I've read many similar books of child abuse but have never written a review for one. This is a heart wrenching story and will leave you in tears. I couldn't get enough of this book in the sense that I truly started loving David and Dennis and prayed for their safety.

I don't know if there was something wrong with my copy of this e-book, but it abruptly ended after just a few chapters. Nothing was resolved, the e-book just ended, so this was not really a story. I see others have given the book good reviews, but they must have had a complete copy of the story, where mine was very incomplete.

The abuse of this monster stepfather and the utter neglect of a stupid helpless mother who let this continue is beyond reason. I could not finish this book. Too much violence, hurt children, murdered animals, and society that failed. I am in disbelief this co u of go on in a civilized society.

there was poor editing for the kindle fire version. that's the main reason for only three stars. the story itself is disturbing to say the least. the pure torture of these kids is unimaginable. I wonder if it was just so common in that generation to turn a blind eye. unspeakable abuse in this story. I would love to meet the surviving children in this family. what courage it must've taken to write this story.

I never read novels , they are not the kind of read that I like. And I like my true stories to feel that it's real. Even though the story could have been interesting , I had a hard time finishing it. How did this author know every thought and conversation these people had years ago. PURE SPECULATION. If something is true just tell the facts. Don't make stuff up.

All the things in this book cannot be factual, there are too many coinsidences! Things seem to happen at just the right time and in just the right sequence to make believeable. Someone spent a lot of time thinking these things up

A title can make or break a book. This book was made all the more powerful by its title. "Where Children Run" yet these children had nowhere to run and no one who cared. Their story is one that is so commonplace in modern times that the abuse they suffered only shocked me in that I didn't know such things happened a half century ago or that a White church going family has the same issues stereotyped to minorities. A woman who can't live without a man in her life though that man hates her children. It is more important to be in a relationship than to save her children. Shameful. Though these little boys survived their ordeal and received no justice if anyone had ever bothered to step in and throw that PSYCHO stepfather in jail their mother should have been tossed in right along side him! A man is NOT a plan! How they found the strength to forgive for all they went through while she stood idley by is mindblowing, because she was certainly no kind of mother to let this madness go on under her OWN roof!

This book brought up a lot of repressed memories as well as ones that were never forgot in my life. I was one of the lucky one...I finally spoke to my mom about what my step mother was doing to my older sister and me after only 3 years. My mom remarried when I was 10 and I was blessed with a step father who loved us as if we were his own. They moved us to a far away state when I was 12. I missed my daddy but the fear and abuse was at an end. I raise 2 sons, mostly on my own but NEVER EVER allowed any man in my life to correct my children. I also made a vow that I would break the cycle and I'm proud to say I really did it.
It takes great courage to write a book like this one. I honor both these men greatly for there ability to go through such a horrific childhood, share their story, help other family's n children with awareness and break the cycle of abuse. The statistics are not in favor of that outcome at all. I'm so glad that they found loving family's in the end.

This book made me so mad at times. For a grown man to do things and then when confronted to turn around and blame his twin sons was upsetting to me. Everyone, including the police believed the step-father. This true story starts in 1953 after Bill Pischke dies, leaving the mother of 7 children to run the farm. She ends up getting pregnant and having a baby (Kathy) with a farmhand, (Domko). Domko moves in and takes over the household and nearly kills the baby in a rage one day, throwing her against the wall because she wouldn't stop crying. Yes, this is so very hard to read when the mother is too afraid to take the baby to a doctor.
The story seems to focus largely on the mistreatment of the twin boys, David and Dennis, although all of the Pischke children were not only starved, but beaten in the most horrific ways on a daily basis. Were it not for the kindness of their various neighbors, they would have all starved to death. Attempts to get the law involved always backfired and the kids paid for it dearly. Poor little Rosie seemed to get the worst treatment and was beaten most severely by the step-father. This horrific book kept me glued to the pages and I also ordered the sequel that is a follow up to the twins (When Memories Run) that I can't wait to read.

After reading this book, which is very well written. I am MAD it's the MOTHERS FAULT ! A Mother should put her children's needs before her own. I don't care if her 1st husband died. She had options other than Marriage to a cruel MENTAL, SICK, SCHIZOPHRENIC ! She knew what kind of man he was before she married him. Thank God these children were protected by GOD and GOOD Neighbors. God was watching out for them. A Normal Mother let's her children eat before she eat's, so she ( the mother ) had to have some kind of MENTAL ILLNESS HERSELF. Never re-Marry if you have plenty of children, especially if your 1st husband was in the Military ~ you and your children get checks and benefit's. Their Mother Was Stupid !! I just finished this book and writing this review at 1:30 AM

One could hope, as you are reading this, it's a work of fiction. Sadly it's not. The stepfather is ruined early in life and loves inflicting pain on others, and on his animals. The mother I refuse to find any excuse for except she chose a brutal msn over her children. I suppose one could make excuses for her, however I won't. They both deserve a front row seat in hell. And what is even more painful is knowing there are children out there now in the same situation. Perhaps this should be required reading for social workers and those in law enforcement. And judges who send children back into these environments. Last but not least, an eye opener on the Jehovah Witness religion. A very worthwhile read.

