Laurann Dohner has quickly become one of my favorite authors. This book was great, a very original story. I became addicted to the series and have read most of them at this point. The books can be read alone but are best if read in order as some of the stories are told from the perspective of another in a later book. Definitely would recommend this book.

This book was a disappointment. I was hoping for something more along the lines of the Black Dagger Brotherhood but this falls short. There is no chemistry between the main characters and none of the characters were fully developed. I have read other books that explore this same sort of thing and do it better.
Taunting Krell (Cyborg Seduction) (Volume 7) :: Kraven (VLG Series Book 2) :: Smiley (New Species Book 13) :: Seducing Stag (Cyborg Seduction) (Volume 10) :: Darkness (New Species Book 12)

From the moment I picked this book up I absolutely COULD NOT put it down! From the cover down to the writing, it was an amazing book! I don't do spoilers but I will say that this book is worth all the attention I gave it. (which was a small amount because I couldn't put it down). Laurann is an amazing writer and I can't wait to start the second book. Love you, Laurann! :)

Loved this bittersweet story. The New Species did not volunteer or asked to be created. The torture they suffered is unbelievable. Through it all they are trying to carve out peace and happiness. Kellie is compassionate and fiercely protective of Fury. I loved this book.

I was so skeptical about this series when I heard it's plot. But I had a friend who raved about it so I humored her. Well to my surprise I was instantly hooked! The storyline is fascinating and you can't help but love the characters strength and desires. You will be rooting for the "new species" by the end of the first chapter!!

FURY by Laurann Dohner.
STORY BRIEF:
Mercile Industries kidnaps children and modifies their DNA with animal characteristics. The victims are kept in cells for years. They are tortured, raped, and experimented upon. Ellie works for Mercile. She obtained evidence which she plans to give to the authorities. She hopes to free the prisoners. One of the prisoners is Fury who was given canine DNA. He and Ellie are attracted to each other.
REVIEWER'S OPINION:
The events and action reminded me of TV shows - superficial and everything's been done before. It needed more interesting personalities, more interesting dialogue. I had enough curiosity to stay with it to the end, but that's the best I can say.
OTHER BOOKS:
I prefer the author's Cyborg Seduction series. I gave 4 stars to Touching Ice (#4) and Stealing Coal (#5).
DATA:
Narrative mode: third-person. Kindle count story length: 6,488 (531 KB). Swearing language: strong. Sexual language: strong. Number of sex scenes: 6. Setting: current day southern California. Copyright: 2011. Genre: paranormal romance.

What a spectacular debut for Dohner’s New Species series! I was captivated from page one. Readers will fall in love with Fury and Ellie. Be warned, their love story is wrought with an obscene amount of trials and tribulations. Although some obstacles may seem simply impossible for them to overcome, in the end, each of their struggles combined birth a gripping, gut-wrenching, ride for the reader.
The story begins with Ellie, a worker for Mercile Industries, who helps smuggle needed information to an outside source in the hopes of bringing her employer down for all their horrendous crimes.
Mercile industries is a pharmaceutical company that has done unthinkable tests on human-like subjects for profitable gain. Their actions have harvested a new bread of beings that are closely related to animals with stronger senses, and better capabilities. They are human, but with an animal side. One test subject in particular is Fury, who is part canine. Ellie is taken with him from the start. She has always watched him, hoping to free him. Their first interaction isn’t what many would hope, and things ultimately take a horrible twist when Ellie must betray Fury to save him later.
Time passes after their first encounter, and the reader is introduced to Homeland, a sanctuary for recently freed species. Fury is no longer a captive, but his own person. It is at Homeland that Ellie and Fury cross paths again. All hope seems lost at their reunion, but Fury soon finds that he is consumed with Ellie, and doesn’t know how to handle the intense feelings he has for the one person that betrayed him. Ellie has never forgotten him either, and wants to make things right between them.
Throughout the entire story, Dohner introduces more and more details about life for species after freedom. What is most fascinating is their concept of a mate. Because species are not all human, their concept of love is unbreakable; they mate for life, and don’t believe in divorce, or sharing. Species were created in labs and were never given possessions, so being able to own and cherish something forever is all consuming for them.
The concept of this series is new and utterly refreshing. The world in which Dohner crafts is detailed and riveting. The creation of Homeland was brilliant. Uneducated, and unsure, new species prevail to create a society where they will not be judge, or used for profit. They go so far as to appoint a fellow species member as a spokesmen for them (Justice North). They also craft the NSO, the new species officers, which act as their own task force to help protect themselves from the extremist groups that seek to rid the earth of them.
Being that this is the first book in the series, Dohner introduces an immense amount of detail for her readers to absorb, and many species members are introduced that will have their own stories later. It is important to know that this book can be read alone, or in order with the rest. Dohner is really good about separating everything, so you can read things out of order.
I am so thrilled I discovered Laurann Dohner. Her books are entertaining, and thrilling. The connection between her characters is believable. This is my second read through for her new species series, and I find that I simply can’t get enough. I look forward to what she will put out next.

