The Lessons of History
The Lessons of History

Review:This book is very thought-provoking and is strongly recommended for those liberals who advocate saving as many people as possible in any disaster and especially those in social services in the belief that saving everyone will make this planet a better place. Read more

The Untold Story of American Submarine Espionage - Blind Man's Bluff
The Untold Story of American Submarine Espionage - Blind Man's Bluff

Review:The story of the Navy's achievements, both technical and operational, deserved better. Although I found some of the content highly interesting, both the information and the enjoyment were diminished by a number of shortcomings.

The stories of some of the actual intelligence operations and missions are incredibly interesting. They deserved better. Perhaps part of the problem is that the writers came from the NYT where they typically write stories about subjects where they have greater fami... Read more

Who We Are and What We Stand For - The American Spirit
Who We Are and What We Stand For - The American Spirit

Review:I have read and enjoyed many of Mr. McCullough's books, and this one is no exception. The speeches all encourage the understanding of history, but each is unique and I learned a great deal. It was also a quick read - the individual speeches are just the right length for the bits of "free reading" time I have every day. I recommended this book to several friends, all of whom enjoyed it as much as I did. Read more

Everyday Zen: Love and Work (Plus)
Everyday Zen: Love and Work (Plus)

Review:One of the best books I've ever read. It was difficult for me to finish only because it's so profound. Every few pages I had to stop and spend a few days thinking about what I'd just read. I feel like buying this book for everyone I know. Buy it for yourself; you won't regret it. Read more

Everyday - How to Argue & Win Every Time
Everyday - How to Argue & Win Every Time

Review:I expected this book to have a little more structure in building and executing an argument but it does not do that. It instructs the reader to be passionate, tell a powerful story, and speak from the heart. This all makes sense but I was looking for a little more practical advice. There are some good segments but in many chapters I found myself wondering if what was written was the author's stream of consciousness at that point in time. Read more

Exploring the Architecture of Everyday Life - Brief Edition

Review:I had to take a sociology class to fulfill my gen ed requirement and this is the book they used. I've never really had an interest in sociology until I read this book. After I read this book, it changed the way I viewed the world.. but no too much =P Read more

The Path of Mindfulness in Everyday Life - Peace Is Every Step
The Path of Mindfulness in Everyday Life - Peace Is Every Step

Review:I bought 5 books to give as presents. I felt this book truly gave me peace and reminded me to slow my daily pace and smell the roses, so to speak. A lovely book. To be read in small bits and thought about. I use it as a meditation tool. Read more

The Case against Religion and for Humanism - The God Argument
The Case against Religion and for Humanism - The God Argument

Review:I had a hard time following this even though I enjoy hearing these arguments. In my opinion the author crammed 20 pages of writing into 75 pages. I admittedly didn't (couldn't) read the second half except for sections that looked interesting to me. I have no doubt that this is a well written argument but it just did not appeal to me. The Case Against God (The Skeptic's Bookshelf)
The Case Against God (The Skeptic's Bookshelf)

Review:This book undermines extreme religious fundamentalism, and in doing so, Smith has an easy ride. It deserves 5 stars because Smith makes such a strong and worthy case against the narrow and intolerant attitudes and perspectives of fundamentalism. Yet undermining extreme fundamentalism and Biblical literalism, is by no mean the same as undermining the deeper Spirit and message of Christianity.
Smith comes nowhere near achieving this, and as it happens, Smith's perspective, attitudes and tone ar... Read more

Review:Annie literally took me back to years of bad relationships, bad decisions, and years of manipulation. I loved hearing her story as she went from abused and manipulated to strong and valiant. Anyone working in the sex industry or looking to help people being sex trafficked, this is a must read. Thank you Annie for sharing your life's story! I am a life that needed to hear it. Read more
