The Siren
The Siren

Review:Ok I loved the Siren! It is a very unique type of story. Something I could never come up with on my own! I loved the sparks of comedy in it! Keira has an awesome sense of humor that spilled over into her book. I also enjoyed that the main charater had the same name as me only spelled different I thought that would never happen!

This was a great book that I'll deffintely recommend to others! Read more

Through the Woods
Through the Woods

Review:Graphic Novels are so much fun to read, and Through the Woods was fantastic! I think this book will appeal to readers young and old alike. It was surprisingly spooky in some tales, which was an added delight. I was not expecting to get goosbumps while reading. I sat down and read the book and I as soon as I was done I went over to my cousins house to look through it with her son that loves all things ookey and spooky. He is in second grade and he loved the book! I couldn't even get him to give i... Read more

To Kill a Kingdom
To Kill a Kingdom

Review:One thing I really liked about this story is that everyone was a killer. Ever since she was old enough to hunt for hearts on her birthday (a ritual of the sirens), Lira has always chosen princes. Elian has taken it upon himself to travel the seas, hunting sirens. While Lira is known by the humans as Prince’s Bane, Elian is known as The Siren Killer. Both of which have seen, and been responsible for, their fair share of deaths. I just liked that this story didn’t focus on “perfect” characters. In... Read more

Wires and Nerve: Volume 1
Wires and Nerve: Volume 1

Review:3.5/5 Stars

I am so happy that Iko is finally getting her own story and I love that it's in this new format. The art by Douglas Holgate is great, and while not everyone is depicted the way I pictured them, it all looks cohesive. Story wise I like where things are headed but it took too long to really get into it. I'm glad Meyer is focusing on Iko's inner workings and how she perceives life and how others perceive her. Hopefully the next one will cover more and give us a satisfying conclus... Read more

The Sleeper and the Spindle
The Sleeper and the Spindle

Review:Zombies and ghouls in a fairy tale?! Ah, the signs of our times ... A well told retelling of Sleeping Beauty with lots of fun surprises, accompanied by Chris Riddell's gorgeous, elaborately penciled (or is it inked?) illustrations. Read more

Princess of Thorns

Review:Originally reviewed at http://www.shaelit.com/2014/12/review-princess-of-thorns-by-stacey-jay/

Read the book. That’s all. Read the book. It’s wonderful and swoony and hilarious and made my toes curl. Read the book. What? You want to know more than that? Fiiiiiiiine. But get your ponchos because the fangirl tsunami is a-comin’.

Princess of Thorns is not a Sleeping Beauty retelling. Instead, it reframes the Sleeping Beauty myth (instead of a happy ending, Sleeping Beauty marries a sp... Read more

Spelled (The Storymakers)
Spelled (The Storymakers)

Review:An ill-worded wish is worse than a curse...

SPELLED by Betsy Schow is an enchanting, farcical YA fractured fairy tale. It is the story of Dorthea, the Crown Princess of Emerald, and Prince Kato.

As the story opens, we learn that the heroine is magically imprisoned at her castle and not allowed to be near flames because of a curse:
Our family became spelled after my ancestor pixed off two evil witch sisters. The witches’ curse was supposed to doom my great- great- great grandmothe... Read more

As Old as Time: A Twisted Tale
As Old as Time: A Twisted Tale

Review:It was an interesting approach to the story, explaining why and what led up to the curse, but the ending was lame. Sorry, but it should have been Rosalind who goes out so she could completely right her wrong. Read more

A Whole New World: A Twisted Tale
A Whole New World: A Twisted Tale

Review:With a retelling of a well known (and excellent!) Disney film, where this time the villain succeeds, I think I was expecting the villain's point of view to be foremost. But this is still Aladdin and Jasmine's story, and I think that detracts a little from the development of this alternate storyline.

Jafar is still an utter villain with little explanation about his motives or his background beyond what was said in the film and I was disappointed by his lack of character development. He i... Read more
