I liked this better than the first Dexter book. I thought the series jumped the shark by marrying off Dexter at the end of the season, but the book shows why exactly he did it... and it wasn't because Rita was pregnant. The constant imposition upon him by other characters got on my nerves, though. I find it interesting that he has the capability to be such a pansy even though he's a serial killer. This trait is portrayed accurately in the series.

After pushing through the first book I decided maybe the series will improve. In some ways it did. Dexter's got issues with one cop harassing him daily and a new serial killer (it's not exactly a killer is it?) who does the most unusual things to his victims. Huh, maybe the series had become good?
Thirty pages into the book I knew a few things. The characters are still cardboard. One could say this is a result of "Dexter" writing and seeing people as simple but alas even Dexter isn't interesting. The dialog's horrendously awful: lots of exposition, gobs of bland exchanges and nothing that hints at Dexter or anyone in Miami might be smart. And finally, the story builds and then crashes on itself so you're left with a really vanilla finale. Seriously, the book's climax seems to arrive 30 pages earlier than the actual end of the book but in the end there really isn't a climax...it just ends like a TJ Hooker episode.
How could these books have spawned something as deliciously smart and savvy as Showtime's series?

Love Jeff Lindsay! He's my new favorite...used to be David Wiltse & Thomas Harris...no more! But try David Wiltse if you haven't - I recommend starting with Close to the Bone :) Dexter books are a very quick read, but that's okay...with this being a new show on Showtime I'm sure he's gonna be cranking these out @ warp speed, but the quality will not suffer, no doubt. Like Wiltse he's one of those authors that grab you with the first paragraph and you can't put it down until your finished! AAAAA+++++

In this, the second book about Dexter Morgan by Jeff Lindsay, the character of Dexter deffinately delivers. It keeps you excited and wanting more. The book was good. I was disappointed with a slightly weak ending and without giving anything away, slightly disapponted at not being taken to the last kill. It was good all the way through, just seemed like he was in a hurry to meet a deadline at the end. If you like Dexter you will like this chapter of the story too.

Remember this first TV series was based on this book but many parts of the plot deviate from the TV series. A true Dexter fan will want to read the books. The TV series has so much more detail and is a much richer experience than a book.

Enjoying books about a serial killer? That's what reading Mr. Lindsay's books about Dexter is like. I like reading of Dexter's thoughts and with the addition of a love interest with children, his life is getting more involved. I see where a cable pay-channel that we do not receive has done a series on Dexter, and I hope it comes to a regular cable channel soon.

I understand a second season of Dexter the series is in the works so I decided I would read this second Dexter book written by Jeff Lindsay. If this book is any sign of how good the second season of Dexter will be then hold on Dexter watchers, we're in for yet another great season. Another great book!
