Review:Since it was proven later that Mr. Manchester fabricated much of this story as his own experience, I was disappointed. It still would have been a great work if he had not tried to possess it as his own story and had just presented as a tortured look back at the Pacific war through his interpretation of the period and the people when revisited during the contemporary time of the book's release. Review:I picked this book up with much anticipation after having seen the HBO series "The Pacific", but I really wish I had looked into this account of his life before I bothered, as it was not what I was expecting at all, and let me down from an historical standpoint.
I found it rather off-putting, and a huge breach of historical accuracy that a book could be written posthumously, in first person, by someone who had no first-hand contact with the subject. It compromises the integrity of the bo... Read more
Review:Graphic writing. It was like you were there. I got a real understanding of the fighting these young men did and the bond that lives with them forever. I can almost understand why they don't talk about what happened, it was just too much for any human to dwell upon. Read more
Review:I have great respect for the men and women involved in WWll. I have read many books about their bravery. This book reveals much of their personal feelings. It helps to humanize their sacrifices. That was my parents generation. I wish young people today could have the respect I have for this generation! This book might help! Read more
Review:My approach to reading One Bullet Away came through my battalion's e-mail which arrived one day with the audible ding I'm so used to hearing. "Marine Officer speaking about Iraq and his book at Georgetown" was the subject, and the body continued explaining Fick's tour followed by, "even though this isn't open to the public, you should take advantage of this. It should be really interesting."
And interesting it was. When I met him Fick seemed to be a rather cool, modest charecter. He remin... Read more
Review:This is PFC Eugene Sledge's other book. "WITH THE OLD BREED AT PELLEAU AND OKINAWAY" was Gene Sledge's masterpiece that told the story of his combat in WWII. READ IT!! This was the story of occupation duty in North China after the end of WWII and his return to Alabama after the war. After watching THE PACIFIC miniseries on DVD, I wanted more depth of knowledge. Told from the rear ranks, this Old Marine Sergeant thoroughly enjoyed the story of the North China Marines, post WWII. Read more
Review:Thoroughly enjoyable fast paced read highlighting the dangers and discomforts of submariners during WWII. A part of history shared by brave men on both sides. The only disappointment
nt I found in Mr. Gruber' s expressions of devout patriotism was any remorse for Germany's evils that came to light after the war.

Review:I bought this collection of stories primarily for the George R.R. Martin "Mystery Knight" story, which is easily the best of his Dunk and Egg stories. Now, reading through all the other great stories on here I haven't found one bad one yet. Each story is gripping, well written and truly unique. I highly recommend Warriors. Read more
Review:Pretty solid book. I generally enjoyed it, but man the last 1/4 of the book is insanely slow. And one of the characters is completely disconnected and not really needed (but her parts are generally short). Really looking forward to the next couple as I heard they are the meat of the series. Review:Banks Culture novel, Matter is the 8th book in The Culture series. It is some 200,000 words long with a section of 4,000 appendices and glossaries. It's so intricate that even in its intricacy it’s multifarious. It's filled with buzzwords and characters that disappear for ages and then come back, with lots of recurrences and - forwards. The story incorporates various civilizations at different stages of technological development. Shellworlds are ancient simulated planets comprising of nested con... Read more
