Excellent spice and herb resource book! I use it frequently as a guide to understanding and/or using various dry spices and experimenting with fresh herbs. This book, alone, has helped bring about variety and more savory meals to our weekly repertoire.

This book is a treasure trove of information for anyone who is interested in incorporating the use of spices and herbs into more of his or her cooking. It gives excellent, clear, detailed descriptions of many spices from caraway to vanilla. It also does the same for herbs from arugula to mint and blends of both like berbere. In addition to all of this, it gives a concise history of how both spices and herbs have been used in different cultures, offers a guide of which spices and herbs might be more applicable to the reader based on his or her food preferences and even how one can grow his or her own herbs at home. Finally, the book gives a brief insight as to how certain spices like garlic are helpful in treating particular medical conditions, but cautions the advice of a physician when employing them as a method of treatment. So, if you are interested in utilizing spices and herbs with greater frequency in your meals, this book is a perfect fit for you.

Very informative book. I found a bevy of information I didn't know about spices and herbs. For example, I didn't realize that I was confusing some spices with herbs and visa-versa. I think it has really stepped up what little cooking game I have.

It also provides what health benefits each spice and herb has, which I found very helpful to figure out what I should use for any health issue I have.

The recipes looked good and I'm looking forward to trying some of them!

I really don't see disabled people having an issue with this book.

For someone who is used to cooking the same foods over and over again, this book is quite mind blowing. I didn't even know about half of the herbs and spices mentioned in this book. It sure opened up my eyes to new recipes and amazing tastes with some of the spices that are in my local neighborhood store that I never knew about. Like did you know that Basil has healing powers ? Basil has been known to ease anxiety and constipation...yeah that astounded me because I sure as heck didn't know that!! Essential Spices and Herbs has many wonderful recipes and you will also find out their healing powers and what herbs and spices compliment other herbs and spices. I highly recommend reading this book and trying out some recipes from it. The ones I have tried out have been heaven to my taste buds. A large part of cooking from scratch is using spices to give meals a certain taste. Once you learn about spices and how to use them in cooking you will be able to experiment and make blends and combinations geared to your taste.

This is a great resource for learning about spices and herbs and flavor combinations. It includes detailed descriptions of herbs, spices and spice blends broken down into those chapters. The descriptions also include types of cuisine and meals the spice or herb works good with and other herbs or spices that complement it. The spices and herbs are in alphabetical order and each description is followed by one or two recipes using the ingredient.

This book appears to be an invaluable resource for any home cook.

This is such an informative book! I really love how each herb and spice is explained and tells where they originate. I love t cook & use spices & herbs daily so this book is very helpful for me. I have learned so much since reading it. I loved the first chapter that tells how to dry and store herbs. I have always preferred fresh herbs but I never knew how to dry or store them & now I do! This book is full of information such as the differences between spices & herbs (like spices tend me more concentrated vs herbs). It also give great tips like how to arrange spices, either alphabetically like most might or by cuisines you would use them in. I liked that is also included how to properly store your herbs & spices and tips on how to grow your own fresh herbs. This book is very simple & easy to understand & has photos of each herb or spice being described. This is a wonderfully written book packed with tons of information tips & tricks. Storing spices and herbs can be a challenge. Spices must stay away from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture. Store spices in a glass container rather than plastic, this keeps the spices fresher. These are some of the best ways to keep your spices and herbs fresh. The rest of the book has wonderful recipes you can make with your spices and herbs, and the dishes look really delicious. I am so overwhelmed with cooking with less sodium and more flavors. I cooked the past two days using some of the spices and what complements what. My husband said that the meals were very good and I give all credit to this book. Not only does it breaks down each spice and how it can be used, it gives you recipes to get the most out of each spice or herb. I even discovered spices I have possibly seen but ignore or looked over in the market. Reading up on the herbs really makes me want to grow a small garden of my own. I loved that the pages were easy to flip through and while at times I am a pointer finger reader, I found that the pages did not smear and no fingerprints were left.
