Della thinks she sees her dead cousin run into an alley. Rather than run the other way, she investigates. What investigation ever had a good ending that began with the sighting of a supposedly dead relative running into a dark alley? Exactly. Now Della has big problems.
I liked this short story. It was a fresh take on the genre. I liked the inner turmoil of Della's character. Finally someone who doesn't see the glamour of vampires. There was a lot of character development packed into this short story without it being overwhelming. I felt I really got to know Della and I cared what happened to her.
The author's style is easy to get lost in and just enjoy the story. I recommend this short story and will be looking for more from this author and what happens next for Della.

This novella took us along for a ride with Della, a normal teenager, who is happy at home, has friends, and a boyfriend she is crazy about. All until one night she thinks she sees the ghost of her cousin. She ends up in the middle of a gang fight and from there life gets really strange. She finds out that her cousin isn't dead, but a vampire and that he has activated the vampire virus in her, after a very sick few days she wakes up and starts to learn about the new Della, while trying to figure everything out she finds the phone number for Camp Shadow Falls. That is where we leave Della. This was a cool short story, Della is pretty cool, and the whole take on vampires seems just different enough to be a fresh take on the subject. When I finished this I quickly jumped into Born at Midnight, and while this didn't feel like a required read to understand Born at Midnight I am glad I read it first. I give this novella 4 stars!

This is a very short novella about Della Tsang, a main character from Born at Midnight, but takes place before that and shows us how she came to be what she is in Born at Midnight. St. Martin's Griffin gave this away as a free e-book on the same day that Born at Midnight was released.
Turned at Dark was a very quick and interesting read, and I recommend it to anyone who has read and enjoyed Born at Midnight. It gives us more insight into Della as a character, and the reasons why she acted the way she did in BaM. We also get more insight into her cousin Chan, who made a brief appearance in BaM. I liked him very much, and I hope he makes a bigger appearance in the rest of the series.
In this short story, we get to see how her life was before she was turned, how she interacted with her family and the pressures put on her by her father to be perfect. And then we see her transformation into a vampire, which also gave us some first hand insight into how it works to be turned into one, in case anyone was confused from the description in Born at Midnight.
Overall, it was a good little story. Anyone who wants a little more of the Shadow Falls world before Awake at Dawn comes out, this is the perfect thing for you.
