Spoiler Ahead This was book 5 in the "Blacktop Cowboys" series. Tanna Barker is a world champion barrel racer. After her mother’s unexpected death, her father has remarried, and sold the Texas ranch she called home. After she is injured she is left broken and at a standstill in her life. August Fletcher is all about his job. Being a vet for large animals in a farm town means he works all hours of the night and was always on call. Fletch has never even taken a vacation since he started his practice. He only wished he could find someone who could handle his ridiculous schedule. When a one night stand turns into something more they leave without getting each others names. When they run into each other again, Fletch saw it as a second chance with Tanna, but she was not one for anything long-term. Fletch would have been okay with that himself except he felt that there was something special between them. So he proposed that they keep seeing each other until she leaves town. Fletch, who soon started to really fall for Tanna and wanted something a little more permanent with her hoped that he can convince her to stay. Since Tanna's terrible rodeo injury she had developed a debilitating fear of horses. She couldn't go near a horse much less ride one without having a panic attack. This may be a career ender for the three-time world champion barrel racer unless she pulls through it. Fletch, despite knowing that if she can get over her fear and race professionally again he'll lose. So he worked with her and pushed Tanna harder than any one. Both were very stubborn and don't want a long-term relationship I really liked both of these characters. I love reading this series the sex scenes in this book were hot. This book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

Tanna Barker, wild child and world champion barrel racer, is about as down as a person can get. Life has dealt Tanna some rough blows lately. The death of her mother, betrayal of her father, the loss of the ranch she called home and always thought would be there, and an accident in the ring resulting in considerable injury to herself and death to her horse, Jezebel. Essentially homeless and broke Tanna's accepted a friends offer of temporary summer employment at The Split Rock in Muddy Gap, Wyoming.

Augustus Fletcher aka Doc or Fletch is a large animal vet. Alone in his practice his life is revolves around work. Firm in his belief that no woman or relationship can handle the demands of his profession his personal life is a series of one night stands or very short term quasi relationships. However; his friends' married happiness and his most recent interlude with an unnamed Texas cowgirl have him questioning that belief.

TURN AND BURN is without question my favorite in Ms. James' Blacktop Cowboy series. Tanna has lost a lot in the past couple years yet she's grown enough to realize how spoiled and selfish she was. There's still a deep down pain and her inability to deal with it gives her nightmares and holds her back. There's quite a bit more truth and growth in Tanna's future. The combination of ways Ms. James resolves Tanna's conflicts are realistic and individually suited to her. It's not one aha! flash of insight moment when everything becomes clear nor is it easy but that's as it should be. It's perfect given her character and circumstances.
Fletch has a few issues of his own but not near as many as Tanna. He also does a better job of facing and dealing with them. Fletch is a gentle giant but not someone you'd want to cross.
This is not erotica where you "open to any random page" and discover explicit scenes. Tanna and Fletch sizzle but even from the beginning there's more focus on their emotional connection and depth.
Ms. James distinguishes her books from many others in the genre in several ways.

First is the complexity and depth of her characters including the secondary players. I adore the Mud Lilies and love that the older characters aren't marginalized or treated dismissively. They're respected, valued, and very much a part of the action. One of my favorite scenes is when the Mud Lilies initiate Tanna. The scene that actually brought tears to my eyes also involved one of the Mud Lilies.

It's never just about sex. Sure, there's plenty of spice and heat but there's always that underlying emotional and mental connection that transcends mere sex. Tanna and Fletch really plumb those depths on their journey. Very satisfying.

Ms. James' personal knowledge of cowboys, ranch's, and rodeo life give outsiders an intimate insider's look at the reality rather than the Hollywood version. Not for everyone but I love experiencing it vicariously.

There's a strong sense of continuity, community, and family. Within that framework we catch up on the lives of previously introduced characters in a completely natural way thanks to that connectivity. Almost like visiting home.

Fletch and Tanna definitely spoke to me and I really liked who Tanna grew to be. In my humble opinion TURN AND BURN delivered on every level and set the standard for subsequent books to measure up to.

So she goes to Wyoming and stop in the town before her friends town and go out to drink to get free drinks and meet Dr. Fletcher, DVM and they have a one night stand. Never exchanging names on the first night. Little surprise he happens to be her friends vet. He helps her find her way with help of her cousin and another rodeo celeb to finding her footing with horses again. And he also helps her & himself in love. It is a wonderful story.

Fifth in the Blacktop Cowboys romance series and revolving around a set of rancher and rodeo friends in Wyoming. The couple focus is on Tanna Barker and Dr. August Fletcher.

My Take
It starts off with a bang and a very knowing Tanna drumming up free drinks. It's funny listening to her maneuver and manipulate all these wanna-be cowboys.
It's such a guy thing to say, that it grabs your attention when Tanna tells the stud: "Let's cut to the chase. I like sex. There isn't a substitute for the way naked flesh feels sliding together in the heat of passion…"

It's a sweet turn that the hot guy wakes up to an empty bed and fixates on his bed partner. Who she was, where she is, and how can he hook up again. In fact, it's definitely the shoe, er, boot, on the other foot with a lovestruck Fletch up against the love-em-and-leave-em cowgirl.
"…I've spent most of my life broke. It ain't all bad.
The upside is no one ever hits me up for a loan."

It's good fun with a slight bit of catch-up with characters from previous stories. There's a lot of back-and-forth between Tanna and the various men, but Fletch definitely has her attention.

Oh, lol, for all the worldliness Harlow tries to pull off, the boys mess this girl up when it comes to tie-downs and tied-ups. Makes me wonder if there's a book on Harlow comin' up.

It's a rough time for Tanna. The accident has her all messed up, it's thrown her for one huge loop, and it'll take friends and a lot of patience. It's also a time for Tanna to look into herself and realize some unhappy truths.

The sex is fun, and so is the courtship as these two try to decide what they're doing. My one niggle is, what is with that "sugar twang"?? "Thang" I could understand…

The Story
Needing a place to lick her wounds, Tanna Barker shows up in Rawlins, Wyoming, and gets lucky with a stud who happens to be good in bed. Once she gets to Celia's, she finds out that the Split Rock has temporary staffing problems. It'll prove a useful stopgap until Tanna finds herself.

