I bought this book for my three-year-old who was having some trouble with bullying. This book's message is that if you have unshakable self confidence, you're not going to be able to be conquered by the bullies of the world. It's a little questionable in that respect, but the story and the illustrations are so endearing that I love it anyway. Ideally, I think we all hope that by building our children's confidence, we'll insulate them from at least some of the "slings and arrows" of this world.

one of the few empowering books that consistently reinforce the idea of it being okay to be different. most books i've seen so far just have a page or two at the end about not caring what others think. This whole book is about Molly Lou just being herself and it's great!

Arrived bent and wrinkled. Story is okay, good moral message. Large sticker, 4 inch x 4 inch, on the back, was impossible to remove. Because of sticker I could not give it as a gift as I intended. Very disappointing purchase.

Read it to my child care group in Australia several times now - amended a little for Aussie audiences (eg the football reference). They enjoy it but it is not starting the conversations I thought it might re self acceptance and tolerance. I will persist.

I was very disappointed when I opened my package and realized the book I bought was from the Dolly Parton Imagination Library (which mails books for free to children 5 and under). Very unprofessional and sad that someone would take advantage of a good thing like Imagination Library.

This book teaches kids to be proud of who they are even if others make fun of them. It's got fun pictures with lots of colors. My kids and I love Molly Lou Melon! Check out the other books in this series too. They're all wonderful!

I wish I could have previewed more pages of this book before I purchased it. It tells the story of a little girl with a lot of odd 'quirks' or traits and a bully who picks on her because of them. She continues to be herself and in the end win him over as a friend. But the quirks or traits are not realistic, and even though this is a kids book, I think a book with more realistic examples would have been better.

Based on the reviews, I thought that this book would be a good addition to a child's home library. However, I was disappointed in this story. It wanted to offer a positive message but what I took from it was that you need to do things exceptionally in order to impress others and show up your tormentors. So what's a kid to do if they can't, since that would be the case for most kids. I didn't find this book empowering at all. In fact, if I was a kid looking for inspiration, I would feel pretty poorly after looking for it in this book.

Wow, there are tons of five-star ratings for this book. Yeah, it's cute, though it reminds me of Doctor Suess's characters. Maybe a Who of Whoville?

This little girl has the stack against her. Her grandma gives her good advice. But the next part makes me question everything. Her talents save her from a bully. What about the kids that don't know their own talents? How will they win over the bully?

Maybe I'm just having a bad day in my reviewing? I just didn't enjoy this book, nor could I see my kids, when they were little, liking this book.

I'll go sit in the corner until I feel better, I guess as it seems most everyone else loves this book. Enjoy!

There could be two take-aways from this enchanting book, one warm'n'fuzzy and the other darker. Molly Lou Mellon is Thumbelina-size, with a voice like a frog's, buck-teeth so prominent she could qualify as a beaver, and she's a klutz. What Miss Molly has going for her is a grandma who tells her never-you-mind sayings such as, "Walk as proudly as you can and the world will look up to you," ""Sing out clear and strong and the world will cry tears of joy." When Mollie Lou moves to a new town, the school bully, Ronald Durkin starts out on her by calling her "Shrimpo" in gym class. She puts him in his place by running between his legs with the football and scoring a touch-down. By day five, Mollie Lou is the star of the school in football, cutting out amazing snowflakes, and shouting so loudly Ronald is flattened. "Grandma," she writes, "everything you told me is exactly right."

Reading this as the celebration of a different child or of our differences is sweet, heart-warming, and easy. However, the sub-text is that it sure helps and may be essential if one is this different to be better than everyone else in skills other children value. Mollie Lou's self-assurance may have led to her prowess in football and snowflake cutting, to her daring to do anything, but alone, the Ronald Durkins can prevail.

I love this book and it is a favorite with my next generations, but we read it with awareness that Mollie Lou made herself into an exceptionally talented smaller person. That as well as Grandmother's assurances. can turn the bullies into friends and admirers, even contributing a penny to Mollie Lou's penny-stacking feat on those front-teeth.

