Review:I like how the author built the characters and has kept them true. Plausible story line with no superheroes keeps my interest. Though Sarge's groups is close, they are not invincible. Good editing. See you in the next book. Read more
Review:I like the pace of the book. Very believable characters and little overdone language. Mark is smart but not full of himself. Just typical middle aged man that just happens to be a private investigator Read more
Review:As someone who returned to my church and faith after years of soul-searching, I felt strong enough in my personal beliefs to wade through this story about a controversial subject. I love books that take you on a journey, out from the armchair and out of your comfort zone. The Witch of Portobello does exactly that with a unique format of various characters narrating each chapter, creating a sort of soulful alchemy focused on the main character. Unlike the literal excursion in The Alchemist, this ... Read more
Review:Excellent, page turner! I am not qualified to write a raving review that makes you want to read this book. How can I tell you about the intricate plots without giving away important details? I can only write that it was a challenge to put this book down, but I had to because sometimes I didn't want to know what was coming next. I was fearful that it would be different than what I hoped for.
Besides the paradox of culture in the old country and the new homeland, I enjoyed reading the thought p... Read more
Review:The writing style is simple. A lot of telling and not much showing, in short sentences with simple words. Details of the times and places created a believable Irish Catholic world. I appreciated those details, but felt I was learning about this family more than I was caring about them. Read more
Review:I liked this story a lot! Interesting constant flow of past & present time, great character building with story & sub-stories. A page-turner that finds yourself also turning back-pages to re-connect your own thoughts of where this story may go & then try to tie the pieces together! Read more
Review:The Immortalists by Chloe Benjamin tell the fine, but often sad, tale of four siblings who learn as young children the exact date on which each will die. A Romani fortuneteller delivers this information and leaves the children to grow up knowing what no one is ever intended to know.
The book brought to mind Robert McCammon's book Boy's Life in the way that it presents us with extraordinary events and talents as almost banal. Ms. Benjamin is skillful as a writer and helps us to suspend dis... Read more
Review:I was disappointed by this book - I've always been a big Wally Lamb fan. I guess it's his foray into the supernatural that got to me, even though we had some mutual memories of growing up in the '50s and '60s that I enjoyed. Read more
Review:This should not be categorized as historical fiction. Or literature, for that matter. What a colossal waste of time. Terrible story development, unbelievably bad writing. Do not waste your time - I'm so sorry that I did. Read more