It just so happens that Cora railroads Fletch into taking time off, time he intends to spend working on that breeding program. At Renner's resort. Where Tanna is staying.

The Characters
Jezebel was THE horse, but now Tanna Barker is a terrified two-time World Champion Barrel Racer, scared witless by horses. Garrett is her brother and just started a job as a security specialist in Denver. Her dad sounds like an absolute jerk. Rosalie was her mom's best friend; Lucinda is her daughter and has her own questions. The family ranch came together through sweat and hard work when her grandfather and Great-Uncle Manuel slowly built it up.

Dr. August "Fletch" Fletcher is the local, very hot, veterinarian who mostly works on-site. Cora is his longtime office manager. Bruce Fletcher is his retired dad. Fletch's mother, Darla Fast Dog, had been an absentee mother until she died. Ashley was one of Fletch's assistants who didn't work out. Might'a been those four-inch heels.

The pregnant-again Celia Lawson Gilchrist is her best friend and married to Kyle ( One Night Rodeo , 4). Brianna and Jason are their kids, and Patches is their blue heeler while Flutterbee is Bri's. Mickey is Celia's barrel-racing horse. Sherry is Kyle's momma, and she's bought into Buckeye Joe's. Lainie and Hank Lawson are friends as well.

Eli Whirling Cloud is a long time horse trainer, Fletch's cousin, and good friend to Celia. He's also a magical horse whisperer whom Celia believes can help Tanna. Summer Red Stone is his girlfriend? wife? Aggie is one of Eli's horses; Gus is the Belgian draft horse. Andie is a young social worker who brings a group of at-risk Native American girls out to Eli's.

The Mud Lilies include…
…Garnet, Vivien, Tilda who loves her dog Ripper, Maybelle Linburg who writes the society column for the Muddy Gap Gazette, Bernice, and Pearl, all shareholders in the Split Rock, and no man dares to say them nay, lol. Nor can they be out-drunk.

Ike is a fast-talkin' cattle broker. Holt and Max are gettin' friendly with Tanna. Harland and Kirk Ludlow are brothers running a sheep operation. Renee is Harland's wife, and Betsy is Kirk's. The kids include Harland Jr. and Ellie who has dibs on Fletch.

The Split Rock is…
…a multipurpose ranch. The more obvious aspect is its guest ranch side. Tierney Jackson is married to Renner, in charge of resort finances, and pregnant with her first baby. Tierney's sister, Harlow Pratt, will be coming to help staff the resort. Seems Tierney's example has made Daddy re-think his principles. And Renner won't let her get away with anything, lol.

Janie is Celia's sister-in-law (married to Abe in Wrangled and Tangled , 3) is in charge of sales and PR at the resort, but she's just had her second baby.

Harper Turner is married to Bran ( Saddled and Spurred , 2), and they have Tate. During the branding, she delivered another son, Jake. Wild West Clothiers is the clothing shop inside the resort and Harper's other "baby". Liberty and Bailey are Harper's sisters, and both are in the military.

The less obvious aspects include the rodeo stock business, running heads of cattle, and now this potential breeding program.

Some of the employees live in trailers at the ranch: Hugh is the foreman for Renner's stock contracting company; Tobin is the jack-of-all-trades who'll run the commercial stock-breeding business; Dave and Yvette are the groundskeeper and head of housekeeping; and now, Tanna.

Devin McClain is a "smokin-hot country music sensation" and an old friend of Tanna's. Ronna is a one of Lainie's neighbors and organized the feast after the branding. Ralph Costas is the rep for Jezebel's owners. Sutton Grant, a steer wrestling champion, is visiting Eli for some help on his own issues. Fife is an old family friend of Sutton's who helped out earlier. Braxton is a metal artist. Wally and June Gansett have a cabin by the lake.

Dr. Arneson, Dr. Tasha Anderson, and Dr. Jet Eriksen conspire with Cora to force Fletch into a vacation.

Chuck and Berlin Gradsky own the Grade A Horse Farm and own Madera, a seven-year-old mare lookin' for a rider. Natalie Finch rode until Natalie broke her legs. The bitchy Annabeth Edmunds is a cutting horse queen and too interested in Fletch. And the Edmunds are good paying customers.

Billy Bob's Texas is the world's largest honky-tonk.

The Cover and Title
The cover is that golden yellow hazing the Wyoming pastures, the lazy river, and its cloudy sky while a small herd of horses grazes in the distance. Close up, it's a red barrel on its side and Fletch in white Stetson, a red and white plaid shirt with the sleeves rolled up and the shirt open, exposing that six-pack. Mmmm-hmmm…

The title refers to a maneuver in barrel racing: Turn and Burn, baby.

A sweetly romantic yet scorching hot romance, Turn and Burn is a poignant, naughty and thoroughly captivating read. This fifth installment in the Blacktop Cowboys series is just as fresh and appealing as the first, and Lorelei James continues to bring readers realistic storylines that are full of emotions and intensely erotic sex scenes.

Tanna Barker is a three times world champion barrel racer whose world has been turned upside down in recent years. She lost her anchor when her mother died and her father sold the family ranch but it is a devastating barrel racing accident that she haunts her. Broke and with no place to go while she tries to figure out her next move, Tanna takes a temporary job at the Split Rock Ranch and Resort. The last thing Tanna needs is another complication in her life but her smoldering attraction to veterinarian August "Fletch" Fletcher is too powerful to ignore. Their "just friends" agreement takes a pulse-pounding and panty-drenching turn but is there any chance of a future for this passionate couple?

Tanna has mostly recovered from her physical injuries, but her emotional wounds are far from healed. Suffering severe post traumatic stress, Tanna is terrified of horses and unable to resolve her grief over the loss of the horse she was riding when she had her accident. Tanna has dedicated her life to her career and without barrel racing, what does the future hold for her?

