Petey is such a heart touching story. I almost cried, but that's not really the point. Petey is a man who had severe disabilities, and it takes you through his life step by step. Petey meets many friends, most of who eventually leave him. Then he meets Trevor, who turns out to be a lifesaver for Petey. Overall, I highly recommend this book. It is so touching and keeps you turning the pages. I couldn't put this down! It is a fabulous book!

Do you consider the mentally challenged, or handicapped?
In this fictional book, "Petey" by Ben Mikaelsen, you are quickly introduced to limited characters. For example you will meet the family of mice, a juvenile boy named Calvin; he is also in the insane asylum with Petey., and amale worker named Joe. Joe becomes friends with both of the boys, and treats then as if they were his own. Many more charcters will soon come into play. The novel starts out megar, but soon increases the rising action. Petey is an infant that has cerebral palsy, but due to the limited knowledge and technology; he is misdiagnosed as an "idiot" and gets stationed at an insane asylum or Mental insitution. While struggling to figure out why he thinks no one loves him, and trying to see himself from others point of view, he goes into depression, and needs help coming out of the depression stage. He has an on going battle of trying to communicate with the other patients and employees. Hassling to fumble works out Calvin and himself play guessing games until they understand each other. I would suggest this book to an age range of 10 year olds to 13 year olds.

Petey is one of the most touching, saddest story I have ever read. This story is about a man named Petey who is born with a serious disease were he can do nothing, but think and lie in his bed. He makes many friends who learn to communicate and stick up for him until his last seconds in this wonderful world. This book will bring tears and a new respect for people who are different and for your own life.

My daughter, age 11, insisted that I read this book, and when I finished it last night, I hugged her and thanked her. This is a BEAUTIFUL book. It swept both my daughter and me away, and it made me weep with both sadness and joy. This is one of those books you wish would never end, because you want to stay with the characters.
Truly, truly stunning.

This is the most wonderful book.It is very emotionble. There are absolutly no words to discribe this. But i will give it a try... Petey, a child born with cerbral Palsy. Petey is locked away in an asylum from the age of two. this book takes place a few years ago when they didn't understand disablities and such like palsy. Petey was treated practicly un-human from the moment he was locked away. his living conditions were terrible. but when staff were assigned to Petey he touched thier lives. Petey loves all around him, everything he does is for others. His love of life is so splended. Just as petey touch others he will touch you. Petey will change you forever.Petey....

I loved this book. I now have a totally different view of people with disabilities. Petey shows that they can be capable of more than we give them credit. As Petey says, it was "pfer guu"(Pfer guu means "pretty good" for those of you who haven't read it. Petey has cerebral palsy so that's how he talks.) I just love the way that Ben Mikaelson uses what he learned from his experience with nursing home patients. He includes events from his own life as well as Gary Paulsen does in his books. A great book!!!

Because it has not gotten extreme popularity, I think of Petey as a hidden classic. The first time I read Petey I cried, and at right then, it became my all-time favorite book. Since then, I have purchased the book and re-read it. The second time of reading was better than the first because I knew the major events that were going to happen and could concentrate on the smaller details. Because of this, Petey is a great book and should get the publicity that it deserves!

Petey is a guy that has cerebral palsy. His parents sold everything they had to pay for the hospital bills. People thought that he was retarded so they sent him to Warm Springs Insane Asylum. His best friend Calvin, Owen, Cassie, Joe, and Trevor were the only ones who really understood him. I thought this was an awesome book to read and I recommend it to anyone because people need to not judge a book by its cover and learn from it, like what happened to Petey.

My reading ASU instructor read this book to us. The book is long, could be condensed and still be great. The concept of this book is amazing and is well written. I have a problem with how much of a focus they put on how Petey is lonely and makes the reader feel sorry for him through the whole story...it is a bit much.

My son 13, loved this book...he actually brought it home from school for me to read because he was so taken with this novel. The book is about Petey-his life living differently from the majority of society. Petey might look different, he might talk different but his heart and mind is bigger than most of us! Petey is a person we should all strive to mimic, a person who gives so much more than most of us. This book can't help but be a guide to many middle school children-and to be honest, many adults. A must read for people of all ages!