I am totally cheating in writing this review. I got this book as a free download here on the store and, though it looked intriguing, it sat for a while since I always have a huge list of books to read. I'm not sure what made me read it... I think I saw a raving review from one of my friends on Goodreads but I'm not positive. Anyway, I started it, and I could not put it down. I found myself reading it everywhere... even in the bathroom! (I know... TMI...) Luckily, I have the Kindle app for my iPhone... Hee hee!
I admit, I was a little daunted at first. I mean, falling in love with a guy mixed with dog DNA? I don't care how hot the guy is, that is just... Ewwwwww!!! But the story is just so damn original and good, that it drew me right in. In my mind, I replaced 'dog' with 'wolf' and suddenly, 'canine DNA' didn't seem so gross. LOL!! Why is that?
To prove how awesome this series is, I come to the cheating part... I'm writing this review AFTER I've finished all 8 available books in the series. I was fortunate enough to get a very generous the store gift card from my hubby for my birthday in September. Good thing, cuz I spent it on the 'New Species' books. One right after the other... just... bang! bang! bang! The 9th one comes out on October 30th. Good thing the hubby gave me another gift card for Sweetest Day. Hee hee!! Does he love me, or what?
I love this series so much, I've even joined the Laurann Dohner group on Goodreads and am contemplating emailing her with some idea I have for future books. (I hope she doesn't mind.) :o)
The premise of the series, is that a major medical group, Mercile, was experimenting on human babies by injecting them with animal DNA. Their purpose was to develop drugs that would make humans stronger and heal faster. Of course, greed got in the way, and they started to experiment with the 'subjects' for military purposes and other money-making reasons. After all the torture these poor people suffered, proof of these experiments was finally smuggled out and exposed to the public. The public was horrified, especially after finding out that the government had funded a lot of their research, and the facilities were raided, setting the test subjects free. After their release, the government gave them a newly-built military base to live on so they would be sheltered from humans, who they now hate, associating them with pain and captivity.
Calling themselves, New Species, the released victims nominate a leader and began to build lives for themselves. There's a lot of material for story plots; hate groups, prejudice, physical differences, rebellion, betrayal, plus, there is an extensive list of characters, each with their own, unique persona and charm. Some are wilder, as their animal DNA is more prominent, and some are naturally easier-going with more human qualities. The majority are males, but there are a small percentage of females. So far, all of the books center around New Species males pairing with human females, but I'm hopeful for the opposite, as well as a New Species pair. :o)
Obviously, if you've made it this far in my review, you've realized that I whole-heartedly recommend these books. I really don't think you'd be disappointed. They're original and engulfing, and the characters are intriguing and very likable. The best part? The sexy times are bone-meltingly hot... just sayin'.
Best wishes for happy reading!