Fletch is a workaholic whose dedication to his job has left him with little time for a personal life. A forced vacation gives him provides him the chance to spend time with Tanna and their relationship flourishes as they get to know one another. Fletch's return to work brings a surprising career opportunity that would give him much needed balance in his personal and professional lives. But a future with Tanna is far from certain when she makes an unexpected career decision of her own.

Tanna and Fletch are richly drawn, three dimensional characters facing real life issues. Tanna has a strong and vibrant personality and Fletch is a fantastic match for her. Fletch is a take charge kind of man but he also has an incredibly soft and nurturing side too. He knows when to push Tanna and even though she does not go down without a fight, Tanna learns to trust his instincts.

Tanna's and Fletch's relationship is fiery and passion-filled but there are plenty of tender moments between them as well. Their blistering hot sex scenes are exquisitely detailed and while there are plenty of them, they never overpower the overall story. There is an emotional connection between Tanna and Fletch and some of their best scenes together are simple everyday moments where they are just getting to know one another. For the most part, there is very little conflict between them, but when it does arise they resolve it quickly with very little angst.

Fans of the Blacktop Cowboy series will be delighted by guest appearances by favorite characters from the previous novels. Hands down, the best scenes in Turn and Burn feature the feisty Mud Lilies. They do not let a little thing like age slow them down and they are rowdy and fun loving. Keep the tissues handy because there is a moving and highly emotional story arc with one of these sassy women that will make even the most stalwart reader cry. Not great big boohooing gut-wrenching sobs but plan on shedding a few tears.

Turn and Burn is a beautiful love story with depth and substance and it is a wonderful addition to Blacktop Cowboy series. Lorelei James delivers yet another breathtaking romance that will leave readers eagerly awaiting the next novel in this tantalizing and addicting series.

Turn and Burn (Blacktop Cowboys). Lorelei James.
Review from jeannie zelos book reviews.
I love romance with a sensual spicy edge and Lorelei does that so well. Of course as a horse lover/rider I enjoy ones set in an equine scene too so this book is a double whammy for me.
Tanna is a great lead, having been injured while riding also I understand her fear of getting back on – or even getting close to a horse. I was never in her league being a happy hacker rather than competition orientated, but the clammy, choking, paralysing fear is the same whatever and Lorelei writes that so well – I felt the fear with Tanna. I like books that tell the story through dialogue, have characters that feel real and allow me to feel “in” the scene, and here I could envisage so clearly what was happening. Hot ans sexy Vet Fletch was a fabulous character too – that man certainly has a way with words – and actions!
I really enjoyed this story, loved meeting all the characters and they were a great mix esp the “older” ladies. That scene where Fletch has to PTS the elderly dog of one of them had me really choked. For many of us pets are family and we grieve for them just the same. I loved the people, enjoyed the world setting created – as a UK resident the rodeo/barrel racing world is one I can only imagine but Lorelei brings it alive. The book was a great read, kept me glued until the end, and the sex scenes were scorching and sensual. I've only one tiny criticism – and being a real drama lover in my romance it is a personal one that most readers won't worry about – and that's the highs were terrific, and the lows where Tanna is struggling with her career and current phobia were perfect, but when it came to a relationship low between her and Fletch I didn't really feel it – I like to have a sad part where I can wallow, and although I felt there were things they needed to overcome they weren't really deep enough to make me feel moved to tears. Sucker that I am I enjoy the downs as they make the highs so much sweeter.
Anyway – a great read, at £5.17 for 342 pages.
Stars: four and a half, just that bit more :( and I’d have gone five.

Turn and Burn is part of Lorelei James Blacktop Cowboy series and fans of western romance will just love this. If you are looking for an erotic and realistic tale then this is for you. Full of angst and fire this author never disappoints.
This book introduces Tanna a heroine who has always lived her life to the max but now she's injured and hurting. Her life has completely changed and all she has left is herself. No longer feeling able to ride the horses she has always loved she takes a job working at a friends ranch and has a one night stand that will change her life. Determined to just stay fancy free Tanna may have enjoyed her time with the gorgeous cowboy Fletch but he just might have other ideas!
Fletch is a man used to getting his own way. A local vetanerian he works twenty four seven and loves his life. Having his own practice has meant little time for romance but meeting Tanna makes him stop and think. This is one woman that he wants to spend a lot more time with. He a demanding man both in and out of the bedroom and what he wants more than anything is to break down the walls that Tanna has built around herself.
Fabulous read. Impossible not to really like the two lead characters as Tanna is just so wild and yet fragile at the same time. A woman who has never been afraid to take a stand and yet now she's seriously in need of some good loving. Fletch is the man to deliver and then some! It's obvious that life is just passing him by and meeting Tanna is what he really needs.
I must be honest and say this is my first of Ms James Blacktop Cowboy series although I am a huge fan of her Rough Riders books. I found this to be a lot more emotional and plot driven then other books I have read by her. I wouldn't class this as erotica but to my mind I'd describe this is a very sensuous romance . Yes it is a hot read at times but the story is definitely focused on the characters and their development . A really heart warming tale and told in the authors usual fabulous style. Great story, lots of good loving and emotion to tug on your heart strings ! Get this book!

Turn and Burn, Blacktop Cowboys #5, by Lorelei James
Grade: B

"Nothin' will make me run from you, Tanna. You can punch me. slap me, scream at me. You're a little bitty thing. I'm a big guy. I can take whatever you dish out."

After the death of both her mother, her horse and a crippling accident that took months to recover from Tanna Barker has no idea what to with her life. Once a three time world champion barrel racer, Tanna now has panic attacks when she even thinks of climbing up on a horse and she knows she must somehow conquer her fear. Tanna needs a change of pace and the Slim Rock Resort is in need of some extra help for the summer. One her way to her new job Tanna meets a sexy stranger who turns her whole world upside down.

August "Fletch" Fletcher has spent everyday since he graduated from veterinary school building his practice which leaves no time for dating. Meeting a sexy Texan cowgirl in a bar one night shakes his world and when he runs into her again Fletch knows he can't lose her again. Between Fletch's dedication to his job and Tanna's fear of commitment and horses these two need each other more than they know to both finally beat their demons.