My 3 year old granddaughter received this book from the Dolly Parton Imagination Library book. It is absolutely wonderful! Molly Lou Melon is a very tiny little girl with buck teeth and a very odd sounding voice. BUT her grandma tells encouraging things like "walk as proudly as you can and the world will look up to you." or "smile big and the world will smile along with you" she takes to heart all the things her Grandma tells her and believes in herself. BUT when she has to start a new school she still did all the things her Grandma tells her to do, there is a boy that is a bully. But she doesn't let him get her down and just continues to believe in herself and make new friends; he soon learns that being a bully doesn't work and becomes her friend. Love the life lessons this book has for children

As a therapist in private practice I worked with a 4-year-old client who was living in foster care. Each session she would select this book as her read-aloud choice. Week after week after week, we read this book together. She never tired of it, and neither did I. This is Molly Lou Melon. She is a wonderful character with self-confidence, courage and charm to spare. I can think of no higher compliment or greater gift to an author than to realize you have made such an impact on the life of a vulnerable child.

This book is about the smallest girl in first grade, Molly Lou Melon. Her grandma always tells her to, "Stand tall and the world will look up to you." So she did. She had buck teeth and she could stack pennies on her teeth. Then her grandma told her to, "Smile big and the world will smile right along side you." So she did. Molly Lou Melon did not have a good voice-it sounded like a bull frog being squeezed. But she did not mind. Then later that year they moved to a new town. She had to say goodbye to her grandma and friends. Plus, she started a new school! On the first day of school, Ronal Durkin called her "shrimpo" but when they started the football game, she caught the ball and made a goal. Then on the second day of school, Ronald Durkin called her a "bucky-tooth beaver!" Then she took out all her pennies and put them on her teeth. And on the third day of school, the same boy said, "You sound like a duck, Honk! Honk!" On the fourth day of school she made the biggest snowflake ever. And the last but not least Ronald Durkin brought Molly Lou Melon a stocking of pennies and smiled at her.

Physical characteristics can often lead to bullying and kids ,making fun of you. As the Obamas said, "When they aim low you aim high." So be seen and be heard. Exercise your freedom and let your voice be heard. Do all the things your parents have taught you. And be proud for you are special.

A+ Yep, you heard me. This book gets an A+ from the students and me (Elementary school counselor). Molly Lou Melon is a "hot mess." I say that with such love and adoration. There are certain books I depend upon to help me teach the concept of self-esteem. This one is a winner. I see kids being bullied, put-down, and made fun of (I know, sad) at school. Most of them are not "built" to take this kind of cruelty. Are any of us really? We teach kids how to say "NO" to bullying, but are we teaching them how to keep their confidence and self-esteem intact? There is a silent emotional aftermath bullying can cause. Kids can walk away emotionally scarred. My biggest fear is when children start to believe the put-downs being said. Molly Lou Melon teaches kids to not let it bring you down but to "Stand Tall." This is a fabulous read and Molly's letter to grandma on the last page is the perfect ending. If you are looking for a great story to teach self-esteem and confidence, look no further. It is difficult to teach those concepts at an early age - this will surely help you!

Children need positive words and support. This build strong character and confidence that opens the door to loving themselves. Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon has Molly receiving unwavering support from her grandmother that brings out the best in her. I recommend this book since it expresses the importance of Parents and Caregivers as a young person first cheerleaders.
The illustrations are nice. However the problem with a few of them they are small and most of the page is just colored background. I believe it is to compare Molly's height against her surroundings.