The children survived horrible beatings, starvation, adults who stood by and offered no help, winter nights sleeping out in the cold, and grew into decent people.

Their survival came at a cost: nightmares, people who didn’t believe they were abused, and fear they would hurt their own children.

If you grew up in a happy family, you need to read this book so you will know how lucky you are.

If you grew up in an abusive family, you need to read this book so you will learn you are not alone.

I've read many stories of child abuse throughout my life and never fail to marvel at the resiliency of children who were beaten do severely. Now that I'm sure grandparent it helps me to keep a keen eye on my grandchildren to ensure there are no secrets, no fears of abuses. I am their advocate just as I was for my own children. One thing I have to disagree with in this story is the blaming of the Jehovah witnesses religion. The mother chose to stay with a msn who brutality tortured and bullied those kids. She chose not to tell the members she was friends with the truth of what was really happening in the home choosing to blame the boys especially of being unruly and taking some of the blame in feeling sorry for herself which is why the members tended to side with the stepfather. We must also take into consideration the era in which people accepted or turned away from severe abuse especially in rural areas. I resent the mothers use of using Jehovah's name while allowing these heinous acts to continue. Had she been truthful, and yes I do understand the cycle of abuse and it's victimization of family, she and the children would have been better supported. She was not a true practicing Jehovah witness by any means and by her own choices have the congregation a bag name. From the eyes of children it too appeared as though the witnesses knew and did not care. Today we are more educated about domestic abuse it wasn't so back then. That's why the authorities did very little. It was the era of children must be seen and not heard.

This is a truly sad story of abuse within the confines of the family home. The story centers mainly on the twin brothers, David and Dennis, who seemed to catch the wrath of their step-father more than any of the other siblings. It's hard to understand how a woman could stand by and watch her own children be abused in such a way, yet we know it happens. The only fault I have with this ebook, is there were no pictures or updates as stated in book description. Also, the book ends when they are teens, finally living on their own. There is a second book which continues the story, which I have not found in the ebook format.
I googled David's name and found an interesting 16 minute documentary on YouTube featuring both David and Dennis as adults walking the viewer through their old homestead and speaking of theirs lives both as children and adults. Sadly, I also found David's obituary, he passed away in 2004. How these men were able to live through their abuse is beyond me. Truly heart-breaking.

I am amazed any of the Pischke children survived, especially the twins and Rosie! As a mother, I am flabbergasted as to how Caroline could let anyone treat her children that way! As far as her being abused as well, in my opinion, after a while it was her choice to let it continue happening, she could have stayed gone. Their community let the family down horribly and those who turned a blind eye should be ashamed. Without the neighbors that took in the children and tried to help those children would not have survived. The Pischke children showed an extreme amount of perseverance and will to live, I truly hope their adult lives rewarded them form it!

This was a story of a sad childhood of poverty made exponentially worse by severe abuse. I felt physically ill at several points in this book especially with the detailed descriptions of the animal cruelty. Unfortunately for these children many turned a blind eye and even their own mother chose to accept the abuse rather than do whatever necessary to escape. Personally I cannot comprehend that choice but it was a different world for women back then. I am relieved that the twins were able to finally be free and live the normal lives they always deserved.

I’m completely speechless!!!! Thank you for sharing your lives and baring your souls. I don’t think I’ve ever interacted with a book so much, getting so upset when no one would help them!!!! Sad thing is I still read these kinds of stories today!!! When is our society going to put an end to this type of behavior????!!!!! Great book , very well written!! I’m just truly sorry it had to be written!!!

This is probably the most haunting story I have ever read! There were times I had to quickly shut the book and close my eyes and have a good cry at the trauma that these poor children endured. This is a book of horror, and though it is so difficult to read - it is important to know what this family went through. You will feel a range of emotions as you read it - anger, sadness, fear, rage. I really struggled with Caroline throughout this story. My hatred intensified for her throughout the book, and never once did I feel bad for her. I hope she is in hell right now with Domko. I have no admiration for the Jehovah Witness religion whatsoever.

