Madame Bovary (Penguin Modern Classics)
Madame Bovary (Penguin Modern Classics)

Review:Like french movies, this book was not about happy endings and a happy storyline. It was a sad, raw, human book. As much as I was disgusted by the actions of the some of the characters, I still enjoyed every minute of reading this book because the storyline is interesting and has a great flow. Read more

with an introduction by Peter Ackroyd - The Mystery of Edwin Drood
with an introduction by Peter Ackroyd - The Mystery of Edwin Drood

Review:I almost bought this edition before double-checking and, sure enough, I already have it: it is the famous "Completed by the Spirit-Pen of Charles Dickens" version. Which is also available in the "Droodiana" section of the Delphi e-edition of Dickens's Complete Works, along with three other versions from the 1870s. (My favorite is the earliest, the parody almost in the style of MAD magazine, "The Cloven Foot.") A printer, James self-published his version, which is an interesting one, even though ... Read more

The Sea (Vintage Classic Iris Murdoch Series) - The Sea
The Sea (Vintage Classic Iris Murdoch Series) - The Sea

Review:For first-time Murdoch readers, like myself, this novel is a bit of a chore. She seems to be square in the Post-Modernist camp on this one, challenging one's every sensibility through her odd assortment of characters that emerge from the pen of Charles Arrowby. This cynical English playwright is trying to piece his life together and has chosen a remote seaside town to pen his autobiography. Little does he know that an old flame had similarly migrated to this town, reawakening the sweet bird o... Read more

Shades of Trust: Trust Series books 1-4

Review:Título: Uber trilogy
I don't know why this trilogy is not on more book lists and is not a blockbuster... It should be. It’s great for book club discussions as it brings many messages and lessons in a delightful, hot, intriguing, captivating and bewitching plot. Yes! All those words, yet not enough.

Vanity Fair (Penguin Classics)
Vanity Fair (Penguin Classics)

Review:This novel illustrates well the destructive power of vanity and selfishness. I find it more interesting when you consider the background of the author. His father died when Thackeray was six years old. As he was being sent back to England at that time, the ship stopped at the Isle of St. Helena, where Napoleon was pointed out to him wasting away in prison. When Thackeray finally received his father's inheritance at the age of 21 he squandered the money with gambling. Read more

Schooled
Schooled

Review:Schooled was a fabulous debut by Piper Lawson. Alexis is in her senior year of college and has everything figured out. Once she graduates, she is going to launch a clothing line with her best friend, Ava. They decide to focus on school and their business and swear off guys and relationships for the year. Everything is fine until Ava's younger brother Dylan transfers to their school and begins spending time with Lex. Although she tries to remain just friends with Dylan, she finds it harder as tim... In Harmony
In Harmony

Review:Emma Scott has yet AGAIN totally captured my heart and mind with her incredible writing, and pulled me into a book so completely that my world ceased to exist during the time it took me to finish.

That is not hyperbole.

In Harmony tells the story of Willow, a teenage girl carrying the weight of a traumatic experience, unable to trust in the people around her. Her parents don't notice her pain, and in fact, they castigate her for it. She is increasingly withdrawn, and doesn't think ... Read more

The Glass Bead Game (Vintage Classics)
The Glass Bead Game (Vintage Classics)

Review:So disappointed - bought this solely because it won a Pulitzer. Writing was heavy handed and the vocabulary condescending. Seriously, how many times is too many to use the work "bourgeoisie" in the first few pages. Compared to elegant Siddhartha, this book is a mess. Read more