Molly Lou Melon is the shortest girl in the first grade, has buck teeth that stick out so far she can stack pennies on them and has a voice like a bull frog squeezed by a boa constrictor. But she also has a very wise Grandma who has always told her to walk proudly, smile big, sing out loud and clear and "Believe in yourself and the world will believe in you too!" Unfortunately, her family moves away from Grandma and now Molly Lou Melon has to go to first grade in a new school. And on her first day she meets Ronald Durkin, class bully. He calls her shrimpo and bucky-tooth-beaver and follows her around calling out honk-honk and making fun of her schoolwork. But Molly Lou remembers everything her Grandma told her and soon Ronald Durkin is put firmly in his place..... Patty Lovell has written an uplifting and engaging picture book with a gentle message that won't be lost on young readers. Her simple, yet powerful text is complemented by David Catrow's bold, bright and joyous artwork and together they've authored a terrific story that's summed up on the book's last page, in Molly Lou's letter to her Grandma..."Everything you told me was exactly right." Perfect for youngsters 4-8, Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon is a treasure you'll want to read and share, told with great insight, wisdom and humor.

My daughter received this book as a gift from the hospital when she was born prematurely. It is about a girl who can't sing and has crooked teeth. However, she learns to accept and embrace what makes her just a little bit different. In the end, even the class bully can't break the spirit of Molly Lou Melon. This is a great book to read children who need to learn how to be confident in themselves. (Works for parents too!) Buy it and read it to anyone who needs to learn the power of being confident in themselves and to not let a bully get them down.

Molly learns moral lessons from her Granma that help her adjust to a new school with an awesome bully. But the bully is not so dreadful that he can't be brought around by standing tall.
The delightful story makes the book my granddaughter's 'favorite'. The art work is equally delightful at a glance. But with more than a glance a reader can entrance the readee with attention to detail that will long be remembered.
A prize winner for both grandparent and grandchild as well as illuistrator and author.

This is one of the most amazing little children's books I have ever come across! Molly Lou Melon is an individual, and she OWNS her individuality! When she moves to a new place, there is a big bad bully who constantly tries to make Molly Lou feel bad about her characteristics and physical traits. However, much to his chagrin, every single thing he wants to pick on Molly Lou about turns out to be something *fantastic* about her! I especially love the ending, as it reminds us all about the very people in our own lives who constantly encouraged us and helped us accept and love who we are so that we can also accept and love others. We don't own this book, but my daughters have been sure to check it out from the library a time or two! :)

I absolutely adore this book. My three year old son loves it! I wasn't sure if he would relate seeing as how the main character is a girl but he loves it. It's a great story for both boys and girls, and the message to stand proud is great.
The illustrations are great, and I enjoy reading it to my kiddo as much as he enjoys hearing it, which is rare in children's books. Not to mention, it's just really fun to say 'Molly Lou Melon'.

I have to say I favor a book for its illustrations over its story, as long as the story is still good! I was so impressed with David Catrow's gorgeous illustrations that I searched through all of the books he illustrated intent on buying more. "King Bidgood..." is an example of my taste if that helps.

The story is upbeat with a clear message about a small girl who has obstacles, that in her own way, she learns to overcome thanks to the advice of her grandma. I am sorry to have read the negative review stating that Molly Lou Melon is a magical pixie. With all due respect, her size is exaggerated because that is what children love. Yes, she does fun things, but children get the "moral of the story" which underlies the exaggerations. I think it is the parent's issue if one expects pure "realism" in a children's book. Afterall, that is what encyclopedias are for.

We have enjoyed this book for 4 years with our 5 and 7 seven year old daughters. It hasn't gotten old. My 18 month old son equally enjoys the story, even if the message goes right over his head! His age and interest in this book is directly related to the wonderful illustrations! Kids love it! I love it too! Enjoy!

Our class read the story Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon by Patty Lovell. We liked when Moly's grandma gave her compliments. We did not like when Ronald Durkin was bullying Molly. We learned the lesson to stand up for ourselves when we get bullied. I will always remember that kind from grandma words go farther than mean words from bullies. Most of our class recommends to read this book because it can give you good advice about standing up for yourself.