Have you ever wanted to reach into a book and punch someone? This is how I felt reading this book. How could a mother let this happen? No matter how bad her life was she should have never let the abuse happen. She made her bed, she should lie in it. He hated the 1st husbands kids so much she should have given them up. There is no excuse for this mother's actions. I honestly believe she enjoyed seeing her kids abused.

Amazing and miraculous story of survival , it's so sad to read what these children went thru , heartbreaking that social services never rescue them from such brutal abuse of their crazy step father , it's miraculous that any of them made it out alive to tell their stories and they all are survived and went on to live happy life's without fear and abuse however sad that the twins and probably the other children had nightmares of that monster long after it ended. Thanks for having the courage to share your story , God bless you and all that have suffered thru abuse , I pray that anyone going thru abuse finds the strength and courage to to make the call to police or turn to someone to help them escaped. Nobody deserves to be abused in any way shape or form , I have lived through it , not as a child but in my adult life and will never live through that again and will help anyone in need of escape even if it's just to break the silence and make that call so they can receive the help they need.

Excellent Read! David and Dennis Pischke survived violent abuse that is unheard of in this day. I read the book cover to cover in disbelief, shock and amazement at the treatment of the boys and their siblings at the hands of a man who could only be described as a monster. Through it all, the love for eachother and the kindness from a few individuals is proof of the depth and endurance of the human spirit. Emilson draws the reader into the story where the reader feels the emotions, hunger and the Manitoba cold as David and Dennis felt it. Also, by Karen Emilson, "When Memories Remain" is the poignant follow up of David and Dennis as adults, trying to live normal lives with the emotional, psychological and physical scarring from their childhood. Trying to answer the question "Why?". Reading the set back to back is an absolute must.

I couldn't put it down. I spent New Years Eve and New Years day reading this book. Unfortunately as a former law enforcement officer I've known kids like David and Dennis. This book is an eye opener for people to stop and think when a kid seems different, to have the courage to ask why, find out what's going on . If you suspect abuse in heaven's name report it and followup so it doesn't get swept under the rug. The human spirit is amazing. The survival instinct is as old as man. Not everyone has the courage to survive. These kids did. God bless all of them.

I have heard of The Pischke Twins before but I had NO idea what there story was until I read this book. There are no words to describe what this family suffered at the hands of a physopath. It is indeed a complete Miracle they survived. I could not stop reading this book until I finished. The twins story has affected me like no other book I have ever read. This book will stay with me long after the last page read.

I flew through reading this book as if I were watching a movie. The sheer strength of David and Dennis had inspired me. As for "Satan" after all he did he couldn't suffer enough in my eyes, but he got his in the end. My thanks to author for telling this story in hopes that others can gleen from this the truths of children of abuse in a system with blinders on.

David and Dennis were 6 year old twins when their father died leaving their mother who had little education ripe for the first man who said something nice to her to move on in.

The story is told from many viewpoints, but mainly the twins who seemed to get the brunt of the starvation and beatings.

This isn't an easy story to read.

There are no happy endings.

We fail to protect when we can clearly see what is happening. And that is what I believe this story embodies, believe your gut feeling.

This true story of horrific abuse leaves me wondering how did they survive? Why any parent would ever allow such torture of their children is mind boggling. David & Dennis abused so horrifically that they were losing all hope. As events began to unfold, to release them from the clutches of death, that could only be the grace of God. I’m amazed that anyone surviving this torture could ever have successful lives. Thank you for telling your story. I am so much more aware that this type of abuse is not isolated. I will not soon forget the courage of these children or of the heroes who tried to help them while the system failed over & over.

all i will say is i can relate to the story. i am a jw and though i understand the feeling the twins feelings towards the religion. at the same time if the mother was truly practicing the faith she would never had hooked up with that creep to begin with and there isn't enough proff to show that the jw's really understood what was really going on with the family.

It is a very well written book full of suffering yet couldn't put the book down. I wanted to know that the boys were fine, it also reminded me that God meant for us to help children and not necessarily to claim we belong to a hypocritical churchgoers. Your heart tells you when your right or wrong not a group of hypocrites. I now dislike Nevis witnesses and will not hesitate to show it.

The book was one of the best books I have read. I cried, I laughed, I felt every emotion you could possibly feel reading a story of horrific abuse. I have never read such a horrible story of two young boys and surviving such a devastating life. It show what a horrible disease bipolar is when not treated. This man actually got enjoyment severely abusing children and murdering family pets. I was so thankful they survived and doing well, I won't say good because they are forever scared mentally and physically.

This book is a testimony to the fearsome willpower of these twins and siblings. How these children survived their childhood is an honest to God miracle. The mother was almost as much to blame as the horrific stepfather. The story telling is honestly written and simply heart wrenching.