If you love cowboys, especially sexy, alpha cowboys, you need to be reading Lorelei James and her Blacktop Cowboys series. This series has everything: cowboys, sex scenes that can burn the pages, romance and smart, sassy women. What else could anyone ask for??? Turn and Burn is the fifth installment of the series and it does not disappoint. It picks up not far after the fourth book and I highly recommend reading this series is order so you don't get confused.

Both Tanna and Fletch have been introduced in past books and I was so happy to see them get together. Tanna is a spitfire and she had me cracking up for the majority of the book. I like that she is who she is and doesn't try to change for Fletch. I did get annoyed with how she treated Fletch after a while but she did redeem herself in the end. I loved Fletch so much and they way he helps Tanna with her fears made me just love him even more. I wasn't a big fan of his jealousy but no one's perfect.

Turn and Bun is a great cowboy erotic romance and I really enjoyed every single page. This is a must read series for me and I can't wait to see who's book we get next (I'm hoping Harlow's). This book has just the right amount of romance, erotica, cowboys and sassy cowgirls that will keep every romance reader enthralled for over three hundred pages.

Lorelei James has done it again! What Jaci Burton did to racecar drivers and J.R. Ward did to Vampires, James has done to cowboys. She has taken an excellent cast of characters, plunked them in the middle of Wyoming, and created amazing romances each and every time. Turn and Burn, her newest release, may be my favorite so far, featuring daredevil horserider Tanna and sweet Veterinarian, August "Fletch" Fletcher

Tanna is heading to Wyoming from her home state of Texas following the death of her Mother and a pretty horrific injury that severely hurt her and caused the death of her horse. As she arrives, penniless, alone, and starved for attention, she meets Fletch, the town's Vet.

Fletch is different than James' other heroes. While there is plenty of hot sex, for which James' cowboy books are known for, this novel seemed much more charged mentally and emotionally. Fletch understands Tanna has been emotionally scarred and I enjoyed their journey together in helping to realize her fears and overcome them. Tanna is scarred and her journey to being the rider she once was is not smooth sailing. James tackles these topics head on in
a realistic manner and everything isn't all right in an instant.

While I loved the naughty parts, Turn and Burn had just the right mixture of emotional connection to create an amazing story that made me wish it didn't end. The only disappointment I had, was the ending, because I would have liked a bit of a update on what had happened with the other characters from previous books. The sense of community is wonderful and there is truly a world built within these books.

Turn and Burn is a fantastic addition to the world James has created. I loved the mixture of fast talking Texas girl Tanna and laid back Fletch. Each is so different from what the other is used to and find missing piece in one another. Great characters, a fun story, and even better sex scenes equal another hit from Lorelei James.

Veterinarian August Fletcher has always put his job first. He's never found a woman who could handle his on-the-road lifestyle. But when sassy, sexy Tanna blows into town, he finally finds the woman of his fantasies. And there's something between them, but she claims she's been burned by love 'em and leave 'em road dogs before. How can Fletch prove that he's in it for the long haul, and that their sizzling relationship is better than winning any rodeo medal? It'll take some sweet persuasion to convince Tanna that Muddy Gap is where she belongs.

I love the cowboys that Ms. James creates; they are sexy and alpha and usually find themselves in trouble when they met that special woman. Family is usually involved that bring more enjoyable characters to the scenes.

Tanna Barker is a little on the wild side, she grew up in Texas and was a spoiled young girl that had a doting mother who took care of her when she was home during the rodeo off season. She is moving to Wyoming to get her head together and contemplate what she is going to do with the rest of her life. Her world collapsed two years ago when she was crushed under a horse while barrel racing, soon after her mother died her father sold everything and disappeared from her life. Not only is she unsure, she is unable to be near a horse without being terrified.

Tanna is in the mood to have fun, so while having a drink at a bar she creates a bit of havoc with the locals while getting them to buy her a drink, she gets "caught" by a tall good looking cowboy and they have some hot and steamy anonymous sex that they both remember days later.

Fletch is the local veterinarian, a workaholic that just fell into this job that does not seem to be a passion for him. He is however passionate about the woman he met recently and is surprised to find her working at the Spit Rock Ranch helping the Gilchrist's for the summer. As they meet again sparks fly and the summer is filled with possibilities.

This is a wonderful story about finding yourself, Tanna feels disconnected to others and desperately to want to belong somewhere. You can really feel the pain in her, not only her physical pain since she is still working through some issues with her leg, but also emotional, she grew up on a horse and now that she is scared to go near one she is devastated. Fletch is also finding himself, not sure what he wants yet he seems to bury himself in his work. I like how although Tanna says she is only there temporarily and does not want a relationship, she is still attracted to Fletch. The first few pages are scorching, and then the story mellows as the two get to know each other and find that they like being together, I enjoyed the pace immensely, they do find some humor in their relationship as they establish friendship rules and have a tendency to break them.

I thought Fletch was possessive from the start, he hated anyone being around Tanna, even before he knew her name and as they got better acquainted I could understand his alpha tendencies because - hey they are cowboys from Lorelei James and she is all about those alpha men. I liked how you can tell he really wants to help Tanna get over her fears, yet he almost resents what will happened if she is triumphant, she would be leaving to chase that buckel.

This is a great addition to the series and I so enjoyed visiting Wyoming again through the eyes of these fun characters. I enjoy seeing the couples from previous books, how happy they are as the years go by. As always this author is an auto buy for me as she creates those men and women in the western world that you just enjoy reading about.

Sexy, panty melting cowboys. TURN AND BURN and the whole Blacktop Cowboys series are a MUST READ! I should stop the review at that. But I know you are probably expecting more so let me detail why Lorelei James is the best at what she does, and TURN AND BURN is just another example that all of this applies:
Her books always feel real to me. She's actually writing about people who you might know. They're everyday people, with everyday issues. Their lives aren't sugar-coated and she's not trying to hard to make them work as a cowboy story.
Her heroes are to die for sexy, but rugged. Not pretty boys that mind getting down and dirty (in more ways than one)
The sense of unity, friendship and family. The Blacktop Cowboys are not McKays but the friendship between all of the previous characters still gives you that bond that keeps you invested in their lives long after the last word on their HEA.
Her heroines are so awesome I want to move to Muddy Gap just so I can be friends with them and get to hang out.