This is the cutest book, definitely in my toddler's top five favourites and that's saying something for a book that doesn't have any trains in it! We actually had to buy a second copy because the first one was so well loved the pages came apart. There aren't many books you can't live without but this is one in our house. Molly Lou Melon is pretty oblivious to the world around her and its judgments. She just delights in herself and follows her grandma's advice to stand tall, etc. and the world will follow. It just reads really well and the names are so cute, Molly Lou Melon and Ronald Durkin just couldn't be named anything else. I would not want to live with this dish-breaking, croaking little kid but I love her in the pages of a book as a role model for all.

This is one of the best children's books I've ever read, and the illustrations are fantastic - lively and full of color and emotion. Being rather small of stature myself, I was fortunate enough never to have been bullied because of it, but that may be because I shared Molly Lou Melon's life philosophy that using your brain to outwit the bully, being an interesting person, and simply being fair are excellent tools to help you get through life. Molly LOVES life for all it has to offer, and that is an excellent message to send to children everywhere. Since finding this book, I give it as a gift to all my friends and families with children so that their child knows that being an individual is a wonderful thing to be. My son just loves Molly too! I can't recommend this book highly enough. Pick it up NOW!

Molly Lou Melon is a tiny little first grader. In fact, she is the shortest in her class and is barely taller than her pet doggie. Luckily, Molly Lou has a supportive, sage and inspirational grandmother. Grandma tells her, "walk as proudly as you can and the world will look up to you". Her grandma also tells her, "smile big and the world will smile right alongside you".

One day, Molly Lou's family has to move. Molly is in a new school with new children. There is a bully at school that starts to pick on her. Fortunately for her, she has taken all her grandmother's words to heart.

Lovell and Catrow have teamed together to bring 4- 6 year olds a character to really cheer and root on. Molly Lou is spunky and charismatic. Catrow's choice of vivid and bright water colors is a perfect compliment to her vivacious personality. At times the images have a distorted and surrealistic quality. This lends the book to some good laughs. The audience will be happy for Molly Lou when the problems with the bully come to an end. This book is an asset to any collection. It's great for children who are dealing with a move to a new city. It's also appropriate for kids dealing with self esteem issues.

I bought this book years ago for my now 18 year old daughter. She loved it and we read it over and over. She still talks fondly about it and I must admit to ordering a copy for my grandson/her nephew, who is 4 years old. I even took it to college as an adult learner when we had to present something that meant something special to us. I read it to the class in exactly the same way I did to my daughter. It was very special. I highly recommend the story, the drawings, and the time spent laying in bed and enjoying a fun story of confidence and embracing your individuality.

This book is great for children of all ages and, Molly Lou Melon teaches children not to pick on others no matter how they look or act. I bought this book several years ago and have read it to all of my children. Last year we moved and the book was packed up and left in a box. Today I inadvertenly found the book and was SO excited. I immediately pulled my two youngest children close for a story telling. When I was done reading the only way I felt I could really express my pure appreciation for this book was to get online and tell others how great it truly is.

This is the best book I have ever purchased for my children! The first time I cried with a sense of pride for Molly Lou Melon. There are so many principles of self worth taught in this book with fun colorful animation and absolutely loveable characters. I will treasure this book FOREVER. I'm so incredibly grateful for the lessons my children get to learn from Molly Lou Melon. It beats every Cadelcott on the market.

With love and gratitude to author, Patty Lovell, and illustrator, David Catrow. Thank you for your contributions to literature. You've truly made the world a better place by sharing your talents.

If I could give this book more than five stars, I would.

We received this book as a gift, and I wasn't too sure about it because the illustrations are not my style. But I was hooked by the first couple of pages. Molly Lou Melon, a short, bullfrog-voiced, buck-toothed dynamo shows kids how to stand up for themselves and love their individuality with humor and grace.

The illustrations are full of hidden gems, the story is short and full of meaning, and kids of all ages will get a kick out of Molly Lou's antics. A must-read!

I like this one. It is just enough over the edge, illustration wise, to make it quite interesting. More importantly than my likeing it, is that all the kids seem to love this one. For some reason it appeals to them. The story is certainly good and teaches a wonderful lesson on a subject that bothers most kids, self-image. The author has hit this subject head on and has done a very good job of it in quite understandable style. I like the art work in this one, and feels it makes the point of the story stick. Recommend this one highly.