This book was outstanding. To realize that all of this is true and the children had to endure such pain and humility through their childhood is so sad. To find out that they actually made it through these these years is amazing. We all know that these terrible things go in certain families and it is so tragic and sad to think about. This was a very emotional true story and a "must" read for everyone.

This book kept me reading. The stories were written well and was told in a way where one can really feel the emotions of the twins. While I do want to throw in an animal cruelty warning, I do recommend this book to anyone who wants an inside look on the horrors and frustrations of children in abusive situations and why it's hard for them to get out.

I couldn't put this down, I was so wrapped up in what was going to happen to these kids and if their mother would keep taking the step father back. I was left at the end wanting to know more detail about why the kids couldn't go back to the home they ran away too and why their neighbor Ruby moved away. I would have liked more info on the other siblings after they moved away too. It wasn't the best writing and was very repetitive in a lot of parts but the story was interesting.

What a page-turner! I am absolutely in awe of these children. Nowadays we have college kids needing "safe spaces" over what someone wrote on the sidewalk and an election. Contrast that with being beaten, kicked, starved, and belittled....I just don't have the words right now to write an extended, thoughtful review. I'm humbled.

This book was an excellent read, but very disturbing. I was so angry at the mom in the situation because she let this man practically kill her children. Her only concern was keeping a man despite the utter suffering of her family.

This book broke my heart. What those children went through should have never happened. Why didnt someone step up and help them. If the step father was mentally ill ( and I believe he was ) then he should have been sent away long before he was. The church can kiss my grits. They should be ashamed of themselves. I have a feeling that my God will not be pleased with them. I hope the best for those that survived that evil man. Much love

This book brought memories of my own life of survival to life again. I too had a Father that would beat me over anything or locked me away behind a bed that folded up in the wall if he wanted to abuse my little Sister. My space of about 8 ins. by 6 ft. would be where I would pray and also where I started to hear the voices that haunted me for about 6 years until one day I prayed and prayed for them to go away. God did hear me and helped me come through a lot of rough years. This book took courage to write I'm sure. I've always wanted to write my own but it's hard to bring all that back to life again. Maybe some day. Please read this book and help any child you see that looks like they need help.

It is difficult to read this book knowing that the events described really happened and were brought about by one sick and depraved individual. It is equally a misfortune that the children suffered so severely day after day after year after decade. So many times I told myself I just couldn't read anymore but that would be so unfair to the memory of these two boys who endured this hell and brought it to our attention. And so I continued to read and I cried and was sickened by the treatment of their poor animals and pets that died only because they brought happiness to these children.

I was so relieved to read about the lives of this family after living thru this hell. Knowing David and Dennis went on to live a good life in spite of their hardships lifted my spirits, and I thanked God their strength remained to carry on. May God be with you always and I'm sorry you ever had to live like this but you lived to save others I'm sure because of this book and your story. R.I.P. David and thank you both.

an incredibly sad story that made me so sad yet mad and hopeful that these poor children had to endure all that they went through at the hands of "Satan"but yet managed to survive through it all! I believe it was thier deceased father that watched over them and willed them to survive. In the end Satan was dealt with accordingly and its sad to say that children today still suffer the same with others that abuse them like this and much worse that some dont survive at all because of those who turn their heads to this when its obvious. My heart and prayers go out to this family and other children who suffer the same and just pray that GOD is with you and that that the angels HE sends your way (neighbors, family, friends, authorities, teachers, etc,) do the right thing and step in to save these children so one less story like this has to be told or reported.

The book was gut wrenching. Having to endure the pain and suffering these poor children went through. I admire them for how their lives turn out not as children today blame their parents for how they turn out. They took the initiative to make a better life for themselves. Just a shame the had to wait so long to do it!

Read this book straight through. This story should be required reading but I can't decide where it should be assigned. Horrible things happened to these children and to know that abuse of women and children is still common place is heart breaking.
I am so happy that most of them have had a life that in no way resembles their cursed childhood.
As each child left home never to return, I rejoiced.

A must read book. Be prepared to burn the midnight oil!!!

Even tho this book was heart wrenching from beginning to end it is a much needed read for awareness of the terrible things that many children go thru on a daily basis, even in this current time. Anyone whom looks the other way when they see these things should be ashamed of themselves. As far as the Jehovah's Witness religion, this is proof that they are nothing more than a cult, just as I have thought for so many years! Shame on them!
Disturbing as it was this book was written very well!

One of the worst child abuse cases I have ever read. Dennis and David are true heroes.
The pain they both endured must have been excruciating. My heart goes out to all the family.
How they all made it out alive is a miracle.

