Review:If you love profuse, overly flowery prose you'll love this book. I found it incredibly tedious and had to scan most of the book to get through it. The story really has no point. Incredibly boring. And a number of mis-translations. The one that amused me most was when she describes a person in the waiting room with "healthy teeth and shining hair and firm perinea". Not sure how she could tell the firm perinea (area in front of the anus). And described the couple "had festered on the tiles, hard e... Read more
Review:Nectar in a Sieve, written in 1954, is surprisingly not the least bit dated. There are a number of core themes. Its primary resonance for me lay in the bond between this husband and wife, which ultimately left me feeling that despite their extraordinary trials, these people were at least as lucky as they were not. It is historically and more fundamentally a story set in a time when life in India was rapidly changing, modernizing. This couple's difficulties largely resulted from the introduction ... Read more

Review:Cute little story set in an English village between the World Wars. Miss Buncle writes a novel under a pseudonym about the lives and foibles of her neighbors. Some are outrages when they recognize themselves when reading. Others use it to change their lives. More than a couple of chuckles in this. Read more
Review:I'm reading this for a college assignment. Hate it. Hate it. I don't see why anyone likes it. I'm not Italian or Middle English. Give me a modern translation. If they can translate the Bible into readable English, surely they can translate this. Read more
Review:although the illustrations were powerful and well done, I would have preferred old illustrations by the likes of Arthur Rackham, which resonate with my childhood memory of the tales. Wonderful to have, even with the American spelling. Read more
Review:The story had just enough twist to keep me reading for more, only to be disappointed however at how potentially juicy situations were grazed over. This book was not an easy read for me, the writing did not flow easily from scene to scene. The choppy writing almost came across as "this and that happened and then...". Plenty of the scenes could have been developed further to allow a more exciting book. Read more

Review:The characters were well developed and believable. As the story moved back and forth in time each character's actions, thoughts and feelings became clearer and the story took shape. The fact that Alice was given a voice helped to clarify the relationships among the characters building up to the unexpected ending. Read more
Review:The Adventurers Quartet is a complete series of stand alone romance. I'm sure Stephanie Laurens has the final book well in hand to keep readers thrilled. As for me, um, I can hardly wait. This one made my day. Read more