So TURN AND BURN is the anticipated story of Tanna Barker, 3-time world champion barrel racer and Celia's best friend. She is having some issues after her accident and is afraid to get back on a horse. Without competing, she has no money. So Cela gets her a job for the summer and the opportunity to work with Eli on her new fear of horses.

Tanna is my favorite type of heroine. She's strong but a bit broken. Independent to a fault. The kind of girl that may not let many people in but has a heart of gold under the crusty exterior. She's also the biggest flirt around and has self confidence to boot. What's not to love?

August Fletcher is the town's vet. He knows the whole gang and has become good friends with them. He's also a workaholic. He came from nothing and now has his own practice and that means crazy hours. This has been hell on his personal life and not the most conducive for him to have an actual relationship.

When Tanna and Fletcher first meet they don't even exchange names and have a hot one night stand. Standard for both of them. But fate has different plans when they end up in the same area and friends with the same group. The chemistry that was there from the beginning can't be denied and it quickly translates from purely physical to a deeper emotional connection as Tanna lets him in.

I loved that they both had their own issues to work through. Fletcher had to figure out a way to prioritize his life and not let work take over. Tanna had to get back on the saddle and do what she loves. But you couldn't have picked two people that better complemented each other.

If you didn't pre-order your copy of TURN AND BURN (which makes no sense to me because Lorelei James should be an auto-buy), then you should get it now. Just be warned...her cowboys are all mine!

Tanna is spending her summer in Muddy Gap while she gets her life back together after the accident that has kept her away from what she loves - horses and barrel racing. Never one to think twice about spending the night with a guy, she hooks up with a handsome, enigmatic man.

Fletch doesn't have time for a relationship, but after seeing his friends settling down he feels like something's missing from his life. But again, his practice as a large animal veterinarian doesn't leave him much time to think about it, so he settles for one-night stands when the need arises. That is until Tanna. He can't stop thinking about the feisty, passionate woman he spend the night with.

Ha! This was such a great read. I loved it all!

Once again, Lorelei James brings about the sexy, cowboy romance we have come to expect from her. But this time around she brings along a good deal of emotions with it too. I got the hot alpha-cowboy with a caring and tender side paired up with a strong-headed, insatiable, troubled woman. What more could you ask for? Wonderful, well-written characters, scorching-hot sex scenes, emotional moments and honest and flirtatious dialog. I read it in once sitting and wanted more!

I loved the way Tanna and Fletch were brought together. Their relationship developed over time with a good foundation of friendship and trust. This in turn helped to solidify their connection , thus making it easier for me to accept their crazy arrangement and cheer them on to make it something more. I appreciated that the romance wasn't rushed or all wrapped up with a pretty bow. There were doubts, hesitations, attitudes and major disagreements, but along with these were the emotional confessions, the tender moments and the honest exchange of needs. And fiery-hot sex, sex, sex. A very enjoyable read, indeed!

Of course, I enjoyed catching up with all the other characters from previous books. It was nice to see Renner and Tierney, Hank and Lanie, and Celia and Kyle. I enjoyed their interactions with the main characters and the humor and banter they added to the story. I especially enjoyed the Mud Lilies. Those little old ladies cracked me up!

Although Turn and Burn is the fifth book in the Blacktop Cowboys series it can be read as a stand alone too. I can't wait for more. There are many possibilities for romance with all those hot cowboys, but I'm especially interested in Tobin's story. Yum!

I received this title from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange of my honest opinion.

Three time world-champion barrel racer Tanna Barker is at loose ends. Since her mother's death and the riding accident which left her petrified of horses and effectively ended her rodeo career she doesn't know what to do with herself. Tanna's a hell-raiser and doesn't bother to censor her own speech but she's discomfited by her own fears and with her mother gone doesn't even have a home to return to where she can lick her wounds in private. Fortunately she has great friends in Muddy Gap who not only offer her a place to stay but a job as well while she sorts herself out.

Rather than impose on her friends in Muddy Gap Tanna opts to check herself into a dive motel in Rawlings within stumbling blocks of a bar. It's her one last chance to be shamelessly wild for a while. Booze and a never ending line up of wanna-be cowboys seems to be the name of the game and Tanna loves shocking them into backing down in their pursuit of her - until one man in particular dares to call her on her inventive scare tactics and entices her to concentrate all her reckless desires on him.

Large animal veterinarian August Fletcher takes his job very seriously. He understands that the livelihoods of his customers depend on the wellbeing of their animals which is just one of the reasons why he is constantly on the road from one farm to another and always on call. Marriage and family are just a pipe dream since he knows no woman is going to want to put up with his sort of work schedule. He doesn't even date seriously; instead, he seeks one night stands or short term relationships based on nothing more than sexual satisfaction - until he encounters Tanna.

TURN AND BURN had me laughing out loud within just the first couple pages and the story just takes on a life of its own from there. Tanna and August might have started off as nothing more than a one night stand but it's obvious that he wants more and the attraction is mutual on Tanna's end but she has issues that she needs to overcome before she can consider anything serious with anyone. Tanna's lack of a censor button is so much fun. You really just never know what's going to come out of her mouth, at the same time her debilitating fear of horses is heartbreaking since it's obvious she loved the rodeo and barrel racing. August won me over with his compassionate nature - whether it's animals or people he's a wonderful man who deserves a break and a good woman. Laughter, tears, long heartfelt sighs, and blinding hurt are all a part of life and Ms. James does a brilliant job incorporating them all into this heartfelt story.

TURN AND BURN is the fifth title in the BLACKTOP COWBOYS series - and I certainly hope to get the opportunity to revisit these characters as well as the others in future releases.
Other titles in the series are:
CORRALLED - released August 2010
SADDLED AND SPURRED - released March 2011
WRANGLED AND TANGLED - released November 2011
ONE NIGHT RODEO - released August 2012

Turn and Burn by Lorelei James
Contemporary Romance -Aug 6th, 2013
4 stars

Turn and Burn is the latest, sizzling installment in the author's popular Blacktop Cowboys series.