Molly Lou Melon lives with her parents in a big house. But then
she moves. At first she was sad to move but soon Molly Lou Melon
makes a new friend in her new town. They make amazing things to
play with. When Molly Lou Melon goes to school, problems happen.
What happens? Does it become good or bad? Read this book and
follow Molly Lou Melon to the different places she goes. This book
is fantastic and extraordinary. It was both suprising and unusual and
you can’t stop reading it. I think this is a 5 star book!!!

This is by far one of my favorite books of all time! Molly Lou is a sweet girl who, although she is a little different from the other kid her age, uses her talents to the best of her ability. The author uses Molly Lou to teach kids to be themselves no matter who is around or what they say about you. I think that one of the most important things that kids should know now-a-days is that they WILL be criticized. But also, that you can take something out of that criticism and move on from it. Molly gets made fun of relentlessly, yet she doesn't change for anyone because she is proud of who she is. A definite must read!

I am always on the lookout for books that have a story that captivates me but is still simple enough for my two year old daughter to follow. This book fits the bill nicely. My daughter will sit still through a reading and you cannot help but embrace the message within this book that we are all special. This is the first book I have found that deals with the issue of self esteem. I think it will be invaluable to my daughter when she starts school.

I found this book as part of an assignment in my literacy eduction class at NYU. We have been looking at many children's books to familiarize ourselves with the plethora of messages/lessons/stories presented in them. After looking at many books, I found that Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon is a wonderful book for young readers. It is about a little girl who is different from the others in her class. She is the shortest girl, has buck teeth, and a squeaky voice. Her wise grandmother tells her to not care and be herself and that is exactly what she does. When she has to move to a new school, she does what her grandma tells her and every one loves her. Even the little boy who makes fun of her, apologizes and becomes friends with her. I really like this book because it does not have an intricate plot nor does it have many characters. There is a simple nature to the book which adds to its uniqueness. Also, there is not this cliched classroom scene, but rather a colorful depiction which adds excitement to the read. The colorful illustrations compliment the writing and make the story more engaging and fun. I would reccomend this book to any teacher and parent.

Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon es a story about a girl named Molly, who is extremly short. Her grandma is encouraging and never gives up on Molly. One day, Molly has to go to a different school and meets a bully. She oddly changes him from a cold-hearted bully to a warm-hearted friend. This book has gorgeous, colorful pictures that go along perfectly with the writing. I recommend this great, well-written book for all ages.

This is a cute, short story about a little girl who is trying to 'get things right.' It is for any child, and especially the many children who may not be perfect, (and who is!?) and who may be still a work in progress. Each page has a lesson, such as, Molly is fumble fingered, but her grama told her to practice and practice...and it shows Molly going from dropping all the dishes to walking on a tight rope holding the dishes! Each page is magnificently illustrated with so much detail. My little girl is 3 years old, and it is her favorite book. And one of mine also! It's a keeper!!

My husband and I are both educators and we own an insane number of children's books. This book is one of our stand-out favorites. The illustrations are quirky and fun. The story is charming, and the message is subtle and sweet. The main character is a little girl, but both of our boys (3 and 5) love the story and we visit it again and again. It's a fantastic read and a life lesson book that doesn't slap you across the face with the message, just charms you into feeling really good.

I began to read this book to my daughter when she was two and she loves it! The book is great because it has so many things to look at; there are great illustrations of animals, vehicles, kids, etc.

I also love that Molly Lou Melon has such great self esteem and doesn't resort to pouting or bullying when other kids are mean to her. She just keeps on doin' her own thing and in the end wins over the school bully. This book is now on my list of books to give as gifts to other children!

This book is great! It is definitely one I will be reading to my children. It is a great book to read to children if you want them to know that they are special the way they are and that they shouldn't let anyone stand in their way of reaching their full potential. Molly Lou Melon also faces her problems with courage and deals with bullying in a good way. She is able to take what everyone else sees as flaws and turn them into talents.

