For my daughter's monster themed birthday party, I purchased this book for guest sign-ins. Not only will she have a charming momento from her first birthday but also a charming book. The story is quite nice (party monsters making a mess then doing something really nice in the end) and the art is off-beat, attractive and memorable. I also purchased this for my nephew's first birthday. Big hit.

We enjoy this book and read it frequently, but it is not one of our favorite Boynton books. Our favorites are: Not the Hippopotamus, The Belly Button Book, Barnyard Dance, and Your Personal Penguin. Our daughter is too young to be scared of this book, but I think it could be scary with the monsters who come and steal your cake and presents.

Another Boynton fun book. A great 'read to me' book and also good for early readers. I left it on my grandson's night stand so he would have it when he woke up on his 5th birthday. The story has 5 birthday monsters so it was perfect.

If you like Boynton's books, you'll probably like this one too. My son is more of a fan of her "Opposites" or "But Not the Hippopotamus". It's OK, as far as children's books go, but Boynton has done better.

Sandra Boynton brings us yet another snappy, silly book of hilarity for preschoolers. This is a fantasy about waking up on your birthday and finding that a group of cheerful monsters have arrived to give a party. They do all the things that bad party guests do: Arrive too early, give self-serving gifts, cheat at games, eat up the cake, and make a big mess. But it's all in fun: they return to tidy the mess and replace the gifts and cake.
Preschoolers will love the rhythmic, crisp way this story is told, and will really enjoy the over-the-top bad example of these birthday monsters. And it's actually funny enough that you might not be tempted to hide it on a high shelf after a few dozen readings.

My daughter received a copy of Birthday Monsters from a dear friend of mine for her first birthday. For every family member's birthday, at bed time we will read this book.
My daughter will soon turn 19 years old - and we already have an "appointment" for 9:00 on her birthday to Skype (she's several hundred miles from home at college). It is a cute story, with a nice rhyme and rhythm, the pictures are great, and it never ceases to amuse us. We still act silly and read it with a ridiculous amount of sound effects and "feeling".
It has become a tradition we hope we have passed on to friends and family, by making a copy of Birthday Monsters a part of our gift for their kids' first birthdays.

My daughter received this as a first birthday gift and we love it! It's fun, colorful, and silly. She is just starting to be interested in books more (maybe my mantra "books are for reading, not for eating" is finally sinking in) and definitely enjoys this one. It'll be a great tradition to read on her birthday every year.

This is one of our favorite books.
The chaos caused by the monsters (more sensitive kids might get upset, I suppose, but my nieces don't) is done in a funny way, and the fact that the BIRTHDAY MONSTER CLEANING CREW! fixes everything at the end makes it all better.
Very catchy text, really funny illustrations. Perfect for a kid's first or second birthday.

My daughter thought this book was funny but at the end she was wanting me to ensure her that no monsters were going to come on her birthday and eat all her cake, and open her presents! But after explaining to her about these books being for fun and pretend she has really grown to love this book and telling people that there really are not any birthday monsters.

Perhaps it should be, "Shame on me," for trying to figure out a book for children. It may be the English teacher in me. I can't for the life of me, however, figure out what this book even means!
My wife and I read it together to our soon-to-be-born baby and laughed hysterically and then it was over and we simultaneously said, "Wait...what?" We chuckled some more, but mostly because we couldn't figure out how the book had just ended.
Is it a dream? Is it a second birthday party? Where are this hippo's parents?
Despite our utter lack of clarity, we both thoroughly enjoyed the book, and will read it again very soon, I'm sure.

I bought this book for my daughter's first birthday recently. We both love it! The first time I read it I couldn't help laughing at the story. The illustrations are so eye catching and colorful. I would recommend this book if you have a birthday party coming up for almost any age!

I pretty much love anything by Sandra Boynton. We bought this book for my 2 year old's birthday. We used it to center her party around--a monster themed birthday. She loves this book now and asks us to read it to her almost everyday.

We are huge Boynton fans. My son received this and "Happy Birthday Little Pookie!" for his third birthday. He much prefers "Happy Birthday Little Pookie" as do I. "Monsters" is not as sweet and he has become concerned about whether the Monsters will come to our house.

I bought this book for my daughter's 2nd birthday and she absolutely loves it. She can "read" the book word-for-word as I turn the pages because we've read it so often!! Sandra Boynton is a fantastic author. We have a bunch of her books and they are definitely my daughter's favorites (and mine too).