Tanna Barker's fabulous lifestyle as a world champion barrel racer comes to an abrupt halt with an injury and the death of her horse. Now she has nightmares and is terrified of horses. She lives on the road in a trailer and `picks up' men to idle the time. Then her friend offers her a job at a ranch resort. But on the way she has one last fling. A hot an steamy night with a man who wants more. However, Tanna is through with love and men. She leaves him in the dust. Only to find him as a regular visitor to the ranch where she works! For August Fletcher is the area veterinarian.

Fetch can't get the sassy cowgirl Tanna out of his head. He regrets not getting her number. When he spies her at the Split Rock Ranch he is determined to get her attention and keep it. But Tanna has demons in her past. Trust and love are not easy for her. Plus Fletch's work keeps him constantly on-call and on the road. Can he woo Tanna and show her that her heart is safe with him?

Steamy and sexy this book starts out a riot as Tanna is on her way to her new job. Stopping at a bar she is propositioned by several men that she hilariously turns down. But when she meets Fletch the sparks fly and soon they are hot and heavy! I liked that Tanna was feisty and smart. She has a comeback for everything and is guaranteed to keep readers very entertained. (Although I did find Tanna frequent cursing a bit irritating to read after a while.) Fletch seems like a low key, loyal man who is too nice. However, when it comes to Tanna, Fletch is in hot pursuit and very persuasive. I liked how Fletch pursues the reluctant Tanna. Tanna realizes that she is wounded and a relationship is the last thing she needs to deal with. But Fletch's kindness and hot body are too tempting and soon she finds herself craving his company. (As usual, the sex scenes are super steamy!) As Tanna grows and tries to get over her fear of horses and her past
disappointments, I cheered for her.

Although not my favorite in the series, this is a very satisfying and sexy western that readers will love.

Turn and Burn is book five of the Blacktop Cowboys series by Lorelei James. However it is the first book that I have read of the series. I was a little worried about jumping in at the middle of the series as I had heard that you needed to be familiar with the characters before reading this one but I had no trouble at all. Even though the books share some of the same characters you can definitely read this one as a standalone. However I have to say after reading this one I do want to go back and read the rest of the series that came before so I can read the stories of some of the other characters. Now on to the review.

Barrell racer (3 time world champ) Tanna has had a hard time of it lately. In the past 2 years she has lost her mom, her father sold her family home out from under her and she suffered a serious accident that left her injured and her favorite horse dead. Now she has a horrible fear of horses and is afraid she will never get on one again. Looking to sort some things out in her life she takes on a temp job selling clothing and tending bar at a resort / ranch in Muddy Gap where some of her rodeo friends live.

Large animal Vet August Fletcher (Fletch) has always put his business first. He doesn't have time for relationships since he get called away to animal emergencies all hours of the night on a daily basis. So its just easier to have meaningless get-togethers than to ask a woman to put up with his un predictable schedule. Neither one expects to find their perfect match after a meaningless one night stand.

I love Tanna and Fletch. Lorelie couldn't come up with better characters in my opinion. Both have their issues but together are so darn sexy and funny. Tanna is such a hoot, and Fletch likes to point out that her mouth has no filter and he knows exactly how to give her a bit of her own. I was literally laughing from the first scene of the book. The was one of those great stories that you wanted to finish to see how things turned out but then you're upset when you realize that the book is through. It's a great steamy humorous read !

Ms. Lorelei James has done it again! This is another great book in the Blacktop Cowboys series!

Tanna Barker is a world champion barrel racer. But her personal life has been less of a success, and she's feeling adrift. After her mother's unexpected death, her father has remarried, and sold the Texas ranch she called home. Now a rodeo injury has left the restless spitfire holed up in Muddy Gap, unsure what her next move should be.

Until she meets her match in a wild, wild cowboy

Veterinarian August Fletcher has always put his job first. He's never found a woman who could handle his on-the-road lifestyle. But when sassy, sexy Tanna blows into town, he finally finds the woman of his fantasies. And there's something between them, but she claims she's been burned by love 'em and leave 'em road dogs before. How can Fletch prove that he's in it for the long haul, and that their sizzling relationship is better than winning any rodeo medal? It'll take some sweet persuasion to convince Tanna that Muddy Gap is where she belongs.

After a chance meeting and a one night stand Tanna and Fletcher are drawn together. They are both workaholics but find time to come together to make their relationship work. Tanna is finally able to overcome her fear of horses and regain her championship status with the help of Fletcher and her friends.

This is a must read boob from the amazing Lorelei James. If you have never read any of her books, I recommend you start at the beginning so you can be drawn into the world of Rough Riders and Blacktop Cowboys.

Turn and Burn is book five of Lorelei James' Blacktop Cowboys series. It can certainly stand on its own as I have not read any of the previous books in this series and still enjoyed it tremendously. Even though Ms. James is one of my all-time favorite authors, for some reason I just haven't gotten to this series yet. I do plan to remedy that in the near future however and read the series in its entirety.

Fletch was a superb character who is a complete workaholic. I enjoyed watching him not only come to terms with this but also come to the realization that he really is looking for a life outside of work. Tanna is a rodeo queen who suffered a tremendous setback both physically and mentally. Even though both of them are insistent that theirs is just a friends with benefits relationship, it is obvious they are both falling head over heels.

Similar to all other books of Ms. James that I have enjoyed on the past, this one definitely has great character development, an enjoyable, well written, engaging plot and is a major scorcher in the heat department. I look forward to catching up on all the secondary characters stories contained in the first four books of the series.

Tanna Barker is pretty awesome, she made me laugh loudly from the moment I met her in this book. Her attitude and personality are amazing, especially considering how much she's hurting and struggling with recovering from her injury.

August "Fletch" Fletcher is blown away by Tanna from the moment he meets her and I adored that about him. He dishes right back to her and is so caring and giving with his community, and I can't help but love someone who is so kind to animals and skittish women.

When these two get together it's explosive and I enjoyed watching these two dance around each other and try and make it work as more than just a fling. There were a few moments of misunderstandings between them where I wanted to shake them both and say talk to each other. That's something I love about Ms. James' writing, she not only brings the heat she brings the emotions that have me so drawn into the story that I let the rest of my life fall away and just become so interested in the journey.