WOW, This book was recommended to me based on other books I read or purchased and OMG am I glad i took the risk! What an amazing masterpiece Mrs. Dohner has created! When I read reviews from others I had mixed feeling about buying this book? There where so many warning about *traumatizing rape scenes* however I did not think it was traumatizing...yes in the beginning you are hit very hard with graphic details on how these characters are treated but it was a def need to know to understand the gravity of the situations they've been forced to live through their whole life. As I have read each book in this series (as soon as they came out no less!) I don't want to spoil it for anyone. 416 (Fury) is a prisoner, not because he has done anything wrong but just for who and what he is, which is half human and half animal. Forced to live a lonely existence and be tested on by humans for vaccines, war fare and pretty much everything a rat would be used for. Enter Ellie whom he assumes is just another horrible lab person come to torch-er him some more and does something in his mind to make her just like them. And if he ever get put he's going to kill her for being just like those other horrid humans. As soon as Ellie is approached and told that the company she works for is during horrid things well she makes a choice and even with her life on the line she realizes she must save 416 (Fury) and the others that she knows are down there! Putting her life on the line she does whats right..............After all this we are taken into an amazing life on how these now newly freed must learn to do day to day things while dealing with the reality that not all humans are happy to find out they exists. They do this at Homeland, a place the government gives them out of shame from "not knowing" what Mercile was up to. For her help Ellie is asked to come help the newly freed women learn and live in their dorm but when Fury realizes shes their he sooo wants to kill the human who he thinks wronged him. .....*************OK I CANT SAY ANYMORE BUT BEWARE WHEN YOU HAVE A NEW RACE OF SPECIES WHOM ARE ALL SPLICED WITH ANIMALS RANGING FROM DOGS TO TIGERS YOUR GOING TO GET IT ALL ****OF COARSE HOTTT SEX, LOTS ;)! LOVE, HATE, LEARNING, HONESTY AND A WORLD OF NEW THINGS BE READY FOR A HELL OF A GREAT BOOK**********

Love these books, great concept, and will buy any future ones (have already bought the first 7).
Two caveats... The main characters are all VERY similar even when the author SAYS they aren't, they ACT the same and they SPEAK the same -- even if you tell us they are different, when their actions and dialogue are interchangable, they are the same. GOOD and interesting characters, but how about a story about a human male, or a Gift female, or one of the badass New Species females? THAT would be interesting, too. It doesn't always have to be big tough damaged New Species male and small spunky human female.
(And just once, how about a human female who shrugs off the New Species concerns and says, Sure, I can take it, baby.... AGAIN we have to hear how he's so much bigger than human males and she's timid and determined to please him even if it hurts a little...? <G> OK, sure.)
And the dialogue is tedious in many places. Break up giant paragraphs of dialogue, please! No one speaks this way. It is sometimes terribly stilted -- even within the world she's built, the dialogue gets ponderous... Maybe the New Species haven't had the chance to develop verbal skills, but even the human dialogue is written like no one ever spoke it out loud to hear the heaviness of it.
Characters and Dialogue are three stars. Concept and entertainment are 5 stars. So it evens out to 4 stars. And I'll still buy any future installments.

Fury (New Species Book 1) by Laurann Dohner
Hot passionate Sex, Fights, Alpha males, Mates, Forbidden love, connection like no other and you got yourself a must read, what more can you want in a book. As you can get from the description, a pharmaceutical company used human children and mixed them with animal D.N.A. resulting in a bunch of New Species that were recently set free thanks to the help of humans such as Ellie.
Ellie worked for Mercile when asked to go undercover and get the info on Mercile to help bring them down and help free the New Species. She knew she would do anything to help when she seen subject 416. Ellie had to do things she would normally never do, but knew if it went the way planed the outcome would be worth it. Ellie was sassy and easy to relate to. At times could be a little crazy but a great character.
Fury is filled with hate and a lot of that feeling is pointed to Ellie. He was used as a test subject and experimented on most of his life. With the abuse he suffered and the feelings he has for humans Fury believes the only way to be free from the rage inside is to get his revenge. He is now free and trying to help his people start their lives in homeland when he gets his chance.
A lot of heated moments, Aggression and people who can’t mid their own business, gives the reader a ride of their lives. Your body will quiver and your lower parts will thank you.
Will Ellie and Fury get over the past and start a future…. You will only know if you read the book. Trust me you will not be disappointed.

I can't believe I actually managed to force myself through this book. The plot and character development are horrid. The author treats their readers as imbeciles, repeating the same thing over and over. It opens with a rape scene that is not only unnecessary to the story, but is treated with a complete lack of care for survivors. Then there is the part where two nurses get in a cat fight over their patient. Reading this book was torture.

