Looks like negative reviews get voted down here, but I'll risk it. I read Hell Ship and liked it, so tried this one. I found this one just way too far-fetched at so many turns. If you like old spy movies where the villian captures the hero and then invites him to the dinner table to tell him all about his evil plan then you're in for a treat. If you want a story where Navy SEALs actually act like highly trained commandos, instead of constantly stumbling into danger with little more reaction than repeating lame jokes about bars and women (again and again...and again), there's nothing to see here. It's mostly a rehashing of old 1960s James Bond plots, but at one point it makes a left turn into The Mysterious Island or Them for a brief chapter, then returns to the spy plot. It's a short book (200 pages or so) and the ending comes rather suddenly, without all the loose ends wrapped up. I could see this as a $1 ebook, but would feel gypped if I bought the paperback.

Splashdown, a Dane and Bones Origins Story, gives us a peek back in time when Dane and Bones were still Navy Seals. In Splashdown, our two heroes are called on by the government to steal a bomb from the Liberty Bell 7 that lays on the ocean floor. Nothing every seem to be easy with Dane and Bones and their adventure in Splashdown is no different. This is a covert operation but at the scene is.... a news crew filming the raising of the Liberty 7, a treasure hunter who is after treasures of a sunken Spanish ship and ...... drum roll... the Russians who want the bomb for not so nice reason.

Dane and Bones run a muck with the Russians, fight back and escape as this is their story. In typical Dane and Bones fashion there are not only adventures but some good antics by the boys.

The Origins books are fun to read after having read the Dane and Bones series. Love the little insights into their history.

Splashdown by David Wood and Rick Chesler is a Dane and Bones Origins Story that gives us another look at the early adventures that these two Navy SEALs had together. This also helps to give some background into how they learned many of their skills used in marine archaeology after their "retirement" from the Navy. This is a fast paced ride that I couldn't put down and includes a lot of interesting characters and..... creatures. I won't explain much on those since i think they are an awesome part of this story that you will just have to read to find out about.

This is the first Origins Story I have read and it gives just as much excitement as the Dane Maddock Adventure series but with more military background since both Dane and Bones and Navy SEALs. We join Dane and Bones while they are finishing up submersible pilot training in the Pacific and get to see how the two learn to work together and forge their close bond. The training comes in handy and is one reason they are picked for a special assignment to retrieve a Cold War-era nuclear bomb a few hundred miles off the coast of Florida. Excitement and mayhem are running right at the start of this adventure and it doesn't let up. From dealing with a television crew, to underwater submersible fights, to escaping from a crazed Russian submariner, Dane and Bones take us on a non-stop adventure where the fate of Washington D.C. will be decided and they will face off against some pretty deadly creatures you might find hanging out with Godzilla. You'll see. :-)

Splashdown is definitely worth a read and kept me on the edge of my seat the whole way through. I even read it a second time right away and was still captivated by it. I can't wait to go back and read the rest of the Origins Stories. I did receive a complimentary copy of Splashdown in eBook format for the Kindle from David Wood for preview and review. The opinions in this review are mine alone and from my own personal viewpoint.

I've read all of Dane Maddock Adventures and Origins stories, this being the most recent. I love them all, and this one did not disappoint! It's so fast paced. I found myself wanting to skip ahead because I couldn't stand the suspense of what was going to happen next. These books always put me in a good mood because on top of excellent story lines Dane and Bones are so dang funny! My only complaint is that it was over way too soon. As with most of these books, while they are not cliffhangers, you want to instantly go to the next book! Don't worry about having not read previous books. While I think it helps with the history, these are very good stand alone books. And kudo's to Rick on this book also- a very good writing team! So, if you are still reading reviews to figure out if you should buy it- STOP- just do it!

I was fortunate enough to receive an Advanced Reader Copy of Splashdown, and I am so glad that I did! This was my first Origins Story. I will be reading the others as soon as possible. This was a wonderful, action-packed adventure. It is really cool seeing how Dane and Bones are learning to work together, and you get to see the start of their wonderful friendship. I am downloading the other Origins Stories right now. I hope there are many, many more Dane and Bones adventures in the future. Thank you David Wood for writing such wonderful adventure stories. These are great for adults or teens. If you have a teen that's not crazy about reading, then give him or her this book. It's an easy, quick read, with a lot of action and some really good history packed in!

Not my favorite of the David Wood books. Reading them out of order makes it apparent to me that these books get better as they go along. In this book specifically, I would have thought that Dane and Bones would have been more knowledgeable about the history of the 1960's.

A good read, whether this is your first experience with these characters, or you've read everything else already. An interesting premise that could have been expounded upon with another 300 pages. My only issue is that the end came too quickly...
David Wood brings fresh air and entertainment with every new turn of the page. Looking forward to what comes next.....

These little early history stories when Dane & Bones are still in the Navy are fine to read. They're good fillers while waiting for the next full book to come out. I don't really care about their early days, but so far the stories have been entertaining.

I really enjoy this duo, and the origins stories are just fun. We see more about how they came to work together and this one really dives into their crazy world. Once again I can highly recommend this book and this series for that matter ... Read it and love it!!

This was my first introduction to Dane and Bones, and one that I enjoyed. I will most certainly be buying and reading as many Dane and Bones books as I can get my hands on.
It was a short, fast paced action adventure with an interesting story and cool characters.
I would recommend this book in the future.

always love a good dane and bones story. would have enjoyed a longer one though. i read the whole book in one day. the ORIGINS stories all seem to be shorter than the originls but have the advantage of being more frequent.

Usually enjoy the Dane and Bones books immensely. This one started well, with an interesting plot, but somehow the ending seemed rushed and a little too contrived to be anything close to believable. Still, I'm looking forward to the next one with the hope it will be more on par with the other books and novelettes of the series.
