The characters were so real. Being a West Virginia gal, it was as though I knew her and she was my best friend. Very well written in the sense that it is not predictable nor are events so far fetched that would make you say "Yeah right".

This book portrays the life of a 19th century girl/woman May Rose, struggling to survive in a remote West Virginia town. The colorful and sometimes deviant characters who are part of this town's fabric are influential in how she grows and becomes self sufficient without losing her self respect and hope. May Rose matures into a tough, sensitive and independent woman, traits which characterized many women of this period. The end of the book felt a bit unfinished but leaves the door open for further updates of the characters and historical events which formed our nation. Recommend as a fictional story, beach read.

I really enjoyed reading this book and its ending. It makes you understand how hard it was for a woman back in the "old" days and what they had to endure and overcome. I would definitely recommend this book to others.