Great beginning of a new series of books for Laurann Dohner. DNA altered males. Hmmm... Ok sounds good to me. Really it is well written and has a very good story line. I purchased one book after another and was not disappointed.

Fury started my whole addiction to reading all the New Species books! I love the story line and of course the sex scenes were sizzling as with all upcoming books (yum). I loved Fury and Ellie's story that starts it all as well as all the New Species innocence and love for one another.

I will agree with the problem with editing/typos. Personally, I think the publisher needs better proofreaders. However, I read for the story, not for exact, proper English. Nobody's perfect, though I think they need to re-address the price because of this.
That particular complaint out of the way, I really enjoyed the story! I see/hear a lot of complaints about the rape/near-rape scene. (I say near-rape because... to some degree, it's hard to rape the willing, and her submitting is a gray area FOR A FANTASY) That's the first thing to be addressed from my personal opinion. That this is FANTASY.
Many women enjoy this sort of book from the 'near-rape' standpoint because of the basic underlying idea of being vulnerable, yet ultimately safe. For many women, who have been hurt in various ways, the way they cope is imagining what it would be like to be both vulnerable, yet ultimately safe and loved. This is something they will never have in 'real life'. There are some things that can happen that take that away from you in real life, with no way to go back.
So in this book, you can feel vulnerable with Ellie, yet ultimately safe. I don't generally enjoy that type of scene, yet I loved this book because I feel Laurann did an excellent job with that sense of both vulnerability and fear and being fully submitted to someone that, ultimately, you know is safe and trustworthy.
I don't usually read 'deeper meanings' into romance novels. They're fantasy, they're imagination, they're not supposed to be like the real world (I mean, what's the point of THAT??).
But once in a while, there's a book that has that deeper purpose/meaning/intent and it's worth noting. I probably still wouldn't have done here, except that there's so much whining about it (throughout the series).
Anyway. To sum it up... I truly enjoy the world. I love the universe Laurann has created here. I like the entire concept, and I enjoy the fantasy men in the series. Fury took some time to get me to like him, but I had faith because Ellie had spent time in his presence prior to the incident at Homeland.
I'll continue to read each new book as they come out, and hope I enjoy them as much as I did this one.

This book had a very unique storyline. It was pretty good. I was into Ellie, Justice, Slade, Tiger, Breeze and partially into Fury. He was a sweet big Teddy Bear but I wasn't totally enamored of him. This had plenty of suspense, love, and sex. A good read.

I would describe this as "Midnight Breed light." This is similar to that series and perhaps a bit of Psy-Changeling, both of which I LOVE. Plus it's like Lora Leigh's series but I'm not crazy about that one. This book was enjoyable and had well-developed characters but just not enough depth. I ordered Fury after I saw the CEO of the publishing company touting this series as highly-regarded and a top read, so I think my expectations were too high. It was an easy read - got throught it in one evening - and I've ordered the second in the series. I'm guessing this will be like other series where you get to know the characters better in each book and become more addicted (can anyone say Black Daggar Brotherhood as an example of addiction?) I'm looking forward to a book on Justice. So yes I am probably hooked but I do think many of the reviewers have over-rated this one.

Imagine a pharmaceutical company having the ability to combine DNA from humans to primates, tigers, lions or canines. Laurann Dohner has that imagination. This book is the first in the series of "New Species" books and is gripping. Mercile is the corporation that holds these experiments in cells underground in various places. Using government monies, they are tortured with medicines of unknown origins trying to build the perfect weapon. Along the way they are chained, mutilated, beaten, and only one person can stop them. Ellie is a corporate nurse who has no idea what is going on, but is hired to spy to find out. She embarks on a journey that will thrill you until the end. Although these stories are great stand alone readings, they are best when read in sequence. Can't wait to read the next one.

Start at book one though as the explanations and details of the story do lend to each book.
11-4-15 I am in the process of re-reading the entire series. I am reading a different author in between each book so I don't get burned out on these fabulous characters. I think I love them more than the first time!