Overall this is a delicious story between a cowgirl and a cowboy and a explosively hot ride that makes me want to run off to Wyoming to find my own cowboy.

I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review. I was not compensated for my review.

Such a wonderful addition to the Blacktop Cowboys series! Tanna and Fletch are a couple to take note from. They are able to be in love and completely smitten with each other, without losing their own identities. The best part of the story is Fletch's determination and commitment to Tanna. He won't let her run away from her fears or from him. It was also great to catch up with all of the other heroes and heroines from previous books and see how their families and love have grown. Lorelei James has a penchant for creating worlds and characters that suck you in and you cannot wait to revisit. Tanna is my favorite type of heroine, she has no qualms about speaking her mind, and she does not just assume the worst and create a twist in the plot without an explanation. As for Fletch, he is one of those heroes that loves with his whole heart, and is completely dedicated to his work and friends. Fletch definitely makes my list of top book boyfriends of 2013. Turn and Burn is a definite must buy!

Remember Lainey's and Cecelia's horny bff Tanna? Well this is her story. She got paired with Fletcher the big lovable Vet giant. When I first saw this i was like hold up. Where is Devin? I thought she would end up with him. But I'm glad she made it with the lovable Vet. Ms James is a wonderful storyteller. She made me feel as if I was reading about my own family history or had me imagining myself there just listening to the story instead of just reading it. Fletcher was such a sweetheart. The things he did for Tanna were just amazing, especially helping her get back into riding after her accident. One part of the book that brought me to tears was the part where Tilda's dog died and Fletcher was there with Tanna. The emotion on those two pages were just unreal. After a little bit of "not saying I love you first" we finally got our HEA. We got to grow with Tanna's and Fletcher's love with every page. The sex scenes were SO hot also. Even gave me a little inspiration for the hubby *wink wink* All in all this was a great read. It was good to see some past characters and hearing about how their lives were going. I'm sure by Devin's and Tobin's book (hopefully) Lainey and Hank will have that big ranch hand of kids.

Turn and Burn: A Blacktop Cowboys Novel This fifth entry in Lorelie James' Blacktop Cowboys series, is a wonderful addition to the series. It starts with a "bang", in more ways than one. Tanna Barker, a Texas born and bred cowgirl and 3 time World Champion Barrel Racer, has moved temporarily to Muddy Gap, Wyoming, after suffering serious losses both personally and professionally. She meets her match in August "Fletch" Fletcher, a large animal veterinarian. He has been so focused on building his veterinary practice that he has not much of a personal life, and has always been the one being left in relationships due to the amount of time he devotes to his clients and the never-ending middle of the night client calls. Tanna, the wild child, has been in numerous "relationships" in the past, but isn't looking for Mr. Right, but rather Mr. Right Now. Little did she know how much Fletch would turn her world around.

As is typical for me with every Lorelei James book, I laughed (out loud - multiple times), I cried, I grieved, and I rejoiced. Being a romance, of course there is a happy ending, and I'm sure as this series continues we will see more of Tanna and Fletch and how their relationship is growing.

In my personal opinion, no author is better at creating western contemporary romances. While the relationship of the couple, along with their family and friends, is the main focus of every Lorelei James book, she kicks the door open to what happens in the bedroom (or the barn or pickup cab, as it were.) Sex for the sake of sex is never the focus of a Lorelei James book. It is part of each relationship as it evolves, but is definitely not the main point in any of her books. There are a number of authors out there who write gratuitous erotic books (new sex scenes every page and a half.) You won't find that in a Lorelei James book. It's part of the story, but definitely not the main focus. You will NEVER go wrong with any Lorelei James book you choose to read. Her cowboys and cowgirls are unforgettable!

Though each book can be read as a stand alone, it's highly suggested that the books be read in order, as you will see how the communities and stories are built upon one another. You will get so much more out of each book if you have read the stories in order.

Sexy Veterinarian Fletch has met his match when Tanna, the provocative, champion barrel racer comes to Muddy Gap.

Looking for a great summer read; then I recommend Lorelei James' latest Blacktop Cowboy release, Turn and Burn. This would have been the perfect vacation day read, but I could not wait until September (no way). So this book made me late to work; forced me to take an extended lunch, and I was so impatient to get home to finish that I left early. As always Ms. James characters are incredible. I love that the heroine is unapologetic when it comes to her desires; Fletch complements her perfectly. Of course, the writing style pulled me in and held me hostage.

August Fletcher DMV and 3 time past golden buckle barrel champion Tanna.

She is staying in Oklahoma to help out some friends plus she needs the money. It seems like everyone is trying to help her get past her fear of horses. She used to love them until her accident that left her seriously injured and her horse Jezebel dead.

She has a one night stand on her way to town. This guy is amazing but it is only for one night. No names, no strings.

Until she she sees them man again…It's hot and sweet and they fit together quite nicely. They both have their own set of demons but overcoming them will lead to a beautiful HEA.

Nothing earth shatter. No world problems solved. But it is hot, juicy and a decent read.

Turn and Burn is book 5 in Lorelei James Blacktop Cowboys series. LJ always provides us with sexy cowboys and HOT sex, Turn and Burn is another shining example of why her books are an automatic buy for so many of us!
I have looked forward to Tanna's story for a long time now and the glimpses that we have gotten of Fletcher have peaked my curiosity - so to finally see/read these 2 Burn up the pages was a guaranteed 5 star read for me! As always we get just enough of my past faves to satisfy but this can still be read as a stand alone if need be... although I don't know why someone wouldn't want to read every single word that LJ graces us with!! GRAB THIS BOOK AND READ IT!

This is the 5th book in the Blacktop Cowboys series and quite possibly my favorite one. I've read them all and was so excited that Tanna would finally get her HEA and was even more excited to find out it would be with August Fletcher (Fletch). I've been waiting for his story since he first appeared in Saddled and Spurred (#2).

