The Winner Stands Alone: A Novel (P.S.)
The Winner Stands Alone: A Novel (P.S.)

Review:My first Coelho book - I enjoyed the beginning of it, I enjoyed the characters, the setting, etc. He writes very well - easy to read. Just not sure the book "works." I am looking forward to reading other books by him. Read more

The Zahir: A Novel of Obsession
The Zahir: A Novel of Obsession

Review:This book irritated me. There were sections I wanted to keep reading to learn the outcome BUT what a dissatisfied ending! To me, the characters were either selfish or in the case of Maria, a big masochist. Come on! Self esteem woman! Short, unexpectedly ridiculous! The alchemist? Excellent- a completely different and satisfying experience. Read more

Eleven Minutes: A Novel (P.S.)
Eleven Minutes: A Novel (P.S.)

Review:I'm probably really not going to say anything new to contrast all the other reviews of this book. It's a great work that is truly inspirational and offers, through a substantive narrative fiction, a justification for trying to be as awesome and happy as possible at all times. Definitely worth the read. Read more

The Witch of Portobello: A Novel (P.S.)
The Witch of Portobello: A Novel (P.S.)

Review:As someone who returned to my church and faith after years of soul-searching, I felt strong enough in my personal beliefs to wade through this story about a controversial subject. I love books that take you on a journey, out from the armchair and out of your comfort zone. The Witch of Portobello does exactly that with a unique format of various characters narrating each chapter, creating a sort of soulful alchemy focused on the main character. Unlike the literal excursion in The Alchemist, this ... Read more

Those in Peril
Those in Peril

Review:A very topical subject which must have been carefully and diligently researched by the author. Then again I would have expected nothing less from this author. The action is very gripping and is sustained throughout. Read more

Steal My Breath
Steal My Breath

Review:A standalone contemporary romance, Steal My Breath starts out with no hints of what this would evolve into. It was an unusual storyline but with plenty of hotness and tender moments.
Callie has had the hots for Luke, bar owner and her best friend’s boss for over a year. But Luke is standoffish and keeps her at arm’s length. There is no denying they have an attraction to each other but little does Callie know just what Luke is dealing with in his life away from the bar.

It is difficult ... Read more

Read more

The Savage Detectives: A Novel
The Savage Detectives: A Novel

Review:I, like many of the other readers that have reviewed Roberto Bolano's The Savage Detectives here, was utterly blown away by this book. It was my second experience with Bolano, behind 2666, and I feel that I am now hooked for life. But I won't go into my rave of the book here so much, since there are already plenty of good reviews out there.

Instead, many people might have come across all the buzz concerning Bolano and are wondering whether or not his work will fit them well. My first resp... Read more

Candide (Dover Thrift Editions)
Candide (Dover Thrift Editions)

Review:A great little satire filled with wit, sarcasm and ultimately distress. Candide lives a life of artificial optimism which ultimately turns to distress, rejection of religion and a decision to "cultivate one's garden". Candide Finds an idyllic place called El Dorado and leaves there a very wealthy man only to slide to near poverty. A delightful and thoughtful novel well worth the small investment of time.
