Baking
Review:I needed this book a few years ago while living at 7000+ altitude and loved it. Recently a friend moved to a similar location and was having problems baking...I had to send him this book and he said he is so glad I did. Read more
Review:This book makes me laugh at places because it was humorously-written.
BUT!
Under the Equipment section, there's a mention of the digital kitchen scale.
That got me excited because I use the metric system and always find
measuring flour/sugar/cocoa powder/etc by weight far more accurate than by cups.
Unfortunately, all the dry ingredients in the recipes are measured in volume.
It would be great to have both types of weighing methods listed. Read more
Review:Excellent cook book and my wife loves it. There are bake recipes that avoid bad ingredients and suggests use of alternative household ingredients. The book arrived in good condition. I recommend this book to anyone interested in baking at home. Read more
Review:This little book is wonderful. How I wish I would have paid better attention when Grandma was making her wonderful home-made pies. As a small girl spending the night at the farm with grandma and grandpa, you automatically knew that come morning, you would have fresh pie. What a great day to start your day! The Lost Art of Pie Making brings it all back. One of the best investments pie makers of any age will make. Read more

Review:The photography is about the best part of the book. If you're looking for ultra-fancy recipes with somewhat complicated decoration, then this is the cupcake book for you. I found maybe a handful of recipes I'd like to try. Most of the recipes yield odd quantities. Last I checked, most muffin tins are in multiples of 6. Most of the decorations are WAY too elaborate. The majority of recipes suggest applying the topping immediately before serving, which won't be practical for most people. Re... Read more
Review:This is a beautiful, instructive book filled with complex and delicious recipes. Intimidating on first glance Four and Twenty Black Birds attempts to break everything down in a very visual manner so that you can disgard their instructions later and go by feeling (I am referring mostly with pie crust and temperature timing aspects.) The flavor profiles are out of this world and very doable. I have eaten at their home bakery in Brooklyn often and the recipes are of equal quality. I made the Junipe... Read more
Review:This book is beautiful to look at and the content is amazing. It's one of those books without a dust jacket (the beautiful images are printed directly onto the cover, back and front), and it is gorgeous and high-quality. I gave it to a good friend for Xmas and bought a copy for myself as well, and I am so happy I did. The history is very interesting, and there are plenty of recipes -- many of which I have never encountered before.
I haven't baked any of the cakes from it yet (it's not eve... Read more
Review:Incredible book. Wonderful and unique recipes are supported by insight into the creation of the dessert. Great photos give a sense of life in the kitchen in addition to the appearance of the finished product. Read more
Review:Overall, a very good selection of recipes. Instructions are specific and easy enough to follow to yield great results. My only quibble is that there seems to be quite a bit of specialized equipment/ingredients with the recipes written for their specific use. Takes a bit of effort to adapt to whatever you have in the house, but not too bad. Read more