This book has all the steamy attraction James is famous for along with the emotional and romantic depth that is true to her signature western style. Fletch is everything you'd expect from a true cowboy veterinarian with a seriously sexy side that doesn't disappoint or wander into predictable. Tanna is the tough and rowdy cowgirl we saw in the previous books but this time she bares her emotional side after tragedy strikes. She is struggling to find herself again and finds her strength through Fletch and his unyielding patience and support.

I love this entire series but this one stands out as being a favorite. Might be because of the characters from previous books making appearances, how the stories build on each other or just the fact that Muddy Gap grows on you. It can be read alone but I would suggest reading the entire series. But caution- this is steamy and doesn't leave out any details!

He and Tanna spend one night together. Will they get back together for a relationship that is more than a one night stand?

Rating: C ... Heat: Sizzling

Former barrel racing champion Tanna Barker is looking for a fresh start. After a bad accident on her horse, Tanna is afraid to get back on the saddle. Tanna's afraid of a lot of things really--horses, men, relationships, her former life in Texas. So she's packed up and is temporarily moving to Wyoming to work at the Split Rock, a resort that's owned by one of her friend's husband. And what does Miss Tanna do her first night in town? She hooks up with a random (and totally sexy) stranger she meets at a bar. Once her wild night of fun is over, Tanna does what she usually does--splits--expecting to never see her handsome hookup again.

A few days later, however, there he is. August Fletcher, an overworked veterinarian who also happens to be one sweet talker. Even though he many not have a lot of suave moves, he gets you with his honesty and directness. He says what he means and then acts on it accordingly. But falling for Fletch, who never has a day off and might be the hardest working man in Wyoming, isn't something Tanna wants to do. Too bad Fletch is resilient and stubborn. Even more so than our super stubborn heroine.

These two have, oddly enough given their initial hookup, a very slow build. Tanna takes a lot of convincing. Nearly one third of the book goes by and she wouldn't even agree to a date. I never really understood the hold up on her part and it really bogged things down. Once she finally relents and Fletch gets a long and much need sabbatical from his practice, well, that's when things heat up. And up and up.

James is known for writing a certain kind of rough and gruff and dominant hero and Fletch is no exception. He's quite the beast in bed. And since he has to handle large stock seven days a week, he's also really well built. Plus there's the fact that he a true gentleman on top of all that? Heck yeah I'd want to lick him from his neck to his... you know... too.

Which is why I just did not get Tanna at all. There are a lot of things I liked about her, don't get me wrong--she's sassy and smart and she's got quite the mouth on her--but I simply did not like her. She pussyfooted around forever. She refused to show almost any real emotions without sarcasm. There were other small things that annoyed me but, as a whole, Tanna and I simply didn't gel. Which is unusual, as I have loved every other heroine Miz James has written, but it happens.

Turn and Burn starts out white hot and, though it slows down for a period, only manages to get even hotter. August Fletcher is the heart of this book for me, with his straightforward methods of seduction. For a man who doesn't have a lot of free time, he knows how to make the most of his nights off. I wish I had grown to love Tanna too but it just didn't happen. Still, if you're in the mood for sexy cowboys who get down and dirty on the job and off--no one beats a Lorelei James hero!

You better tighten that cinch, because you are in for one helluva wild ride! Fletch and Tanna blast any and all barriers to be one of the sexiest couples you will come across any time soon. They love with abandon, even when they have yet to recognize it as such, but it is their absolute candidness with each other that is so fantastic. There is no doubt in my mind that anything Ms. James puts her mind to will be worth reading, especially when it involves the hottest cowboys and girls you are likely to find.

I loved that these characters were older and more secure in what they wanted from life. The sex as always in a Lorelei James book was smoking off the charts. I wasn't thrilled with the term "Sugar Twang" but given their start it could have been worse. This is the fifth in the series but can be read stand-alone. I recommend reading the others first so you can understand who the heck these folks are and why they would help Tanna out the way they do. If you are looking for adult loving cowboy style - you need to read Lorelei James.

The book is everything a reader wants for Tanna and more. Following the career of this world champion barrel racer over the last 5 books, I think most of us thought she would end up the wife of a country crooner...boy were we wrong.

Fletch is everything you want in a man for strong willed Tanna. He is handsome and committed to his job and the kicker, he's a vet. Thus, his commitment to animals is extra appealing.

What I love about the BTC series is how real all the characters seem. People are flawed and hurt and struggling. All the while they are trying to love and be loved. This is the perfect story for those who may have found themselves on different life paths than they expected.

You also catch up with your other favorite characters from this series and see how everyone is doing in Muddy Gap.

Its a must read for any romance, rodeo or LJ fan.

I love the way James write these sexy western romances. Her characters have heart and soul. The dialogue is sassy and funny. Even the minor characters are interesting, plus makes me wonder whose story is next. This is my third blacktop novel and I can't wait until my next one . The cover summary is true, so I won't repeat it. Suffice it to say that love is worth taking a risk and getting out of your comfort zone. Another great love story.

I enjoy the people that populate Ms James book's. They have lived hard and had their difficulties. They have problems that are believable. I look for the other books in the series to see how they have faired.

I'm amazed there aren't more bad reviews, however not amazed there are so many good ones. The writing wasn't bad, but the content was too much for me. This book has the main character cussing on nearly every page. She is basically a slut who was injured in a barrel racing accident, turned her life around, but still loves to talk about how great the good old days of threesomes and anal sex were and how she would love to still be barrel racing and doing all the after hour activities. She is so "tough" in life, but she can't get over an accident that lost her her barrel racing mare and is so damaged that she can't even look at a horse again without literally running away. Really that part isn't what I disliked so much about it, but it didn't seem to fit her character at all. I couldn't finish it. I got it as an Audible book, luckily I was able to return it! When they got to the anal sex I just couldn't take any more of it. I really liked the idea of the story, a large animal vet and a horse girl, but it was terrible.

Lorelei James has done it again a great book that contains both a captivating story and some steamy sex.
This is the 5th book in the series and I think the best. It goes from a one night stand to telling the story of 2 people coming together and helping each other find what's been missing. Since this series is about a town it also provide updates on characters from other books which I really liked.
