Review:JUST LIKE SOMEONE WITHOUT MENTAL ILLNESS ONLY MORE SO is Mark Vonnegut's follow-up to The Eden Express, his 1975 memoir of a series of psychotic breakdowns in his early 20s.
This is memoir also, of perseverance, told through a collection of thoughts, vignettes, and longer pieces. Vonnegut writes about attending Harvard Medical School (of twenty programs he applied to, his only acceptance); a passage descr... Read more
Review:This book is the perfect resource for the newly diagnosed or family member of someone with Bipolar disorder. It answers all of your questions and offers insight into disease course, medication and outlook. It has been an indispensable resource for me as I face a diagnosis of Bipolar type 2 at almost 50 years old. Read more
Review:Maybe this book is good for people who are actually planning on entering a 12-step program, but as someone who read it just out of general interest, I found it to be incredibly repetitive, and felt the entire book could have been shrunk down to a 25 page booklet, including all the checklists and tables. There was very little actual material in the book, and it seemed every other chapter was a direct repeat of the previous chapter.
It wasn't so bad as to not want to finish it (it took me a... Read more
Review:This book is a refreshing challenge to the mind, body, spirit, and self that inspires liberation. A liberation from the old version of who you think you are, a liberation from hating anything you put in your mouth, and a liberation to be a whole and healthy person. Take the time to read, and truly digest what she is saying. Hate it, love it, accept it, thrive with it. Read more
Review:Excellent framework for therapy and for interacting with others. A good companion to Games People Play. Important to use these ideas without too much overuse of the terminology, though, as I think people find it off-putting. Read more
Review:I have read some reviews regarding the book not being the original work of the Dalai Lama himself. Yes it is true, it is written by Howard C. Cutler solely (not even partly, but completely). However one has to pay attention that Cutler will not be able to complete his work without the innumerate visits to the Lama, and the wisdom gotten from the Lama himself.
The book is very helpful if you have a "western" mentality. It doesn't mean that you have to be from the West though. I myself ... Read more
Review:Like Trixie's other books, it mixes good humor, a great canine perspective, and some real dog wisdom. Nothing earth-shattering - just good fun. And well worth the investment - nicely illustrated as well. Read more
Review:Truly an eye opening book themed with telling it like it is. This book dispels possible myths of chasing an elusive mystery - Happiness. Is it what we really think? A recommended read full of discovery and concepts that promises to open the mind to new views and alternate pathways to explore. Read more
Review:I have had anxiety and panic attacks for 20 years. They have gotten better over the years, with the eception of driving. I am absolutel terrified. I have done acupuncture, which has helped somewhat, but the fear is still there and I always rationalize its ok not to drive. I donated money to DARE and received a copy of Barry's book. Since then I have downloaded everything I can that applies to the book. I also have had two fiends buy it and just bought 2 more for 2 more friends. This is by far the... Read more
Review:First of all, I had a pretty rough childhood which included losing my mother at the age of 8, only 5 months after immigrating to the U.S. from Asia, and not knowing a single word of English. That, combined with a dysfunctional family to start with, left me pretty scarred growing up.
I read a ton of self-help books, and they all helped in some way. Went to a very expensive NLP therapist that charges $200/hour for about 1.5 years, and it helped me release a lot of old wounds.
After 1... Read more