But when it comes to this book, you should I LOVE IT!!!

The story is about a girl who, despite some of her "short comings", wins over even the toughest boy in her new school by just having a good attitude and loving herself for who she is. It's a great moral lesson. The illustrations are wonderful too.

I would also recommend "I Like Myself" by Karen Beaumont and illustrated by David Catrow. Another book with a very positive message for young girls.

At first I wasn't too keen are reading this book, but I ended up loving it! Each of us go through times of being criticized, but I think this just gives us a reminding to stand tall and love who you are! The illustrations are brilliantly done as well!

Short or tall we all have our talents. The main character of Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon is a young girl who is very short and has buck teeth. She gets made fun of by some kids at her school. She tells her grandmother about these kids. Her grandmother tells her to stand proud and show them what you can do. I really liked this book because it lets you know that even though you're not perfect you still have many talents. Even though it's a children's book I think anyone could read this book and learn something from it.

I think this book is really cute, it shows the importance of holding your head up high and knowing that you are special, as well as the importance of Grandmas. I'm giving this to my grandaughter just as soon as she's old enough as I think it's just perfect, the pictures are so funny, the story is just the right length as well as a having a great message. I think any kid would like this book but little girls would like it best.

I purchased this book from my daughter's book fair at her elementary school. I intended for it to be read and enjoyed by my 8 year old, however my 3 year old has taken over this book. It has to be read every night before bed. My husband and I never get tired of reading it because of the lovable character and the "be proud of who you are" lesson. The illustrations are the best and add alot to the story. I cannot wait to purchase another "Molly Lou Melon" book.

The theme of always being yourself is prevelant and I think that is very important for young readers. The pictures throughout the story really draw the reader into Molly Lou Melon. I think Molly Lou Melon is a great story and should be read by all!!

This book was super...my daughter loved the way that at the end Molly befriends the boy who had previously been so mean to her. Molly shined through out the book overcoming every possible put down, and was able to do so without getting upset. What wonderful self-esteem!

Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon is an outstanding book. I fell in love with Molly and truly enjoy it each time I read it. I read it to my three year old and seven year old sons. They love it and think it's a very funny book. My three year old wants it read again and again. I've not yet read it to my first graders, but I am sure it will be a hit with them as well.

Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon teaches kids no matter what people say or how people treat you you should always believe in yourself. Molly Lou Melon faces many fears that everyday children must face and she conquers them which helps kids have faith and confidence that everything in there life will work out even if they are going through a hard time.

This is a wonderful book for children. The illustrations are whimsical and keeps their attention. It teaches children that being different can be wonderful when you feel good about yourself. My daughter is 3 and we read this book about 3 times a week.

The book's main subject is bullying. The author's main point is that you should be yourself. One of the most interesting things in this book is how Molly Lou ran through the bully's legs and scored a touchdown. In my opinion, this book is funny. I say this because it is silly. I had used this book in the past and loved it for the lesson on bullying that I feel makes the children really think about it and enjoy it at the same time. I even used it with my Sunday School Class.

Molly is an example for all. She listens to one who is wise. She applies truth told to her. And she has the courage to be the person she was meant to be. She lets no problem, no fear, or no one dissuade her from revealing her worth and abilities. Molly is a hero for all.

I found this book several years ago through Scholastic and my 2 daughters love it. It is a great story about how Molly Lou Melon is different than other kids and for her to be proud of herself. It teaches them that it is okay to be different. The pictures in the book are incredible.

This story is about a girl named Molly. She moved to a new town and started a new school. And a boy picked on her but soon nobody picked on her because she had talent.
The author's message is accepting other differences because accepted how she was better then them.
This book is similar to tacky the penguin because the authors messages is the same in tacky the penguin you can learn accepting other differences.
Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon was okay but if you are that kind of people that like weird stories about weird people then I would recommend this story to you. I live in Killingly, CT, USA. I am 8 years old.
