Broken Angels: A Novel (Takeshi Kovacs)
Broken Angels: A Novel (Takeshi Kovacs)

Review:Having purchased and read both "Broken Angels" and "Altered Carbon" based on recommendations and reviews here, I feel compelled to offer this. I found both books tense, original, and well written, however the author seems committed to including very explicit sex scenes that strike me as unnecessary and graphic to the point of pornography. Usually I pass on books to friends and my teenage children. These won't make the rounds and I'm honestly wondering if I'll even keep them in my collection. Too... Read more

Excession (Culture series)
Excession (Culture series)

Review:This is a wonderful novel. Banks writes with an intelligence that gives life even to instant messaging exchanges between artificial intelligence space ship Minds. His ability to envision technology without getting caught up in describing how it works lets the imagination run riot, and his creates a spectacular punk ballet across an interstellar canvas that is full of mischief, surprises and fascination. There is something unconventional, almost subversive about the way Banks chooses to tell a st... Read more

Use Of Weapons (Culture series)
Use Of Weapons (Culture series)

Review:Pretty solid book. I generally enjoyed it, but man the last 1/4 of the book is insanely slow. And one of the characters is completely disconnected and not really needed (but her parts are generally short). Really looking forward to the next couple as I heard they are the meat of the series. A Culture Novel (Culture series) - The Player Of Games

Review:Utopian sci fi - it held my interest sufficiently that I will purchase another - I did not consider the characterizations to be very deep - that is ok though - it is enough to create a world to ponder - Read more

Look To Windward (Culture series)
Look To Windward (Culture series)

Review:Mysterious, subtle and thoughtful. Less of a mindless space adventure story with juvenile one dimensional space morons(i.e. Hamilton's Reality Dysfunction behemoth) than a crime fiction novel of sorts that moves with wit and finess, inexorably towards its ultimate conclusion.
Quilan is a Chel. A member of a nation moving out of the shadow of a sudden and violent civil war. It's relationship with the vast Culture civilisation is ambiguous. Quilan is sent as an emissary to a Culture orbital to ... Read more

Cyborg Legacy: A Fallen Empire Novel
Cyborg Legacy: A Fallen Empire Novel

Review:I enjoyed this glimpse into Leonidas & Alisa's life - all settled down with kids and enjoying the life they've carved out for themselves. Of course this book wasn't strictly about them, it followed Jasim and I really liked him. His doubts and insecurities as a soldier/cyborg rang true and I liked that he had grown and matured and even did so during the book. I'd definitely like to know how he does in life now that he has more of a direction to move in and I want good things for him! Hope he'... Read more
