Introducing teens to a dystopian, futuristic New York City ( Manhattan City) and the surrounding "cities" (ex. Bronx City) is quickly accomplished with this well imagined novel. The main character is a determined young woman whose fate was cast by the prenatal "adjustments " chosen [or forced upon?] by her mother. Readers will identify with the unfairness, the frustrations, and the all too real life-situations. Choices abound and not all of them are good. The powerful have too much of everything and the helpless have too little of everything, including hope. Language is appropriate for situations (maybe too colorful for some) and the diversity of teens and adults reflects the city's population in reality. I am interested in reading the next book to see if some characters get more depth, how the plot develops, and just what is the future for those suffering from "The Waste."

This novel posits the extreme, if logical, conclusion of the political and social consequences of everyone living in their own information bubble. When only few entities control all the information the rise of Oligarchy like the Orderists is entirely too plausible--and lends a Casandra-esque prophetic moral to this tale.
If you're a fan of Political/Corporate Espionage stories you'll love this novel.

This is a sensational book for anyone interested in dystopia, sci-fi, inequality, or just great stories. The author’s imagination is amazing—the book draws you in, you live the characters, the world is fascinating. You won’t be able to put this book down once you get into it.
AOE is set in what’s left of a gritty New York City, after it has been split into a gleaming elite center (Manhattan) and four tributary cities, including Bronx City, where we meet Daniela Machado. She’s a high school track star with a tough life and an ailing brother, but she’s still got it better than most. A member of the genetically elite "highborn" shows up dangling the prize of a spot at the Tuck School—an elite prep school in Manhattan (it may be based on the real life Dalton, I think). Friendships, rivalries and intrigue follow. The author does an absolutely amazing job setting up mysteries then peeling them back as the book unfolds. The machinations are way better than Red Queen—maybe Game of Thrones worthy devious. The world is incredibly real and detailed, mostly owing to the wonderful cast of characters, who range from Peeta-level loyal to Voldemort-level evil, but the author does a great job letting us get to know the “why” of each. These are all people we might know. I really enjoyed how the author dealt with the bonds of friendship between the characters. Teens will enjoy this, but there are also deeper themes. If you enjoy Margaret Atwood, you will like this book, as would fans of Pierce Brown.
The back matter says that the author is new. I hope this book gets the recognition it deserves. Definitely grab a copy now. (Disclosure: I received an ARC from the author).

I really enjoy sci-fi looking into the future and how we may look and interact. This book covered all of it, and it wasn't too over the top fiction. I can actually see things like this happening in the future. Can't wait to read the next in the series.

I really enjoyed this book. The plot and characters really kept me interested. The writing was done well with the occasional typo. Things got a little crazy at the end but I went along for the ride and enjoyed it.

The book almost lost me on the first couple pages, but after that, it really starts to feel you in. There are a few metaphors the author relies on a bit too heavily, but for a first book, and the price, this is one of the best sci-fi reads on Kindle Unlimited I've read to date.

Well written, excellent character development, plot can be compared to the Hunger Games. But, this novel can hold its own when compared to the Hunger Games Trilogy. The protagonist is smart and the turns and twists in this saga are sharp. Worth the read.

This is a great series if you like distopian series like The Hunger Games or Divergent. I really enjoyed all three books thanks to my kindle unlimited subscription :) A gusty heroine with the odds stacked against her, great companions, lots of twists and turns. I highly recommend it!

I am impressed with his first novel and have already ordered the second book. I think he did a great job creating a dystopian world. I became more and more engaged with the characters throughout. Nice work Julian!

Great read with strong female lead. Characters diverse and complex. Daniella is chosen to enter into a life of priviledge unknown from her own crumbling downtrodden world —and she'll risk everything to save her family and friends.

Great book with great, well defined characters. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's a YA book, but I love to read them. I don't even like to distinguish between YA and adult stories...a good story is a good story and this one is super! Definitely recommend it. Lots of fun to read!

YA dystopian novels have been hit or miss but this is one of the good ones! Great read and for a first time author she hit it out of the park. I'm hoping for a little more character development in the next ones but great first book.

Really well done! I loved it. You will too. Full of twists and as surprises. I was thinking the ending was not finished, but turns out there are two more books!

These books , all of them , are an original take on dystopian future and the characters grow up quickly book to book. A world worth getting lost in and a story you’ll want to read to the last book, the bitter end.

Wow, I really enjoyed this book. Action, characters, mystery, meaning. While ripping through this in one day/night I thought about Hunger Games (characters), Red Queen (intrigue, relationships), 1984 (sinister societal undertones), Batman (Gotham city), Gattica (genetic engineering) and a host of others, all baked together to make one unique dish. I can't believe this is a debut author. He writes like a master. This one is going to be huge once people find it.

What a fantastic story. The character s were well written and fully believable. The distance between societies is actually not so far fetched. This story makes you carefully consider free will and value of all people. It is a great read.

A rare thing, story first, romance is either very secondary or hinted at. A fish out of water combined with a good dystopian/evil empire story touching on real concerns regarding genetic tampering and the goods and evils it could bring humankind. A school story where the involvement of students in larger world issues actually makes sense. I recommend it highly,

This was a wonderful read. It engaged me from start to finish. I very unique group of charachters who were well developed. This is a truly fresh take on the destopyian genre. Most books i read in this category seem too influenced by other people and I commend the author for her story.

For a first time author, this is a remarkably well told story. Yes, there are improbabilities, but it is, after all, sci fi / fantasy! The characters are pretty well developed and the setting is excellent. A thoroughly good read.

I liked the sample (check).
Made sure the series was complete (burned by GG Martin, check).
Read the reviews--whoa. If the 1st was so good that it got 111 five star reviews, why did the 2nd book get only 9 reviews in total & the 3rd only 11 reviews??
Makes me wonder why those readers didn't read the complete series. Fake reviews? I think I'll pass.

It's an interesting premise. The writing is rather juvenile though I must say the character development is surprisingly good. It defies reality that the ex would go along with the half-baked plan but, hey-- I was engaged by the story and would read the next episode.

It was a quick read that was very entertaining and I quite enjoyed the running and action scenes. Apparently there are three books in this series so off to read the other two. A fun read overall; would recommend this book.
