely believe that anyone managed to survive. (The author's great-grandfather did not.) Along the way, you get an education in weather, late-1800s logging practices, fire physics, human behavior in crisis,... Read more

and the Remaking of the Civilized World - Sinking Cities
and the Remaking of the Civilized World - Sinking Cities

Review:Jeff Goodell is a journalist who travels to low lying areas (e.g., Miami Beach, Venice, Italy, and the Netherlands) and speaks to local experts, politicians and others about their local rising water problems, flooding, etc. and the prospects for the future given sea level rise. (Interestingly, these conversations occur in such places as a Mexican restaurant and a white Range Rover, which the driver says is good for getting around in high water.) This is not a science book. Moreover, the autho... Read more

Birds Of Florida Field Guide
Birds Of Florida Field Guide

Review:My 4th grader used this in conjuction with Jeannie Fullbrights Apologia Zoology 1. This is a wonderful book and it is very easy to use and is laid out by color. You can identify a bird quickly with this book and it gave my daughter a love of the different breeds. The book also has many helpful notes like if the bird is a native or migratory and more. It's the perfect identification book for any age. Read more

Bird Bingo
Bird Bingo

Review:Wonderful game for all ages. Beautiful illustrations and a booklet that tells you a bit about each bird. Kids love the colorful pictures and it's amazing how quickly they memorize complicated names and the accompanying information. We get groups ranging in age from 4-75 playing, and everyone loves it.
It also serves to demystify some "naughty" words. The first couple of times you name a bird with a double-entendre name, the kids snicker, but after a few rounds, it's just another kind of anima... Read more

Birds of Wisconsin Field Guide, Second Edition

Kaufman Field Guide to Birds of North America
Kaufman Field Guide to Birds of North America

Review:This is my third copy of this excellent book, which I use as my ;primary resource for identifying birds. Kaufman is the best, in my opinion -- he combines the benefits of photos and paintings by digitally adjusting the photos to reflect the most typical specimens. Read more

Birds of Pennsylvania Field Guide, Second Edition
Birds of Pennsylvania Field Guide, Second Edition

Review:I really like this book. First, it only lists birds of PA, so I don't have to page through other bird species when trying to locate a bird reference in my back yard. Second, the pictures in the book are outstanding, making bird identification a snap. Also, the birds are listed in order of color, with separate identification for male and female, where there is a difference in their color. Read more

Birds of the Carolinas Field Guide, Second Edition
Birds of the Carolinas Field Guide, Second Edition

Review:Great little bird book for Carolinians - when I saw a neighbor's book, I immediately searched Amazon and ordered my own. Color-coded arrangement makes it easy to find what you're looking for, and especially helpful to have an inset photo of the mate if it is a different color. Nice full-page photos. Read more

Bird Songs: 250 North American Birds in Song
Bird Songs: 250 North American Birds in Song

Review:I had already purchased this book for myself and have enjoyed listening to the birds (it's a talking book) and identifying the birds. The only drawback is that it's too big to carry if going on a hike to birdwatch.

I ordered 3 more books for Christmas presents this year. I'm sure the recipients will enjoy it too! Read more

Birds of Indiana Field Guide
Birds of Indiana Field Guide

Review:Not everyone needs or wants a full-blown field guide to every North American bird, which can sometimes be overwhelming or too detailed. Birds of Indiana is an excellent primer in helping learn about and identify native birds. What could be easier--birds are arranged by color and then by size (small to big). One big picture of each bird (along with a smaller opposite sex insert) on one side of the page is accompanied by pertinent statistics on the other side. Helpful "compare" features pinpoi...
