I'm extremely disappointed with the quality of this book - despite being a picture book, the text is independent of the pictures and the pictures are tiny on an iPad. As far as kids go, it's a sad excuse for a book. Not worth buying and I'm sorely disappointed in the quality of the experience. Save your money.

It gets these stars because my granddaughter is obsessed by it. I have to read it to her (she is two and one-half) every time I see her. But inquiring minds want to know. (1) I can see why the big dog can't sleep in the small bed, but why can't the little dog get comfortable in the big bed? I mean if there's extra room, so what? (2) In the skiing scene there is one dog-skier who has done a face-pant into the snow, and is upside-down with only the skis showing. My granddaughter is both curious and upset. She constantly asks me who is the dog stuck in the snow, and what happened to him. I think it might be a Bambi's mother type of moment for her. She knows something is terribly wrong and doesn't think it's so funny. So help me out here. What did happen to that dog who is stuck in the snow?

This very simple book has intrigued both of my kids. It lasted with my older kid until about age 4. Now it's working it's magic on kid number 2.

The story is very simple. Fred is tall. Ted is short. They are best friends but they do the opposite of each other all the time.

For a slightly older child I like how this sets the groundwork that people (or dogs) can get a long and be friends despite being very different from each other. I also like how the language is simple enough that it's a good book for a kid to try and read, even if they cant' do it perfectly.

For a smaller kid, I like how it uses simple language and simple coloring to make a book that's engaging during story time and can make a toddler smile.

All in all it's a good book to have on any kid's bookshelf.

This is the book from which my daughter, now aged 47, learned to read! I read it to her seemingly every day when she was young, as she loved it, and at one point I realized that she was reading, not reciting, the words herself! From that point on, she would sit and read it on her own, and she quickly branched out to reading other books. it's a wonderful book, for all the reasons earlier reviewers have pointed out, and I am about to give it to a young child. I am so glad it's not out of print!

This book is a great way to introduce children to the subject of opposites. Fred and Ted like to play different musical instruments. They like different foods. They drive different colored cars. They are even different sizes.

The problem ensues when, after a day of skiing, Fred and Ted rent rooms at a hotel and discover that their beds are unsuitable. Fred and Ted meet to discuss a solution to their situation. After they fail to arrive at reasonable solution, a wily bird resolves their problem. Fred and Ted go back to the hotel to enjoy a peaceful sleep.

I like the simplicity of the story. As a fun alternative, you might consider asking your child to try to find a solution to Fred and Ted's problem before reading the ending.

Big dog... little dog was a favorite story for my children. I purchased a second copy for my grandchildren as the original copy was worn foe heavy use. It teaches children opposites - big, little;short,tall;fast, slow;

The Bright and early book series are very good for 10 month - 2 year old range because they are small, easy to hold, and easier to understand. However there are more interesting books out there. This one is about two dogs named Ted and Fred who go skiing, stay at a hotel, can't sleep (not a good message for babies!) and then switch beds and sleep all day. Instead, I would recommend checking out Go Dogs Go, The Eye Book, Old Hat New Hat, Mr. Brown Can Moo, Elmo Says, and Hand Hand Fingers Thumb.

Okay... not that simple. But simple enough for any kid with the bare basic proficiency :)

Or, you could read it aloud to a younger child, that works too.

My nieces (5 and 2.5) request this book often enough. I'm not sure what grabs them - the opposites, Fred's plain bad luck, the silly problem and solution at the end - but they do like it a lot.

Such a wonderful story with great rhythm, appealing pictures, characters, and story line, and a very memorable cast and ending. All the elements. One of my son's absolute favorites. The board book version is small and handy for diaper bag yet eliminates very little from the original. An excellent book.

This is an easy book that helped reinforce the second grade concept of antonyms with humor and simplicity.

It's very easy to read and still makes kids laugh, young and old using simple humor and artwork. This is a great starter that's also a classic.

My 19-month old daughter is starting to understand the difference between big/little so this book helps her see the pics with big/little and opposites....She definately learns more from reading this book over and over......

Big Dog ... Little Dog was probably the first book I read on my own. 20 years ago my uncle read all of P D Eastman's stories to me and now I get to read these same stories to his children. The illustrations are beautiful and the stories just as wonderful. No child should grow up without hearing these stories just once.

The only problem is that the stories can be so funny they don't really work as bed time stories, I mean, the dogs do some of the silliest things that will keep your kids laughing for hours after.

This well illustrated book absolutely robbed my sons' hearts! They both love dogs, and this book has dogs on every page! It teaches opposites as well as problem solving. You and your little ones will love it!

I bought this book for my wife who remembered having it read to her by her parents when she was a child. The book was exactly like she remembered, except for the fact that now it is in a hard back edition. We even bought an extra copy to give to her parents. They couldn't believe that we found it! Thanks the store.com for helping my wife revisit some great childhood memories. Great children's book! Great illustrations! Worth every penny!

My son received this book on his third birthday - in 1977. My three year old grandson recently discovered the tattered and torn copy that I had saved. He immediately fell in love with it and proudly annouces that it is "Daddy's favorite book." I'm not sure which "boy" will be more excited when the new copy arrives but in the meantime it has brought back a flood of memories for this Grandma. What a joy!
