The Varieties of Scientific Experience - A Personal View of the Search for God
The Varieties of Scientific Experience - A Personal View of the Search for God

Review:Some years back I set out to read as many books as I could that purported to speak in favour and against the existence of God, and see where the evidence led. I won't bother you with my findings, we all have to make that journey ourselves.
With the greatest respect for Mr. Sagan, his arguments were very simplistic, superficial, specious, and, quite frankly, not worthy of being called scientific (alliteration not intended). This is not meant to demean the great man, but from reading numerous b... Read more

A Vision of the Human Future in Space - Pale Blue Dot

Review:This profound Carl Sagan book does not include the wonderful color illustrations as the earlier version contains. Consequently, it is like a National Graphic Magazine without the pictures.

I love the words of Dr. Sagan, but words plus the spectacular pictures truly make "music."

Following is the edition you should get. I threw away the "Pale Blue Dot" paperback I received yesterday and today ordered a used hardback:

Gene Editing and the Unthinkable Power to Control Evolution
Gene Editing and the Unthinkable Power to Control Evolution

Review:I found the book very fascinating. The possibilities with this discovery are unlimited. I found myself not wanting to put the book down. Some of the more technical aspects needed to be explained better for the average person to understand. Read more

Paul Gautschi Grows Superior Food With Much Less Work By...

Review:I have planted a vegetable garden almost every year for the past 30 years. Over the years, I've read many gardening books and tried various methods to get better results and to lighten the work. Unfortunately I never found any method that really did what it claimed it would do after reading Growing Food God's Way, I'm so excited to try this simple method of gardening. I have used mulch in my garden before, but now I realize it wasn't nearly thick enough to control the weeds. As I'm getting older... Read more

The Brotherhood of the Screaming Abyss
The Brotherhood of the Screaming Abyss

Review:There are a number of reasons why this project had to be crowdfunded instead of supported by a legitimate publisher. It's just not very good. It's going to be interesting only to people who are already big "fans" of Terrance McKenna to the point that they're interested in a lot of minutiae about the relationship between the two brothers. Otherwise. really not interesting or well written. Read more

Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning (Information Science and Statistics)
Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning (Information Science and Statistics)

Review:It's hard to figure out who would actually benefit from this book - it amounts to seven hundred pages of equations interrupted by blocks of text that fail to provide any intuition whatever for the techniques they are describing, and the occasional graph which is remarkable in the universe of graphs as being scarcely more informative than the equations it is meant to illustrate.

Seriously, you have to wonder wtf Bishop thought he was doing here. As a catalog of equations for people who al... Read more

Six Innovations that Made the Modern World - How We Got to Now

Review:Another deep-thinking look at the world that, like "Freakonomics" and "Outliers," make you see familiar parts of your life from a new angle, with a new and (hopefully) improved perspective. My high school students have loved all three books. Read more

Consciousness Explained (Penguin Science)
Consciousness Explained (Penguin Science)

Review:A person less sure of themself might have titled this work, A Theory of Consciousness. Not so Daniel Dennett. Here flat out he says Consciousness Explained. That alone demands you read this book if you are the least bit curious. Your curiosity will be rewarded.

While the text is dense it is not ponderous. It is filled with examples, details, and descriptions. All are well reasoned and thoroughly researched. As one from the humanities with a deep interest in science, this philosophical wor... Read more

Review:Loved how lively the family was. I could envision each member of the family and friends. Laughed out loud at the antic of Gerry and his adventures. I will have to say that sometimes the descriptive language was a bit too long. Overall I loved it and would recommend it. Read more