After reading this I looked up where the children run on youtube and found them. If you get a chance check it out.

I just finished this book .. my heart broke so many times while reading this book .. I wanted to reach in somehow and cradle the young boys so badly .. I don't know how these boys lived to tell their story .. but I am so glad they did .. By the end of the book I hated their step father just as much as they did .. I am not surprised that the folks from Kingdom Hall did nothing to help them and they did make it worse for them at times .. I don't in anyway understand why their mother let that man treat her and her first husband's children so badly .. She let her family down also .. I know she was abused too , but when he threw the baby against the wall , that would have been it for me .. no more after that .. and the child was blinded by that .. and it was his and hers child .. He forgot that until it was too late .. I have just downloaded the book after this " When Memories Remain " .. that tells the story about the twins when they finally left the farm .. I can't wait to start reading it .

This was a hard book to read because of the brutality but it was ultimately uplifting because of the perseverance of the children who were systematically victimized & neglected by two parents who were certainly unfit.

I loved the epilogue & catching up with the many characters in the book.

There are many villains in this book although there are also many heroes who did as much as they could under the circumstances to help the children.

This is one book that you will never forget.

This is an extremely depressing book filled with terrible violence against women, children and animals. I think that you could call it a survival story although those are usually somewhat inspirational and I didn't find this book inspirational at all. Just exhausting. No one who deserved punishment or prosecution got it. It is a page-turner at times but I also found myself thinking that there is no way someone could be this violent and evil. That being said, if you like dark stories that are based on real life events, you may like this book.

This book wasn't written in a way that makes you cry the whole time. It was written in a very matter-of-fact style. I had difficulty putting it down. Very good read. I will say there I'd one character I hated more than the primary protagonist. You will figure it out if you read the book.

I wrote my Sr term paper on child abuse and cried several times during my research. Reading this was hard and once again reminded me of the atrocities that some adults put poor children through and the amount of people that turn their heads instead of helping the poor children is staggering. Everyone needs to get involved and put an end to this!

How these children survived is nothing short of a miracle. I've never been a fan of organiZed religion and this book further verifies those feelings. A look at child abuse through a child's eyes. The mother in this book is just as guilty, if not more, then the step dad. Great book!

This is a phenomenal book!! I will admit that I do not read a lot, (well pretty much never) but this was the only book I have read cover to cover and to a surprise more than once! I enjoyed the thrilling events, from surviving in the utmost brutal conditions to the true love of siblings. This book will take you through a world wind of emotions; to hate, love, compassion, and well being. This is a true page turner and you will not be able to set it down! I know I didn't! After I was done reading Where Children Run, I gained a new perspective for my family, friends, and especially for my sisters! We may have out fights, but when it comes down to it, we will always be there to support each other through thick and thin. Karen Emilson has captured this emotion throughout the entire book. It is truly a must read!!! Enjoy everyone!!!!

Thankful that God watched over this family. So hard to believe this treatment they went thru and that a mother could let her kids go hungry. Such a crime and to think it goes on today, probably under our nose.Thankful they got away and had a better life in their adult age.

This is a heartbreaking story of courage and strength....also of evil. I wish I had been around to help not only Dennis & David but all these poor children.....I personally have no sympathy for their mother. Can't wait to read the other story about the twins.....

It is stories like these that must be told over and over. The violence and abuse told about here continues to happen to this day in all manner of households. It is through others telling their stories (like this one) that will help break the cycle hopefully with more people not just providing lip service, but stepping in.

Great book, but in the end, I don't feel she accounted for the remaining years of all of the siblings as you would expect! One sister was mentioned as being buried, but never explained how her life went :( But once you pick this book up and start reading, you can't put it down!

I loved this book. It drew me into the lives of this family. There were times when my heart was ripped from my chest and I wanted to wrap my arms around these children and offer my help. I could sincerely put myself in the scene. My heart goes out to this family..

This story is very sad, and very true. The abuse these children suffered are hard to believe, and remarkable that they lived. I think their Mother should be held accountable for what she didn't do to care for them as well.

So much details! I could picture all the children and their exact features, voices to their hiding spots. The only thing that was difficult was to imagine Domkos voice as he was trying to speak English.

The strength and perseverance of these children who had no parent to love, protect or nurture them is unbelievable! If only we were all so strong! Difficult to get through at times, but an inspiring read.

I think highly of this book, how the storyteller hooked me into the plot and just kept me on my toes asking can the kid's situation get any worse? I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a novel that will literally lead you to the next page.

This book goes to the heart and the will to live. The fact that these kids lived to tell their childhood is amazing. Also, it shows how far mental health and child abuse has come into the public light.
